Shorter Dennis Prager

‘Shorter’ concept created by Daniel Davies and perfected by Elton Beard.
The bulk of this week’s column is given over to quoting various entertainers’ use of swear words:
In response to this, I will receive e-mails cursing me and noting that Vice President Dick Cheney once whispered a curse at Democratic Sen. Pat Leahy — on the floor of the Senate, no less. These e-mailers — and, to be honest, some religious conservatives as well — do not see any difference between cursing in public and using an expletive in a whisper. Many people have lost the ability to judge actions in context or to acknowledge gradations of sin. Is whispering the f-word when one assumes that no one else hears you say it really no different from using that word in a published interview or on a television show?
Indeed, for the vice president is the only Republican who’s ever been known to curse — and even then he swore so quietly that it’s debatable whether the word escaped his lips, or if it instead collapsed meekly and perished in his mouth, where not even God could hear its dying cries.
Frankly, I’m disappointed that Prager passed up the opportunity to slander our secular religion by twisting Twain’s famous quote on profanity providing a relief denied even to prayer. Feel free to riff on that, Dennis, and perhaps next year we’ll qualify for Best Comity Blog!
I am sending Mister (Reverend?) Prager a string of pearls (no, not those pearls, filthy minds!) to clutch to his bosom. They may not stave off the vapors, but at least he’ll look nice.
Is cursing the 8th deadly sin? If it is, I’m fucked.
As Roy Edroso just said, civility is always a one-way street with these guys.
(Reverend?) Prager
I’m not sure if Judeo-Christians have reverends in their religion. I think they’re called something else.
What is amusing is that all these curses relate to sex–that is they are Protestant curses. A good Catholic always knows to curse using religious figures. I picked up a few in Quebec that that few atheists would be comfortably saying.
And it is my Jewish Friends who usually swear by yelling ‘Christ!’
But Prager presents a problem: what does an observant Jew who is a professional apologist for fundamental Christianism say when he stubs his toe?
And I’m sure the US Marines are full of non-swearing conservatives, as polite and well-mannered as Dennis himself.
Gimme a fucking break.
I read that the plot of Saw 5 is about a group of people who wake up to find themselves in a strange room with Dennis Prager. It’s the most horrific and sickening of the series.
This, too, is a dogma of the left: Before our invasion of Iraq, the Muslim world was populated by peaceful young men
Denny? Replace “left” with “right” and “Before” with “After” and “was” with “is” and I’m with you.
Not gonna read it, SN. Not gonna read it.
It goes without saying — right? — that whispering a curse (or any insult), as opposed to looking your opponent in the eye & speaking it clearly, is cowardly. I ain’t sayin’ I ain’t done it m’self, but it is what it is.
O.K. I read it. Damn you, SN! Damn you to hell!
Fucking bedwetters.
“Whispered”? When did the official narrative cease to be “Cheney’s manly and deserved takedown of that traitor Leahy, full and throaty, gargly and phlegmy, reverberating through the Senate” to “Cheney’s righteous anger tempered by his natural decorum and respect for God, man, and the legislature”? It sounds so, I don’t know, desperately made up, like claiming that W was stopped for DUI for driving too slow.
Many people have lost the ability to judge actions in context or to acknowledge gradations of sin.
Is anyone else appalled by the arrogance of this statement?
“Most people have a different, less, er, enthusiastic set of morals and ethics than I do, so they must be wrong, evil sinners the lot of ’em, and thank all that’s holy I’m here to set ’em straight.”
Just yesterday I was having an argument with a couple people about how to spell a particular word. And you know what was weird? Not only were they all wrong, Webster was wrong too!
mikey
Ah, yes – those sweetly blasphemous Quebequois swears of my youf (spelling and grammar from memory – corrections welcomed):
“Chapeau plein d’hostis!” usually shortened to just “Hostis!” and accompanied by a loud stomp of the foot.
Translation – “Hat full of hosts (communion wafers)!” or shorter, “Hosts!” which are then stomped on.
Another – “Moudit Christ de Calvert!” shortened to “Calvert!”
Translation “Damn Christ on Calvary (the cross)!”
