Foto Funnies Pt. II
From Little Green Footballs, 9/21/07:
Above: Screen-capture of LGF post
That’s a reprinted press release from David Horowitz’s FrontPageMag. The text reads, “The photo accompanying this article, which shows a teenage girl buried before being stoned to death for alleged sexual offenses, will serve as the poster for the protest Week. The stoning took place in Iran.”
This photo turns up all over the right-wing media, but the ‘stoning’ actually takes place in a 1994 Dutch indie film called De Steen, directed by Mahnaz Tamizi. The ‘teenage girl’ is actress Smadar Monsinos.

Whoopsie. Looks like David Horowitz left a few people hanging out to dry.
The Week’s events will include speeches about Islamo-Fascism by prominent figures, including former Senator Rick Santorum (Penn State, Temple and UPenn), Sean Hannity (Columbia), Ann Coulter (Tulane and USC), Dennis Prager (UC Santa Barbara), Robert Spencer (Brown, Dartmouth, University of Rhode Island, and DePaul), Daniel Pipes (Northeastern and UPenn), David Horowitz (Columbia, Emory, Ohio State, Michigan and Wisconsin), Michael Ledeen (Maryland), Nonie Darwish (UCLA and Berkeley), Wafa Sultan (Stanford) and radio talk show hosts Melanie Morgan (San Francisco State), Michael Medved (University of Washington), Martha Zoeller (Georgia Tech), Alan Nathan (George Mason), Mark Larson (to be named) and many others.
Perhaps Confederate Yankee can do his usual thing and request, nay, demand that these people denounce the fraudulent fabulism with fake photo images racka-fracka boldly perpetrated in their names, hummana-hummana, etc — and that they do the decent thing and resign.
Bonus LGF comments:

And there’s an example of a picture that’s worth alot more than a thousand words —
— they really are barbaric.

