Charles Johnson Invents The Möbius Fainting Couch
Yesterday morning, as dawn broke over the belching smokestacks of the Little Green Footballs compound:
Lefty Hateblogger: Condi is a “Pouty Brown Sugar”
Several people sent me the link to this absolutely disgusting post by “progressive blogger TBogg, who, according to Sitemeter statistics, gets about 10,000 visits a day.
Indeed, he’s like the Don Imus of the Internet. We often drop by TBogg’s place for his chummy interviews with A-list Washington personalities, punctuated by random sneers at the powerless.
It’s a cliché these days to point out that the most virulent, unrestrained racism (and antisemitism) is found almost exclusively on the left—but here’s one of the most blatant examples yet.
Mere hours later, as the sun set over the crowded freight-car yard and its piles of shoes and hijabs at Little Green Footballs:
Zombie: Racist Flyers Echo Leftist Rhetoric
Zombie has a photo report on a recent story from San Francisco about ugly racist and antisemitic literature being distributed in Berkeley by an Aryan Nation gang, and makes the connection mainstream media won’t—that the same sort of vile hate speech is easily found at leftist rallies: Racist Literature Distributed in Berkeley.
To review: The most virulent, unrestrained racism (and anti-Semitism) is found almost exclusively on the Left — as demonstrated by Aryan Nations, whose call to murder black people is irresponsibly covered by the media without any mention of random signs at peace demonstrations protesting US foreign policy vis-a-vis Israel.
Tune in tomorrow at LGF when Chazmo, on the way to his Friday afternoon anti-Muslim exterminationist get-together at Barragan’s, spots a guy marching around in a Nazi uniform carrying a sign saying ‘9-11 Was An Inside Job,’ and retaliates with an outraged cri de coeur against S.Z. and Scott for using the phrase, “a giant black dildo.”
Are you kidding me? Nazis are handing out literature in San Fransisco, ergo LEFTIES ARE TEH NAZIS!!!!! … eleven.
Wow. That’s an embarrassment to the game, LGF. Go home and try again. Jesus Christ on a triscuit.
If using Dubya’s nickname for Condi is over the top then this movie should really be setting them off
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0297037/
Funny how its not…
Oh yeah, that’s right. I should add that…
As far as I can tell describing Condi as “Brown” is what they see as racist.
But that could only be racist if they firmly believe being “BROWN” is a real horror.
Actually, I should take a wee nap before dawn comes roaring around again…
I want to say we only trust the our lord . when I told it to my friend on EbonyFriends.com and he said he had the same feeeling.
The wingnut fucktard trolls at TBogg’s site seem to be missing the fact that TBogg is making reference to “Doonesbury.” They are acting as if TBogg coined the “Brown Sugar” sobriquet himself. He’s making a pop culture reference, assbags.
One of the non-troll commenters at TBogg made a very eloquent point: of course the LGFers don’t give a shit about racism itself– they only care about scoring a cheap political point. They are all worked up over the “hypocrisy” of the left and the “unfair” media bias that tilts the playing field towards Teh Left.
The wingnut worldview is getting nearly impossible to defend, so they are resorting to cheaper and lamer rhetorical tricks and circumlocutions of logic. “Global warming is a hoax because Al Gore has a high electric bill” would be one example, and this current kerfuffle is another beautiful example of their rank desperation.
save the TBoggs!
i hope the LGFers all read the post about wolfowitz, absolutely disgusting!
george calls alberto fredo? is he going to send him fishing?
It’s obvious who the Fredo of the Bush family is: Neil. Dubya is sort of like Santino, impulsive and reckless. Jeb, like Michael, is the most cunning of the brothers, but unlike Michael will never get to lead the family.
I personally like the fact that an entire blog dedicated to All Hate All the Time has the chutzpah to accuse someone fairly mild of being a Lefty hateblogger. It’s sort of like the Grand Wizard of the Klan saying, “but the real rascists are black people” with a very straight face. We have a word for those people = psychopaths.
Someone fetch the smelling salts, the special ones in the Klein bottle.