Finally – “Caulice!” (“Chalice” – vessel for communion wine/blood o’ Christ). I think the longer version of this one included references to urinating, but I only ever heard the short version.
Good times.
A good Catholic always knows to curse using religious figures. I picked up a few in Quebec that that few atheists would be comfortably saying.
Merde de shit de merde de fuck de TABERNAC!
what does an observant Jew who is a professional apologist for fundamental Christianism say when he stubs his toe?
“Prager!”
Actually, let’s turn ‘Prager’ into the filthiest word of all.
Filthier than Santorum?
Fuck you, Prager.
“the left lacks serious thought!” Yeah, lumping Iran, Iraq, and North Korea into an “axis of evil” is very intellectual and serious. So is invading Iraq with absolutely no plan whatsoever for what is to follow. Sticking your head in the sand and going “lalalalala” to ignore the scientific consensus on global climate change: very mature and serious. Bombing Iran: serious! Playing guitar and shopping for shoes while New Orleans drowns, trying to convince people that Reagan spoke for states’ rights at Philadelphia, Mississippi for non-racial reasons, telling the world that waterboarding is not torture, preaching about how if we pave over Alaska and drill for oil we will be less dependent on oil. . . all very intellectually profoud.
Fuck you, Dennis Prager, of Townhall.com.
Many people have lost the ability to judge actions in context or to acknowledge gradations of sin.
Yes, for instance, many conservatives apparently believe that swearing is actually worse than governmental corruption, or wars that kill hundreds of thousands of people and destroy whole societies.
And I’m sure the US Marines are full of non-swearing conservatives, as polite and well-mannered as Dennis himself.
These pearl clutchers would be shocked at how often people in the military curse. Prager could talk to one E-4 for an hour and hear more f-bombs than he thought humanly possible.
“A whoreson jackanapes must take me up for swearing; as if I borrowed mine oaths of him and might not spend them at my pleasure. When a gentleman is disposed to swear, it is not for any standers-by to curtail his oaths, ha?”
What michael d said. Plus, we all know that a whispered invective carries only the gentlest of intents. It’s almost like a pillow fight.
here’s one of my old favorites
“Prager go piss up a rope”
As my dad would say “What a hoople”
Because every article at Town Hall lately has to have a passage saying slavery in the US wasn’t so bad or downplaying the slaughters that made the nation’s existence possible, Prager gets up from his fainting couch long enough to take a swipe at a Jane Goodall quote:
Right, anywhere Europeans showed up and took over it was because the indigenous people were worn out and in need of replacement. Were they stained? Chipped? Too many miles on those civilizations and the maintenance costs were getting too high for any meaningful ROI? And why does he put indigenous peoples in scare quotes? Is he trying to plant seeds of doubt that they were really here and in Australia, New Zealand, etc. before whitey? What a dick.
See Dick.
See Dick curse.
Curse, Dick, curse.
I did not hear you, Dick.
Please curse louder.
Whole lotta forks and soots in those excerpts. Of course, I wasn’t interviewed, as I one crammed a Jackson Browne LP into Jann Wenner’s lower G-I tract… sideways.
Actually, based on his minimization of their humanity I guess I have to hold out the possibility that it’s their very peoplehood and not their indigenity that he’s trying to call in to question with the scare quotes. Wouldn’t want to misinterpret him.
“Prager!”
Actually, let’s turn ‘Prager’ into the filthiest word of all.
I was trying to come with something about Torquemada’s Jewish grandmother, but not knowing Yiddish or Spanish I could not come up with anything very snappy.
Maybe “pragering” could describe a blasphemous self-administered sex act of some kind. Or maybe just farting in the synagogue.
Dennis Prager is a major league asshole!
Bigtime!
I think he is minimizing the idea of ‘indigenous’ – since people have migrated constantly through history, conquering along the way, those indians/autochtones/aboriginals are not more indigneous than European conquerors. This trope was famously originated by pat Buchannan, who dismisses Native Americans as ‘Siberian-Americans’.
Keeping up with all the wingnut codewords takes a fair bit of work at times. It si like learning a whole new language that uses English words but changes their meanings.
what does an observant Jew who is a professional apologist for fundamental Christianism say when he stubs his toe?