I’m not going to be able to get that photo out of my mind any time soon.
Yeah, we bet.
I’m still waiting for these chuckle-heads to define “Islamofascism.”
So those universities are places where the aforementioned are going to speak?
Must be. Otherwise David Horowitz went to five schools. And, I mean, come on.
Doesn’t anyone on the right source check?
I said it before and now I’ll say it again…Sweet Zombie Jesus, that just DUMB!!
More “fake, but accurate”
The truth may appear to be unpatriotic at times, but that is only because [insert enemy] is so clever and wiley, seducing us into his America-destroying anti-freedomism. The greater truth is ALWAYS patriotic, even if we can’t see it at the time, so your first duty is patriotism. The rest will be cleaned up by our specially screened historians.
To be patriotic:
1) Follow the Leader
2) Hate the Enemy
3) Hate anyone who doesn’t follow the Leader
4) Hate anyone who doesn’t hate the enemy enough
Obviously you will spend the bulk of your time hating, but that is how we show our support. The truth will prevail, even if we have to spend the whole night on photoshop
Since that stoning never actually happened, the invisible photo is strangely appropriate.
Also, when did he switch to full on CLINTONAZILAMOFASCIST ARE DESTROYING FREEDOMERACADEMISRAEL mode? I remember him being slightly saner than that, though not by much.
I’m still waiting for these chuckle-heads to define “Islamofascism.”
Really. Since fascism in its purest form involves the fusion of the state and corporate interests, which corporations should we be boycotting in order to turn the tide of this swarthy scourge?
(crickets chirp)
Here’s a site that’s still using the picture. They’ve even got a how-to guide for student groups that want hold Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week events.
Someone less restrained than myself might be tempted to get up to some sort of hijinks with that sort of information.
I resent being judged by the actions of a few extreme followers. Though I may have decided to let them into heaven, it does not mean that I condone their research methods or political views, anymore than Dr. Pantload printing an email shows agreement of the views expressed in said email. This should be obvious.
agreement with the views…etc
This is just so self-serving and transparent.
How come the only time they are concerned with gays’ and women’s rights is when those rights are being impugned in a country they want bomb?
Praise you, Sweet Zombie Jesus.
That stoning is not fake, it actually took place. Hundreds of us witnessed it in Iran.
Update: I’ve been told the stoning we saw wasn’t in Iran, but somewhere in CA. There aren’t any video or pictures, so you’ll just have to take my word for it.
Look you ass holes, I was THERE and I SAW this happen with my own eyes.
…
I was back about the 14th row
Shit … snooper beat me to it. Again.
From the schools listed in Marita’s link, I bring you……
Messiah College
That’s all it takes… you’re in, Clutch414.
Thanks, Marita.
From the link:
Rocked! ROCKED I TELL YOU!!!1!!
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Methinks a flock of seagulls sized turn-out, no?
I’m going to as many of these events as I can.
Those are classy schools, and I just know that there will be hot chicks making out in the front row of every lecture hall.
Sweet Zombie Jesus, may I be so bold to ask your Grace a question?
Are you related to Jesus H. Christ or Jesus F’n Christ? I had a friend in high school who had a crusty old grandfather who used to invoke those two all the time. First cousins maybe?
And as always…Praise you, Sweet Zombie Jesus.
Just for the record, I’m of no relation to that Zombie Christ asshole, and we’re not on speaking terms.
“During the week of October 22-26, 2007, the nation will be rocked by the biggest conservative campus protest ever – Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week, a wake-up call for Americans on 200 university and college campuses.”
I’m taking the under bet on the “rocking” of our nation.
Those 50 guys, the goat, and their keg are going to be hella busy visiting 200 campuses in 4 days…
“I’m taking the under bet on the “rocking” of our nation.”
I’m taking the under also. I mean, who else could conservatively rock other than the Nuge and he’s soooooooo 1977.
Ungh. Included in their how-to kit is an “Appeal to Muslim Students Associations” to join with them. Yes, all Muslims must loudly and repeatedly denounce the activity of terrorists, otherwise they’re obviously terrorists themselves!
There’s also this:
I would think their little petition would be terribly easy to spoof, if someone on one of these campuses were inclined to gather signatures on a parody petition. Just sayin’.
“How come the only time they are concerned with gays’ and women’s rights is when those rights are being impugned in a country they want bomb?”
Good question. And, really, why aren’t they holding up Iran as the model of a good, moral society that would be willing to kill these people in God’s name? Not very consistent on their moral certainty/absolutism, are they?
And whatever happened to those godless commies? I recall that these same people were telling us that they were going to take over the world 35 years ago.
These are the same assholes who hold “Conservative Coming Out Days,” and wonder why most people over the age of 16 think they’re total douches.
Also…is it even possible to rock out “conservatively?” Isn’t that the antithesis of rocking?
I mean…If I were still so F’n metal with the umlat in my name, I’d be able to tell you…but since I’m less-than-F’n-metal I can’t. That’s why I ask.
Conservative Coming Out Days?!?!?
Talk about Freudian!!
Seriously? Who do they have a the Master of Ceremonies…Senator Larry “Wide Stance” Craig?
And whatever happened to those godless commies?
Well, Innocent Bystander, in the case of David Horowitz, he was one of those godless commies. It gives him some sort of strange credibility that he’s “seen the other side”. His current supporters don’t seem disturbed in the slightest that he just veered from one extremist ideology to another.
Interestingly, his methods remain unchanged.
Legalize: don’t forget the Affirmative Action Bake Sales. Those are like, the classiest thing ever.
The fact that it was an actress, and that the stoning appeared in a film, in no way reduces the possibility of it being a real stoning, or at the very least, a plausible stoning, for those of us who are sensitive to the issues of stoning. Or perhaps I should say those of us whose sensitivities haven’t been dulled by years of exposure to lesbianism, or gay-leather bacchanalia bullwhip fetes.
Someone with very close connections to the stoning reports to me that the stoning did take place as shown in the photograph, and stills shot from a different angle are pretty conclusive. I will be examining them for myself, and will give you my impressions.
Doesn’t anyone on the right source check?
Lying, slander, inventing evidence, doctoring and misrepresenting photos are an integral part of the right’s MO. Whatever it takes to ensure neoconservative ideals prevail is considered fair game. It works for them, too. By the time people catch on, they’ve moved onto new lies. Make no mistake: the liars know full well they are lying and it doesn’t bother them in the slightest.
To be patriotic:
1) Follow the Leader
2) Hate the Enemy
3) Hate anyone who doesn’t follow the Leader
4) Hate anyone who doesn’t hate the enemy
5 )Hate anyone who doesn’t hate anyone who doesn’t follow the leader
6) Hate anyone who doesn’t hate anyone who doesn’t hate the enemy
7)Hate anyone who doesn’t hate anyone who doesn’t hate anyone who doesn’t follow the leader
8)Hate anyone who doesn’t hate anyone who doesn’t hate anyone who doesn’t hate the enemy
9)Hate anyone who doesn’t hate anyone who doesn’t hate anyone who doesn’t hate anyone who doesn’t follow the leader
10)Hate anyone who doesn’t hate anyone hate anyone who doesn’t hate anyone who doesn’t hate the enemy
….
you get the idea
See I see that wart on the ass of society Sean Hannity is scheduled to blargh! at Columbia. How much you guys wanna bet that the very same voices who were screaming that Ahmadenejad should never have been allowed to speak there will be the same ones claiming that any protesting of Douchebag Hannity (no offense to actual feminine hygiene products) is “Stifling free speech!!twelve!”?
#61 Abu Al-Poopypants 9/21/07 12:22:31 pm
I’m not going to be able to get that photo out of my mind any time soon…..
……ooh, cheddar barbeque!”
“So I see,” not “See I see.” D’oh.
Hey- Humor Me.
You don’t know shiat about stoning.
Personally, I prefer a medium sized glass piece, with a pull carb. Clean water is a must, and if its a little cold, all the better. Make sure no resin goblins are clogging the works, break off .2 – .3 g’s of the home grown Chron, and use your Bic to light that shit! ( What good is saving 75 cents on a lighter if its gonna let you down, mid-toke?)
Now that’s a stoning!
but just try P’shopping celery and pizza slices to some right wing goon’s image and you get nothing but boohoohoos from these sensitive people.
Sweet Fucking Jesus! Ever since JFC hit puberty and decided that his name was “Fucking Christ from now on”, and that he wasn’t about to “take any labels from this family” because we were “bourgeoisie”, He’s been on this tear about “no relation” to the Family, but who the hell does He come crying to when He’s in the tank in Reno with a sexual assault charge being drawn up, and needs 75 large for bail?
Wow, another entry in the Horowitz File for mad research skillz.
I’m surprised that heads aren’t exploding. The Dutch director’s site is trying to prevent executions, both by stoning and by hanging and other means.
How do RW’ers reconcile their outrage at Islamic states executing citizens they believe to be criminal, with their enthusiastic approval of the US executing criminals?
Sources tell me that topping with a small bit of light hash, and using only filtered, chilled water, produces excellent results, but I’ve got to do the math and verify it for myself.
“How do RW’ers reconcile their outrage at Islamic states executing citizens they believe to be criminal, with their enthusiastic approval of the US executing criminals?”
Maybe they write it off as delicious irony?
I’m telling you I was THERE, and I saw jesus fucking christ in the Washoe county jail. We split the last third of a joint they didn’t see in my cap…
mikey
Don’t you dare put me in with those folks.
everyone remember the important thing is not to call him “D-Ho”.
ah those were the days.
Caught another LGF whoopsie today — or more specifically a front page dang-let’s-go-back-and-edit-that-out-we-looked-ridiculous-oopsie. Check it at http://www.warcheerleaders.andmuchmore.com
“The Week’s events will include speeches about Islamo-Fascism by prominent figures–
NONE of whom have any expertise on the subject of Islam with the lone exception of Nonie Darwish who lazily concedes that the “moderate majority” of Muslims in the Middle East are passively taking orders from Hezbollah and Hamas and that Arab hatred comes out of a vacuum. Hello? You have a “moderate majority” right here held hostage by a lunatic fringe wreaking havoc worldwide. How will she will react when some of the speakers lose their wingnut-meta-filters and start calling for internments and expulsions?
So, ummm…I’m Christian and I want to renounce Christofacism, especially as it relates to Bush. Where do I sign up for that?
Mikey, That little weasel has been in every county jail in a dozen states. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit. And He’s a well-known stoner, developed a huge interest in incense and scented candles when He was 11. Started hanging around with Ganesha and that crowd, and well..you know the story.
Hey! I was at that stoning. IT totally took place! I was the guy in the front row with a huge ass boulder.
Alright, Humor, now where having a spirited debate!
I see your hash, and raise you some Keef.
“How do RW’ers reconcile their outrage at Islamic states executing citizens they believe to be criminal, with their enthusiastic approval of the US executing criminals?”
Like they do anytime their inconsistency and hypocrisy are pointed back at them: whine about “moral equivalence.”
Might teenage actress Smadar Monsinos be kind enough to appear at these speeches? To give a first-hand account of the difficulties of being stoned to death?
Seriously, I was stoned to death by Islamofascists as a student. (The “alleged sexual offense” was chatting up a football player’s girlfriend while drunk.) It sure hurts.
I got better,
Capt. Twelve A.M. Midnight, E.S.T., C.E.
AWW, shit, I left my zipper open and my straw-man hanging out.
I am such a nOOb.
Let’s hope a bomb doesn’t go off during this meeting….about 85 percent of the Loony Right-Wing Bloviating Society in this country would be killed!
None of these clueless idiots have been right in anything they’ve said or claimed about the Iraq war and many other subjects…
Don’t listen to Zombie Christ. He’s had it out for me because I am more hansome, more successful, and more totally heterosexual. What? You think Larry Craig invented the “wide stance” move on his own? Gimme a break. Tell the nice people, Zombie Christ.
Don’t forget, everyone, Saudi Arabia is our ally!
“The Week’s events will include speeches about Islamo-Fascism by prominent figures–
Man, it’s a smörgåsbord of bat-shit.
Also, it is easy to debunk all this nonsense about being stoned to death. There has been no conclusive evidence that smoking pot can kill you…
JFC, who I did or did not sleep with in college notwithstanding, at least I am still invited to Thanksgiving dinner.
And since when is a ponytail on a 2000 year old man ” handsome”?
Since someone has to do before the wingnuts swarm us, I’d like to say that wagonjack speaks for no one else here. I don’t know what to do about the problem of wingnuts, but I know violence would only make us as bad as they are.
Extremism is never a solution.
[…] Islamo-fascisim awareness week. […]
Dear Bill Kristol,
How do you keep your keef powdery? Mine always ends up clumping.
I started working on the math, but I didn’t leave enough room in front of the first comma, and I erased a hole in the paper, then I forgot the conversion units for hash, which started life as a little keef, but I digress.
Uh, what?
They stone me when I’m driving in my car.
Also, it is easy to debunk all this nonsense about being stoned to death. There has been no conclusive evidence that smoking pot can kill you…
I dunno. There’s been some times when I was afraid I’d snap my head in two from grinnin’ so hard. Feller I met in Auburn the past spring had a foot-and-a-half bong he packed, I mean PACKED, with chipped ice and loaded up with some of that cancer-curing weed. Son, son. Guy had two great big aquariums full of big ol’ fish like bass and crappie and whatnot, and I slept in the room with ’em. Or tried to, anyway. Goddamn bass just won’t shut up, just yak yak yak.
How do you keep your keef powdery? Mine always ends up clumping.
So, wait. You have it long enough for it to clump up on you? I think I see your problem…
Started hanging around with Ganesha and that crowd, and well..you know the story.
Wait. What? I never!
The petition will ask students and faculty to denounce “Islamo-fascism and the violence directed against women, gays, Christians, Jews and non-religious people.”
You couldn’t get a bigger disconnect if you decided to call Haiti from a rotary phone. The rightwing is now involved in a petition/jihad to protect women, gay, lesbian and atheist rights? Do they even agree with the premise of the statement? Has anyone asked?
Hey douchebags — the left has been on the case for years. Ask Amnesty about Iran, or the Human Rights Watch about forced genital mutilation, or anyone about Sharia and rape cases. Hell, they’re against torture too — but somehow that must be OK if you’re not an Islamofascist.
And while its nice to see y’all come around on the whole gay issue, wouldn’t it be more effective if, as newly-minted Friends of Dorothy, you used your crazy compassion on the rightwingers in this country who hate teh gayz too?