Actually, JK47, within the Bush familia it’s Dubya himself who is seen as the Fredo.
LEFTIES ARE TEH NAZIS!!!!!
Jonah Goldberg made this very clear in his yet to be published Liberal Fascism.
If using Dubya’s nickname for Condi is over the top then this movie should really be setting them off
And then there’s D’Angelo’s “Brown Sugar” (music video here).
TBogg got caught with his pants down and his balls showing in the Klavern at a Kleagles Konvention.
You’re defending him because he’s on the same side of the political divide as you are.
TBogg attacked Rice using elements of her race and sexuality. The attack used dimunitives that are characteristic of white stereotypes about black female sexuality: “pouty Brown Sugar”. TBogg got his ass caught and he’s been running like a scalded dog ever since.
I wrote to him what I’ll write to you: Condi Rice is a Rorschach test for many white liberals. The more a lot of liberals are around her, the more their inner feelings of racial superiority and condescension towards African Americans are revealed. Their “inner Klavern”, as it were, is brought to the surface. TBogg was just dumb enough to actually print it and get caught at it, because he thought he was being edgy, funny, and snarky.
He’s a racist coward, and a punk, period. He doesn’t even have the balls to be a man and apologize for it. I will bet you fifty bucks that TBogg doesn’t have the balls to walk up to Condoleezza Rice and call her “Brown Sugar” to her face, then ask for her autograph. I’d pay the price of admission just to see the new asshole she would tear him.
He’s a racist piece of shit who compounds the offense by being self-righteous at the same time.
I guess these idiots have never listened to the Rolling Stones?
The Right’s retarded cousins are now our problem? Fuck off.
LGF and the neo-Nazis are the same crew, just with different hate-ons. The current Republican Right hate Muslims. Neo-Nazis hate Jews. Same as it ever was. Hasn’t LGF cross-posted shit from Stormfront? Or was that V-Dare? Maybe I have them confused with someone else.

Hint: We’re not as stupid as you. Hence we know your game and know that your outrage is 100% phony.
section9:
Nice concern trolling. I rate it an 8.5. Really, nicely done.
Section9 shows he’s a racist coward and a worm eaten butt munch toilet licker by treating the word brown as a pejorative. In the Section9 Klegal Klavern Koffee Klatch brown means bad. I bet that cowardly fuck nugget chimp dick chugging wankstain Section9 doesn’t have the balls to apologize for his overwhelming and unquestionable racism. You’re nailed Section9, just admit it.
Actually, I’m kinda with section9. Racist and misogynist language isn’t any more okay for TBogg than it was for Imus.
With that said, the link between TBogg saying something dumb and “Teh Left is the true home of racism!!!11!” is pretty damned hazy, particularly for a group of conservatives whose unifying doctrine is “Kill all the Muslims”.
I agree with Robert M. The comment was rather tasteless, especially since Rice didn’t have anything to do with the story.
The tie in was that Wolfowitz’s girlfriend was earning more than the Secretary of State. A position currently held by a awoman who has been nick-named “Brown Sugar” by the POTUS.
Again I ask, which is the derogatory term “Brown” or “Sugar”?
Nazis hand out literature at lefty rallies, therefore lefties are Nazis. Add to that the fact that lefties are often seen at Nazi rallies(they call it “protesting”, Chazmo calls it “maize”) and QE fuckin’ D.
I hesitate to jump in here, because I like TBogg, and think his site is generally hilarious… but here I go.
This is a meaningless question. Which is the derogatory term, “jungle” or “fever”? “Brown sugar” is a reference to a particular stereotype; in this case, it demeans Rice by saying her position is a sinecure based on sexual favors. Pretending it’s not derogatory is like pretending that calling your male friends “bitch” is okay, because, you know, none of you think that there’s anything wrong with being a woman.
I have as much contempt for Rice as the next guy, but let’s criticize her for being a chronic enabler of our warmongering fool of a President–not for being a black woman. It brings us down to the level of Limbaugh and Coulter, and gives idiots like the LGF crowd an excuse to point fingers at us.