Oy diddly vey?
“Gradations of sin” sounds like moral relativism to me. According to the recent crop of conservatives its a slippery slope from judging actions by their context to concentration camps and gulags.
Within that framework a failure to rebuke Dick Cheney any less than a person who swears loudly and publicly is utterly immoral. For shame Dennis Prager, for shame.
Fuck Dennis Prager in the eye with a rusty hacksaw.
Whatever definition we come up with for ‘Pragering’, it has to involve multiple wetsuits.
Many people have lost the ability to judge actions in context or to acknowledge gradations of sin.
Wait…don’t “judging actions in context” and “acknowledging gradations of sin” qualify as “moral relativism”? Aren’t the fundies supposed to be against that?
New wingnut definition of “moral absolutism”: “Anything my side does is absolutely moral. Anything your side does is absolutely immoral.”
Someone needs to sit Li’l Denny down for a day-long audio tour of the Nixon tapes. Now that was some good Gawd Fearin’ Republican cussin’.
Here’s one I learned in Italy from a Spanish woman: Ostea! Must be said loudly and vehemently. Basically it means the bones/body of Christ so you need to be catholic I guess to get it. And it is cross-culturally useful too, the Italians always looked a little shocked when she said it.
Prager makes my Jewish husband feel embarassed that anyone with his cultural background could be such a vocal asswipe.
So, the effect of the Cheetohs and Mtn Dew was to make you like Bradrocket?
I guess it could have been worse… much worse!
And, I can’t wait to hear more about “gradations of sin” from the guys who advocate torture but draw the line at saying “fuck” in public.
This is a new one. Originally, when Cheney dropped the F-bomb the conservative response was: “You Lefties are too sensitive. Everyone swears, get over it, blarg blarg.” Of course, the next time a celeb cursed in a public venue (it was either Whoopi or Bono), the fainting couch came right back out of the closet.
Makes me wonder what Prager thinks about Justice Scalia speaking an obscene phrase AND giving an obscene gesture into a camera. Maybe it doesn’t count as a swear if it’s not English?
Jesus Fucking Christ, the comment section over there is too precious – a bunch of sanctimonious bedwetters discussing the relative merits (or lack thereof) of the dreaded “eff” word. I can’t post over there, but I wonder if their delicate sensibilities would be crushed by learning about McCain supporters referring to Hillary as a “bitch.”
http://tpmelectioncentral.com/2007/11/report_mccain_stands_by_as_his_supporter_calls_hillary_bitch.php
Somehow, I’m quite certain that there is an entirely non-self-serving explanation for why such an incident doesn’t give them the vapors.
It seems the solution is to re-invent the internets to permit whispering. Then we would all be so civil!
“Aw, secularism! That hurt!”
Man! Prager SCHOOLED Jane Goodall. What the fuck does she know, anyway.
“They train young men to drop fire on people. But their commanders won’t allow them to write ‘fuck’ on their airplanes because it’s obscene!”
-Apocalypse Now
Well, fuckity fuck fuck. Saying fuck & shit is a sin? They are just words. Prager can go pound sand up his stupid ass for all I care.
I’m going to publish an edition of Norman Mailer’s ‘The Naked and the Dead’ with “fugg” replaced by “fuck”. I’ll dedicate it to wilting fucking flower Dennis fucking Prager. Fuckface!
Exactly, Dorothy!
Except I don’t think that is new. I think it has always been the mechanism of the Authoritarian Right.
Just makes everything easier, don’t it?
Makes me wonder what Prager thinks about Justice Scalia speaking an obscene phrase AND giving an obscene gesture into a camera. Maybe it doesn’t count as a swear if it’s not English?
No, that was ok because he was coming out of church. Having just received communion, he was more sparkly pure than godless liberals will ever be. (Especially the ones who try to give women choices not allowed by Catholic doctrine)
So see, they cancel each other out and he is still better.
“Gradations of sin”
Good band name. Just sayin.
Didn’t “Casino Bill” Bennett already tackle this?
Another week or so and we’re going to get another round of “Naughty word count” posts.