Christ. It’s like watching monkeys figuring out how to use hammers.
There’s only so much one person can smoke in day, Matt. Or in a week, or two months, before there’s a whole new pile to deal with. I do have papers to write and classes to attend, too.
I dunno, I saw that picture and thought, is that “Dennis” prior to being repressed?
Legalize,
Here’s your definition:
Islamofascism is the nasty, icky, terroristically terrifying ickyness which threatens our very way of life itself. At all times. Everywhere. Making us sit always on the edge of our seats just waiting for that imminent attack!
Just so you know, Communislamofascism is the same way, but with commies. And Feminicommunislamofascism has commies and feminazis. Then there are your standard variations such as Mexicafeminicommunislamofascism, which has all those awful things plus reconquistadoras; Feminicommunifeminislamofascism which has extra bacon and play-dough and Sadlynoianfeminicommunislamofascism is what you guys practice here.
Hope that clears things up for you, you stoner!
these fuckheads drone on about ‘femininazis’ and suddenly they become champion of females rights
its appalling
“The rightwing is now involved in a petition/jihad to protect women, gay, lesbian and atheist rights? Do they even agree with the premise of the statement? ”
See, they only want to protect the rights of marginalized groups from Islamofascists, so they can take away those rights in a good old American way.
“watching monkeys figuring out how to use hammers…”
Dude! I can totally picture that.
Hmmmm, I wonder what side of the political spectrum the pro-public-stoning Christian Dominionists are on…?
Thank you Jay B.
I see proportional fonts. Takedown!
[…] . So…is Charles Johnson of Rathergate and Little Green Fascists fame going to concede that he got suckered into promoting a fake foto courtesy of David Horowitz? . Nah, doing so would detract from […]
Well……you could always encourage them to show their support here.
Well, since you asked…
You’ve got Frontpage dead to rights here, IMHO, and LGF’s stunt of redirecting your link instead of just stating FP gave them bad info was silly. I’ll post on it this evening.
I am curious however, in getting a “show of hands” here: How many think that what Frontpage did here was ethically a “firing offense?” If you would, please provide details of why you feel the way you do: I may use your responses later in my post.
Thanks.
But I am giving ’em a few points.
Abu al-Poopypants is a hilarious screen name…
mikey
How many think that what Frontpage did here was ethically a “firing offense?” If you would, please provide details of why you feel the way you do: I may use your responses later in my post.
How’s that grill, Mr. Gotcha?
Feh,
CY, figure it out for yourself whether it was a “firing offense”. You’re SO big on declaring them at the Left, surely you have enough integrity to do the same when your co-religionists screw up.
Or perhaps not. Time will tell…and we will be watching.
For whatever it’s worth, Yankee, I see very little of, on either side, as a “firing offense”. If somebody makes a mistake in good faith, and acts to correct it in a timely fashion, no harm, no foul. If they intended to mislead, consequences should follow.
The problem arises when outside parties think they can dictate the terms of the discussion. I don’t think you have effective “proven” anything with regard to scott beauchamp. A non affirmative statement from “the army” without any report or officer’s signature and nothing from the people who published it. You can’t make a determination, because you are on the outside.
Also, I really think that because of Rathergate, Right Blogistan has gone way over the top with the whole “story/photo/report is a lie!!!” thing. There’s lots of info out there. People can find out the truth if they want. But if you always look like the boy who cried gotcha, it just gets tedious and impairs your credibility.
How’s that for civil discourse, huh?
mikey
How many think that what Frontpage did here was ethically a “firing offense?”
As a point of clarification, do you mean a “firing offense” by Horowitz’s ethical standards, or by the ethical standards of someone who actually has some?
I have never had much problem with the clumping. And I don’t think you live in a climate more humid than Seattle (although in the summer, much of this country besides Seattle enjoys keef-clumping humidity).
It may be the screen size you are using. If it is too big or too small, maybe another element is adding to the clump factor? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think 130 strands per inch is about right.
And any way you look at it, different brad, we really must hang out and debate the various merits of Keef Klumpage some time.
AAAUGH!!!! My scoopable kitty litter clump collection!
Isn’t it up to Frontpage to determine for themselves how they want to balance jingoism and opportunism, CY?
I’d say the intern who found the image is probably in trouble, yes, but are you really going to focus on that aspect of the story?
That’s be like making blowjob-gate about whether Monica should have been fired for putting the Clinton presidency in trouble by putting his penis in her mouth.
Jillian has found a conservative petition worth a damn!
Oh, and Matt T-
Are you speaking of the Auburn formerly known as Slaughter?
Promote the petition far and wide! Encourage every conservative you know to sign it!
I’d say the intern who found the image is probably in trouble, yes, but are you really going to focus on that aspect of the story?
I actually doubt that. Horowitz has a history of being blatantly dishonest. If his past tactics are any indication, the use of ficticious “evidence” wouldn’t bother him – only the risk of getting caught out would.
If addressed, I fully expect Horowitz to attribute the error to the perils of having a “small staff” (not making that quote up, either).
“How come the only time they are concerned with gays’ and women’s rights is when those rights are being impugned in a country they want bomb?”
Same reason for all the crocodile tears over New York on 9/11 — you know, the toddlin’ town Middle America thinks of as Commie-Heimie-Faggy-Town? Pulling a 180 is fun when it means you’ll find a club to beat a Muslim’s head in with!
OK. I’m picturing a sort of Red Guards with giant flags, except they’re all Elly May Clampett, and Daisy Duke, and the flags are big confederate flags, and they’re all serious and marching and waving the flags in huge arcs…maybe some Charlie Daniels blaring from 1940’s style PA horns.
WELCOME CY!
I guess comments at SN! have finally arrived. An accepted source, a sounding board for social and media researchers, looking for the real metrics of the american political intellectual scene.
BREAKING!!
CY braves swampland of liberal delusion, patrons mostly use restrooms and eat with mouths closed. However strong odor of marijuana present, near mens room. Plan is to investigate and document when backup (Ace,VDH,Dr. Mike) arrives.
DEVELOPING!1
I second mikey – If somebody makes a mistake in good faith, and acts to correct it in a timely fashion, no harm, no foul.
But the problem with the photo is that someone has allowed it to be spread far and wide as part of the promo for their series of events. So it’s a little more difficult to recall, or to correct. The fact-checking and correcting should have been done prior to sending out the publicity materials, IMHO.
The rightwing is now involved in a petition/jihad to protect women, gay, lesbian and atheist rights?
The right wing has always been at war with the forces of oppression.
Wait. That photo is Dutch?
See, that just goes to show how far the Islamofascist hordes have come in their jihad. They can flagrantly stone a young woman to death in Dutchland, now, and even take pictures and film while they do it.
How many think that what Frontpage did here was ethically a “firing offense?”
What the hell does that sentence even mean?
Try it again without metaphors, grillboy.
John, I’m afraid that’s how it is, it just creeps across the globe like the red tide or locusts or something. Is it going to take a stoning in central park or epcot for this country to finally wake up? I pray not.
Well, I figured the intern would be in trouble not for, in essence, making shit up, but for being lazy, and not checking where the image they got off Google came from. Dishonest, yes, actively seeking pie on face in a way even mouth breathers can comprehend, no.
There’s not much humidity in my freezer, t4toby, so I dunno. My tumbler was professionally made for the purpose, so it’s the right thread count. I might be running it too long and contaminating it that way, but I just find in general that if you store keef it ends up turning into sugar cube-ish chunks. So I roll a beer bottle filled with hot water over it and turn it into hash.
Hey, good catch. I see, its not a real event, just an artists portrayal of a real event. It doesn’t have that truthiness, you liberals talk about.
Because they don’t really 16 year old kill women in Iran for adultry and they don’t hang your for dissent and hey don’t cane you for having a beer.
Wait a minute. They actually do all those things.
Here is the actual girl hanged at 16 if ya’ll care to look.
http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/189498.php
Doesn’t she look pretty hanging from that crane?
Well, I figured the intern would be in trouble not for, in essence, making shit up, but for being lazy, and not checking where the image they got off Google came from. Dishonest, yes, actively seeking pie on face in a way even mouth breathers can comprehend, no.
Well, see, that’s the thing about Horowitz. He’s so breathtakingly dishonest that he’ll publish entire volumes of lies, and when they’re picked apart, he’ll blame his shortage of factcheckers, quibble over irrelevant points, and then resort to accusing others of persecuting him. He basically just flings whatever shit he can at whatever target he’s going after, even when he knows it isn’t true, because he knows in some peoples’ minds some of it will stick. I’m not sure you realize how blatant he’s been with this kind of thing in the past.
Back to your comment though, here is Horowitz with pie on face.
CY,
It’s Horowitz’s magazine, so the whole “firing offense” issue is moot.
But it seems to me that FP made very specific claims about an incident that possibly never even took place. So yeah, this isn’t a case where they just googled up an image and mislabeled it. They may well have manufactured an event, and a heinous one at that
Even the modified page which has the image removed still refers to a stoning. So FP is still maintaining that they are specifically aware of a stoning in Iran. If you are at all curious about their integrity, you should be asking for details about this event.
When did this stoning take place? Where? Are there any witnesses? Is there any evidence? (perhaps, say, a photo or two?) Are there records from within Iran, or from international groups such as Amnesty International, in regard to this incident?
And you should also be drilling down on how exactly the mistake occurred in the first place:
Was this entire stoning story manufactured by the FP? Who located this photo? Who decided that this photo was a depiction of that event?
etc.
Just pretend that FP mag is an MSM outlet …
There’s not much humidity in my freezer, t4toby, so I dunno. My tumbler was professionally made for the purpose, so it’s the right thread count. Damn dood, it’s weed, not a full time job. I takes me some out of the bag, snip it into shreds with a pair of scissors, scoop a little into the pipe, have a puff or two and go do something else. I just was never one for ritual.
Oh. If it started looking like we were gonna get hit, I developed the habit of popping out the magazine, taking the top round and tossing it. Like it might not be live and get me killed. Still do that today. That’s my ritual. Reckon Remington loves me for it, eh?
Daddy he once told me son you be hard workin man
And momma she once told me son you do the best you can
But, then one day I met a man who came to me and said
Hard work good, and hard work fine but first take care of head
mikey
No, you asshole, it’s that you simply need that girl to be stoned/hanging from a crane/disembowled in order for your psychotic worldview to be validated. That the image that made you initially tumescent was actually a staged photo doesn’t mean that women aren’t treated like shit you fucking ignoramus. It means you were suckered in, yet again, by manipulative bullshit.
Of course, a better point would be to point out your type’s previous jihad against ol’ Scott Beauchamp as proof that we give out flowers and garlands in Iraq. So, to your mind, a Dutch filmmaker’s movie still was “fake but accurate”, but Beauchamp’s reporting was the greatest war crime in history because the army said it was fake, no matter how true it rings. Don’t you even see how insane that makes you?
Again, no one — NO ONE — is surprised that young women are treated terribly in the 3rd world, in fact, liberal organizations have been well aware of it for years (yes, you idiot, lefties opposed the Taliban before you even knew what it was). It’s an awful thing and I guess I should be happy that, for once, the right has decided that young women, gays, lesbians and atheists deserve protection — but somehow I don’t think you really give a shit about all that unless a Muslim does it.
Or maybe you held a vigil for Matt Sheppard back in the day to protest gay bashing. Surprise me, champ.
Good point Howie! That’s exactly what Gavin was claiming!
Just like this is clear proof that Israeli missiles were never fired on Lebanon!
In other news, an artist’s representation of Howie. Hey, just because it isn’t necessarily Howie in the picture doesn’t mean it doesn’t convey the truth.
Wait a minute. They actually do all those things.
No one’s disputing it Howie. The point was, someone didn’t fact-check his photo.
Kind of like this person:
Fake but accurate New Orleans
Although, Howie, I await your take on Dan Rather’s story about Bush being AWOL from TANG.
Oh, now will someone save me the trouble and find the “fake but accurate” picture of Baghdad that turned out to be Istanbul that was on some Republican congresscritter’s website?
Oh, that was Howard Kaloogian of the Move America Forward Foundation (another organization invited to the White House, 9/18/07).
It’s getting spooky with those White-House-visit connections.
Actually, I ought to go into that post and fix the characters that got messed up during the move to the new server. (If it still has yen and Euro signs peppering it, I’m not finished yet.)
[Update — post restored.]
Wait a minute – I thought you guys were state-certified neo-Maoist anarcho-syndicalist atheist anabaptist luddites. Oops.
I’m shedding a tear for how much “Howie” cares about teenage girls in Iran. Its..just…so…touching…
Howie (if you’re there)
I understand how upsetting the images are to you. I understand the outrage at unjust, draconian punishments for minor offenses. However, I am not sure what you propose that we, as citizens of the United States, should do about these practices in countries other than our own.
Is it enough to express outrage? and to accuse others of being less than properly outraged?
What action (if any) would you suggest ?
This should be easy. Expansion of hate crimes legislation to include sexual orientation was passed today as part of the military funding bill. Will these guys that are outraged, OUTRAGED I’m tellin ya, that Iran suppresses and murders homosexuals join us in calling for bush not to veto that bill?
Or will they be exposed as the racist war-mongers they have been up to this point?
I’d be delighted in having some diversity in the human rights defense. How would that possibly be party-dependent, right?
mikey
I hope I’m wrong, but I suspect that ‘Howie’ might see himself as the arbiter of which ‘humans’ will be afforded ‘rights’ — at least in his world.

