It’s easy to make fun of Dinesh D’Souza, for his name, for his unfortunate resemblance to Mr Bean, for his serial adultery, for his career of mean spirited lies, for his credulous embrace of the most self righteous flavor of evangelical christianity, for his conviction for deliberately breaking campaign finance laws to back a loser, but those are all low hanging fruit. When you look at where he goes wrong (over and over and over) it’s because he thinks he’s a part of the ruling class, and not one of it’s useful idiots. He thinks he can get away with serial adultery, after all, it didn’t hurt Newt Gingrich any. But, no he got bounced from his job as the president of “The King’s College” in NYC precisely because pseudo intellectual religious buffoons are a dime a dozen, and it was easy for that institution to publicly demonstrate the morals they advocate and fire his adulterous butt. He thinks that election laws are for other people so he ignored the many ways in which rich people can circumvent campaign finance laws and got caught. He was low hanging fruit, I don’t think he even bothered to set up a PAC to launder the donations. This is a step so easy that Stephen Colbert set up one as a joke for a basic cable comedy show. And precisely because he is a useful idiot and not one of the elite, none of the right wing elite that he’s been pandering to his entire career felt the need to help him out, although given the clumsy way he committed the crime, it’s not clear that there was much a wealthy and powerful patron could have done to help him. Is he ever going to wise up? I don’t mean will he ever give up being a right wing, evangelical, pseudo intellectual provocateur, because he seems to think that’s his identity now, rather than for example, ‘convicted felon’. But will he ever stop thinking that he will be excused for flouting laws and the rules of his religion because he’s extra special?

I hesitate to use a phrase like “bigger than his britches”, because that seems mighty close to calling him uppity. It’s not his ambition that trips him up, or not completely. It’s his reliance on status and in-crowd membership to save him from his blunders. He’s continues building his career on quicksand. Nothing he’s achieved, and he has had remarkable achievements* will make the right wing expend an ounce of effort on his behalf. To horribly mix a metaphor, if the conservative gravy train is a balloon ride, he doesn’t understand that he’s not a passenger, he’s ballast. Yeah, not sure I agree. I see your point but am not sure it is applicable in this case, and if it is where does it end.
First I don’t know of any particular baggage associated with “bigger than his britches.” And while a phrase I cannot remember writing before because I am certain that there are better, it was the only thing that came to mind at the time. Uppity does carry with it some freight particularly with women and African Americans and in particular AA males as it could very well not 60 years ago have been a death sentence in the south.
It is a word I would like to get back as in “Fuck yeah you retrograde moron, I am fucking Uppity and your are gonna have to get used to it. It is afterall what the U in UNE stands for.
And as far as calling Dinesh uppity, that would never happen, as he is the antithesis of uppity. That Indians have moved fairy securely into the mainstream of America it would almost be like calling a white person uppity, given that they are already “up.”

Watched a DVD last night and the preview for this Dinesh D’souza crap was in the previews. What I found interesting is that they kept saying the previews that this is “from the producer of Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List” — like, “hey we’re LEGIT! We’re not some low-rent crackpots working out of mom and dad’s basement!”
So I went to IMDB and did some checking and found the name Gerald Molen. He is indeed a producer of the first Jurassic Park movie as well as Schindler’s List, as well as Rain Man and Minority Report. However, he’s taken a decidedly wingnut shift, producing both of D’Souza’s last two movies and the upcoming “The Abolitionists,” which looks like teanut porn.
I mention it because I find it interesting that as much as right-wingers LOVE to hate “liberal Hollywood,” they’re just desperate to use that same value set to give themselves some sort of cultural credibility. It’s rather sad.
Meanwhile, knowing every ticket purchased to a Gerald Molen film funds D’souza’s burgeoning film career, I may need to pay closer attention …
