Who Will Comfort K-Lo?

CNN is calling Iowa for Obama and for Huckabee.

I predict much wailing and gnashing of teeth and sobbing into cartons of Chubby Hubby while gazing longingly at the Tiger Beat pull-out poster of Fred Thomspon at chez Lopez tonight.

Anyone else watching the Iowa results come in?

Update: If this doesn’t surface in the media at some point in the campaign, I will be sorely disappointed:

Seb adds: Apparently the Huckabee campaign also contributed to the International Herald Tribune (though they’ve fixed the online version):

I’m just prayin Edwards will keep his slim lead over Hillary.
And that Newt interprets this as a reason for him to enter the race.
Then it’s a good day.

Not so much, though I’m pulling for Edwards.

The corporate media has tried so hard to bury him, you have to know he is the guy they fear most.

Sadly, yes…I’m here at my office, slaving away for Da Man and listening to the caucus coverage on NPR.

Don’t cry for me, Iowa.

That banging sound you hear is poor old Hugh banging his stupid head off the desk as he tries to spin this one. ha ha ha ha ha

CNN’s exit poll numbers give Obama the 17-44 age group, Edwards 45-64, and Clinton the 65+ Geritol group.

“Huckabee’s victory can be attributed to his overwhelming support among evangelical voters and women, according to CNN analysis of entrance polls.”

Okay, I’m with Coulter, women should never have been allowed to vote.

Huckabee’s vicktrey means more fun reading Fred Hiatt’s rethuglican crew tomorrow.

Whine like you mean it, beaches!

I just watched footage of the prayer circles at the Huckabee headquarters today. How great it would be to put the spectacle that is christian fundamentalism under the world spotlight of the general presidential campaign. Frankenstein is loose, which is exactly what the Republicans who borg’ed them deserve.

And two whoo-hoo’s for the Obama win. I really don’t want to have to vote for the carpetbagger.

Now the fun begins, watching the Corporatists trying to keep Huck out of the White House. When they succeed at keeping it out, the wrath of the batshit-crazies Evangelicals will be a wonder to behold.

I too am crazy Hillary is in third. Take that, MSM!

Never worry about KLo. Mr. Hot Water Bottle and one of her stuffed animals always come through.

choo-choo-ka-choo, clinton just dropped to 29% — which is a much nicer third place finish than 30-30. Come on, just hold up for the last four percents reporting!

Thompson? Fred Thompson?

Sir! Sir! Lopez flicks her bean for one man and one man only: the magnificent Mormon Mitt Romney–who is at this point ten percentage points behind the preposterous Mike Huckabee.

And the Clinton woman is in third. Delightful! I expect that her head is spinning around like Linda Blair’s.

Where are the rest of you folks at with McCain? He’s long since lost his mind, but he still scares me less than the rest of their goobers. I don’t know whether to pull for Awshucksabee and the subsequent trouncing of evangelical politics, or for McCain just in case the Dems lose. Again.

Mike Huckabee just said something about needing to “love those who are behind us.”

Standing right behind him? Chuck Norris.

I’d just like to take this opportunity to say…

Iowans RAWK!!!!1111!

Love those who are behind us? Is he getting a reach around?

Bariatrics for McCain!

I was TPU’d, but I was wondering if Edwards will appear in the MSM or if the media will still blithely continue the “Obama vs Clinton” narrative even though Edwards has very clearly stepped between the two interracial lovers.

The white man in the race is the most progressive. It’s eerie.

I’m sooo glad that the Caucus is finally over. I was at home with pneumonia today and my phone was ringing constantly with out-of-state numbers. The one call I answered was a woman from the Edwards campaign. I told her I would stand for Edwards if it didn’t involve going out into the Iowa winter when I already was sick. She begged me to go anyway.

I didn’t go, of course. I turned the phone ringer off and slept most of the day.

Thing is, we don’t know how all this will work in the compressed primary schedule. We DO know we’ll have a nominee in the next four weeks.

And then, they have to survive, not fuck up and not have anything real bad come out over the seven months til the conventions.

This is a very weird year, and lots of this shit could be meaningless by june first.