So ya know like fucking pour it on!
In my experience, the word “fuck” is “whispered” much more often in the context of actual fucking, not in an altercation, because the whole point of expletives is to _shout_ them. Whispering is intimate. If Dick Cheney “whispered” “go fuck yourself” to Leahy, in my book, that makes it a come-on.
Dear me. I hope nobody tells Prager about this:
Although I suppose if George D. “Patsy” Bush actually used the word “screw” then that’s okay, then.
The “cultural left?” Didn’t know culture was divisible along political lines, despite what these idiotic fucksticks say.
Waht could be more superficial than these “cultural norms” that actually limit our lexicon, because some words are considered “obscene?”
“These people” do have an influence on American life. They wouldn’t be in a mass circulation rag like Rolling Stone if they weren’t popular. Get a clue, Denny. Every name you mentioned is many times more influential than your radio show & Clownhall column combined. You’re a shitty fucking joke, in other words.
I might also point out that the mere utterance of the words “fuck” or “shit” are not curses. They are neither curse nor swear words. “God, damn Dennis Prager & all others like him to hell,” that’s a curse!! It calls for an action against the cursed.
Please, Dennis, you superficial fucknozzle, can you explain the difference between saying “bee em, poopy, doody, waste matter, feces,” & so on, & simply saying “shit?” What makes one of many words, all w/ the same meaning, vulgar & obscene? Cultural norms? It’s like, I dunno, wordism or something.
And you really have to laugh at the shitheads who say, “Oh, your use of dirty words reveals the poverty of your vocabulary,” when they are the ones impoverishing their vocabularies by denying themselves the use of perfectly good words.
The Apocalypse Now quote above from Rufus sums it up. Shorter Prager: “I’m in a superficial cultural norms tizzy over poopie-doodie, but torture & wholesale murder committed in my name & at my urging are nothing to get excited about.”
“Wordism” ©2007 for the Entire Universe by Malignant Bouffant.
Merde de shit de merde de fuck de PRAGER!
(That’s pronounced “pray-GHEY!”)
Woo-hoo! I is now a neoconologizer!!
“the left lacks serious thought!” It’s YOUR crew, Denny, that cant see beyond- “Urrr, faaaagggs baaaadddd. Urrrrr…. brooooown people bad.”
the interviews reveal a superficiality and contempt for cultural norms(as evidenced by the ubiquity of curse words)
In addition to the point already made that such a norm is inherently superficial, it’s not as if cursing were not already the norm.
I’m with FlipYrWhig here. I don’t recall ever whispering “go fuck yourself” to anyone ever. But if you’re whispering “fuck” to someone, it’s probably just another wide stance move, no?
I skimmed down until I got to the part about how commenting on the plight of indigenous people is just another way to stick it to the man. Then I came over here intending to Santorum Prager and found you all are way ahead of me.
Yep.
Prager = n. A dildo or sex toy found in the anus of a preacher who has been dead a few days. May also be used to describe said objects when used by members of the Right. ie: Prager never cleans his prager, which really upsets his specially trained sheep.
How’s that for a start?
And having read the entire mess, we come to this:
God forbid (Is that a “curse?”) any one should interfere w/ Prager’s
ReaganesquePollyannaish “optimism,” but take a look at this, from today’s WaPo:Not that there’s much reason for Euro-Americans to be optimistic either. If Prager’s so worried about middle-class values & Judeo-Christianity
he might try writing something about the disappearance of the middle-class, black, white & otherwise, & about the Judeo-Christian values of camels passing through a needle’s eye & rich people getting into heaven. Maybe not though, now that he’s fully embraced moral relativism.
The romanticizing of “indigenous peoples” is a popular leftist myth, believed not because it is true
Ah, those noble savages. Their primitivism untainted by the malign corrosion of modernity. Glorified by conservative and rightwing ideologues.
Sorry, Malignant Bouffant.
6310 hits on google for Wordism.
I got burned before, with ‘Progosphere’.
I like how he’s all, “Blah blah blah indigenous peoples raped the land.” Any chance he’s going to go into detail about exactly which cultures he’s talking about, or is “indigenous peoples” just a catch-all phrase for “backwards-ass animals”?
