Kinda Makes You Wish Stephanie Had Been Sent To Bartending School

- Actually OWS is a good thing because it may encourage parents to send their kids to trade schools instead of college, which will, of course, eliminate unemployment among the young.
‘Shorter’ concept created by Daniel Davies and perfected by Elton Beard. We are aware of all Internet traditions.™
FIRST!!!
Wait, did I come too early for the rest of you guys?
I don’t entirely disagree with her. I’ve always been a proponent of kids with decent grades having access to a free state-school education, and those who don’t have good grades–or aren’t interested in college–having access to a good trade school.
What is famous lines from gay porn, Alex?
OT: There’s this new guy who says that Mormonism is a cult.
I’m sure I’m not the first person to think this, but it occurred to me this morning that even if the right-wing Christianists got their perfect right, white, Christian nation, they’d still find ways to turn against each other. Because feeling superior to other groups of people is so much a part of their raison d’etre .
Her point, though, is that the liberal arts are a stupid luxury, not that such degrees should be free. As for vocational schools, they’re out there already:
They were shut down and all the money was spent on vagina studies!
The tuition at vocational colleges is also rising, particularly at the for-profit ones that are presumably preferred by people who write for the National Review.
Damn you, Clenis!
What’s wrong with Bart and why does he need ending?

If anything, there would probably be worse fighting over who was the right kind of Christian.

Exactly, and instead of 50 states there’d be 500+ and every week a new one as each denominational splinter demanded their own.
Her point, though, is that the liberal arts are a stupid luxury, not that such degrees should be free.
Several studies have shown that people with college degrees tend to have higher rates of employment, higher salaries, and higher rates of voting for Democrats. The cure for this horrible state of affairs is to make it unaffordable.
More vocational education. Sure, no problem. Except where are the manufacturing jobs in this country. Her anecdotal, my neighbor bullshit, doesn’t ring true. What she’s really saying to the 99% is don’t get educated at all, get trained to do a low paying physically demanding job where you can work until you’re 70 if you’re lucky enough to live that long without universal healthcare as a right, then you can retire on your privatized social security savings if there are any left after the banksters and speculators (the 1% who do get educated) have been handling it for 30-40 years and paying themselves lavish salaries and enjoying lavish lifestyles. If it’s gone by the time you need it, then that’s just the market working itself out and telling you that you made bad investment choices. If you get downsized, outsourced or have to take pay cuts along the way, then just suck it up and blame yourself and work harder. See, she really does care about the 99%ers.
Haven’t read the ASW™ piece yet, but McMegan was on about the same thing yesterday or the day before. There must have been a directive come out of Castle Dracula that from now on, instead of ridiculing poor people who work unskilled menail jobs by screeching about how they “chose to be poor; if they didn’t want to be they should have gone to COLLEGE!”, the new strategy is to tell the people who DID go to college in the hopes it would keep them from being poor that they’re chumps.
That’s true.