But all that said, go JE!!

mikey

In both parties, the main establishment candidates got slapped. A good start to the election cycle.

Edwards’ showing is mighty nice.

Snorghagen: Obama’s Pepsi to Clinton’s Coke. They’re pretty much both establishment candidates.

Sorry, I can’t trust a guy who counts Lieberman as one of his dear and close mentors. It makes me want to chunder.

Iowa is my new favorite state.

Redstate is a blast tonight. Heads are ‘splodin.

//
Yeah, I really don’t understand who gave the evangelicals the right to first refusal.

Maybe some of us should start threatening to withhold votes instead of being bullied around by holier than thou Christians.
//

The wheel turns, does it not, Molari??

Blech. NPR is interviewing Rich Lowry, who is having no choice but to fall back on McCain.

Hurl.

We’re having quite the pro-Edwards party in the comments thread over at my place. With a big fat link for the lovely Jillian for flavor.

Obama’s sounding impressive in his speech. I’m still Edwards’ girl, though.

Let’s see how Hillary plays this.

Rich “We’re Winning!” Lowry?

Hah!

I hope someone reminds him that he’s a chickenhawk twerp living on wingnut welfare.

When he’s on his game, ain’t nobody in the current race who comes anywhere close to speechifying like Barack Obama.

Maybe some of us should start threatening to withhold votes instead of being bullied around by holier than thou Christians.

OK, I’m battling one mean motherfucker of a virus but this makes my damn week.

Inkadu wrote:

Yes, they are. But I said main establishment candidate. Hilary is the one they seemed to have assumed would walk away with it, and it’s a pleasure to see them so wrong. But I share your lack of enthusiasm for Obama.

Congradulations to Mike Huckabee for winning the Iowa caucas he will make an Excellent President!

To see a tongue-in-cheek review of the Iowa primary in pictures…link here:

http://www.thoughttheater.com

BB missed the memo, apparently. Huckabee is supposed to be a big ole scarey RINO.

So how does the liberal employer of Bill Kristol, the NYTimes, see the caucus results? Shape of coverage to come:

The result also left uncertain the prospects for John Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, who had staked his second bid for the White House on winning this state.

So JE comes out ahead of the media annointed “front runner” and this leaves his prospects “uncertain”. The rest of the article goes on with the Scary Vagina/Bride of Clenis vs. Inspirational Young Black Man story line the press settled on months ago:

For Democrats, the contest had historic overtones: a battle between a first-term senator, Mr. Obama, trying to become the nation’s first black president, and a former first lady, Mrs. Clinton, seeking to become the first woman to occupy the Oval Office…

…The inducements included free rides to caucus sites, baby-sitting and food. In a development that both Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton had hoped for, the day was snow-free and the single-digit temperatures of earlier in the week were gone. The theory was that supporters of Mr. Edwards were experienced caucusgoers who were used to dealing with bad weather. Mr. Obama had sought to expand the universe of caucusgoers by appealing to young voters, while Mrs. Clinton was looking for first-time caucusgoers among younger women and women over 65.

Oh, really, NYT? If the fear of bad weather wasn’t realized, what light does it shed on the outcome, particularly the loss by your annointed front-runner? I can’t hear you, NYT. Why was this theory worth rehashing again?

See Dean, Howard, 2004 for how the press narrative of Edwards will roll out from here.

I was worried until this evening that Jesus would fail to anoint Governor Huckabee, since He only began manifesting His support for him over the last month or so, but finally He pulled through in a final caucus performance which was quite strong.

I’m Mike Huckabee, and I’ll pardon any billy bob that Bill Clinton put in jail.

I can’t wait to see Robert Novak, Dave “teh Dean” Broder, Blood and Guts Krauthammer, and the rest of Freddy (I”m not real smart!) Hiatt’s crew digest Huckabee’s victory.

So there’s that.

And K-Lo will have to be comforted by Putin-on-the-Ritz.

Jennifer — If Edwards ran first place by 10 points, the headline story would be, “Obama and Hillary battle for second place. Winner uncertain.” It’s pathetic. I want to kick all of these reporters in the shins and write journalism schools with, “You need a degree to do this crap? o rly?”

