Having taught in California’s public school system for eighteen years, and having taught seventh grade history (which includes a unit on Islam) for most of that time, one would think that I would be on the front lines of the Saudi attempts to brainwash our students.

Also: somebody should tell him that just saying that something is “funded by the Saudis” is not a convincing mode of attack in this case. One needs also to see a list of bad things the Saudis are including in their curriculum before one can muster sufficient outrage.

Hate crime means direct attack on person, property, reputation and privacy directly stimulated by the hatred towards a facet of an individual’s persona. The case here does not constitute that, and I think it’s shameful that Pace Uni lessens the impact of hate crime by enlarging the envelope.

I sincerely hope Pace Uni gets a judicial wolloping for its lack of insight into the implications of this case.

It is true that Salafism is the dominant muslim sect in Saudi Arabia, but you need to think beyond the spoon-fed simplicities doled out by the press in america. There is a great deal more to the high-stakes game of middle eastern geopolitics than sectarian divisions, and unfortunately, as americans, we have to work a lot harder than the rest of the world to understand.

It’s a delicate balancing act for the Royals to hold on to power. This is a “country” that was never close to being a country before Abdul Aziz ibn Saud was able, with British backing, to defeat the other houses supported by the ottomans in an ongoing campaign that lasted seventeen years, even five years after the treaty of Jeddah.

Their hold on power is theoretically more tenuous than even musharaf or mubarak, and they have to keep the peace through very generous contributions to Sunni groups and causes, support for the Salafis and a brutal secret police that keeps disadents from amassing any real popular support. Their life is made even harder by trying to be an economic ally to the west while having to support groups that are actively acting against the west.

Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t have a ton of sympathy for them. Saudi is one of the worlds worst totalitarian police states, and if the world knew their real human rights record there would be quite an outcry. What I’m trying to point out is the game of EcoGeoPolitcs, as played out on the gulf oil fields between the US, Europe, China, Russia and the UN is not one for the faint of heart. And if you think the Saudi Royals actually give a rats ass about spreading Salafism, or any other islamic construct, instead of holding on to power and acumulating even more wealth, you are not only naive, you are thoroughly propagandized…

This thread is probably dead, but, ummm, I knew a member of the Saudi royal family. Currently 10th or so in line, I believe. Went to boarding school with him, lived across the hall from him for a year.
And guess what? He was one of the most…. human students at that place. Treated others with respect, laughed along with the racist camel jokes, never once got into crap with anyone, not even the asshole who had a barely concealed gay crush on the small and somewhat feminine token second Saudi who was there mostly for Faisal to have company in Islamic religious services.
The token second Saudi was a really good guy, despite taking all the shit the royal was immune from. But he did write a story I ended up reading about killing the guy with the crush who tortured him, then setting himself on fire, as a servant of Islam. That kinda took on a new light years later.
Sorry to ramble, but my point is the House of Saud is far from a monolithic entity, and while members of it are undeniably the real heart of Islamic terrorism, even moreso than Bin Laden, the family has a lot of discord within it. “They” are not the problem, specific people are. Conspiracy theorists are lazy little shits.
