I came across an interview with Hagee in a magazine for Jews in America, I forget the name, started with an M, while visiting family friends this weekend.
Portrayed him as a great friend of Israel and a well-reasoned compassionate man of the cloth who’s concerned with making up for the misdeeds of Christianity towards Jews. I know that’s complete and utter bullshit, but that’s how he was presented. The only hint of crazy was him calling himself a Zionist, and, unfortunately, in the context that was supposed to be a good thing.
I really wonder when the last time Holy Joe had contact with reality was. He strikes me as just as much of a bubble boy as Bush, only Joe’s bubble is kosher.
(Which does, I’ll admit, mean it probably tastes better.)

Lieberman launched into a spirited defense of the televangelist, describing him as someone who “represents a lot of people in this country, particularly Christians who care about the state of Israel.”

I don’t know that Joe is self loathing, per se, I think it’s more the case that he’s completely off his nut. Something seems to have happened to him after 2000 that sent him on a dark journey from “moderate/centrist/hawkish Democrat” to “Zell Miller’s more urbane cousin”.

Seriously, what problem is there with a Jew speaking at a Hagee event. Hagee has such a balanced view of Judaism, I mean how insightful is this:

Is Lieberman still calling himself an independent or has he joined the Republican Party he loves?

It was Herzl who first observed that the Antisemites are Zionism’s natural allies. Obviously, Lieberman (and Hagee’s other Jewish Zionist friends) know as well as anybody that there won’t be any rapture – so from their point of view it’s all good. The hell part will never happen anyway…

In fact, it would be “good” even if Hagee and Cie. stirred up open Antisemitism in the US, as that might get more American Jews to move to Israel – right now it is kind of hard to defend the notion that Israel is safer for Jews than the US.

jstreet is a new, liberal Jewish political organization. As an Obama supporter (jstreet has not endorsed), I think they are right on what they write about Israel. Today, however, they are pushing a petition to ask Lieberman to withdraw from attending the Hagee event. Here is my response to jstreet:

Joe Lieberman is a lost soul. I see no reason to ask him to renounce Hagee as he, Lieberman, is in the process of destroying himself. The voters of Connecticut made a bad mistake two years ago. They won’t do it again in four years.

As a Jewish American, I was initially proud when Gore chose Lieberman as his running mate. The more I heard from Lieberman during the 2000 campaign, the more I regretted his being on the ticket with Gore. His buddying up to Bush and McCain over the Iraqi war, I thought, was the last straw. Now he wants to affect what is seen on You Tube violating the First Amendment (and he does have First Amendment rights to support Hagee), and finally this stuff with Hagee. I just can’t wait until the Democrats take real control of the Senate this fall so they can say bye-bye to Lieberman.

It’s the triumph of the Mafia model for loyalty. How do you build a political machine? People are normally very unreliable, they don’t do what you tell them and if the going gets tough they rat you out. Sending your heavy over with a baseball bat to talk sense doesn’t work well in the long run. So how to build an organization that can weather sustained attacks?

I mean, wouldn’t it be nice to have someone who will do whatever you tell him to do and would never in a million years betray the organization? For this you need two things. You need someone with a really illegal kink though murder works too. A pedophile would be ideal but use your imagination. There are plenty of other paraphilias to work with. Lieberman isn’t a “self-loathing Jew,” he sees an opportunity and takes it. When it comes to Hagee and his ilk, Lieberman and the rest of the pro-Israel Jewish community are laughing all the way to the bank.

Hagee and the American fundamentalist community believes that Israel needs to be kept alive and kicking at all costs so that the Apocalypse can happen. For Israel, this means an unconditional and virtually unlimited source of support in the most powerful country in the world; and all they have to do for the fundies in exchange is sit around, keep on living and wait patiently for an event that they know is never going to happen.

It’s a great deal. I’m no fan of Israel (or Lieberman), but even I have to laugh at how easily they lead the Christian Right around by the nose.