Snorghagen – Yeah. I know.

T-Rex – Hugs! Don’t have time to visit tonight.

Fred Thompson still has a chance to win the South Carolina primary next month, my prediction is that he will and with the help of Grass-roots Conservatives such as myself he will win the Republican nomination.

As TPM pointed out, nearly twice as many Democrates caucused as Republicans, even though both parties have about the same number of registered voters in Iowa. I think I detect a certain lack of enthusiasm out there in wingnutistan.

Democrates?

Fred Thompson still has a chance to win the South Carolina primary next month, my prediction is that he will and with the help of Grass-roots Conservatives such as myself he will win the Republican nomination.

That must be some tasty, tasty crack you’re smoking.

Thompson could hardly afford TV time in the 48 hours leading up to the Iowa primary.

He’ll win Tennessee by like 40 points and then will have to drop out on Feb. 6. Broke.

My prediction is that Fred Thompson being a Conservative Southerner will win the Republican primaries in most if not all the Southern States. He’s polling very well in my home state of Texas thats for damn sure.

Fred Thompson still has a chance to win the South Carolina primary next month, my prediction is that he will and with the help of Grass-roots Conservatives such as myself he will win the Republican nomination.

Go, Mr. 14%!!!!!!!

I agree w/ Andy Axel. Fred Thompson is toast. To the extent this means anything, it’s good for McCain.

Meanwhile, one listened–in vain!–for NPR, who had Rich Lowry on, to note that he’d written the “Huckicide” column in the Nat. Review, and that asking him what Huck’s victory meant was…incomplete without that acknowledgment.

Dint happen.

I’m still giggling over tough-guy Rudy only being able to scare up a micro-wimpy 4%.

Hi, this is Louisiana Governor Booby Jindal, congratulating Mike Huckabee on showing the Republican party what playing with fire feels like.

Hey, it worked for me in Louisiana! Maybe I’ll be the next crazy southern fundamentalist elected President!

Obama would beat Grandpa Fred senseless. I’d love to see it but I’ll probably have to settle for Obama thrashing McCain.

He’s polling very well in my home state of Texas thats for damn sure.

Sadly, No

Thursday, 13 December 2007
Huckabee 29% (16%)
Giuliani 16% (23%)
Thompson 14% (16%)
Romney 14% (12%)
McCain 7% (9%)
Paul 6% (5%)
Tancredo 3% (3%)
Hunter 2% (3%)
Keyes 0% (1%)
Undecided 9% (11%)

So, it is possible for the USA to make it’s third Presidential mistake in 3 years.

If Obama and Huckabee do somehow win the nominations, I give up.

The ‘uncertain prospects’ line was from notorious media whore Adam Nagourney. He specializes in that sort of crap.

Heh, listening to the talking heads on tv, they have no idea what to make of the caucus results. They keep trying to spin the same tired old narratives that they wrote months ago, but they’ve never sounded more hollow. Their body language is all jittery and they’re blinking a lot… a sign they may know that they’re lying.

I’m stoked for New Hampshire.

If Obama and Huckabee do somehow win the nominations, I give up.

Sad innit? Even sadder that everyone here is all, “Edwards is so fine, I’d drop to my knees and suck his succulent penis because, well, because the MSM doesn’t like him and he’s the closest we got to Al Gore.” Fucking sad.

Ain’t none of these president wannabee douchbags qualified to solve the serious problems we got a-commin’. Not Huckabee/McCain, not Clinton/Richardson not Obama/Osama.
Its fun watching them parade in their spiffy haircuts and their self-righteous anger, but, we’re doomed.

Our only hope is Bloomberg.

Didn’t you hear , Huckabee is the liberal candidate? & as you well know , A.C.’s almost always right. That’s how the spin will probably go . The Huckster drew a lot of RINOs , or even a bunch of librul-pinko moles that registered as Republicans . The real Republicans are for Romney or Giuliani .” Just wait “. In the next breath they’ll denounce the MSM for being dismissive of Huckabee because he’s religious. (Of course it’s the Fox faction that’s doing the most to discredit him, so they can get their favorite(s) right wingnut-in-chief elected .)Won’t mention that part .