i threw up in my mouf a littlle…that/he/they are absolutely putrid…man, i hope i never get into heaven cuz i sure don’t want to spend eternity with those assholes…
It’s always the vaginas. Sheesh.
You know what would be a fun state? Duggarland: population 20
Isn’t he repulsive. Oooooooh, so much pro-lifeyness from the people who can’t get enough war.
BTW, what’s up with that hair? Bitch looks like an escapee from Sister Wives.
…Vocational schools would be opened again…
wow…i had no idea they had been closed down by the *educrats*…hmmm, so i wonder actually where the kids around here who said they were going to vo-tech actually went? and how did they get the diesel mechanic and whatnot jobs?
I don’t really have a problem with vocational school.
Even back in 1980 when I started college, my father wanted me to either major in engineering or just go to trade school rather than get a liberal arts degree.
bbkf – they went to private, for-profit vo-techs, and came out with shitloads of debt.
It’s the American way, you know. No matter what your job is in the future, you will train for it by going so far into debt that you’ll never get out. Kinda makes bitching about the shitty wages pointless, because if you made more, all you’d get to do with it is pay off debt.
It’s always the vaginas. Sheesh.
VAGINA’S ISREAL!!!!111!!!
Bitch looks like an escapee from Sister Wives.</i.
zomg! she does…actually more like the sister wives husband…d00d, cut your hair, already!
That is such bullshit. If we are playing my anecdote can beat up your anecdote, I know at least one frickin’ brilliant electrical engineer with a Master’s degree who is currently out of work. Electrical engineering is not generally considered one of your useless liberal arts, even by wingnuts. I would guess that a lot of the people at OWS already have jobs: at Starbucks, because that’s all theycan find.
Work in the building trades? Wasn’t the whole bubble caused by having an entire economy based on construction? These people arejust so fucking clueless about everything. They are just devoted to the belief that poverty has to be the fault of the poor. In the 1980s, when industry was being hollowed out, it was, “Well, they justneed to upgrade their skills to work in the new globalized service economy!” Now that the globalized service economy has melted down, it’s “They’re too damn lazy to work an industrial job!”
It almost makes one pine for the 19th century, when they would have said what they mean, which is “Fuck the proles. Are there no prisons?”
There’s this new guy
Theology degrees should be vo-tech. Or no-tech.
I don’t really have a problem with vocational school.
Even back in 1980 when I started college, my father wanted me to either major in engineering or just go to trade school rather than get a liberal arts degree.
i tried and tried to convince number one son to go to vo-tech, but the little rascal just couldn’t decide which trade he would like to spend the rest of his life at…he was determined to go the four year route…now that he’s been at it a while and is poorer than poor and steadily accumulating student loan debt, he has finally decided on getting what could have been a two year degree in criminal justice…
last night i was talking to a customer/friend of a family member who went to vo-tech in the mid-70s…and told me that at that time vocational education was free….i had no idea!
For the record, Mormons are absolutely not Christians. Christians believe God is God, Man is inherently sinful and unworthy of heaven, but by Grace alone can be saved, through acceptance of Jesus as the Savior, whose death on the cross provides atonement and forgiveness for all who believe, so that sinful humans can find everlasting reward in heaven, in the presence of God. Mormons believe in a doctrine known as the Law of Eternal Progression. Simply stated, “What man is, God once was; what God is, man may one day become.” In other words, by adherence to the teachings of Mormonism, men (not so much women) can become Gods themselves, perfect and complete. These points of view are absolutely not compatible.
Of course, I would point out that both doctrines are completely insane, irrational wish-fulfillment, along with Islam, Judaism, Animism, Scientology, Hinduism, Buddhism, Animism, Pantheism, Wicca, Shamanism and Republicanism. You can call them “Faiths”, “Religions”, “Cults”, or “Delusions”; as long as a candidate holds at least one of them as the guiding principle of his life, he or she has at least a chance of being elected to high office in this country. Anyone who calmly stands back and points out that there is absolutely no reason to subscribe to any supernatural belief system is of course an evil, dangerous monster who must be stopped at all cost!
Work in the building trades? Wasn’t the whole bubble caused by having an entire economy based on construction? These people arejust so fucking clueless about everything.
LOL! one of the commentors over there advised people that instead of settling in the big cities like new york, they should move to south dakota where they can *prosper*…i live right next fucking door to south dakota…and *prosper* is not the word that comes to mind…sure, there’s better job markets in sioux falls or rapid city, but the vast majority of the state is fucking desolate with dying small towns…
what really annoyed me is that he was all like LOL! there’s no sushi for you rich snobby little brats but there are starbucks! holy shit, you can get sushi in fargo for fuck’s sake…i would imagine it’s prosperous southern neighbor would have a few sushi joints as well…
hey steerpike! what’s with the double shout out? now we haz a sad…
That was a typo. The second one was meant to be anime-ism, the belief in redemption through shitty Japanese cartoons, My son is studying for high priesthood, apparently.
They’re Christians if they say they’re Christians. Catholics pray to saints and pretend it’s not some substitute pagan pantheon.
Germany has a strong vo-tech system, but they also have socialized medicine, kickass strong unions and lots and lots of well-paying manufacturing jobs. It does all this as governmental policy. The wingnuts aren’t advocating that. They want low wages and privatized everything.
they should move to south dakota where they can *prosper*
I have to go to Sioux Falls way more often than I care to. Sometimes that’s the best schedule my lowly seniority number can hold.
Not a bad place, but I’ve never walking around thinking “Man! Would you look at all the prospering going on here!”
Wasn’t the whole bubble caused by having an entire economy based on construction
Not quite. The more proximal cause was the tax structure that made it more profitable to invest in producing more investments than in producing an actual product. That’s how we got an economy based on construction.
Pardon the bad grammar. I had a 45-minute nap while jumpseating home this morning and then slept for maybe two hours.
I was shambling around the house like a, you know, zombie.
Germany also has no trade deficit. They still make things and sell them to other places.
Germany also has a great mass-transit system and a plan for renewable energy.
Trying to talk Mrs. Kong into moving to Cologne where the company just opened up a pilot base.
We can only go for 5 years, but it might be a good place to ride out the Cain/Romney/Perry/Bachmann administration.
okay…my last post put me in mind of something i heard on the radio earlier this week that really burned my britches and i think sums up how amurka has fucked up in the past and will apparently fuck up again due to unbridled greed….
the great garage logician joe soucheray was on about the oil boom up in north dakota…this to him is what america is all about…he went on and on, with the usual coterie of callers agreeing with him and wow! north dakota is really the place to be! everybody’s making money! they’re all happy! this is the way it should be! one old lady called in and said, ‘um, yeah…not happy with what’s happening to our previously small, quiet little farm towns…that’s what we loved about living here…now we got a bunch of yah00s invading and crime is up, people don’t feel as safe, there’s a bunch of skeevy d00ds making a shit ton of money, working long hours who, when they do finally get off the oil patch for some r & r really fuck stuff up…we want our small town back!’ he basically told her, ‘hey, if you don’t like prosperity, move!’
then he started hailing this d00d as the penultimate american and LOL obummer’s so dumb! basically this guy’s a hero because he worked his way up to become a big oil man…now he’s all into the bakken deal in nodak, WHICH WILL TOTALLY SUPPLY US WITH OIL TO INFINITY AND BEYOND AND FREE US FROM THE EVIL SAUDIS!!!! but obama is punishing him and being petty because *green* energy is *so much better* and isn’t that a liberal and euphorian illogic?
i do have a friend who works up there…he is making an insane amount of money…his wife still lives here even though he is always telling her to come up there and work at a mcdonalds for chritst’s sake! he almost talked me into geting my cdl (which his brother could train me for for free) and get a job driving a water truck around ‘the patch’…basically a person drives a water truck in a big circle supplying drillers with water (duh) for like twelve hours a day for $25+/per hour…more on weekends and nights…so basically, i could have worked up there for a year, made about 100 k which would retire all our debts and then some. but…conditions up there are horrendous, he admits…no housing…anything that is available is at insanely inflated prices…the prices of EVERYTHING has gone up…people are once again getting all they can while they can…
my question is, why don’t they learn from the unbridled greed of the boom and bust? yeah, i want people to make a profit from their services, but really? blatantly and admittedly screwing somebody else over so you can make as much money as you can as fast as you can? taking over a part of the state, pitting neighbor against neighbor, bilking farmers out of their land…haven’t we seen this played out before? and did it end well for everyone? yeah…i didn’t think so…
Isn’t he repulsive. Oooooooh, so much pro-lifeyness from the people who can’t get enough war.
vacuumslayer, you didn’t make a mistake when you said you don’t disagree with some of what the NRO commentator was saying, so there’s no need to spend the rest of the thread apologizing for it. Be bold and stick to your guns. Or clarify. Just don’t concede to Substance when you actually had a good point before going into your ‘but I really do hate all conservatives, just so you know’ routine.
This author didn’t say anything novel or ridiculous or anything that hasn’t been written or discussed among millions of parents for years sending their kids off to college and hoping he/she chooses a major that translates into a decent-paying job when they graduate. She didn’t say it was stupid to get a liberal arts degree, just that it was stupid to shell out 200 G’s for one and then bitch at banks for why you can’t find a decent job in a related field that pays you $100,000 to start for what you know about the Peloponnesian War. That maybe some of that manufactured anger should be directed at the universities that give them the impression their $200,000 price tag for that degree was going to yield fantastic returns every year for the rest of their lives, just like they drew it up on their Powerpoint presentations at orientation.
What she should have said was, you want to spend $200,000 for a liberal arts degree, fine, but why not get some vocational training on the side and learning a trade just in case things don’t work out like Obama promised you it would if you only gave him the chance, because sometimes politicians don’t always deliver.
If vagina studies aren’t vocational training, I don’t know what is.
Not a bad place,
admittedly, the sioux empire mall kicks ass…and they have olive garden!
admittedly, the sioux empire mall kicks ass…and they have olive garden!
We normally stay the Holiday Inn downtown but it’s under renovation so they have us out at the Marriott across from the empire mall.
I don’t miss the train going by every 30 minutes while I’m trying to sleep, but that’s about all it’s going for it. One more meal at the mall food court and I’ll lose my will to live.
Five badgers, repeatedly teabagging troll words. Priceless.
.
Where’s her sister, Jenny Sizzler?
Yeah, I still remember what Obama said in his PowerPoint presentation at freshman orientation. That fucker sold me a bill of goods, I’ll have you know!
If vagina studies aren’t vocational training, I don’t know what is.
it worked for this guy!
I’ve been thinking this OWS thing is a deadend unless it can articulate a real identifiable outcome and inflict real tangible hurt on the power structure in order to make it happen. What is that outcome, what is that hurt, and how do we keep building on the momentum? The outcome has to be big enough to matter. It can’t just be BofA backing off the $5 charge. It has to be systemic to politics and big business. Not just electing X versus Y either. A short list of meaningful reforms to get money out of politics and end the corporate personhood crap would be at least a good start. The hurt is going to have to be economic and hit the 1% hard. Not looting, not violence. A series of ever wider and deeper general strike days, boycotting gas stations, banks, credit cards – squeezing off the flow of capital to these bastards until we start winning real concessions. To paraphrase Ghandi, first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fear you, then you win. We are somewhere between being laughed at and starting to be feared (go read Eric Cantor’s fainting couch routine). We can’t get to win unless we keep pushing to and through the fear level.
One more meal at the mall food court and I’ll lose my will to live.
i’m only two hours away! swing by for some real food…
RWW – as I’ve said elsewhere, the nervousness of the 1% surrounding the OWS protests is, I think, rooted in this: what if people get the idea to simply stop paying off their debts.
I know a lot of people are in that boat already. But what if everyone who was overextended in debt just sat down today and started writing out letters to creditors: “Fuck you; I’m not going to pay.”
What would they do about it? What COULD they do about it, if they suddenly had 50 or 75 or 100 million people just saying, “fuck it, I’m not paying”? We don’t have enough collection agencies, courts, credit reporting bureaus, etc. to deal with 15, 20, 25% of the population just saying, “fuck it.” You can’t put them in jail. You can’t even really ding anyone’s credit in that type of situation, because at the other end, anyone who ever wants to sell them anything again is either gonna have to ignore the bad credit rating, refuse to do business with them, or close up shop themselves.
I think that may be part of what’s going on…the people who own everyone are hoping and praying that the folks they own don’t figure out that they can only be owned with their permission. And at any moment, if they decided en masse to throw off the chains, there’s not a fucking thing the “owners” could do about it.
In fact, that’s the outcome I’d really like to see.
The concern troll bullshit returns undiminished. Everyone here acknowledged the value of voc-Ed and that the author wasn’t off base on that one small item. What was criticized was the one dimensional thinking that merely substituting voc-Ed for a college degree absent real systemic changes in this country would solve anything. Also too, some pointed out that obtaining a voc-Ed certificate isn’t FREE or cheap and will end up with a student loan debt and a low paying job. The author never even said anything about Obama’s promises, so dragging O into this is just another stupid and gratuitous Conservatard flail.
That picture scares me!!
In fact, that’s the outcome I’d really like to see.
amen, sister! this is an incredible idea…where do i sign up?
Jennifer, I like your idea. It takes a huge leap of faith for those of us who’ve been making our mortgage payments these past 10 years to just stop and not think we’ll end up homeless by the time it’s all over. I know for many people it hasn’t been a choice to stop paying and that’s where I think the banksters are worried because that’s almost a critical mass and will bring the whole system down. Back around the time Obummer was forming his first stimulus and regrettably listening to Summers and Geithner, there was an idea floated to use the fed money to buy down individual debt by resetting mortgage values to actual home values. That would have been a good start along with pumping the money in elsewhere on the demand side. Too bad, virtually all the bailout has been on the supply side and here we are, still on the brink of collapse and no better off.
The concern troll bullshit returns undiminished
undiminished and disconnected…the ‘quote’ he was chastising vs for had nothing to do with the topic…you know, OT…just like she posted a little further up…she was agreeing with me that baptist minister guy is a tool NOT conceding to subby…sigh…
The refrain is pretty much always the same: “We didn’t screw you over, with our determination to get rich at all costs, no, it’s you, the poor people, who bear the full responsibility for the shitty state this country is in, by not doing whatever we tell you, and letting us take your money while you starve in the streets. Bad poor people!”
Fucking right-wingers, how do they sleep at night? Oh, yeah, on mattresses stuffed with OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY.
…Ad I’m totes in on the not paying for debt idea. Along with not paying insurance companies outrageous amounts of money.
But I still want to pay my taxes, because free schooling should be the American Dream, goddammit.
bbkf – I dunno…this is just one of my random thoughts. I would think there would have to be some dissemination of the idea via internets and at the rallies themselves.
I have to say too that I am of mixed emotions about it. On the one hand, I’ve always prided myself on paying all my debts. I think most of us are raised with the idea that this a point of honor. Problem is, these days, the banksters and the 1%ers use that against us. So while on the one hand I may look at my CareCredit bill and say, “shit, $2500 balance after paying for a year on non-optional dental care? Oh well, I DID get the care, so I DO owe the bill,” on the other I could look at it and say, “fuck these guys. The dentist has already been paid and he’s the one who performed the service. These fuckers are just lampreys and remoras, sucking off the misfortune of others to make a few bucks.”
Because the bottom line is, anything you owe for, the people you owe are the very same ones who made the product or service for which you owe and sold it at an inflated price while depressing your wages. Really, with very few exceptions, that is how it works out.
So yeah, I can see this idea catching on and spreading. And like I said, if it caught on with a large enough group of people, what the fuck do they think they can do about it? What, we’re going to go on a debtor’s prison building spree and build enough prisons to house 50 million people? Kinda fucking doubt that.

