So we met the dog. He’s a pitiful creature; can’t go upstairs anymore and his long skinny legs are all bowed and wobbly. And he has a bony growth sticking out of the top of his skull. He’s an affectionate guy, though. And he doesn’t bark!

We’re going to bring him home in 2 weeks, on a Friday when we have an empty weekend, so we can see how he does.

Our friends are moving to Boston, and in additon to the dog, we get some stereo speakers, and a foldout couch.

It wasn’t an office. It was a venue he was speaking in. And I knew enough about him to expect the content of his appearance to be provocative. I had no problem with that.

What I didn’t expect was that he would deliberately make messes backstage with the catered food prepared for him, so that minimum wage people would have to clean up after him, and so that the people who were paying for his appearance would have to pay for damages. Deliberately grinding food into rugs and upholstery is not the mark of a provocative intellect, it’s one of a selfish self-absorbed asshole.

Actually, the owner of my geriatric Rottweiler was an administrator connected to the venue. Maybe my memories are all being triggered by this.

Here’s the whole thing in a nutshell. aa is a troll. For those of you who are too n00b on the internets to know what a troll is, they’re a person who is never, ever, ever interested in serious discussion and is only ever interested in stirring shit. By speaking to them AT ALL, you only encourage them to stir shit.

S,N! is an interesting place with some of the most varied and fascinating regular readers I’ve seen. I have interesting conversations with folks here in the comments threads. Feeding the trolls is a surefire way of keeping that from happening, and it’s annoying as hell. It’s like showing up at a seminar that you’re actually interested in attending for once, only to find out that a half dozen of the other conferees have brought their six year olds with them, who promptly proceed to turn the conference hall into an Indian fort so they can play cowboys and indians. It’s fucking annoying as hell.

I don’t talk to the damn troll, ever. The only time I ever say anything about it is if I feel there’s a comments thread that might possibly be interesting if it weren’t for the damn troll flinging their verbal excrement all over the place like a poorly potty trained toddler. If y’all want to jerk off in the jokey threads we have around here aplenty with the troll, I honestly don’t care. I personally think far less of anyone who does engage with the troll, and there are a couple of commenters around here that I’ve come to realize are just plain idiots because of the way they do engage with the troll – but it’s a big planet, and there’s plenty of room for all of us, even the idiots.

I’m not going to waste time schooling anybody on what a troll is, or the basics of internet ettiquette, and I’m certainly not going to lose any sleep over what people do or don’t do on the internet, for god’s sake. I just hate to see decent, interesting conversation siderailed into endless stupidity over someone whose intent was never to engage seriously with substantive ideas in the first place.

The troll reminders I pop up with on occasion are mostly for the sake of new faces around here, who probaby don’t realize that aa is a troll, and might get suckered into trying to actually talk seriously with her. People who are still wasting their breath on her after her endless displays of classic troll behavior are beyond my ken, and also not something I’m going to lose any sleep over.

This is the only time I’ll be in this thread – the only reason I showed up at all is because my name got used at least three times, so it’s sort of an internet rule that I have to say something now. I also noted that in each of these threads, nobody was calling annie names UNTIL after she dropped one of the above flame bombs, at least until recently when her behavior had been pretty well established. I don’t think mikey is to blame at all for deciding how he feels toward annie. The one comment up above where she responds to mikey by name, he responded to one of her comments with a pretty good post, reasoned and to the point; to which she responded with that foul mouthed blast.

And one final one, just because I love the utter juvenile character of it:

If you want people to respond with debate and respect, annie dear, you’ve GOT to do better than high school taunting and name-calling.

I’ll say it again: People here are willing to debate you and argue with you, and perfectly willing to accept opposing viewpoints, if even just deciding that we will never see eye to eye. But if you want to be treated that way, you’re going to have to treat people that way also.

And I think it’s pretty easy to show, as I did, that when you first showed up, you weren’t doing so. And were pretty much treated appropriately.

No beach bonfires? And the thing about Florida is you have to drive everywhere, too, you really can’t walk anywhere. I remember when I was staying in Sarasota, doing that job in the 70’s. The company put me up in a Travellodge on the main drag down the coast — I can’t remember the route number, but you know the one. They didn’t rent me a car and IIRC, I didn’t know how to drive then anyway — I was from Manhattan — so they drove me everywhere. But it didn’t help during the time I was off the clock.

I remember there was a greasy spoon restaurant about a half a block away; and then if I walked inward for about 10 blocks I found a place that served conch chowder for lunch but was closed for dinner. I remember I once walked downt he shoulder of the road in the dark because I tried to go to a hotel a couple miles away just to eat dinner. It was freaky.

All my experiences of it have been during spring break, which is to say i think of it as avoid at all costs. i’m also on the far end of sanibel, not near the bridge, so it’s truly a journey to get to the mainland by any measure. i just make sure to bring lots of hash with me.

My kid just flew into Kennedy a couple hours ago. Actually he was staying in Tampa with my inlaws. Too bad this whole thread debacle took place — he spent the day in Sarasota with a bunch of Chinese exchange students visiting the Circus Museum – you could have joined him if we’d only known.

Do you take “The Train to the Plane?” What’s the best strategy for that? The subway takes forever to get to Manhattan. Kid is going to try to LIRR to Penn, and then subway to his home in the East village.

Flying tomorrow is smart, you avoid today’s busy travllers. I guess no work Monday? Or are you in school?

Or we have a pick and choose policy- aa not being inflammatory, she gets incorporated into polite society, but if you feel she is being imflammatory, you don’t respond. I realize for many of us, who feel so offended or insulted by her that the history will not allow this, then just ignore her. Watching people go ape on adb kind of made me a little sad. adb’s giving aa attention is not what gets her going- it is seeing everyone get crazy and fighting amongst themselves.