Good to see Hillary,Rudy & Romney get knocked down

That said, the whole thing is insane .

“As of 2006, Iowa has an estimated population of 2,982,085 ”
That’s <1 freakin’ % of the population , and not even a typical 1% at that .
Biden & Dodd quit already.

Rudy’s a maniac, but probably sensible in not taking it too seriously

On to New Hampshire!

Wait, wait, our only hope is Il Mini-Duce? We’re fucked?

So, it is possible for the USA to make it’s third Presidential mistake in 8 years.

Really. Only eight years? Do you have a compelling reason to dislike Obama that wouldn’t apply equally well to Bill Clinton?

I can’t stand him and his kinder-gentler-DLC bullshit myself, but Obama is still probably better than anyone this country’s elected president since LBJ.

Our only hope is Bloomberg.

Hey, look, The Health Care Industry is posting on Sadly, No!

Please, stop with the ‘i know what im talking about references’ ‘LBJ for the USA!’
The reference you want is Jimmy Carter. And you possibly saw how that turned out?

“As of 2005, New Hampshire has an estimated population of 1,309,940,”

so < 1/2 %

Iowa + NH = ~1.3% of total pop . ( I know, I know . That’s the way it is .Still don’t have to like it.)

You liberals smell like feces.

Is that the logic, facts, and reasoned debate you were touting so highly the other day?

Thank you for proving my point.

So you really an Edwards fan, Mikey? You think that guy is gonna solve the problems, he’s gonna stand up to the agricultural lobby and the warproffiteer lobby?
You think he’s gonna sort the coming depression?
Or are you just enthralled by his sweet Jimmy Carteresque face and populist rhetoric?
Not that there’s anything wrong with that, folks on the other side are doing the same, voting them up some Huckabee.

Dang people, what the fuck are you chattering about? Don’t you know that there’s an emergency crisis with police responding at Britney Spears’ home?

Huckabee will have the most delegates, that’s for sure, however will it be enough to clinch? What if the others gang against him?
Huck will clean up the Bible belt…
Gulianni may still get a bunch of big ticket winner-takes-all states, such as NY, CA, IL, perhaps FL…
McCain may catch on fire among sensible republicans who: 1. value integrity and 2. realize that McCain would be most electable in the general beacuse of his “centrist” appeal. He did very well in New England in 2000, plus if he gets Fred Thompson’s delegates, that’s TN for sure plus some Bible belt leftovers…
Romney is toast, but he will carry UT, perhaps michigan ( his father legacy) and MA (home state), ID (big mormon state). plus some delgates from IA, NH and other peanuts
So if McCain (which includes Fred Thomp.), Guliani and Romney pool delegates behind the front-runner among them, Huck may lose the nomination… It would be interesting story to watch…

For all you non Canadians out there, that was a classic clip from Rick Mercer’s “Talking to Americans”. He’s our version of Jon Stewart.

GO GO EDWARDS!!

And what’s with the bad vibes in this thread? You can’t be angry when Giuliani’s trailing RAWN PRAWN in the polls lol.

Romney is toast, but he will carry UT, perhaps michigan ( his father legacy) and MA (home state), ID (big mormon state). plus some delgates from IA, NH and other peanuts…

Thank you, Krassen, I needed the long healing belly laugh. Romney couldn’t carry Massachusetts if he was running against the corpse of Saddam Hussein. Willard took the governor’s office here in the Commonwealth on a fluke — his Democratic opponent was effectively kneecapped by her own inexperience & the unwillingness of the Masshole Old Boys’ Club to get past their terror of girl cooties. By the middle of his one term, Mitt had trashed any goodwill he might have earned even from the swamp yankees at the western end of the state, who got tired of losing their latest batch of undocumented peons every time Willard decided to flip-flop between Anti-Immigrant Mitt and Big Business Mitt. As for taking Michigan, when Mitt first announced his gubernatorial ambitions, my father-in-law (who once voted for George) made a whole bunch of not-very-funny jokes about “brainwashing” and the supposed sophistication of the East Coast. And if he lasts long enough to campaign in Utah, his Repub opponents will not fail to remind the natives that Mitt shook off the dust of the Beehive State because, as I’m sure someone has ready for YouTube, “Nobody wins the Presidency campaigning as the former governor of Utah.” If he stays on stage long enough, he’ll take Idaho on the White Power vote, plus some random Amway delegates and any votes Blackwater (Eric Prince) can steal from the overseas ballots.