RWW – as I’ve said elsewhere, the nervousness of the 1% surrounding the OWS protests is, I think, rooted in this: what if people get the idea to simply stop paying off their debts.
In the Bible there are Jubilee years decreed, where debts are forgiven across the board, and charging interest is explicitly forbidden except to foreigners, in many passages and much clearer language than anything about homosexuality or abortion, and yet many churched folks seem to embrace unregulated economic injustice and corruption as if it were God’s own system. Freaky.
And to add to the above: I can see where this idea would be very helpful in gaining leverage.
As in, “Fix this fucker or we WILL stop paying.” That “fix” should include things like fixing the tax system to where it’s progressive once again and the rich fuckers are paying their fair share so the rest of us can afford things like college. It should include a new understanding of the notion of corporate “personhood” – a new understanding that a fucking corporation is NOT a goddamned “person” and never will be one unless you can show me examples of one getting a lethal injection for killing or maiming people through negligence or active disregard of everything other than profit. That fix should include full reinstatement of the estate tax and ideally, complete reform of campaign financing such that only citizens eligible to vote are eligible to contribute to campaigns, and then only up to a certain threshold.
There are a lot of good demands that could be directly tied to such a threat, all of which would help address the underlying issues.
Fucking-A right. More than one Roman emperor, good and bad alike, began his reign by burning records of all outstanding debts – public as well as private – in a huge bonfire in the open market.
Just to get a little more anecdote-ey about jobs, trade jobs and unemployment –
I happen to work for an organization that is downsizing. The division I’m in has some 30 FTE permanent staff plus 10 folks who are “temps” (even tho the temps work pretty close to 30 hours a week regularly). About half-a-dozen of the staff are “office workers” or managers, the rest are all laborers, custodial, etc. This structure has been in place over 20 years, and most of the employees have been on the payroll for 10 years or more.
Upper management has decided to change all this; they’re going to contract out a lot of the maintenance and custodial work, and even some of the sales and product development, reducing the total number of staff from 40 down to 10.
The whole rejiggering includes a facility shut-down and renovation, so management was able to give everybody a year-long heads-up – essentially, telling everyone whose position was being eliminated that they’ve got a year to get a new job.
Management has also stepped up to provide career counseling services, assistance and training, and has promised fast-tracking folks for transfers to any open position they qualify for within the company.
So far three people have successfully found jobs at other company departments. But job-searching turns out to be really tough for the rest of the guys, both internally and externally.
Most of the guys who are being let go are laborers or custodians. They’re jack-of-all-trades guys; a little carpentry, painting, re-wiring. They can lift, tote, carry. They can operate forklifts. They can deliver things in trucks. They can change lightbulbs in high ceilings and lay carpet.
But it turns out they can’t get jobs doing those things. The testing process is so rigorous they can’t even get on the short list.
A typical test for a custodian asks applicants all kind of mathematical questions. There are questions about different types of floor-buffing machinery and the kinds of pads you put on them. There are questions about chemistry. The questions for a groundsworker job are similar. If you want to work as an electrician’s apprentice, you have to test about your scientific knowledge of electricity.
These are great guys with great work ethics, very reliable, dependable, inventive. They learned everything on the job – they didn’t go to school for it. They know you don’t mix bleach and ammonia – they just can’t tell you what the chemistry of it is. They know enough about the buffing machine they use to rebuild it from scratch – they just don’t know about buffing machines they’ve never used before.
They’re not used to taking written tests. Most of them don’t do a lot of writing. Some of them can’t read very well.
When they got their jobs originally, you didn’t have to take a written test to be an entry-level laborer.
Now, after 20 years on the job, they can’t get hired. They can’t even get on the short list. It’s heartbreaking.
As for the written tests – you’d have to have gone to some kind of vocational schooling to pass them. And who goes to school to become a custodian?
i def agree about paying one’s debts…i just like the idea of making those fuckers squirm…
Yeah, that training is hard to break free of…but on the other hand, I look at it this way: I’ve been upholding my end of the bargain all along. Have the banks? Fuck no.
6 months after the meltdown in 2008, I get a letter from Shittybank saying, “guess what? We’re going to double your minimum monthly payment, even though you’ve had this account for 10 years, never been late in paying, and only less than a year ago accrued this balance on the basis of an offer WE made to YOU to consolidate all your debt at this low rate. Well, we fucked the economy so we need the money NOW, and fuck the agreement, pay up.”
So I got on the phone and called Shittybank and said, “you have a choice: you can either continue to accept payments at the higher-than minimum I’ve been paying, or I can go declare bankruptcy and you can get at the end of the line, which I’m pretty sure is where the judge will put you when I point out that your unreasonable demands are what sent me into bankruptcy in the first place, along with your trashing the economy which has resulted in me making half as much in income now as I was making a year ago. Your choice.” They, not surprisingly, chose to continue receiving payments, and even lowered the interest rate to 1.9% based on my agreement that I would pay at least x dollars per month until the balance was paid off.
Based on that, I do think they have a very real fear that we will figure out that the only guarantee they have that we’ll pay is our goodwill – and it’s wearing quite thin.

