Es Verdad

Since the right is having such fun celebrating Augusto Pinochet’s life and legacy today, it’s a good time to remember (as The Clash once mentioned) Victor Jara (1932-1973), in the Santiago stadium.

Victor Jara – ‘Te Recuerdo, Amanda” (3:00)

From the Wiki link above:

On the morning of September 12, Jara was taken, along with thousands others, as a prisoner to the Chile Stadium (renamed the Estadio Víctor Jara in September 2003). In the hours and days that followed, many of those detained in the stadum were tortured and killed there by the military forces. Jara was repeatedly beaten and tortured, the bones in his hands were broken as were the bones of his ribs. Fellow political prisoners have testified that his captors mockingly suggested that he play guitar for them as he lay on the ground. Defiantly, he sang part of a song supporting the Popular Unity coalition. After further beatings, he was machine-gunned on September 15 and his body dumped on a road on the outskirts of Santiago, and then taken to a city morgue.

Jara’s wife, Joan, was allowed to come and retrieve his body from the site (and was able to confirm the physical abuse he had endured). After holding a funeral for her husband, Joan Jara fled the country in secret.

Before his death, Victor Jara wrote a poem about the conditions of the prisoners in the stadium, the poem was written on a paper that was hidden inside a shoe of a friend. The poem was never named, but is commonly known as Estadio Chile.

And it’s a good time for some Clash too.

But Milton Friedman is still the hot diggity neocon economic idol.

Can they not perhaps at least *pretend* to be something other than cryptofascists?

The Godfather of Uncivil!

Actually, Godfather of Shrill works better, huh.

Nice one, Gavin

I was blastin’ that Clash song most of college. As best I can recall, that is.

Thanks Gavin. Never Forget. In spite of the fear, racist hatred and ignorance we see every day from our countrymen, it’s important that we all remember there be monsters – and it’s always better to cut off their heads before they accumulate too much power…

hey, who had the greasemonkey script? i finally got it installed and i want someone to talk about pie….

Go to and search for sadlyno.

I use a mac and it’s fine, but the latest PC build for Greasemonkey appears to have a problem installing scripts sometimes. Good luck.

Great video.

I did a piece about Jara as well. It’s my understanding that they didn’t so much break the bones in his hands as they pulverized them, so they would never function again.

Pinochet, may you burn in hell, you pile of pigshit.

This one is pretty much the jam, too. (The original’s pretty fantastic, if you can find a version of it out there.)

Yep, it’s kinda fucked up. I found what you have to do is drag the script into a firefox window (after you install Greasemonkey and restart Firefox) and then you’ll be good to go..

does the greasemonkey script work within Safari?

That other thread with the dingbat and attending sockpuppet, for all the trollish fun, makes me think I may be wanting some pie….

Who’s going crazy now? Let me at them!

does the greasemonkey script work within Safari?

I’m sure there’s a way, but I don’t know it.

If you have a reasonably zippy mac Firefox with Tab Mix Plus (among other things) is oh-so-much-better for looking at the web anyway.

good onya for blogging Jara. I learned about him just last night as I was toasting the death of Pinochet.

It is my understanding that his hands were not so much broken, as they were smashed to practically jelly with rifle butts. And still he sang.

Cojones man, serious fucking cojones.

I hope Augusto has fun getting raped in his ass by Jeanne Kirkpatrick, forever, in Hell.

Seems like the evil ones always die in threes… Friedman, Kirkpatrick & now Pinochet. I was hoping that Cheney would finish the trifecta this time, but of course if he did, how would we know?

i got it working, thanks everyone. especially you, pie!