Romney’s natural voting base is himself, his Five Sons(tm), and his personal millions — and as as they balance another line on their weak resumes against the burn rate of their inheritance, even the Five Brothers(tm) are losing steam. He’s one of those people who, the more time you spend with him, the less you like him. My bet is that, unless he does very well in New Hampshire — where they hate Rich Fvcks from Massachusetts almost as much as they hate spending money — Romney gets a visit from the RNC well in advance of the Super Tuesday primaries. The Permanent Republican Party shows up with a lead pipe in one hand and a promise of 2012 support in the other, and if Romney doesn’t want serious hurt done to the back of his perfectly coiffed head, he decides to graciously offer his support, such as it is, to John “Always A Team Player, Now It’s His Turn” McCain.

It’s already clear that the Permanent Republican Party regards Huckabee (the Arkansas Elmer Gantry) with the same degree of enthusiasm as a cat regards a warm sudsy bubble bath with extra lye. Since Jeri Thompson can only flog Fred into semi-action for a limited time, and Rudy has more toxins oozing out of the woodwork than a shotgun shack in New Orleans, McCain gets the tinfoil crown in Minneapolis…

And then proceeds, I hope, to get beaten by an Edwards/Clinton or an Obama/Anybody-Not-Lieberman ticket like he was back in the Hanoi Hilton. But there’s all kinds of Interesting Times to be lived through before we have to start worrying about that can of worms.

To paraphrase Edna St. Vincent Millay –

“Her crackpipe burns at both ends, it will not last the night, But oh my foes and ah my friends, I thought you said she’s tight?”

Dude,

I was quoted at Stormfront.org.

See?

They used large sections of an article I wrote for an educational Web site. The article was about American Indians and slavery. (Second post on the thread.)

I can barely hold back my revulsion, but I must admit: In a strange way, this is TEH AWESOME.

I believe I will respond to them, but not now. I should sleep on it, and try to write something a little more constructive than “listen here, you racist looneys.”

I posted without reading what else was on this thread, and I started to scroll through, and there is waaay too much tedious asshattery from a Japanese movie monster called Yonna.

Why didn’t somebody warn me? I could have had my stupid-repellent ready.

Jillian, I tried to tell you this on the down low, but as the “boys” haven’t seen fit to add you to the drop down menu in the contact zone, I must do this publicly. The “at” before “chez Lopez” is redundant, chez meaning “to or at the home or place of business of.”

I admit that I don’t know much Mass politics, however, I was very surprised at your take… According to Mitt he has driven that state to a permanent Nirvana, where it rains nectar in the summer and ambrosia in the winter and the health care for everyone comes with complimentary swedish massage… And since the media caught up on his all other BS (being a hunter, being a MLK homey, etc.) I wonder why they won’t harp on his Mass. record…
As for the others, I strongly disagree on Utah, he’ll carry it even if he withdraws… a cult is a cult is a cult is a cult, period.
As for the others they do look iffy. For NH he needs a miracle, for some reason these folks have something for McCain.
… I am surprised how nobody takes Guliani seriously anymore. His strategy is working to perfection, he said he was skipping IA and NH and he did.
As for Huck, the GOP are scared of him, but I think at some point he would give the wink signal that he is not so much above being bought. I expect eventually there will be some kind of “understanding”… Huck may look like a clown, but he is infinitely more controlable than McCain. He just hasn’t named his price yet…

I posted without reading what else was on this thread, and I started to scroll through, and there is waaay too much tedious asshattery from a Japanese movie monster called Yonna.

Please stop with the trolling. If you don’t have anything thoughtful to say about how strangely wonderful it is to have a genuine evangelic xstian finally kicking some Iowa ass or how terribly special it is to have 3 utterly useless democrats virtually tied for first place in Iowa, or even- who the fuck cares about Iowa? then please don’t wast our time with adhominem attacks on other posters. Thanks.