The best thing progressives have going for us right now is that we’ve got the moral high ground. Giving it up would be not only a tactical error, but one that undercuts the very reasons we think we should have the power.
Shorter Right Wing Blogosphere:
Ha, the left is teh racist because they dissed a powerful black woman who has helped royally screw the country, whereas we on the right are not racist because we only disparage poor, powerless ni…colo…oh whatever the hell we have to call them this week!
The tie in was that Wolfowitz’s girlfriend was earning more than the Secretary of State. A position currently held by a awoman who has been nick-named “Brown Sugar by the POTUS.
Please provide evidence that establishes this. I’m interested.
I’ve heard there’s a Doonesbury connection, but having a fictional character say something and saying it yourself are two different things.
Again I ask, which is the derogatory term “Brown or “Sugar?
The derogatory term is “brown sugar”.
Rice got her job by being qualified for it? I disagree completely. Remember her stint at the NSA?
She got her job because of her relationship with Dubya. His favorite “Work out Partner.”
Owlbear, the only time “qualified” appears in this thread is in your comment. What I said was that it’s unfairly demeaning to imply that her position is a sinecure based on sleeping with the Presnit. (It’s actually a sinecure based on Bush’s longstanding policy of valuing loyalty rather than competence.)
At the risk of repeating myself, let’s criticize her by pointing out that nothing in her background even sort of suggests she’s qualified to be the nation’s chief diplomat. Let’s blare to the rooftops that as NSA she freaking ignored a memo titled “Bin Laden Determined to Strike Inside U.S.” Let’s make fun of her for being part and parcel of the administration’s effort to demean the value of education and intellectualism. Just don’t make allusions to slave rape.
Touche’
It was Condi who described W as “my husband,” after all.
On the “9/11 was an Inside Job” riff, see Kieran at Crooked Timber today (especially the link in the post).
Robert, for someone who hesitates to jump in, you have a certain unbridled enthusiasm. Slave rape? On what planet does the phrase brown sugar equal allusions to slave rape? That buzzer you just heard was the concern troll alarm going off.
I would imagine there could be various allusions in TBogg’s use of the term, not just to the Stones or slave rape. See the D’Angelo video above, for example, though I don’t think this is what he had in mind. In the context of the post, the term would seem to convey, as others have mentioned, the president’s penchant for nicknaming and Trudeau’s derision of this penchant, as well as Rice’s calling the president “her husband” and her shopping for luxury goods during Katrina. But I think if a joke requires this much explanation, survey says … X.
Heroin is sometimes referred to as brown sugar, though I don’t think it obtains in this instance.
My sense of Rice is that she’s a skilled courtier, who knows how to please W and the Family. In all the books about the last six years I’ve read, she never plays an important role. She’s always in the background, me-too-ing and mouthing the latest propaganda. Oh, and then lying to Congress, yes.
If I say “like a blister in the sun”, do you assume I’m talking about masturbation? If I say “Mandingo”, is it an allusion to white women raping black men? Somebody’s making a some mighty big rhetorical jumps (notwithstanding his hesitancy is to do so).
I’ve been posting here for months, and lurking longer, but because I’m disagreeing with the decision to defend TBogg, I’m suddenly a concern troll–and you wonder why I thought twice before posting.
My wife is Colombian; we live in Florida, where there are plenty enough old-school crackers to go around. Hopefully you can imagine the kind of encounters I’ve had with racist assholes, and how alarm bells might start going off when a blogger calls Condi Rice “Brown Sugar”, and talks about “Daddy” buying her a new pair of expensive shoes.
If you want to know what “brown sugar” means in American culture, you can listen to the Stones song, or do some research about Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings. Alternately, you can date a woman with dark skin, and encounter a drunk skinhead while walking from a movie back to your car. Your call.