Oh, you kids & your Googly-Moogly!! You wouldn’t have looked it up it you weren’t hoping to high-jack it!! Have you no middle-class J-C values?
“indigenous peoples” means “non-white people” to fucks like Prager.
So, since when does Cheney whisper his curses? This is the first time I’ve heard that claim. Did Prager just make that one up? If so, that would mark his first original thought. Ever.
Of course, Prager (nice Santorumesque definition, by the way) is probably one of those who don’t want teh brown people coming to America, because it’s “our” country. And he probably decries the increasing Muslim presence in Europe, too. And somehow the cognitive dissonance of believing this doesn’t crack his skull in half.
What a queynte!
I like how he’s all, “Blah blah blah indigenous peoples raped the land.”
Since Prager makes this obvious lie which he knows to be a lie is he implying then that swearing is worse than lying?
Wonder what his bible says?
Praeger was simply caught in a a totally heterosexual daydream when he conceived of this piece. Cheney being very gentle – yet firm – whilst whispering “go fuck yourself” is a very arousing scenario for your average wingnut.
Sorry,
Prev comment on wrong thread. More caffeine, please!
I am always amused at how these guys pretend that use of these words is somehow uncommon or unheard of.
The fact that in most of the quotes, the words aren’t used as curses at all is a perfect illustation of how normal their use has become.
Of all the quotes Prager uses the only one that is actually a curse is Cheney’s use – he’s using the invective to direct to another person.
The others are simply using the words as intensifiers or as a substitute for “stuff” or for the vernacular version of “failed at.”
I fucking hope Dennis fucking Prager fucking breaks his fucking back trying to fuck himself in his fucking ear. The fuck.
g, you are so right! I almost brought in one of my dictionaries’ definitions of “fucking” as a “meaningless intensifier.” And of course “shit,” as used, is more a substituion for “stuff” than for “poopy-doodie.” But in Prager’s world, all that matters is hollow symbolism, & the superficiality that he decries.
It reminds me of the South Park where they say so many ‘Words of Curse’ that the Armageddon starts. I’m pretty sure the had a Curse Counter on that episode.
The horror!
What is the substantive difference between Fuckin’ (my favorite word) and Freakin’ (my 10 year-old’s favorite word)?

[urk] Man, that mental image is nastier than my definition of Prager.
Ice chips please!

I’ll go with that. But it has to be adaptable: i.e. “Prager likes to be pragered with his prager.”
Sorry, I’ve always wanted to do this. I caught this article by Star Parker at a barbershop today.

Consumer protection is liberal micromanagement.
what does an observant Jew who is a professional apologist for fundamental Christianism say when he stubs his toe?
Jesus Fuck!
Well, thats what I say, anyway. And though I’m not an observant Jew nor an apologist for fundy Christians, if it’s good enough for me, it should be good enough for Prager.
what does an observant Jew who is a professional apologist for fundamental Christianism say when he stubs his toe?

I second, third, and fourth that. With bells on.
All this talk of ‘graduations of sin’ confirms my suspicion that universities these days will hand out a degree for practically anything.
In my day, a B.Culpa meant something.
Given This, and this:
Can anyone explain why this man is opposed to gay marriage?
“But Prager presents a problem: what does an observant Jew who is a professional apologist for fundamental Christianism say when he stubs his toe?”
“Mohammad!”, of course.
O.K., as indicated earlier, I didn’t find the Tancredo ad all that. But I was at the dentist’s this morning, and at one point he made an explosion sound to illustrate a point (“If you don’t get that opposing tooth capped before you get the implant, the force of the implant against it will be …. kaboom!”)
When he made the explosion sound, I flashed on the ad and couldn’t stop laughing. And it was one of those situations where there was no way to explain adequately. After I stop giggling and explained to him why, he said, “Oh.”
Then we went on to discuss my treatment plan. Good times. Good times.
What is the substantive difference between Fuckin’ (my favorite word) and Freakin’ (my 10 year-old’s favorite word)?
Vowels. And consonants.
Dennis Prager and “Not that there’s anything wrong with that”