I would be very, very happy to look forward to Barack Obama wiping the national map clean with the saddened limp figure of Gomer Huckabee and the Last Dying Day of the Reagan Coalition.

God knows that map does need a good cleaning after 30 years of Reagan and Reagan Zombie (Bush Jr) filth.

Oh, dear. Yet more tedious asshattery from the Japanese movie monster.

I said there had already been waaay too much of that. Please learn to pay attention and work on your reading comprehension. Start with getting a better definition of “trolling.” You’re really not understanding it very well at all. We may have to hold you back a grade.

And since the media caught up on his all other BS (being a hunter, being a MLK homey, etc.) I wonder why they won’t harp on his Mass. record…

In order to find out Willard’s record among us Massholes, the media would have to come to Massachusetts, and they’re very nervous about that. I think some of them are afraid of catching Teh Ghey, and the rest are afraid of catching Teh Smart, either of which conditions would make them unemployable in Media-World. Also, the New Hampsterites tell them Boston drivers are more dangerous than your average jihadi, which is probably true, because jihadi don’t have access to late-model SUVs.

And, Hoosier X, much as I love you, you gotta remember — if you feed the trolls, you’ll never get them out from under the porch.

The writers over at Digby chastise those of us who seek a Huckabee downfall, since even his presence indicates the danger of the Talibangelicals and may inspire them to dizzying heights of aiming to destroy our Earthly Republic once again.

But I think there might be a good thing to actually have this fight against the pseudo-Christian nutballs (who pray in public as the Pharisees do) and actually, soundly, openly, overwhelmingly defeat them.

Beat them. Beat them sorry. Have the rest of the non-redneck, non-Southern (and I write from Georgia) parts of the country say ha ha ha ha you bunch of Gomer-tards, YOU LOSE!!!!

I want a 50 state Democratic victory, but it’d be okay for Gomer Huck to carry the typical backwaters of white supremacy, like Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, maybe even Louisiana since they washed away their black folk.

nanee nannee i made you respond and you made me respond we are all wonderful trolls now and don’t we feel special about ourselves?
Bloomberg/McCain 2008!

Here’s the deal about Huckabee as far as I’m concerned: if he gets the nomination, I don’t see any earthly reason why he couldn’t win the presidency, batshit crazy as he may be.

But this next election, to my thinking, is a big national referendum on which way we, as a people, want this country to go. There’s a segment of snake-handling, speaking-in-tongues religious nutjobs who want desperately to haul this country back into the fourteenth century, and they are accompanied by a larger number of evil, cynical people who disagree with these religious sentiments, but have been happy to manipulate those who hold these sentiments into voting for candidates that pay lip service to the religious agenda. Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority was and is the iconic representation of the batshit religious segment of the population, and William Kristol, to my mind, is the iconic example of the evil, cynical bastards who manipulate the religious idiots into voting for a hegemonic agenda with a religious veneer.

If we can’t break the stranglehold this unholy alliance has held over American politics for almost forty years now, and if we can’t break it in this election cycle, then my personal opinion is that this country is completely and totally fucked and played out. This is a Hail Mary election cycle for me – if we lose to the religious nutjobs again, it’s not a matter of “when will America collapse”, but “how long do we have”.

So, in a certain way, I’d just as soon the Republican candidate be Huckabee. Not because I think he’s unelectable, but just because I think as a nation we need to see the lunatic contigent he represents get soundly defeated on a national scale. I worry for my future if we can’t do that – and for the future of anyone under sixty in this country.

Perhaps I’m naive, but Huckabee winning Iowa doesn’t make me feel good. He may not be as bad as Giuliani or Romney, but he’s still pretty bad. And I am not as convinced as everyone else seems to be that he cannot win. I think the theocratic impulse is quite live in our republic right now, and while it is true that if the majority of the US public viewed fundamentalist Christians closely, they would find the spectacle strange at best, I am not sure that the majoirty of US public cares enough to really view potential candidates closely.

