Actually, a .45 has slower slugs than a 9mm…the risk of the slug traveling further than the intended target is greater with the 9mm.

Best home protection is a 12ga pump shotgun (shortest legal barrel length) with 00 buck, loaded, with the chamber open. In the dark, a shotgun is more likely to hit the target. 00 buck is .32 cal and a round of 12 ga 00 buck has about 9 shot. Better than pulling the trigger of a handgun multiple times.

Why leave the chamber open? Two reasons: first is safety as you know for sure a round isn’t chambered when the chamber is open; second, there is no need to give an intruder a verbal warning…the sound of a shotgun chambering a round is warning enough. All you need to do is slide the gun shut and you’re ready. Everybody knows what can happen next once you’ve heard that sound.
