The Bush administration today released excerpts of a leaked U.S. intelligence report that concludes the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq has fueled Islamic extremism and contributed to the spread of terrorist cells. It also finds that terrorist groups around the world are adapting to counter-terrorism strategies. […]
The report, which reflects the consensus of 16 government intelligence services, also suggests that a U.S. victory in Iraq could weaken the will of terrorist groups.
“Should jihadists leaving Iraq perceive themselves, and be perceived, to have failed, we judge fewer fighters will be inspired to carry on the fight,” the report said.
“Maybe, like, three fewer. But hey, it’s a start.”
The report argues that the spread of democracy in Muslim countries “would alleviate some of the grievances jihadists exploit” and erode their support.
But there’s a catch, right? And that catch is…?
But the Iraq conflict “has become the ’cause celebre’ for jihadists, breeding a deep resentment of US involvement in the Muslim world and cultivating supporters for the global jihadist movement,” the report said.
Nifty. So our presence in Iraq makes them hate us more. Our supposed “plan,” then, is to stay in Iraq until… when? They magically change their minds?

And unlike every other Shiite leader of note, he will give operational control to the Iranians.

and annie, we did try to take down sadr before, back in 2004 when he launched an uprising. after a month or so of heavy, high-casualty fighting, the uprising ended and the u.s. declared victory. a couple months later sadr reappeared at the head of a large political party, even stronger than he was before. right now his party holds 20 or so seats in the iraqi legislature and are some of the main supporters of the current prime minister. i agree that he’s not at all a nice man, but for the u.s. to arrest him would mean the total collapse of the iraqi government and probably end up turning all of iraq except kurdistan into one big anbar province, and then what would bush be able to use as a half-assed excuse for invasion?
of course, the real irony here is that sadr’s rise to power is entirely a product of the u.s. invasion. any idiot could have predicted that fundamentalist shiite leaders would become prominent in a saddam-less iraq: the fact that the administration failed to plan for this only indicates that the country is currently run by extra-special idiots.

We, as a country – maybe not united and definately not fully informed – went into Iraq and made an already humongous mess even worse through incompetence, mendacity and sheer pig-ignorance on the part of our elected represenatives and government officials. The really funny thing is, the humongous mess Iraq already was is more or less our responsibility, as well, a responsibility we’ve done nothing but fumble. We trade barbs and talk policy, and people are dying because our “leaders” don’t give a damn and dirty little cowards with no souls are more than willing to see innocent blood shed to keep away some polemic booger man. I agree, our leaders lied and lied, and even though many of us were against it, a responsible nation, like a responsible adult, knows that sometimes you have to clean up a mess you didn’t make but made in your name.
I just don’t believe that anyone in the halls of power really give a shit. Not about the troops, not about Iraqi citizens caught in the crossfire, certainly not about freedom or democracy or happiness for anyone but them. They don’t have to, for they suffer no losses. It’s all a game to them.
I also don’t believe that the only thing we, as a responsible nation, can do to help a country we’ve so maligned over the past few decades, for absolutely no damn good reason to boot, is bring more death and destruction. I honestly don’t see how that can lead to anything but genocide. There has got to be a better way. Over the last few years, I’ve read thousands of blog comments about the Iraq insurgency; during the same period I’ve seen dozens of people testifying that Red Dawn is a favorite wingnut movie. Mikey’s comment above, however, is the first time that I’ve seen anyone articulate what we’ve all been thinking: the Iraqi resistance precisely mirrors what any red-blooded ‘murrican would do. Wolverines! Fuck yeah! Wolverines!
But then I go to Mikey’s blog and what do I find? The bastard hasn’t posted anything new since early June, and before that he seemed to be putting up comments only every couple of weeks or so.
So now you’re going to tell me that “It’s OK, he’s always here at SN! with his insight and ability to marshall facts against the forces of stupidity.” I want to call bullshit on that — he’s backpaged into the comments, so that one has to wade through the sewage produced by Annie and Gary in order to see what he has to say.
I’m probably just voicing the majority opinion when I say this, but by hiding away as he does, MIKEY IS HURTING AMERICA.

And why the hell should I have to come up with a plan? I’m not working on the reconstruction. And even if I did, that doesn’t mean those in power will listen to me. However, I will provide some basics that you will convenienty ignore.
1. Set up definate goals (not vague goals, like “democracy” or “peace”) and/or set up a timetable for gradual withdrawl.
2. Stop capturing people without charges and stop torturing them. I cannot stress this enough. The only thing this accomplishes is pissing everybody off.
3. Esatablish an actual police force in Iraq. A foreign military cannot act as an effective police force, as they are not trained in the subtleties of peacekeeping. Note that the # of active officers will be part of the goals in part 1.
4. Replace the chronies that are working on the reconstruction with people who have actual skills and experience in this kind of work.
This is just a rough list, but it’s a whole lot better than your final solution of “Bomb da fuxxorz!!!11!!111!!!”.