I am not at all convinced that Huckabee’s win is really a ‘lose’ for the Republicans.

Interesting, Jillian.

I’m not convinced it’s a ‘lose’ for Republicans, either, atheist.

But if we can’t stop these fuckers from turning America into a backwater snakehandling Christian theocracy now, we’ll never stop them. We might as well throw down against it now as any other time. If we lose….I’d just as soon not think about it.

I’m not convinced that Huckabee can’t win. He could. We are THAT stupid. (Hello? Swift Boat?)

And I’d much rather live under a McCain than a Huckabee.

But fortunately my comments and our comments are just that, talk, not magical fairy dust which will affect the primary race for Republicans — they do not listen to us.

So, OK, we know Huckabee might get the nomination. If he does, I know that I’ll fight him tooth and nail. At this point, anything past that is just a theory, as far as I am concerned. I know what to do.

Huckabee might get it. But from this point on, every GOP dirty trick and Republican-funded media whore is going to be aimed squarely at the Huckster’s conical skull.

And Bloomberg? Bloomberg?! Has anyone ever seen Bloomberg and Vlad Putin in the same room at the same time? Just sayin…

Those who say Huck can’t win the nomination are making the mistake of thinking that this is another business-as-usual primary for the GOP. It isn’t. Their party is in total disarray. The Reagan-forged greed-and-bigotry coalition is finally starting to bust at its seams. The “establishment” ain’t what it used to be, as evidenced by the fact that all of the candidates they’ve flirted with (Rudy, Mitt, Thompson) have fallen headlong into the gutter.

I would relish a Huck run in the general for the reasons Jillian states, but also because I think he’d be incredibly easy to beat and would swing lots of current purple states into the Dem column, which would likely stick beyond 2008 as the GOP continues to die.

Yonna, this may seem obvious, but if you want to avoid ad hominem attacks, you might want to try not acting like such an utter douchebag.

“it’s not a matter of ‘when will America collapse’, but ‘how long do we have’.”

we already are collapsing and we’ve got 30-40 years.

But if we can’t stop these fuckers from turning America into a backwater snakehandling Christian theocracy now, we’ll never stop them. We might as well throw down against it now as any other time.

QFT.

Additionally, it’s interesting that Huckabee’s likely slate of primary wins indicates a serious fracture in the Atwater/Rove-administered coalition. The military-industrial complex types will throw all their money and energy for the next four to six weeks into defeating him, and the eventual Republican nominee will already have been through hell before he even gets to campaigning in the general.

Then he’ll have to face off against Ron Paul (who will draw off the batshit-racist/militia contingent of the Republican party) and the Democratic nominee, who will be able to pick up every independent in the country.

Meanwhile, I like Edwards and Obama both enough to vote for them at the top of a ticket, and I couldn’t be more pleased at the way the Dem primaries are shaping up.

Part of me really wants to see AwShucksabee win the GOP nomination and win the presidency, mainly because having a religious nutjob in control and seeing the devastation wrought from such may finally put to rest the idea that belief in Mythical Action Jeebus! gives one ability to lead, reason, or be moral.
I suspect that part of the reason that jeebus mythology has faded in Europe is that they’ve seen first hand how bad it goes when the nuts are in charge.

“Really. Only eight years? Do you have a compelling reason to dislike Obama that wouldn’t apply equally well to Bill Clinton?

I can’t stand him and his kinder-gentler-DLC bullshit myself, but Obama is still probably better than anyone this country’s elected president since LBJ.”

I’ve never had a problem with Clinton, he was a horny fucker to be sure, but the GOP witchhunts have more to do with how people view the Clintons than Clintons actual Presidency.

Obama won’t be able to vote ‘present’ in the White House…that’s going to be a sea change for him.. So I don’t see any sign of greatness in Obama other than what the media has tried to implant in the people. It’s going to take more than parading around with Oprah and anti-gay televangilists for him to get my vote.

Oh, and I probably would vote for Bloomberg.

In a state where party registration is pretty well split 50/50 between the two major parties and there was a record smashing turn-out, twice as many people turned out to caucus for the Democrats as the Rethuglicans in Iowa. Of the young voters, consider this.

