You can’t make this stuff up

Rich Bond, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, discussing Condoleezza Rice’s upcoming testimony before the 9/11 Commission in an article in today’s Newsday:

“The woman oozes expertise and sincerity,” said former Republican National chairman Rich Bond. “I’m glad the White House came around to allow her to say publicly what she’s already told the commission privately. The old adage is, ‘Get it out, get it out, get it out.’ If the Democrats want to slap around an African American woman, let them try.”

And, on recent polls showing that Bush’s approval ratings on handling terrorism have slipped and that more people now doubt what the administration is saying about its responses to pre-9/11 terrorist threats:

Bond attributes these polls to a number of factors, including Clarke’s charges and the continuing violence in Iraq. He expects Rice’s testimony to begin the process of reversing the trend, and the overall reality of Bush’s record to complete it.

“I think Condi Rice on her worst day is worth ten of Richard Clarke on his best day,” Bond said. “The imagery of George Bush standing on the rubble of 9/11 overrides anything Clarke can say.”

Simply incredible.

Wow. Not even pretending to conceal the contempt here, are we? I mean, at least he could put in some throw-away line about how the people will ultimately realize that the Administration wasn’t lying or something. Charming.

Well, stuff-another-sock-in-a-flight-suit, why bother with actual governing when you can be president with TV commercials and other media management.

See? Bush standing over the rubble from a terrorist attack proves the administration took terrorism seriously!

How to make chicken salad out of chickenshit: Paraphrasing one Rethug spokesbot on Sunday blab, Who better to make the President’s case for the 9-11 commission than Condi Rice, a savvy well-spoken represantative blah blah blah … it’s genius to have her out there. (Er, the WH was essentially SHAMED into letting take the oath, but never mind.)

But that “well-spoken” compliment the wingnuts like to use when validating Colin Powell or other black Rethugs makes up one of Chris Rock’s best rants. WHAT THE HELL DID YOU *THINK* S/HE WOULD SOUND LIKE?

They’re expecting something like that recent Dave Chappelle sketch on “When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong”, where he goes all “ghetto” on the rest of the corporate boardmembers.

I agree with peanut’s comment in re chris rock. But I’d like to point out that the phrase “she just oozes sincerity” and etc… is particularly repulsive, makes her sound like some kind of toxin exuding toad and, of course, reminds us that they don’t have any actual, you know, “facts” to talk about and are having to rely entirely on imagery and personality to make their points. Alas for them, their own followers are so much more racist than the left could ever imagine that I don’t think condi will do them much good, no matter how “well spoken” she is.

Lost Weekend + Daylight Savings = Discombobulation

(1) Don’t listen to him, Lorenzo, we’re still copacetic as far as I’m concerned. I think our relationship can withstand a little good-natured ribbing. (2) As my old friend Walker would say, “prepare for amazingness.” (3) Thanks for the valuable…

Those wacky Republicans

Sadly, No! alerts us to an article on Condi Rice in today’s Newsday with the following remarkable quote: “The woman oozes expertise and sincerity,” said…

“If the Democrats want to slap around an African American woman, let them try.”

For sheer cynicism, only arch segregationist Strom Thurmond and his black mistress and children can beat this Bond yo-yo!

“The imagery of George Bush standing on the rubble of 9/11 overrides anything Clarke can say.”

Is that why Bush only makes rubble everywhere? I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:

9/11 IS ONLY THE GREATEST OF GEORGE BUSH’S MANY, MANY FAILURES. THEY SHOULD HAVE LEFT HIM STANDING ON THAT RUBBLE AS A MEMORIAL, HANGING HIS HEAD IN THE SHAME HE IS SO INCAPABLE OF FEELING.

Here’s what Frum the puppet said about Clarke Vs. Rice on CNNs’ Reliable Sources today:

FRUM: I think if you regard this as an all-out assault, I mean, you should see — this is a very gentle White House…

KURTZ: Gentle?

FRUM: Gentle.

KURTZ: This is unbelievable! Hour after hour, Scott McClellan was out there, Vice President Cheney, Condi Rice, Dan Bartlett.

FRUM: It was prolonged but it was not intense. There were a lot of things that they could have said that they did not say. KURTZ: What are you suggesting by that?

FRUM: I’m not going to say. But you can imagine.

David(I’m still a shill for Bush) Frum just jumped the shark here, folks.

Here’s what a sensible journalist said a couple of minutes later:

KURTZ: What do you know of Richard — David Frum’s description of the White House counter attack here — 24-seven on about 172 TV shows — as gentle?

MILBANK: I can’t say it seems gentle, but I — we have heard the whisperings of other things that could have been said. Indeed, some conservative commentators were saying, maybe she has a — he has a problem with a black woman in a position of power.

So you can see sort of that kind of innuendo coming out.

I think the White House made a mistake here, because their policy had been, we don’t do book reviews. You know, Paul O’Neill comes out. David Frum comes out, admittedly not with a Richard Clarke kind of an attack. And they just try to say, OK, well, you know, laugh it off.

Frum made his side look stupid, which admittedly, isn’t hard to do these days.

You know Richard Clarke has a wierd personal life, so there.

I just love how all the Republicans gloat about what a “strong leader” Bush was after 9/11. Evidently not having a nervous breakdown and cowering under your desk in the fetal position qualifies as strong leadership these days.

[Bond] expects Rice’s testimony to begin the process of reversing the trend…

If her television appearances of the past coupla weeks are any guide, I’d consider that to be highly unlikely.

And I have two words for anyone who could watch Condi tell “60 Minutes” how much she would rilly, rilly, rilly like to testify before the 9/11 commission and then conclude that she “oozes sincerity:”

Hey, Rube!

Miss Authoritiva

I would really like to explain my full-tilt reaction to the line about slapping around an African-American woman, but to quote Frum: “I’m not going to say. But you can imagine.”

Open advice to Republican functionaries: When you’re going to play the race card, the standard protocol does not involve announcing, “Okay everybody, we’re going to play the race card now.” And when you’re going to play the 9-11 card, don’t boast, “This rubble is OURS!”

Well…at least this guy admits that Bush’s numbers are down. A guest commentary in the SF Chronicle simply stated that Bush’s approval ratings (in the wake of Clark/Rice, etc.) were “soaring” without quoting any numbers.

Man–if they look at the polls I’ve seen and can call that “soaring,” it might be easier to beat them than I once thought.

“If the Democrats want to slap around an African American woman, let them try.”

I find it interesting that a party that does so much to fight Affirmative Action is shameless in playing the race card when all else fails.

was there ever a more apt name for a republican than “rich bond?”

I don’t think that is sincerity that’s she’s oozing. Check her feet and legs for a slime trail