I am curious however, in getting a “show of hands” here: How many think that what Frontpage did here was ethically a “firing offense?
I think Mr. Johnson should be forced to repay all money obtained from contributors and VC money from PajamasMedia.
And PajamasMedia should refund to the advertisers all money spent on ads placed on LGF.
(Is squeaky still part of FrumpyHouseCoatMedia or did they toss him overboard as a lead weight on a sinking project?)
What CY meant was:
“Give me something I can use to make a case against Dan Rather and paint you as hypocrites.”
It couldn’t be more obvious and I’m amazed that some people here didn’t pick up on it. CY doesn’t give a rat’s ass that conservatives lie and if he posts on it at all (he hasn’t yet) it will be a wet-noodle slap that amounts to nothing.
Perhaps the only fair thing would be for Mr. Johnson (and Mr. Owens) to resign from ‘the Internet.’
Making keef and hash isn’t a ritual, mikey, it’s producing an extra special treat.
Smoke a bit of this and tell me I’m putting too much effort into it.
It couldn’t be more obvious and I’m amazed that some people here didn’t pick up on it.
I’m not sure anyone actually thought CY was here to promulgate truth, justice and the American Way, Margalis. Of course he’d love us to give him ammo. That’s no reason to leave his comment unresnarked-upon.
To borrow a phrase.
Meh.
I’ve smoked, snorted, shot, drank and swallowed just about everything they’ve invented. And don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed them all. But maybe I’m just not a good judge of subtle differences. China white is better than brown tar. Good scotch or tequila is better than toilet water. Biker crank can be hard to get into your system, but it tends to take care of your bizness, while 90% meth dissolved in everclear is a weapon of mass destruction my nation does love to possess. Pot? Pot is pot. Sorry…
mikey
mikey
Ha-ha, they think ‘Islamofascism’ is a word.
[points and laughs]
I’m not sure anyone actually thought CY was here to promulgate truth, justice and the American Way, Margalis. Of course he’d love us to give him ammo. That’s no reason to leave his comment unresnarked-upon.
Truth be told? I’m so tired of the shouting and the hatred and the us/them bullshit while the world goes up in flames, I welcomed the rational comment by CY. At some point we’re going to have to live together.
Here’s a question. How does it do us any good to force the gap wider, and encourage nothing but hatred and violence? If we can’t figure out how to stand for dialog, where do we get off saying war is not the answer?
Comes down to just about two options. We talk it out, or we shoot it out.
I’m for talking. CY seems at least willing to apply the same values to both sides. I’m for that. Maybe he isn’t ready to wave the white flag, but theres a basis for dialog. What’s wrong with you people? And what is it you really want? Somebody’s got to reach out, or we just need to dig holes and place our mortars. This is crazy….
mikey
All of this pot talk…
You kids today at all spoiled, with your chronic and Purple Urkle and White Widow and hydroponic this and British Columbian that.
Why, in my day, a bulky ounce of genuine dark sticky Jamaican buds was thirty-five dollars, and you could buy Thai Sticks for $15. When times got tough, we smoked plain ol’ Mexican weed for $15 and ounce, and the only question we ever asked about hash was, “Afghani or Lebanese?”
That’s all we had (slaps table) and we liked it!
Now, somebody go fetch me my roach clip…
Pot is like wine, mikey, as much to be savored as intoxicated by.
And you have to recognize the difference between chronic and hash, come on.
And you have to recognize the difference between chronic and hash, come on.
Oh hell yeah. One gives you a buzz, while the other? Um, the other gives you a buzz.
Deal me another hand….
mikey
(Ha ha I posted with the wrong user name – my elaborate house of cards crumbles even further)
He used “firing offense” very purposely. He didn’t ask “what do you think about this?” or “what should the punishment be?”, he is specifically asking it in a way that allows him to tie it to Dan Rather. You’ll say it’s a “firing offense” and then he’ll write a blog post about how Dan Rather deserved to be fired for doing the same thing.
Sucker.
Come on now, I say this as someone with a great deal of respect for you. It’s obvious he’s just trolling for comments that he can use against you. Asking for a show of hands and detailed opinions on the nonsensical “firing offense” that has nothing to do with the topic at hand? Please.
Injecting conservative talking points irrelevant to the discussion at hand is a dead giveaway,
Speaking of Move America Forward, their in-house blogger has a real monarchist streak.
Sorry, that’s crazy.
Dialog doesn’t start where dialog ends.
What’s the alternative, smartypants?
You wanna start drawing up target lists?
What’s your plan for trying to solve this?
mikey
No, I was interested in the source of the image. I’ve seen it a lot. Glad to know where it came from. Didn’t curse or call anyone names or post porn images. I know I’m supposed to do that.
I dunno what to do. I feel it is similar to the cold war. You just have to keep pointing out the injustice of it. Slowly but surely the world gets better. If not ya still have to try.
I’m not looking for war with Iran. I’m hoping for better.
“the left opposed the taliban before you knew what it was”
Sorry, but I figured that they would be a problem the day they blew the buddahs. (before that even, just confirms) They had been doing all kinds of arrogant stuff for months prior. You could just kinda see it coming. No?
Islamo-fascism? Is that anything like Ameri-fascism?
What’s the alternative, smartypants?
People, people! Come on! Fight the real enemy!
Personally I prefer B Scheiffer(sp) to Rather. Rather, I’m sure, wanted it to be true, but really CBS failed him. He took the fall. As far as this image goes. I dunno I cant read minds. I doubt there is a nefarious attempt to mislead. It’s a popular image. I think I’ve used it before. Now that I know the source, I’ll be sure to keep that in mind should I get the desire to use it again.
I’m shedding a tear for how much “Howie” cares about teenage girls in Iran. Its..just…so…touching…
it’s touching alright. We all know America walks the high road when it comes to girls and women.
wait, my wrong! “Support the troops!”
(Danged if I can find it right now, but I distinctly recall a recent article in the NYTimes about American female soldiers becoming dehydrated and developing bladder problems because they are terrified to get up use the latrines to pee and grab a glass of water at night. They fear being raped by fellow soldiers. If anyone knows what I’m talking about and has the link, I’d be grateful).
It’s worse than just bladder infections, Lesley.
They’re dying.
Well, Innocent Bystander, in the case of David Horowitz, he was one of those godless commies. It gives him some sort of strange credibility that he’s “seen the other side”.
The stalinist mindset remains constant, but at some point the polarity suddenly flips. Happens to a lot of fanatics. The ideological difference is great but the ethical difference is negligible.
Lesley: There’s this 3/7/07 article by Helen Benedict, but it’s from Salon and not the New York Times.
“What’s your plan for trying to solve this?”
Engaging people who are clearly trying to bait and trap you isn’t a dialogue and isn’t solving anything.
I have no problem speaking with people of opposite beliefs if they speak in good faith. CY does not.
Thanks J &J.
No. You’re right. I get it now.
Trust NO ONE.
Talk to NO ONE.
They’re all trying to get the better of the negotiations. So what ya do, see, is you take the VERY first thing they say as a reason to not engage them at all.
Then you escalate the argument. And at some point somebody does something stupid.
Whatever. Kill ’em all. God’ll know his own.*
*That’s the abagenisis crusade or something like that. Jillian told me about it. It was a crusade where christians slaughtered christians. If you can’t even see the point, take the lives.
Whatever….
mikey
Jillian’s right. A lady in line to be a pilot on Marine 1 was shot down over Iraq.
Of course, that’s terrible if women are abuse or disrespected while in Iraq. But if and when that happens we need to prosecute those who do it. I imagine women would rather have the right to serve and take a little risk than be treated as unable to serve because of what might happen. Hell she might not be raped and might end up flying the president or the next president around.
In Iran the woman who is raped gets prosecuted. Her testimony means nothing. She needs three men to testify it was indeed a rape. No DNA evidence no nothing will help. She is tried before a religious panel of men. Not a jury of her peers.
Lesly’s attempt to equate the rights of western women with those suffering under Sharia law sucks air.
It doesn’t matter if CY is in good faith or not, he’s gonna have to quote “Pinko Punko” either way, it is not like it is gonna give him leverage anywhere.
Most likely, he’ll try to arrange some sort of hypocrisy argument about some total choad like CBS or whomever that supposedly faked something else or blah blah. What I will say is this: this is 100% up Horowitz’s alley (see how he edited Berube in all their various interactions) and this is 100% up Chazmo’s alley who redirects his mom if she asks him nicely to wear pants around the house.
There’s an “argumentum ad Punko” fallacy? Who knew?
Howie
By all means, keep pointing your finger at the (fill-in-the blank). But. I would appreciate it if you would begin to recognize that your fellow citizens may not agree with you about the tax-rates and how those taxes should be spent, but most of us do share your horror at (forgive the cliche) “man’s inhumanity to man.”
Lesly’s, do your own google searches from now on. Heck even I can work google