The voc-school alternative is not so viable these days. At one point, a competent auto tech could make US$ 100K per year. Now, the corporate comglomerate dogs have consolidated the market of providers (the tire companies are the biggest movers) and the average tech is in the US$ 40-50K range, with entry-leve @ US$ 20K. I know people who went to tech schools with “six-figure incomes” ringing in their ears as they inked the loan deals and made the tool investments (US$ lotsa). That they would never achieve that in the current market is never made clear, and that it would take many years, further investment in training, tools & cerifications to just stay current and get the salaries that are offered today.
The OWS won’t be effective unless sustained and focused. Demonstrations, boycotts, strikes and tying up corporate legal depts are all good strategies, but the 1% is well-suited to the long run. The logical progression is riots in the streets, kidnappings/murders of rich folk, generalized mayhem and tragedy. When did a “quiet revolution” produce a great social change? Even the US labor movement didn’t produce results without bloodshed. The turmoil in the mideast (Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Libya et al) is an example of how it’s done. Who all in the US is ready to go that route? There still is no guarantee that the outcome will be anything like the vision at the outset.
WHOA NELLY.
I was running my Task Manager over this when I returned to Sadlyland just now … & when I closed it I was shmucked in the bean full-force at the speed of light with the, er, ahem, raw unfiltered splendour & magic of Guttmann!
OH SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-it.
But no big deal.
Heck, chances are I probably wouldn’t’ve had much use for that silly old stomach-lining anyway, amirite?

In both cases (American labor movements and Arab Spring revolutions), wasn’t it usually thugs paid by the authorities that drew first blood, and the demonstrators just responding in self-defense? Asking “are we ready to go that route” ignores that it’s not really up to us.
And really, Gandhi and MLK showed that doubling down on non-violence even in the face of violent opposition can be a winning strategy.

Well, not always at a personal level.

I know this guy…QED.
You can’t shake logic like that.
I think she’s right. After all, Clarence Thomas blamed Yale Law School for the fact that he couldn’t find anything but a government job after graduation, and now look at him.
g, I see a similar phenomenon at work (or did) in the food plants I used to tour in the course of my job. As machinery becomes more sophisticated and harder to operate, workers with poor literacy and/or English skills get shut out. This is made worse by the fact that many factories don’t have any training worthy of the name (or don’t any more–it was deemed expendable).
These guys don’t understand anything but money. The best way to hurt them is to take it away or keep it away from them. In fact, it’s the ONLY way to hurt them.
A couple of things in Gutmann’s piece struck me:
1. It stands in contrast to the kind of thing you’d see on the pages of NR back in the 1950s and 1960s. Back then, a liberal arts education was the kind of thing that NR’s writers said America needed more of and that increased emphasis on technical & vocational education (or even science & engineering in higher ed) was merely emulating the Communists and that such a society would lose proper understanding of values like liberty, etc.
2. Of course, Gutmann repeats the right-wing shibboleth that the problem with hiring is “regulation”, though we of course are not given an example of what these risky regulations are.
If you think about it, though, you do see the conservative notion of proper orders and classes here. The idea here is that the “masses” should know their place and keep it.

Afternoon POOP down at OWS Central.
Student loans are the FIRST thing people should say “fuck no, I’m not paying it back.” Because, realistically, how the fuck is a kid gonna pay back $100K or more in this economy, or the one we’ll have in 5 years, even? They can’t. So might as well not kill yourself trying. Tell the banks to go fuck themselves.
How the fuck are the gonna repossess THAT? Even sending zrm in to do the repo won’t help, because the value of those branes as NOMMABLE commodoties is nowhere near the value of the education that’s been stuffed into them.
Jennifer: Makes sense.
There’s a bigger problem here- a lost generation. Until the economy transforms into something that could possibly grow, we’re stuck right where we are. The living wage is gone. Higher education is way out of reach for working class families, and K-12 education is getting less and less effective.
None of this is going to change for a long time. We’re graduating several million kids with sub-par educations and a third world job market. We have to fix eduation and wait around for 12 to 15 years for the effects of those improvements to take hold.
Serial POOP
Here’s a heartwarming picture of the America feared and loathed by the conservatives.
This just in: Al Davis Dead
Phew–stinky dead thread is stinky and dead.
The joke starts, “So Steve Jobs, Rev. Shuttlesworth and Al Davis walk up to the Pearly gates…”
The joke starts, “So Steve Jobs, Rev. Shuttlesworth and Al Davis walk up to the Pearly gates…”
Punchline: “There’s an app for that.”
Reminds me of when Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson died within a few hours of each other. The joke was something like, “Farrah Fawcett found herself in Heaven, with an angel who said “because you were a good person in life, we will grant one you one wish’ and Farrah said, “I just want for all the children in the world to be safe from harm’ …”
If not for wingnut welfare, Ms Stephanie would be cleaning toilets in a dive bar.
Here’s a good Al Davis pic for you geeks, & a pimping, too!
I’m not quite sure why the psychoanalysis upthread.
I changed the subject because this one bores me and everyone has heard me harp on it before.
Plus, I merely skimmed the NRO piece, so it’s entirely possible I missed something. I’m open to being corrected. (FTR, I am very much in favor of folks attending vocational schools, if that’s a feasible option.)
Please don’t use me to create a strawliberal. I’ve disagreed (agreeably) with people here before, on everything from the celebrations of Bin Laden’s death (I didn’t really have a big problem with them) to the use of the word “nigger” in “Huckleberry Finn.” I’m pretty sure everyone here, to a person, hates Bill Maher, and I love him and will never shy away from saying so.
Sooooo, let’s leave me out of the trolling repertoire, mmmk?
BTW, on a lighter note, I love how zrm blogwhores, talks about his work, talks about his musical adventures…so you go to his blog and sing his praises and congratulate him on his nifty adventures…and he ignores you. I swear, it’s like some kind of weird performance art.