“22% of the Democratic caucus goers were young voters, up from 17% in 2004.

A total of 56,875 young people were caucus-goers with 46,640 caucusing with Democrats. Only 10,235 young people caucused with Republicans.”

Something is certainly amiss in the G(ang) O(f) P(edophiles). That, is central to my point.

And I suspect it’s this more than anything that explains Obama’s margin or victory. It’ll be interesting to see if these demographics repeat in other primaries/caucuses.

Yonna, this may seem obvious . . .

Isn’t Yonna that Juliet Smith’s Diary person that slapped itself and its sockpuppet silly for most of a thread a while back?

Smiling Mortician

uh, that’s margin of victory

it’s not a matter of “when will America collapse”, but “how long do we have”.

Speaking as a foreigner, I’m of the opinion that America has already collapsed. However, the American public probably won’t realize it for another twenty years. Thirty at the outside.

Oh, sure. But: Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, NAFTA, DOMA, gutting welfare, fucking up health care reform, etc. In terms of policy, Clinton did not represent a significant deviation from Bush 1.

Obama won’t be able to vote ‘present’ in the White House…that’s going to be a sea change for him..

Wow, I’m really surprised to see that a transparent right-wing slur like that has made its way into the pwogblogs.

So I don’t see any sign of greatness in Obama other than what the media has tried to implant in the people.

If you’re waiting for the US to elect a “great” president, you’re going to be waiting for a very long time. In the meantime, I’ll settle for someone who appears to have even the slightest glimmer of humanity.

@thelogos…jeepers, weren’t the last 8 years of Jeebus’ chosen boy enough to show the nation that a strong faith and no brain don’t get you very far?

I would have hoped so but Huck’n’Chuck’s surge is just so…depressing.

A scary thought is a McCain/Huckabee ticket. I think Huck will continue to play strong, but agree with the sentiments expressed above that the Iowa result ultimately favors McCain (I hereby retract this if McCain gets trounced in NH). Fred, Rudy and Mitt are DOA given all of their various flaws.

So, if you are McCain, why not choose Huck at your VP? You re-energize and plug in to the a base of support that you have been at odds with over the years.

So – the question is this: can that ticket win over a Democrat pu-pu platter where the demographic trends in some key areas (mainly the Mountain West and Southwest) are starting to favor the Democrats? The mass of California transplants to the Mountain West has purpled those states pretty well – this was seen in the 2006 mid-terms at botht he statehouse and Congressional levels. On top of that, the rising Hispanic political power will tend to favor Democrats in those same areas – obviously the hardline immigration stance of the GOP has hurt them as well, although McCain and Huck are not as damaged by this as the DOA group.

Tying back to Jillian’s point, can a McCain/Huck ticket be a last gasp for the GOP? Think of this: McCain, at his age, might only be a one-termer, he then hands it off to Huckabee, who has had four years to smooth over the deficiencies in his resume (this was also alluded to above).

It remains to be seen if it is a “surge”. The only Repubs that turned out last night in Iowa were the wacko Godbothers. And Huck is definately their man.

Well, if y’all elect me, I promise to go on O’Reilly’s show and hit him with a Chrysler. As far as I’m concerned, that would qualify me as great.

I got an even more frightening GOP ticket for ya Anton:
Huckabee/Rice.
Huck for the nutjobs and Rice bringing in the neo-con votes.

Just speaking from my own experience growing up in a former colonial superpower. It takes a while for the actualite to sink in. Your nation will go through several stages of grief before it realizes it is no longer as great a world power as it was.

The first stage, of course, will be denial…

Djur, I don’t argue with people who think Clinton did NAFTA. It’s a waste of time, and I always win.

The point is that Clinton continued Bush 1’s policies. Are you actually suggesting that Clinton didn’t support NAFTA?

The point is it wasn’t even Bush 1’s policies. The point was it was Reagans brainchild, the point is it was negotiated thru 2 republican administrations, the point is the treaty was signed by Bush 1, and the point is it was enacted into law with bipartisan support….and you want to just say ‘It’s Clintons fault.’

I’ve had enough of that shit.