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D0DE1DA133CF935A15751C0A9629C8B63
Lesley doesn’t have to do her own Google searches. We’re all a bunch of evil, atheistic, collectivist Muslamonazi Communists around here – we share everything. Apparently, even hash recipes. And spouses. Or whatever.
Howie,
If you can ‘Google,’ you can think. Are you sure you want to go with the thought that being raped by your fellow soldiers is assuming “a little risk'”? Doesn’t that strike you as something to be ‘outraged’ about ?
Ask yourself this: what if it were male soldiers at risk of being raped ?
Menu Assisted Resurce Control
Who was I pointing a finger at besides the religious rulers or Iran?
rrrrrr! Sorry try again.
Yeah I know. My state has Democratic control of the Governor, House and Senate.
Taxes as high as ever been. Highest gas price in the nation. Groceries are taxed. Governor wanted to tax every business out foofhe state for his 12 billion universal healthcare. He already spends 6 bil for health care for illegal aliens. He got zero votes. zero. Daley saved us from that one. State in debt while all states next door have surplus.
Failed to pass utility regulation bill. My parents bill doubled but my bill on the co-op went up .0079 percent per kwhr. 100% vs .0079 percent
I could go on.
Democrats are for the little guy? Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it.
I said I was against rape you retard.
Night all
A hasty retreat, Howie? The only rational decision you’ve made this year, I’m willing to bet.
Howie said,September 28, 2007 at 4:55
Jillian’s right. A lady in line to be a pilot on Marine 1 was shot down over Iraq.
If you’re responding to Jillian’s response to me re the article on women in the military, see the Salon article she links to. It’s not about being shot down, it’s the fear of being sexually assaulted by their male counterparts.
I don’t get you. CY is not some random newbie poster here that may be conservative but also a basically honest, decent person. CY is CY with all the history that comes with that. It has nothing to do with NO ONE it has to do specifically with CY.
He participates in a site that pretends to a comprehensive media watchdog but amazingly has yet to discover a single error in all of published and recorded media that would impugn conservatives. (From my inspection, maybe they have one or two hidden in there someplace but probably not) It’s one thing to say that CY enjoys exposing liberal errors and Sadly, No! enjoys exposing conservative ones, that is their perogatives, but S,N does not put on the airs of a comprehensive source and misrepresent itself as an impartial crusader for truth on all fronts.
What CY does is fundamentally dishonest and shameless. Why would you trust him?
[Howie]
I imagine women would rather have the right to serve and take a little risk than be treated as unable to serve because of what might happen.
A “little risk” …right.
We’ve come a long way, baby.
But, Lesley, let’s remember that Howie did go way out on a limb there when he told us he was “against rape.”
So, what do you think, mikey? Are you up for trying to have a bit of dialogue with someone like Howie? Or would the result be too predictable?
Men in the army can’t even take the risk of a gay man seeing their penis; they need special laws to prevent that from happening lest their poor feelings get hurt or something…
whoa, and this… In Iran the woman who is raped gets prosecuted. Her testimony means nothing. She needs three men to testify it was indeed a rape. No DNA evidence no nothing will help. She is tried before a religious panel of men. Not a jury of her peers.
This is true, but you think victims of sexual abuse in North America necessarily get justice, you’re out of touch with reality.
So many words spilled, when it is all so clear. Bad people must be bombed.
And who gets to decide who the bad ones are? I do! I’ve got the secret info down here in mah bunker, so you all can just go fuck yourselves.
The fact is, Dick Cheney is correct. What are you going to do about it? We here in the heartland have things under control and have the spirit of American inside us. You coastal eleitsists have nothing but contempt for tradtional values, with your promition of gay and lesbian and Islam over the godly. You are pathetic.
I call fake Gary! He’s been using the word “heartland” way too much lately. He needs to be taken oin and interrogated.
Lesly’s attempt to equate the rights of western women with those suffering under Sharia law sucks air.
um, I never did this. I merely pointed out that as long as women and girls are being sexually assaulted and tortured (and in at least one case – there are probably others – murdered to cover up the crime) by US troops as well as civilians over here, we can’t claim that our society is morally superior. I suppose one could argue that a brutal rape is less painful than a stoning, but you know…
Another “fake but true” moment brought to you by Crazy Davey Horowitz.
“one could argue that a brutal rape is less painful than a stoning…”
Killed my buzz. Damn fucking reality…
I’m fairly certain the origin of term “islamo-fascism” belongs to the Spartacus League back from when they were holding up banners praising the glorious red army in Afghanistan and denouncing the Cliffites for their refusal to see the clear line drawn between the future of socialism and backwardness and religious obscurantism.
I think Horowitz left his tendency too soon to have brought the term over, maybe Hitchen’s was the ideological conveyer.
“In Iran the woman who is raped gets prosecuted. Her testimony means nothing. She needs three men to testify it was indeed a rape. No DNA evidence no nothing will help. She is tried before a religious panel of men. Not a jury of her peers.
Lesly’s attempt to equate the rights of western women with those suffering under Sharia law sucks air.”
Yeah, we’re all very familiar with Sharia law and how horrible it is. Where we differ is in the solution. You guys seem to think bombing them back to the stone age, making glass parking lots, etc will fix everything. You don’t get that our actions in the ME have empowered the fundie radicals and marginalized the moderates. You never learned the lessons of Viet Nam. As long as we were in Nam, Mao, et al, were empowered to use our presence to rally their people against us and validate their domestic policies. After we got out, those justifications crumbled and the totalitarianism of Mao’s regime quickly came to end, as the region caught that good old capitalist religion. Our unwanted presence in Iraq is empowering the radical clerics/ayatollahs and muting the pro-Western majority populations. Still, you guys want to continue this stupid war and even expand it, destroying the secular, moderate, social class and assuring a vacuum that will be filled by the radical religious reactionary leadership.
That’s why we really don’t believe your premise of concern about Sharia law. You guys are helping to enable and spread it by supporting our illegal and immoral occupation of Iraq. But you and CY will never get that sought after invite to the White House if you face up to that reality……..
You guys seem to think bombing them back to the stone age, making glass parking lots, etc will fix everything.
Excuse me. Where the fuck did you get the idea that people on this site wanted to bomb people in Iran, or, in fact ANYWHERE?????
You never learned the lessons of Viet Nam.
The fact that you even have the fucking balls to say this on a site where mikey posts speaks volumes. You are either fucking ignorant as DIRT or else you are the most clueless asshole the world has known.
You guys are helping to enable and spread it [Sharia law] by supporting our illegal and immoral occupation of Iraq.
I can only say, with all charity – are you hopelessly mistaken? Lost your way? Where the fuck did you get the idea that the people here support the occupation of Iraq? Or do you have some peculiar interesting, stenagely formatted theory that makes you think Black = White????
The poor innocent bystanders.
g, i’m pretty sure innocent bystander’s response was directed at visiting wingnut “Howie”, not at sadlynosians.
I don’t trust CY. I’ll just play that guy on TV. If he wants to make himself look like a chump, I’ll just read d about it at LGM or Gavmo here. Either way it is a win win. I play his game, he tries his fool’s mate gambit, I’m not even playing chess. I win.
Wait a minute – I thought you guys were state-certified neo-Maoist anarcho-syndicalist atheist anabaptist luddites. Oops.
I thought we were an autonomous collective.
Somebody’s got to reach out, or we just need to dig holes and place our mortars.
Say, is this hole deep enough? Oh, forget it; if you have to ask, the answer’s no.
But I loved g’s response anyway.
There are countries in the Middle East applying even stricter interpretation of Sharia law than is applied in Iran. Google it, Howie: women in Saudi Arabia; gays in Egypt.
But these are America’s friends, so there’s no talk of bombing them.
Don’t forget Pakistan, which is also a military dictatorship that has nukes!
Nobody ever notices me.
This whole post is fake. Cal Thomas said that no right wing nut jobs are allowed to speak at Universities in the U.S. Horowitz just made all this shit up.
“Hell she might not be raped”
I’d like to put that on a bumper sticker.
Priceless. Thanks so much Gavin. The posts on this one just write themselves…
Zombie Jesus: you could at least call your mother on her birthday!
Can’t find that clip on the Internet, but will take your word for it. Good Catch.
Of course, it would have been even better if you had also pointed to http://www.apostatesofislam.com/media/stoning.htm
Unless, of course, you were just interested in slamming Johnson rather than condemning stoning.
That is what I love about Liberals. The cornerstone of their path to political power is gullibility. “You can fool some of the people most of the time, and most of the people some of the time. And by God, that is a majority!!!”
slamming Johnson rather than condemning stoning
Dammit! I was hoping no one would notice that I haven’t loudly condemned stoning! I haf ben cawt wif mah seekret deesires 4 stning!
I guess the picture of dozens of women dressed in hijabs, on their knees, in a stadium in Afghanistan, with a man walking behind them with an AK47 shooting each one in the head was just too troubling.
Or the pictures over on the zombietime website with the blown up and beheaded bodies in Thailand which is currently suffering from an assault from the Muslim extermeists might have ruined a few lunches.
Unlike Dan Rather’s memo, the threat is real and there is plenty of documented examples, which unfortunately are too grostesque to put on the front page.
Be glad they went with this picture because your fragile liberal pysches couldn’t handle the real thing.
Just-a-grunt is down with my “bomb the bad people” campaign.
Although, let me see … Thailand … any oil reserves there? Hmmm, doesn’t appear to be. Sorry, won’t be bombing there. Those people are bad, but they are not Bad, and let us never speak of them again.
Mark,
Conservative concern for human rights is touching, and it is encouraging to see your concern after all these centuries of heartless conservative cruelty.
We’re all against stonings. We’re against stonings and lynchings and honor killings, and slavery … can you imagine? Both abroad and at home. Hell, we liberals are even against discrimination against gays, women, and minorities! Anywhere in the world. Can you say the same?
We’re also against people making shit up. We’re talking about how Horowitz’s FP is basically just pulling bogus facts out of thin air. Isn’t that enough of an issue for you?
If Horowitz, or you, really want to get into it, rather than just pretend concern for human rights abuses, groups like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have been documenting this kind of thing across the globe for years.
You guys just want to engineer another war. Your concern for the human rights of the Iranian people will end as soon as it’s served its purpose.
Hmmm… Jillian’s petition has gone largely ignored by our conservative visitors. How shocking. Perhaps Just_A_Grunt would care to demonstrate his sincerity by adding his pseudonym?
Marita, Hmm, only a single signature, and I think that’s actually one of our guys. A more cynical zsa might think that this concern for human rights is only a passing phase. Of course, conservatives are men of honor and consistency … it would be wrong of me to point out that they are often, in fact, blatant hypocrites and creatures of opportunity.
Once they get their additional war (it’s like crack … or pringles … always gotta have one more) we won’t hear anything more about abuses. Until it’s time to gin up support for the next war. Then we’ll be talking about how badly Syria treats its dissidents, women, homosexuals, etc.
Just_a_grunt, when was the last time you called someone a “bleeding-heart”? And here your heart bleeds for the poor and oppressed. Welcome.
Once they get their additional war (it’s like crack … or pringles … always gotta have one more) we won’t hear anything more about abuses
Are you sure that’s true? I thought we’d be hearing more about how much better off they are getting bombed than they were before. Y’know, out of the frying pan, into the fire.
[…] She has gotten her information from Sadly, No. […]
Dear SadlyNo, photo funnies is my favorite! More!
To his credit, Confederate Yankee put up a fairly reasonable post on the subject.
Fuck you. That’s not the real thing. Those are just dirty pictures you look at to stimulate a rush of anger so you can feel justified and good for demanding more war. Like you give a shit about any of these people.
I thought we’d be hearing more about how much better off they are getting bombed than they were before.
The whole thing makes me feel I’d be better off getting bombed.
I just have to plan the event carefully because of Utah’s weird liquor laws.
I take it that none of the people offended by the idea of stoning women ever use the bible to support their positions on things like homosexuality or abortion? Because unlike those things the bible strong comes out in favour of stoning.
Be glad they went with this picture because your fragile liberal pysches couldn’t handle the real thing.
what do the style books or professional ethics codes say on using actual pictures of real people suffering atrocities? inquiring minds want to know. Yes, people use pictures of real starving children to publicize aid efforts. But what’s the general ethical and aesthetic professional practice regarding photos of people in the actual moment of dying, or their corpses thereafter?
I’m not being snarky, I actually want to know.
Interestingly, this comes up after I had a peculiar experience. I attended a meeting at work where a motivational speaker talked about performing under stress, and he was a former fighter pilot. The idea was that fighter pilots have to perform at their peak all the time, because the consequences are critical. It was a little hard to fully embrace the parallel that making a mistake on a budget spreadsheet is as critical as screwing up a flight formation in the Blue Angels, but OK, I can dig it. And many attendees were employees with life-and-death responsibilities, like first responders and health workers.
But this guy wasn’t just talking about tweaking your rudder too far left while putting on a show for the Seafair Festival, he was, it turned out, talking about being a fighter pilot in actual combat in actual war (he didn’t say what war), and his stories included being in a dogfight with an enemy that he shot down.
And the video he showed was actual video taken from the little camera in the cockpit.
So – he showed this video, and at the climax of the dogfight story, we all got to see this little jet plane in the sky blow up.
And the first thought that popped into my mind was – Hey. Somebody died there.
We’re all used to seeing movie footage of airplanes blowing up; footage attempting to be realistic and footage that veers into fantasy. But this was a real video of a real plane with a real pilot being blown to smithereens.
And I thought – how weird is that, to sit here in some “rah rah – do your job better” meeting, and realize I’m watching someone die on the screen?
I started wondering how often we really see this kind of this. I mean – yeah the obvious one is the 2nd plane going into the WTC; hundreds of people died in that instance and there it is on screen. And the Challenger blowing up – they replay that footage of the streak of climbing vapor and the pop and burst and squiggle and it’s the moment of their deaths.
But other than that, I don’t think there are many times that the news media, or entertainment, or advertisers – show us the actual moment of death, however remote it might be.
Am I wrong about this?
Am I weird to have been a little squicked out by Mr. Motivator?
Am I weird to have been a little squicked out by Mr. Motivator?
Perhaps your next motivational speaker will have an audiotape of the lamentations of his enemies’ women.
Hasty retreat? No unlike most of you I have a real job which requires me to you know, sleep.
Sorry my point is that women in the armed forces and in western societys in general have recourse when raped. They can and do report these things. If there is evidence of rape the rapist is prosecuted and imprisoned hopefully.
This can not make her whole so to speak, But when a woman in Iran reports a rape she sis often time arrested and prosecuted for adultry. The maximum penalty for her being death. the penalty for him being less (normally)
Her Rapists testimony is taken over her own unless she can come up with three other men( and it must me men not women.) to testify for her to override the testimony of the perpetrator.
So in my book we have a much superior system. How many of you if , god forbid, were raped would prefer the Sharia system to our justice system and UCMJ?
I bet not very many.
I really thought you all would be for you know stuff like womens rights and equality. But ya’ll keep on respecting and equivocating Sharia because you are so culturally aware.
Idiots.
I did sign your petition. Might not be a bad idea for some of you to sign it too. But I bet you are so put off by the word “conservative” that you’ll not do it. You’ll put your politics above your values. I’d be silly to expect more of libtards.
Hey look, everyone! Howie showed up with a whole carload full of strawmen!
Howie, can you point me to a comment on this thread where someone claimed that Sharia law isn’t bad? Or are you just arguing against points that no one here has actually made?
Our good ally, Saudi Arabia usually be head around 200 hot young chicks a year, sometime for just thinking about it, NPR had a good video on this a few years back, also there are a lot of one handed people there, suspected thiefs. Of course this is alright because we get oil from without fighting a losing war and they are spooked because they are Sunni and Iraq and Iran are Shia. Who has been linked to Saudi Arabia for generations, or fearless war president .
But other than that, I don’t think there are many times that the news media, or entertainment, or advertisers – show us the actual moment of death, however remote it might be.
There’s the image of the South Vietnamese police chief’s execution of a Viet Cong prisoner. It was also filmed by a cameraman, but it’s the still photo that has become famous.
I would be weirded out by and pissed at Mr. Motivator for doing that.
Perhaps your next motivational speaker will have an audiotape of the lamentations of his enemies’ women.
Oh, actually, the guy didn’t linger on the point of the other pilot’s death at all; he went on to the usual stuff about being in top physical shape and teamwork and that kind of thing. But it was all within the framework of war, and seeing the plane blowing up kind of clicked a toggle switch in my brain – I just felt it was inappropriate to inspire me to perform better data entry by watching some guy get blown up.
To be fair to my employer, I think many people, including management, were a little taken aback by the presentation. I heard a lot of people say – “hmm, that wasn’t what I expected at all.”
Got a nice youtube for you.
Howie likes hangin’ photos? Here you go then. Don’t get yourself too worked up flippin’ through ’em.
Howie,
Are you only outraged by human rights violations in Iran, or are you equally concerned with similar violations around the globe?
Seems to me you’re cherry-picking. India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, numerous parts of Africa … it’s a pretty long list when you start looking into human rights abuses. Most of the civilized world would include Gitmo and CIA black sites in there as well. How about you? Any objection to your country torturing people in secret overseas sites with no accountability?
So if you’re going to argue that government by Islamic fundamentalists is bad, we all agree. Absolutely. Are we going to war with them because their dissidents get jailed or killed? You know better.
Where were you when Pinochet was torturing and killing thousands for the simple crime of disagreement? Where were our brave, noble conservatives then? Oh yeah, they were backing Pinochet.
It’s very entertaining to see you posture as a champion of human rights, but I suggest you walk the walk.
Oh, actually, the guy didn’t linger on the point of the other pilot’s death at all; he went on to the usual stuff about being in top physical shape and teamwork and that kind of thing.
Yeah, you were pretty clear and I don’t mean to imply otherwise. Creepy nonetheless, like Schwarzkopf’s “luckiest guy in Iraq” video from the first gulf war in which a truck drives through cross-hairs before a bridge gets blown up. Har har!