It’s like yer brane got ate and you didn’t even KNOW IT!
At last, zombies have an opponent they can handle.
And poor sad Dennis. It must be awful for him to have his nose pressed against the window while watching decent people enjoy themselves, &c., knowing he’ll never be inside (or outside, whatever) & part of the fun.
“I’m pretty sure everyone here, to a person, hates Bill Maher, and I love him and will never shy away from saying so.
I HATE HIM SO MUCH–GARRRR!
He’s a junior in college with a degree in libtardation LOL!
That’s how college works, right? You get a degree and then you enroll in college. I’m pretty sure Rush said that’s how it works.
See?
Lol–MB, you’re gonna be in so much trouble.
Uh, I don’t hate Bill Maher.
I sometimes think he’s a full of shit asshole and wilfully obtuse on things where he doesn’t want to see the point, but I don’t out and out hate him. I still watch Real Time. Though at least half the time it’s not great, it’s the only place where I get to see Salman Rushdie on a fairly regular basis.
Oh yeah? Sez who?
The problem w/ B.M. is he hasn’t yet learned “not to be the weird one.”
wilfully obtuse on things where he doesn’t want to see the point
I think it’s just a devil’s advocate ploy, cranked to 11. He’s much smarter than he manages to appear at times.
Steerpike: That reminds me of another one.
Q- What does Michael Jackson like about twentyeight year old boys?
A- There’s twenty of ’em!
I love Real Time, but if the panel’s a stinker, the show can suck ass.
And for a person who’s supposedly a libertarian, I’ve never seen anyone who salivates more at the prospect of ripping them apart whenever they appear on his show. Seriously. He seems to really have a bug up his ass about libertarians. I, of course, mean this as a compliment.
zrm’s gonna eat your brane for saying that plants >zombies.
I think Bill Maher’s a douche, but I sort of like Religulous.
What about plant-zombies? Solomon Grundy, for example?
Solomon Grundy? Thought Swamp-Thing was the P-Z.
No, I typed that plants = zombies. Don’t be a Dennis.
I swear, it’s like some kind of weird performance art.
Don’t swear at me. Dennis will faint at the vulgarity.
SHUT UP, SMUT!
Wait…
zrm’s gonna eat your brane for saying that plants >zombies.
to be fair, the zombies in that game are particularly dim, like if Scott walker’s administration was zombified, while the plants are dancing little motherfuckers that poop out deadly peas, so it’s kind of unfair.
Also, it’s a fucking game. what are you, a conservative? Next you’ll be complaining about puppets.
Well, Swamp Thing was a Plant Elemental who merely had the memories of scientist Alec Holland. The current series has a resurrected Alec Holland apparently going to become Swamp Thing. Either way, I don’t think he counts as a zombie.
Solomon Grundy is a zombie who was a failed Plant Elemental. He more resembles a pop culture zombie, so I went with him.
I’m not sure what Solomon Grundy’s deal will be post-Flashpoint. Either his Golden Age connections (being a villain of the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott) will have him placed on Earth 2, or his popularity as a villain will have him in the regular DC Universe.
I love how zrm blogwhores, talks about his work, talks about his musical adventures…so you go to his blog and sing his praises and congratulate him on his nifty adventures…and he ignores you. I swear, it’s like some kind of weird performance art.
On the other stump, I love how VS will come over to a blog and leave a lovely comment, but it’s still has to be about her.
But who’s ignoring? I slept in this morning.

In the Bible there are Jubilee years decreed, where debts are forgiven across the board
You gotta give Boniface VIII credit for taking that tradition and perverting it into a forgiveness of *spiritual* debts; i.e. absolution of all your sins (by way of spending $$$ on a pilgrimage to Rome in a Jubilee year).
Wikipedia article about the 1300 Jubilee Year (and subsequent ones) is hoicked straight from the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia and is determined to correct popular misunderstandings of the concept of ‘indulgences’.
As has been pointed out previously, the old-testamenty Jubilee tradition derives from the Sumerian concept of ‘ama-ar-gi’, so the libertarians are following Boniface with their current determination to creatively misread that as

However, I WILL be referring to him as “Pookie Bouffant” from now on.
Anybody know if the new Shade miniseries is going to be based on Earth 2? That’s the only way all the Starman stuff will make sense. You can’t really have the whole Starman legacy thing in a DC Universe where superheroes have only been around for 5 years.
zomg, this seems like a job for Sadlie Naughties!

Totally off topic –
We’re having a problem with our cat and maybe someone here can help.
She’s started pooping on the floor near the litter box instead of in the litter box.
Same cat, same litter box, same litter for 13 years but now she all of a sudden doesn’t want to poop in there.
We’ve tried changing the litter more frequently but it hasn’t helped.
After characterizing homosexuality as a “threat to public health,” Fischer proceeded to excoriate the Occupy Wall Street movement and liberals in general for being “driven by this angry, bitter” greed “for the wealth of productive Americans.”
As I said before, the Bible explicitly forbids a number of the ways Wall Street earns money more times than it ever addresses the hot homosex, but here’s Fischer ignoring verse after verse about economic and social injustice to bag on the fags. Read it and weep, motherfucker: “This is the sin of Sodom; she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.”
Sounds more like Fischer and those cheering him than it does the protestors or gay folks.
Usually when a cat does something like that it’s to communicate displeasure. Is she pooping in the box when the litter is completely fresh & unused? If so, she’s communicating a desire for a not-gonna-happen level of litterbox cleanliness.
Sorry I can’t help more than that. My cat is awesome – she goes outside, unless she’s locked up in the house. She’s never gone anywhere but in the box in the house.
try a new box, yo.
I long to hear the skwirl of the bagpipes.
Yes, she’ll use the box when it’s fresh.
We used to change it once a week and now we’re changing it twice a week.
She’s 13…have you considered getting her a hoveround?
She’s 13 but she’s pretty much as healthy and active as she’s ever been.
OK, she sleeps 20 hours a day instead of a playful, kittenish 19 hours a day…

I am drooling with envy. Or maybe it’s the combination of pint-glass Cuba Libres and two episodes of “Rome”.
“We need a president who understands that we must choose as a nation between homosexuality and liberty”
I literally have no idea what this means.
It means we can stick our florida in a good place or a bad one, and the president is making the decision which bay, gulf, or harbor gets splooged.
Homosexuality is a prison for him. A sweet, sweet, sweaty prison.
Oh, and, uh…I am outraged by the treatment of Starfire!
Nope. Still confused.
Btw, just watched “Bridesmaids.”. A fucking revelation. Its all these amazing funny women and the men hardly mattrer. It was such a refreshing change I almost cried.