I (a white guy) dated a woman from Kenya for a year. I also dated a beautiful ex-model and basketball player of color. The only grief we got was from black men and white women. And sorry, but a thirty year old Stones song doesn’t definitively proscribe the meaning of “brown sugar”, any more than the D’angelo song does. It sounds like personal prejudices are affecting *your* view.
The Right’s retarded cousins are now our problem?
Well, the wingnuts have been engaged in a long-term project to unload all their hatred and racism on “the left” for a while now. Its two main features are “Hitler was a radical leftist!” and ” Republicans ended segregation, therefore Democrats are the real racists and fucking looooooove segregation!” (Of course, both of those features are always backed up by a hearty “Blargh1!!!11eleven!1!”).
Their “inner Klavern, as it were
Seeing as how I’m a fan of “daffynitions” (such as the aformention “Hitler = radical leftist”), I’d say I’ve got more of an “inner Claven” than an inner “Klavern.” As it were.
On what planet does the phrase brown sugar equal allusions to slave rape?
See the first verse of the Stones’ “Brown Sugar.”
I’ve been posting here for months, and lurking longer, but because I’m disagreeing with the decision to defend TBogg, I’m suddenly a concern troll–and you wonder why I thought twice before posting.
One charge of concern trolling does not a consensus make. I think there are plenty here who welcome your comments.
Check out these Dean Martin lyrics. I have just proved “amore” equals allusions to italian food. QED, I think.
Just another episode of misplaced rage from the king of false outrage. If he wants to pretend he cares about this he should call out his boy W.
So, the proprietor of Little Green Footballs is complaining about hate-speech and racism.
How … incongruous.
Righteous Bubba: Bush’s nickname for Rice is Guru.
Oy…
Let me see if I’ve got this right:
Blogger>/b> tbogg makes a post that riffs on a comic strip by cartoonist Gary Trudeau that features an imagined dialogue wherein a joke is made that our current president, with his penchant for odd and often embarassing nicknames, would use a racially charged term for a woman who describes himself as “his other wife”. And this somehow makes tbogg the racist?
To quote Daffy Duck after a facefull of shotgun… “let’s run through that again…”
A cartoonist imagines the president using a racist term for his female, black employee and implies an inappropriate relation between the two based on jokes made on the record about one being a ‘wife’ to the other.
A blogger takes the joke and runs with is, drawing a parallel between Wolfowitz and his actual girlfriend who has recieved far more in raises than she should have, with the only obvious explanation beign that she is romantically tied to the president of the bank where she works.
One more time, for the slow kids:
Tbogg doesn’t think Condi is “brown sugar”, any more than Gary Trudeau thinks Ms. Rice is “brown sugar”. This is what they imagine other Republicans, including the President think of Ms. Rice! Given Mr. Bush’s history of using odd nicknames, often in questionable taste (Pooty-Poot? Turdblossom) and his peculair behavior towards other women in power, (remember his infamous “back-rub” of the German Chancellor?) it does not seem too much of a stretch to suggest that he might use an equally inappropriate and tasteless term for Ms. Rice.
Or does my imagining & suggesting that someone else (a privelledged rich frat boy from Texas) might be a racist make me a racist as well?
When Gary Trudeau puts “Brown Sugar” in Bush’s mouth, it’s satire that underlines Bush’s barely-concealed racism, his bizarrely inappropriate conduct with female peers, and his faux-paternalistic cruelty toward his subordinates.
When TBogg puts it in his own mouth, as a postscript to a story about a woman retained and vastly overpaid solely because she provided sexual favors to a powerful man, it no longer comes across as satire; instead, it’s a direct implication that she traded sex for a highly-visible position.
I’m perfectly willing to concede that it was intended as a joke, but if so, it fell embarrassingly flat. I’m not excommunicating TBogg from the lefty fold, or saying he’s worse than LGF, or anything of the sort–I just don’t think the comment was appropriate, and I’m surprised that S,N! felt like they should defend him.

I thought it was a bit much as well, but it’s overweighed by the spectacle of actual genocidal racists stomping through, aghastly accusing him of racism.
…And then using a call to murder by Aryan Nations (also actual, genocidal racists) to aghastly attack peace demonstrators.