My comments were directed to Howie, the guest lecturer on RW relative moral values.
Oh, that’s different. Those weren’t perpetrated by bad other people, who are murderers and bad and hateful, like Irano-Nazis.
Say, this is some kind of trick. Americans hanged those people. What, you hate Americans?
ARE YOU SAYING AMERICA IS BAD?!?!?!?!
The fact that our system is superior to Sharia law regarding women’s rights doesn’t mean that we get to stop there. If you are confronted with a Bad Thing and a Worse Thing, it doesn’t mean that the Bad Thing is suddenly OK.
The point being that the general conservative outcry over the horrible atrocities suffered by the noble Iranian people rings false if, when confronted with other* similar problems, the reaction is, at best, a shrug of indifference.
*Note that I am not equating the experience of women in the US military and that of a rape victim under Sharia law. They are different points on a continuum of misogyny. Note also that, as has been mentioned, our good buddies the Saudis also have Sharia law; while we rightly criticize Iran for killing rape victims and gays, let’s not leave out their neighbors who do the same thing.

Howie, does your job put in close proximity to a dictionary by any chance?
Just askin.
The stupidity here is not the selective use of examples of atrocities to demonize a particular population. Hell, that’s as old as warfare. The stupidity is not the diagnosis, it is the prescription. One way to fight cancer might be to kill the patient – that would ensure the cancer would not spread and the patient will not die from the cancer. But of course, that’s stupid. If a population commits atrocities against it’s people, be they stonings, beheadings, capital punishment or detention without due process, you work to change the policies. You do NOT go to war against them. Because, obviously, (and this is the stupidity) you will kill many times more people and inflict exponentially more suffering by doing so.
The hypocrisy, on the other hand, is this ridiculous pretend outrage on the right against the abuse of women and gays. Hell, that’s been in their playbook for hundreds of years…