I cut myself tonight making dinner. Does this mean I’m really hardcore or I just need betta knives?
Well, if you cut yourself, the knife did what it was supposed to do. I’m gonna go with hardcore. Now put a safety pin over the cut to hold it shut and you’ll be uberfuckingsolid hardcore.
“Translation: We need a president with guts enough to exterminate all the faggots. That’s what this fucking nazi is really saying.”
Yeah, I know, but why doesn’t he have the FUCKING BALLS to just come out and say it? If his cause so righteous?
Btw…where’s Pup? ANYWAY…I made chicken tacos. Rotisserie chicken breast sautéed in chicken stock and chipotle with onions and bell pepper, served with choppEd red onion, cilantro, tomato, avocado, and feta cheese. Holy shit.
Also cumin-roasted cauliflower.

They don’t need a citizen who confuses what they shouldn’t decide as a loose configuration of individuals between heterosexuality and fascism.
“let him get hungry enough.”
Ha!
Yeah, you keep posting what you cook on here–I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be choosing leftovers over all that biznass.
“We need a president who understands that we must choose as a nation between sauerkraut and the infield fly rule.”
If the Bosox only had more sauerkraut . . .
I would replace the infield fly rule with the DH rule. The DH rule is as unamerican as calling soccer football.
Ha! I bring it upon myself with my mad [strikethrough]knife[/strikethrough] cooking skills.
It’s rather educational (as well as much easier on the brain) to watch Fischer do his little Camwhoring For Jesus™ schtick with no sound.
I know a guilty/terrified motherfucker when I see one, & that is one extremely swivel-eyed, twitchy-faced rat bastard right there … ten’ll get you twenty Fischer is absolutely NOT the righteous True Believer he sells himself to the rubes as, but just another slimy con-man selling whatever ridiculous claptrap will get him MO’ MONEY & airtime on the media … & that now – with a big frothing mob being amped up by his & others’ screeching – the pathetic old tart is increasingly scared shitless 24/7 that someone’s going to prove what a two-faced hate-pimp he really is & make him into a misery-magnet for the real zealots.
Either that or someone just told him that Obama gave America’s bears free Interwebs access & concealed-carry permits.

I’ll answer my own question by saying both of them will miss the point in spectacular fashion.
Not a fan of either of these fuckwits, but I like the sudden spine I’m seeing.

They wouldn’t be so shameless as to pretend to care about what their voters think just before an election, would they?
Yeah–it has everything to do with that, but I’ll take a victory any way I can get it. I’m trying to stop myself from expecting sane policy out of Democrats for at least the next few years. Although, what happens with this Occupy thing remains to be seen. It could shift things back a little.
They wouldn’t be so shameless as to pretend to care about what their voters think just before an election, would they?
That’s half of it. The other half is that they’re seeing actual popular mobilization from the left, and the rest of the country isn’t crucifying them as DFHs… yet. OWS is probably contributing as well.
Bears should NEVER carry pistols. That cannot end well.
COMMIE BASTID!!111!!1

The shamelessness is a given by now. Democracy’s big plus is that the pols have no choice but to pander to the peasants when election time rolls around … thus, given how hard they suck the rest of the time, the obvious improvement would be shorter terms of office.

“It’s morally wrong,” said Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (R-San Bernardino). “We have just created a new entitlement that is going to cause tens of thousands of people to come here illegally from all over the world.”
What the hell is he blathering about? Conservative trolls on blogs all over the country have assured me that the United States already has entitlements that are bringing tens of thousands of people here illegally, because it’s so easy for them to partake in it. Now he’s telling us this is a new thing, brought about by this new law specifically? Then what the hell have I been getting outraged about for the last few decades?

Indeed, anything that improves life for people living legally in the US is going to create a perverse incentive for people to move there.
Perhaps the Representative will be happy when wages & living standards in the US have been reduced to those of Somalia and there is no longer the same attraction for illegal immigrants.

Shit, things must be even worse than I thought.
At the risk of being a concern troll, there is one thing missing from all the media coverage of the Occupy Wall Street protests (not that there is at least a little bit of grudging coverage): American flags. Now, I don’t want to see garish flag shirts or paraphernalia, any more than ridiculous revolutionary war-era costumes. This movement is absolutely NOT a “Tea Party of the Left”, nor should it be. But by not carrying the flag, it makes it that much easier for the right-wingers to portray the protesters as “anti-American”. These people are true patriots; they love this country so much that they are trying to make it better. We should not cede the symbols of patriotism to the ones who are truly trying to destroy this country. This is OUR country, more so than the parasitic corporations that are all too happy to loot our wealth and ship our jobs overseas. The American Flag is OUR symbol, and the protesters should be waving it proudly as they march.

only because i’m sick to death of the charade politics has become…i got to thinking about past protests and googled the march on selma…yep, flags galore!
you raise a valid point…but i still wonder, would the protestors carrying flags be enough for them? or would they still be derided as stupid, spoiled, lazy brats?
My 2 cents,
The OWS protesters can carry all the flags they want, yet never find favor with the kind of people who think that you have to display a flag to be patriotic. None of those pricks will ever take this seriously_union thugs were down there oppressing whitey already.
Agreed, carrying the flag will do nothing to curry favor from the wingers; that’s not the reason they should carry it. We should not allow our enemies to claim it as their symbol exclusively. That’s MY flag, dammit, and it belongs in these protests, more so than in some media-created, corporate-funded “tea Party” rally.

No disagreement whatsoever.
I’m torn. I can’t STAND bumper-sticker patriots. On the other hand, one of the core values of this country, despite the abuse it suffers when the left does it, is our inalienable right to gather peacefully and petition the government for redress of grievances. That flag represents those values, and I consider what the OWS people are doing honoring that flag. So…yeah. I don’t know.

The corporate-owned media cheered the teabaggers, because those fools are tools of the corporations.
And for the same reason, they oppose OWS.
It is that simple.
~
I admit, I’m almost as burned out with the gratuitous flag displays as I am with the yellow ribbons.
Yanks get it laid on buku extra-thick, alright … one of my very least favourite forms of Amerikanization = teh renascence of Red Maple Leaf Rabies.
Totems or icons of any kind make me exceedingly unhappy & nervous – other than as art.
Symbols have consequences.
Symbols are for the symbol-minded.
I don’t have a thing against symbols, per se; I’ve got an American flag hung up in my room that’s staring me in the face right this second, actually. But in the political arena, like the yellow ribbons, it almost always means nothing but “shut up, that’s why” (or alternatively, “my patriotism’s bigger than your patriotism.”) Granted, the bad guys have been doing that for long enough that the good guys deserve a turn – God knows we deserve it at least as much. It’s just not my inclination personally.
Symbols haven’t evolved since they were painted on the walls of caves long before any written record. When speaking to those who still believe in them, sometimes it’s best to use them.
But by not carrying the flag, it makes it that much easier for the right-wingers to portray the protesters as “anti-American”.
I disagree. I don’t think flags would make a damned bit of difference.
The corporate media cheered the teabaggers, because both groups are tools of the corporations. It made no difference that the teabaggers were carrying signs like this, along with their flags.
And it would make no difference if O.W.S. was waving flags…they’re clearly not tools of the corporations, and thus are enemies of our corporate press.
And I remember this:
“When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross.”
And think: hell, fascism is here already. Let’s fight those fuckers!
~
Symbols have consequences.
Absolutely. What do you think the OWS demonstration is? It is a symbol, and a powerful one. This is not an actual, military occupation, it is symbolic. Any march, protest, parade, rally, whatever, is a symbol, whether it’s a sitin at a campus admin office, or crossing a bridge in Birmingham, it’s a symbolic gesture, and symbols matter. If you think they don’t, why should anyone care whether a statehouse in the south flies the Stars and Bars? Ask yourself, what would the media say if they got a photo of some DFH waving the Sickle and Hammer? All it would take is one–probably a plant by some ‘bagger–and the whole movement would be discredited.
Repigs condemn, useless tools latch on.
Repigs condemn, useless tools latch on.
WOW – a black guy actually plays the “welfare Cadillac” card? The people who fought for Cain’s right to make it to where he is now would be so proud.