I mean, there’s a psychological term for that.
I had something interesting to say about the comparison between Aryans and people who think that Israel unfairly influences our military decisions, but my mind was wiped clean by all this pointless arguing of semantics.
Seriously, folks, aren’t there other places to argue about this kind of thing besides a satirical comedy blog?
I think the Aryan = Leftist issues is far more important. We could argue the implications of calling someone with brown skin ‘brown’ for days. I went to an Extreme Left (Fairhaven/WWU) college in the mid-nineties, so maybe I’m a little war-weary when it comes to endless semantics arguments…
Or, perhaps, it’s an implication that she traded something else of high personal value (say, her integrity, or the courage of her convicitions, or willingness to speak truth to power, or the value of being an honest broker) and was rewarded for her loyalty with a significant promotion.
If that’s too wordy, we could just say “just because a politician doesn’t actually have sex with a lobbyst, don’t mean he’s not a whore!”
(given the strange & repeated instances of homoeroticism in this administration, had Colin Powell stayed onboard, I’m sure Tbogg’s joke would work equally well if not better)
And by the way, the underlying joke here works with Trudeau’s original bit as well: just because she isn’t literally offering sexual favors in exchange for power at the White House doesn’t mean she hasn’t sold otut her personal values to an administration that values loyalty over all else.
At the end of the day, what leaves me feeling sad is I probably have more sympathy for a woman who actually did trade sexual favors for power than I do for a person who compromises their values & ethics, selling out themselves in a much more personal way. Sex is a much more available commidity than integrity, I’m afraid.
What Gavin said. When I saw that crack, I knew tbogg was referencing the “Doonesbury” bit, which had the lizard monkeys howling with outrage, too, if you’ll remember. I also knew that those same lizard monkeys would be howling about it, too, either because they didn’t get the joke or saw a slow deer in the herd. Maybe he should have included a link to the original Doonesbury reference or something.
Robert’s right and “brown sugar” is a loaded term*, and it occurs to me that progressives should be aware of that, particularly us white folk. It’s sorta like Kerry’s joke that got ’em all a-twitter back before the elections. I’m not arguing self-censorship so’s not to offend the delicate senisbilities of fucking scum like the folks who actually celebrate(d) the anniversary of Rachel Corrie’s death like it was the Fourth of fucking July, among many other things, but one should be aware of it. If that makes any sense.
* Course, it isn’t the Stones song that comes to my mind; it’s Sam & Dave’s “Soul Sister, Brown Sugar”, which makes “brown sugar” mean something entirely different. Maybe.
A recurring problem with the left:
1) Conservative asshole with influence, audience of millions and long history of acting like an asshole gets comeuppance.
2) Another conservative asshole points a stinky “but you too” finger at one questionable comment by relatively unknown, uninfluential lefty with audience of perhaps a few thousand.
3) The left beats on the little lefty.
There comes a time when the eternal quest for unattainable purity becomes markedly counterproductive.
Besides, if you look through the various snarks of myself and nearly everyone else here through the typical MSM and/or wingnut and/or concern troll outrage lens, “one would have to conclude” that Charles Johnson is correct. Which, of course, he isn’t.
One rule of thumb about bigoted remarks: If the only people complaining are people who aren’t remotely the targets of the remark in question, and in fact are people who often traffic in very similar sentiments, then you just might be getting smoke blown up your ass.
I had no idea that the sexist remark TBogg made about SoS Rice was in reference to something else. I didn’t care. It was simply the last sexist remark I intended to read by a somewhat popular blogger, so I deleted him.
Recently reported breaking news that women don’t like to be called whores prompted men to discuss how men felt about men calling women whores, and why women haven’t gotten used to it yet.
And so it goes.
Mobius fainting couch. That is just… no words to express it. And the images it inspires…
Mr. Escher? Meet Mr. Narcoleptic.
LGF condeming racism, um yeah.
You’re defending him because he’s on the same side of the political divide as you are.