You would have to be able to tell the difference between reality and the images in your own mind to engage in fact checking. Many on the right believe any idea that pops into their mind is reality.

Is this one fake too? It is aledged to be 5 gays being hung right before Irans presidents visit. I could be a fake though.

Hey, couchgnome your alleged sympathy for these people would be a little more believable if you and your fellow scumbag wingnuts weren’t lobbying out of the other side of your mouth to fucking nuke them.

….fixed.
Thank god the myth has been exposed, maybe now we can stop all those bogus Refugees from the Middle East that flee islamic Nation
and lie to Immigration about torture and violence against females.
We need to embrace Shariah law and replace our Charter Of Rights with a caliphate run by Muslim clerics preaching Tolerance and Pluralism from the Mosque.
What a shame that My Pet Jawa is blocked at work because of “Racist content”…
maybe now we can stop all those bogus Refugees from the Middle East
Roger, my man, just out of curiosity: how many refugees who escaped the shining beacon of democracy that is Iraq have you housed?
tb:
It isn’t about the lack of sympathy on the Conservative side. It’s about the pathetic effort by the “Progesssives” to discredit anything that shows the true nature of Islamofascism as these films do.
Also the lefts hypocrisy. The fact that ROTC is banned from CU campus due to their adhenerence to “Dont ask dont tell” and then seeing the Iranian President being given a Red Carpet and standing ovation is incredible. Wathging Americans enemies embrace the US Democratic parties talking points is fun. Watching them stumble under scrutiny while rubbing elbows with the leftiest elite…priceless
Right, if we don’t believe the picture of the fictional scene from a movie is actually a real exectution then we must be in favor of imposing Islamic law on the western nations. That makes a whole lot of sense. Did you know you’re out of your FUCKING MIND?
“maybe now we can stop all those bogus Refugees from the Middle East that flee islamic Nation”
Or, better yet, lets stop the occupation of an Islamic Nation that creates the conditions for fleeing refugees in the 1st place. Hard to believe this solution escapes the RW braintrust.
Hey, couchie!
The difference is that whether or not we like a leader’s politics, the classy thing to do is to show them respect (see Kruschev).
The ROTC works for the people of the United States. We can actively oppose what they are doing because THEY WORK FOR US!!!1!
Once upon a time, Leaders of Other Countries were dealt with by using Diplomacy, not hoots, grunts, and hollers.
But that’s what you get when you hire a simian for a President.
Oh, that’s already figured out: When the casualty estimates came in from the nuking, they’d just ‘debunk’ them.
“The Lancet says 250,000 Iranians died from the initial blasts alone? Why, have you ever seen such blatant liberal propaganda?!”
Right- the fact that you people don’t actually give a shit about anyone is well-documented. See conservative arguments against going into Somalia, Kosovo, and Bosnia.
Right, because liberals are such natural allies with extreme right-wing Islam. Give me a break.
BTW, Mr. Champion Of Injustice, where were you when our pal the Shah was doing this kind of thing and worse? Or Saddam in the ’80’s? Or when we were arming the proto-Taliban nutjobs in Afganistan? Wait, I’ll tell you where you were- you were sitting on your fat ass waiting for someone to spoonfeed your object of wingnut outrage of the week, just like you are now.
Nice ball of wingnut mush there. Next.
Oh, and the countless gallons of spilled ink/semen over the idea of carpet bombing/nerve gassing/nuking the entire Islamic world from the face of the planet.
Michael Medved is considered to be a scholar? Melanie Morgan?!
Wow.
And I ask again, although putting it slightly differently, about the practice of using photos of people at the moment of their deaths.
Using a staged factional photo from a film and passing it off as an actual event is stupid, lazy, exploitative, and unethical.
But, little couchgnome, what do you propose instead? Do you propose taking an actual photo of a person in their dying agony – and use those images to publicize an event? What dignity does that serve the human being who died that way? The organizers of these events claim that their publicity serves to call attention to the human rights abuse being committed, but it really appears to me that the main goal of such events is to amp up the will to go to war with these regimes, rather than to save the victims.
However, even if we give them the benefit of the doubt – say, they ARE interested in the rights of oppressed women and gays in these countries – what does it say about their true feelings about these victims if they are willing to display their corpses in their dying agony as promotional material?
Some of these folks are the same ones who froth in outrage at the use of a soldiers’ posed portrait, or even a written name by demonstrators who oppose the war. They agree with George Bush’s suppression of the images of the coffins of dead troops, and they excoriate network news shows for reciting the names of the dead.
Yet they – even if one assigns a charitable motive to it (rather than the lust for corpse-pr0n that I actually think it is) – the fact that they are willing to violate the privacy of the victims by publicizing their photos speaks volumes about these people.
Here in this country, after the initial horror of 9/11, the media chose to suppress photos of people jumping from the Towers. I agree with that self-censorship – it’s about the victims’ dignity, and the families’ pain, and privacy.
Would FrontPage and couchgnome be so eager to show these photos? They are, of course, victims of the “evil Islamofascists” – why not splash their dying agony all over your promo materials?
Yes, he did, and I gave him credit for that on his own site. I still object to his participation in the Media Myth Busters website but I’m big enough to admit that in making that post he showed honesty and good faith beyond most people liberal or conservative.
According to KO, Worst Person on today’s show, the picture is from a 1994 movie made in Holland ‘The Steyn (sp), and the girl depicted is a 14 year old actress – she is fine, has made 3 more movies since then
Are these repugs scumbags or what?