LOL–from the comments:
In that time-honored Grapes of Wrath–esqe tradition, they could put Ma in the flatbed and set off cross-country to look for work.
OMG did she actually say this?
See, THIS is why I STAY IN THE GODDAMN BOAT.
More comment LOLZ

Yeah, this.
Symbols have meanings, and they’re an easy and effective way to get a point across. We don’t need to let the Reich wing paint themselves as the only patriots in the game.
Speaking of right-wing plants…

It’s been nearly 20 years since the USSR fell–do any of those kids even know what the Hammer and Sickle is anymore?
If the liberals won’t be the strawliberals, we paint them as, WE’LL be the strawliberals. Fucking ASSFACES. Hey, if they’re so right about everything, why do they need to pull stunts like this?
I have, no idea, why, I’ve been peppering all, my comments, with unnecessary, commas.
But it sure is annoying comma really.
Right on, daddy-o. It irritates me that the American flag has become so heavily associated with the right. It wasn’t always this way: IWW strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts, 1912.
But then I’m annoyed that red has become the right-wing color.
G,o, a,l,l, t,h,e, w,a,y.
Stephanie Gutmann looks like she’s auditioning for a zombie movie.
Ratfucking the OWS would be all too easy. How about footage of a protester burning an American flag? I don’t think that would be difficult for a scumbag like Breitfart or O’Keefe to arrange, and by the time the truth came out, the damage would be done (Ask Shirley Sherrod about this). Symbols matter, and any protest movement has to be about managing symbolism. I respect the truly democratic, leaderless and spontaneous nature of this movement, but if they won’t control and manage their image, it will be managed for them, and not to their advantage.
I’d be pretty surprised if something like that wasn’t in the planning stage.
Click thudner’s link.
I’d be pretty surprised if something like that wasn’t in the planning stage.
When Governor Walker got trapped into admitting in public that he and his peeps had contemplated sending provocateurs into the union crowd to start riots or violent incidents, the only jaw-dropping thing in the entire conversation was when he said that he’d ended up deciding against it.
I’ve been slightly surprised at the amount of backlash this got from the right; you’d think they’d just ignore it until it blows over, at least at first (it’s not like anyone cared about the war protests, for example). I guess the protestors are just a little too uncomfortably close to the mark, and they’re absolutely terrified of the message catching on.
More right-wing plants.
Like someone needs to fake embarrassing this movement. A dude crapping on an nypd squad car doesn’t embarrass it, nothing will.

Why are you surprised? ALL of those motherfuckers knew this day was coming. They just kept going until it hit. They knew it was coming, they know it’s here, and they’re fucking pissed that the money tap is going get turned down a little bit. Maybe. They subconsciously know that they deserve to get one of those career ending neck injuries like their old pal Louis.
Look–they had choices all along. They chose to do credit default swaps and knew what the aftermath would look like. They knew what would happen when they pushed credit cards and easy in-store revolving credit on the lower classes. They knew what interest-only and sub-prime mortages would do to the value of housing. They KNEW ALL THIS SHIT. THEY ALL SAW IT COMING like a brick wall in front of their speeding Lamborghinis. They just kept the pedal down, knowing that government airbag would save their dumb asses. They also knew that continuing business as usual after being bailed out, after millions of retirements suffered losses, after housing hit the floor and won’t be getting back up anytime soon that this would be the eventual result.
Obama and all those fuckhead asshole POS Democrats fucking KNEW IT TOO. NOW they want to be down with the message? I don’t fucking THINK SO, madame speaker. You can stick it up your butt with your head, FYVM.
Like someone needs to fake embarrassing this movement. A dude crapping on an nypd squad car doesn’t embarrass it, nothing will.
That was NOT a flattering picture of you, Dennis.
Yes, one errant shitter should discredit an entire movement.
errant shitter
LOL
I rather enjoy making these for you, Denny.
Jesus Christ. I’m not sure even honey badger would wanna mess with that shit.
Why are you surprised?
Because I thought they’d simply ignore them until they blew over, just pretend they’re not happening. That’s what they did in 2003 when massive anti-war demonstrations went underreported. Instead, we’re getting MASSIVE butthurt.

Well, at the time we got tax cuts AND a war for which disproportionately low number of citizens had to sacrifice anything. They kept the magnetic ribbons coming, called anyone who didn’t agree a traitor, freedom hater…
Just look at how much worse things are now. NOW we’re all making sacrifices for the GOP’s piece of shit wars. We have a lousy president who doesn’t seem to have much of a problem with all the domestic spying and civil liberties violations, and has absolutely no intention of stopping either of our wars. We’re all suffering to keep the rich from paying some taxes. We’re suffering–FOR REAL. The reason the right is so alarmed is because they know this isn’t going to go away. The growth of this thing was awfully explosive. That has got to be pretty unsettling when you’re on the wrong side of it.
Also, it might just be me, but I think I’ve noticed a massive uptick of sympathetic internet activity–comments on articles–giving asshole right wingers the business. I think something is really happening here. They know that, and they’re fucking petrified.
LOL’s, maybe its not like shooting fish in a barrel.

Good explanation. Yeah, I’ve noticed it too and think you’re right. They’re afraid this is the start of the popular anger at Wall Street they’ve been afraid of since 2008 (the one the teabaggers were supposed to prevent).

If there was a single real thing about the Tea Party, we would have joined forces for this. The idea that Washington is owned by Wall Street is an infuriating truth. Unfortunately, the Tea Partiers fell under the spell of people like Dick Armey and went hopelessly insane. Let’s hope this movement doesn’t suffer the same fate.
I think “Dick Army” would be a better name for it than “Tea Party” anyway.
I only wish I had this kind of strength.