Naw, it’s because, Section9, if you got on the Clue Train, and rode down Clue Avenue, and got off at the site of the Clue Parade, to hear the great Clue Queen stand on her Clue Van, and sing her heartfelt tune of “We’ve Got UR Clues Right Here!” You wouldn’t get one.
Personally, I’m too far gone on the too-many-dead-babies side of the issue to ever have a feeling that there’s any need for Emily Post restraint when addressing Ms. Rice.
“When TBogg puts it in his own mouth, as a postscript to a story about a woman retained and vastly overpaid solely because she provided sexual favors to a powerful man, it no longer comes across as satire; instead, it’s a direct implication that she traded sex for a highly-visible position”.
well thats one way to look at it.
Here is another:
She was wolfies girlfriend and one could assume ALL the normal girlfriend favors were provided, so he got her a great job and a nice bit o’ coin to go with it.
Condi is pouty because this girlfriend makes more than she does when her husband is the POTUS, this is where you tack on the Doonsbury.
Funny, actually.
are you guys TRYING to make it ethically diffcult for those of us who are feminists to continue reading? i’m actually asking, i really want to know if you’re intending to make this a men’s-only sort of space…
“…trying to make it ethically difficult” whuzzat?! What do you want, a vow to hunt down and destroy TBogg you the hideous crime of using a phrase that is used a dozen times a day on every classic rock station in America? Do we need to swear to never ever ever use the word “whore” in any context whatsoever?
Do we have to fucking pretend that Condi Rice is not a soulless monster who feels no remorse for the hundreds of thousands she’s helped to kill, because she traded in any shred of conscience and integrity for the right to be George Dubya Bush’s servant, a position she earned not through merit but through her skill as a boot-licking toady who fills Bush’s need for female affection he gets from neither his wife nor mother?!
No promises on that.
What a cascade of bullshit.
Of course TBogg and the Lefties think that Rice is “Brown Sugar”.
One of the problems that has always alienated white liberals from the black community is a barely concealed condescension. As in “we know what is best for you, so vote for us and our politicians, and all will be well.” This is the subtext of the patron/client relationship that the Democratic Party has with the black community.
Like I wrote earlier, Rice’s presence in politics reveals an inner ugliness among many white liberals towards the black community whose revelation was entirely accidental, but was there nonetheless. TBogg thought he was being ironic and funny. In fact, he was letting out his inner Kleagle that most in the black community understand lurks in the background.
TBogg hates Rice not because of the war. That’s simply superstructure, to use a Marxian term. TBogg hates Rice because she is no longer “property” and is not a client. She rejects his political assumptions and some of his shared world views. Even without the war, the anger and rejection would be present, because once a black individual rejects even a few of the values of a white liberal, the alienation is often as personal as it is political.
What was most revelatiory here was the descent into racial and sexual stereotypes. That crossed the boundary into racism. Not that “redwards” above is anywhere close to being on “my side” in this issue, but she raises the issue that others, like Jrod above avoided: TBogg descended into a racial and sexual stereotype-the use of the heavily loaded sexual stereotype “brown sugar”. He did it deliberately and with malice aforethought, and white liberals are here on this board, rationalizing it and defending it precisely because TBogg is on their side. They would rather defend him instead of admit that he might have been both wrong and trafficking in racial and sexual stereotypes common among white people when using language directed at black women.
Jrod simply sidesteps the entire issue by demonizing Rice with fatuous hyperbole in his post, which ergo, makes it okay for TBogg to use racial and sexual stereotypes in debate. Do you see where this kind of thinking leads you people?
The blind have been leading the blind here. It’s been a catalogue of rationalizations and defensiveness since day one, which is about what I expected. Sad to say, I wasn’t disappointed. Liberals never disappoint me, since there are few standards that you people live up to. After all, you folks live in a world of situational ethics.
Great analysis, Section 9. You seem really knowledgeable about Marxism (way to turn one of the left’s pet theories on them, BTW), so I wanted to ask you a couple of quick questions. What would be the base in this case? How about the mode of production?