This is exactly right.
I’m picturing a cartoon of one of the feminist-hating homophobic fundie rightards crooning support for the about-to-be-stoned woman just before they drop the “bringing democracy” bomb on her neighbourhood.
I have never seen it put so succinctly, It is right on.
We complained about Saddam’s mass graves, so what do we do, create more of them.
For a moment there, I thought the list of persons were islamofacists we were supposed to be aware of.
Actually, I tried desperately to find the source of this photo for quite some time. I was wary of who to trust, seeing as my Farsi is not exactly fluent.
Still, the photos of executions and the campaigns I work on these days are dutifully translated, and at least many are being saved from the gallows by groups such as stopchildexecutions.org and I also know at least more people from Iran who can hunt down these sources accurately.
I say method acting has gone too far!!!
To all those who suffer from cognitive dissonance.
A fictitious portrayal of an actual method of execution does not mean such a method does not exist, and is not used.
Here is another movie which uses accurate dramatizations of Islamic justice:

If you still don’t believe stoning occurs in the Islamic world, perhaps a video of real stoning is what you need to watch:

We’ll wait right here until you get back.

If you still don’t believe stoning occurs in the Islamic world,
When has anyone said that?
What do you mean by “That’s not the real thing.” Are you saying the Thai photos are fakes?
If you do not believe they are fakes, do you believe what is depicted is acceptable behavior, or something which must or should be tolerated? If you detest it, do you simply believe it is something we should take no action against, or just not action of a military nature?
As for the comments regarding Somalia, Kosovo, and Bosnia, I fail to understand where you stand on those military actions.
I am at a loss to your anger. I think it is unhealthy. It is one thing to oppose the current administration’s policies, it is quite another to let your anger turn to rage, and to let that rage cause denial of reality.
Marita, then we all agree on the following:
The depiction from the movie is accurate.
The use of the dramatization is a fair deceptions of a method of execution promoted by Islamic fundamentalists (the same a drawing or painting would be fair), as long as the photo is not inaccurately suggested it is an actual picture of a stoning.
Radical Islam promotes concepts many in the West abhor.
It falls completely within free speech and academic freedom to protest these behaviors, and use visuals to make a point.
Confederate Yankee is entirely accurate in his summary of the photo.
All that happened here was FrontPage miscredited a picture. This is not some conspiracy. There use of the picture is otherwise accurate.
On this, you and I are in complete agreement.
I’m glad we solved that.
Which begs the question, why on Earth is this a “scandal”?
Ummm… the quote you came up with was a commenter responding to someone saying he couldn’t stomach a given picture. A picture is not, in fact, the same experience as actually being there. And in any case, tb (who isn’t me, so your choice to use the word “you” is a bit strange) seems to be a bit annoyed at the subset of right wingers who will spout off about human rights abuses only until it allows fighting to start. Y’know, the sort of warfare that makes the lives of the people (who they have previously feigned concern for) exponentially worse.
If you do not believe they are fakes, do you believe what is depicted is acceptable behavior, or something which must or should be tolerated?
The picture Horowitz was using was fake. The rest of the question is stupid bullshit. You don’t have any evidence that anyone here thinks stoning women is acceptable; you’re just building up a straw man (and a weak one at that).
I think you’ll find what people here want is a solution to the problem that doesn’t actually just make things worse. Y’know, like bombing the hell out of the country.
All that happened here was FrontPage miscredited a picture. This is not some conspiracy. There use of the picture is otherwise accurate.
Umm… I wouldn’t be too bold in stating what we agree on. The photo is fake. It was misrepresented as being real. That’s a far cry from using a drawing (which is obviously not real) to illustrate your point. This is not the first time Horowitz has been blatantly dishonest. I suspect most of the others who used the photo probably believed in its authenticity, but I’m not buying Horowitz’s claims. You’ll note in a post currently at the top of S,N! that yesterday Horowitz put up a blog post claiming the photo’s authenticity, but that post has since disappeared. Horowitz is a flat out liar.
So why is this a scandal? Well, if you’ve been following along, several right wing sites have spent a lot of time trying to discredit unfavorable reports coming out of the middle east by analyzing pictures to look for inauthenticity. For example: added smoke was found in a picture of Lebanon being bombed. That is evidence of bad faith on the part of the photographer, but does it mean Lebanon wasn’t bombed?
So in any case, this is (why do people keep missing this?) a snark blog. They frequently make fun of the sites who spend all their time doing that, and now that a number of prominent right wing sites got caught using a fake picture, they’re pouncing on them to mock them.
Several months ago, Michelle Malkin and company analyzed the shit out of a series of photographs of a dead little girl. They wanted to prove that she had been unnecessarily carried around so that photographers could capture the dramatic scene, even after the body had already been transported to an ambulance.
They never once denied that this little girl had died in the manner reported, but they seemed to think that demonstrating that any posturing had taken place completely diffused any implication that the death of a child might have had.
Now we mention that their hate-week banner is a photo of professional actors engaged in 100% dramatization and they pretend not to see our point.
[…] Foto Funnies Pt. II [A press release from David Horowitz’s FrontPageMag] reads, “The photo accompanying this article, which shows a teenage girl buried before being stoned to death for alleged sexual offenses, will serve as the poster for the protest Week. The stoning took place in Iran.” This photo turns up all over the right-wing media, but the ’stoning’ actually takes place in a 1994 Dutch indie film called De Steen, directed by Mahnaz Tamizi. The ‘teenage girl’ is actress Smadar Monsinos. The right-wing crazies are trying their best to demonize all Muslims in their attempt to justify an attack on Iran. […]
No, they’re photographs. The real thing smells a lot worse and ruins your whole day to be around. “Couchgnome” or whatever the fuck he called himself said something about having the “courage” to look at the “real thing”. I say it doesn’t take any courage at all to sit on your fat ass looking at pictures of other people’s deaths.
What are you suggesting, that we bomb Thailand?
I was in favor of them. To a man the wingnuts of the world could’ve given a shit about those people being slaughtered. I heard what you people were saying then. I specifically remember Rush going on his radio show and mocking the people supporting intervention, repeating “but people are dying!” in a weepy voice, to the delight of his listeners.
I don’t need you to worry about my anger, I’m a very happy person. I just have no tolerance for little dirtbag wingnuts who look at pictures of other people’s dead bodies to fuel their own appetite for more killing.
Islamofascism is like when one of the wingers says, “All you extremists who follow Islam,” and then somebody says, “I’m Islamic, and I’m not an extremist!” and then the first guy says, “Oh, present company excepted, of course!”
Islamofascist means, “I categorically smear everybody who believes in this so-called religion of peace except whoever I actually have to face.”

The use of the dramatization is a fair deceptions of a method of execution
He said “deceptions.” Heh.
The real point of substance is does this happen in some Islamic countries? . The answer is yes.The next question is where is the authority for this act?.
Here we look at sharia law and the example of Mohammad, that most excellent Muslim.
We may also ponder why stoning is not found as a punishment in the collated Quran.
We discover, if we look at the historical Islamic sources, that Omar, that faithful companion of Mohammad (and a later caliph) says there was a revealed surah about stoning (Mohammad ordered it as recorded in a number of hadiths) but it was left out of the final copy of the Quran collated by Zaid..
Omar complained about this, dear compassionate man. Not!
Facts chaps rule.
I disagree with the idea that the Qur’an was edited at all since it’s a sin to alter it anyway, and would render it moot. Still… on the issue… there is an upside to all of this crap against Muslims and extra crap made up by Muslims that don’t really go with the Qur’an or Muhammad’s character: comedy. God has made the perfect joke called humanity. We’re just waiting now for the punchline to arrive. 🙂
It’s edited, so I guess it’s not divine perfection.
