Malkin’s update on the “nutroots w/guns” post clings to my use of the word “smear” in describing trying to get people fired because you don’t like their opinions that they have opinions. Or rather, characterizing them taking a few phrases critical of Catholic Church policy and circumscribing Marcotte & McEwan to the realm of bigots as a “smear”.

Matt Hamlin at the Hufpo goes on and on about rightwing smears against Edward’s blog team. How the heck is it a smear just to print what these two have written. Just shining the light on their own words. That’s what you did and what most other blogs I read were doing. That’s a funny way to smear somebody isn’t it? I can’t think of much more inspiring than a personal injury lawyer who is unable to face down his tinfoil hatted followers when they threaten him, as the first line of defense between our country and the bad guys in the world.

Pandagon, where Marcotte blogs, has the statements of Marcotte and McEwan. You can tell they are working for a political campaign now because they are apologizing just like politicians.

Rather than saying “I am sorry,” for instance, Marcotte wrote, “I am sorry if anyone was personally offended by writings meant only as criticisms of public politics.” And this from McEwan: “It has never been my intention to disparage people’s individual faith, and I’m sorry if my words were taken in that way.â€?

I’m not sure Glover’s apologies ever reached this level following his NYT blogger ethics journamalism, so I don’t know about his footing on this.

I’m not sure what to do with Edwards. Even with his weasel words at AIPAC (“I gotta keep my options open!”) and his cowardly refusal to support his own staff (“I was offended just like you people who would never deign to vote for me in the first place, honest!”), he’s still head and shoulders above anyone the republicans would run.

I’d just really like to not have to vote for the lesser evil, is all. It would be nice to be honestly excited by a candidate for a change.

I never have gotten an answer to my question, so again. Did any liberal Catholic group complain about what Marcotte wrote? Did any liberal Christian group complain? Did any prominent liberal, group or individual, complain about what Marcotte wrote? Did anyone have any specific complaints about anything McEwan wrote? Did anyone in the brouhaha think to ask what prominent liberal spokespeople thought? I notice that it is simple to buy “gift memberships” for other people. [link] I wonder what a full audit of their membership roll would reveal? Is it possible that large blocs of membership subscriptions are being purchased by only a few large donors?

Seeing as the Catholic League is a tax-exempt organisation that appears to be engaging in political activism, which is meant to be a no-no, perhaps their status as a tax-exempt organisation needs challenging?