I don’t think they even fell under the spell…. they were hopelessly insane from the start. It’s the Republican base, isn’t it?
Well, ya know, it reminds me of troll behavior. They push and push and needle and needle until they get someone to say something inappropriate or mistaken or whatever then they scream “SEE?!!!”
Well, yeah, except that (strictly my perception here) it seems like the first 10 minutes or so were a protest against the lack of representation in Washington due to the influence of lobbyist and corporate money. I knew when they were buying trainloads of teabags and calling themselves teabaggers that they were really the shallow end of the rhetorical pool for the right wing, but if we’re all looking at the fact that Washington is really the executive arm of corporate America, and that the mass media is the communications department, don’t we ALL suffer? That other 99% actually includes those idiot racists with the signs.
Well, ya know, it reminds me of troll behavior. They push and push and needle and needle until they get someone to say something inappropriate or mistaken or whatever then they scream “SEE?!!!”
It is. I’m not especially good and controlling myself in those situations, in case you hadn’t noticed LOL. I’m more of the “by any means necessary” type. I need to behave.
Yup. Studies have shown this. Citation needed? See this.
Well, I figure if there’s anyone here who will give a troll crumbs, it’s you. Which frustrates me because the troll knows nothing about you. Except that. Which doesn’t even begin to cover you.
Well, yeah, except that (strictly my perception here) it seems like the first 10 minutes or so were a protest against the lack of representation in Washington due to the influence of lobbyist and corporate money.
The way it always seemed to me (strictly my perception also) is that it was never more than a protest against the lack of representation of them specifically, which is to say, they lost an election. They got off the air in early 2009 around the exact moment of the Obama inauguration, but there wasn’t a peep out of them in the previous fall during the crisis.
Then again, the very first time I heard of people calling themselves “tea partiers” was from Bill Whittle of PJM – anything approvingly cited by him, you can be assured that it’s far, far right.
It doesn’t, but I have to unleash the aggression on SOMEBODY?
Hey, look: ON TOPIC!! Who’d a thunk it?
The way it always seemed to me (strictly my perception also) is that it was never more than a protest against the lack of representation of them specifically, which is to say, they lost an election.
Yup, they lost an election was all it was. “I want my country back” means back from the you-know-what in the White House, not from Wall Street & other corporate interests.

Pimpin’ again: Something not (yet) seen elsewhere about The American Spectator & its young agent provocateur.
Yeah, the Tea Party was about stickin’ it to liberals from day one. I’m telling you guys: IT’S ALL THEY CARE ABOUT.
I will let Thudner ahem you.
This is what concerns me about OWS, and I’ve been flamed many times in the past for saying what I’m about to say or variations of it: on the one hand, fledgling movements often don’t have a single well-defined goal or grievance, but on the other, the left is notorious for not being able to settle on one. We can’t just have an anti-war rally; we’ve got to give the save the whales, wiccan vegetarians and legalize pot people each a few minutes on the stage, plus make time for some shitty poetry because the shitty poets can’t get anyone to sit still for it otherwise, and etc.
Now, it’s NOT that saving whales or decriminalizing pot aren’t worthy issues…it’s that they are side issues which often spring from the larger issue which is getting less attention because on the left, everyone is an attention-whore for THEIR issue and wants to have the stage.
There are people at OWS who are primarily upset by the economy, true, but there are others who are protesting environmental issues, the wars, and yes, I’m sure, for legalized pot. But the central issue is that our government is owned by an aristocracy of great wealth; our lives are circumscribed and dictated by the mandates of inhuman corporations who have more political clout than we, the voters, do; and our “democracy” has degenerated into a sham proceeding propped up by a corrupt media which is also owned by the aristocracy. THOSE are the issues central to every other fucking thing that pretty much anyone at OWS is upset about. Fix those and the others become possible to fix; don’t fix them and nothing will change.
I just hope they’ll start being cogent about it. It would certainly make the bullshit media claims about how “the protestors don’t even know what they’re angry about!” smell like what they are.
I shall raise an army of dicks and they shall call themselves teabaggers. What? That word also has a sexual meaning. O.K., how about Koch-Suckers?
Yeah…as soon as you see a Guy Fawkes mask, it’s all over.
do any of those kids even know what the Hammer and Sickle is anymore?
Sure, maaan. It’s a brand of baking soda.

Sometimes, the CNA gets them out of bed in order to hose the feces and urine off them.
Gee-roooooss.
Also, lol.
While over the last five years Americans have become slightly more conservative economically, they have swung even further in opposition to mingling religion and politics.
Thank God!!
A sound of blunder

I couldn’t agree more, Jennifer. How precious we all are that our movement is so pure and democratic-with-a-small-“d”; truly grassroots, leaderless and not organized. Well guess what, Sunshine? You’d better damn well get organized, ’cause your enemies most certainly are. You have picked a fight with the wealthiest, most powerful forces in the world, probably in history, and they will not hesitate to crush you. Are you up to it? Are you ready for the shit they are ready to throw at you if your special little uprising doesn’t just fly apart from its own anarchic centrifugal force like everyone expects it to? If you want to defeat this enemy, you will need to attract huge numbers of people who are willing to man the barricades with you because you sure as hell aren’t going to be able to outspend them.
Oh, and–sorry! so sorry! I don’t want to bruise anyone’s delicate liberal fee-fees–but you are not going to be able to attract those kind of numbers if you allow yourselves to be portrayed as a bunch of bongo-playing, dope-smoking, PETA-protesting, capitalism-hating commie-pinko-fag hippies! If you’re going to convince mainstream, sympathetic Americans like me to do things like refuse to pay their mortgages, tear up their credit-card bills or march en masse into these bank offices, rather than just milling around outside, you’ve got to give us a reason to identify with you.
if you allow yourselves to be portrayed as a bunch of bongo-playing, dope-smoking, PETA-protesting, capitalism-hating commie-pinko-fag hippies!
As if any of us has the means to stop that inevitable portrayal by the lamestream meejia.
.
I mean, James O’Queef could show up at an OWS protest tomorrow, full pimp regalia, and wipe his ass with a flag before setting it afire, and what would the cabloids report? “OWS protestor wipes ass with and burns U.S. flag!”
.
Of course that’s going to happen! Did you think the media were our friends? Or the Democrats? Of course not! So should we just give up and shrug, “Well, they’re gonna fuck us up the ass anyway, might as well assume the position!” Make no mistake about it, this is a war. You’ll get no help from the media, or from the Democrats for that matter. So far OWS has managed to attract some labor union support, but how many average Joe Sixpacks from Local 131 are going to be willing to put their jobs (not to mention their lives) when push comes to shoot for what they see as a bunch of naive, self-indulgent Gen-Xers ranting about Freeing Tibet?
O’Keefe would probably douse it in kerosene, light it up & then wipe his ass w/ it.
And I’d probably pay good money to see it.
Oh, God.
Says reams about her, don’t it?
Sure you’re right, Steerpike, but jeez, why all the bile? Every goddam movement has to start somewhere.
I suspect, soon enough, the nightsticks are gonna come out. Then we’ll find out who’s in this for the long haul.
Show up in fucking suits.
The problem with the stereotype of drum-playing hippies is that the people in Zuccotti Park are playing the drums. We listen to it in my office all day. I agree with the main cause of OWS and I probably agree with 95% of the secondary causes, but if they’re going to feed the media stereotype, they don’t get to complain about it.
Drumming hippies are really goddamned irritating. Unless you are the one drumming and then it’s awesome! Woo hoo!
Drumming hippies are really goddamned irritating. Unless you are the one drumming and then it’s awesome! Woo hoo!
They’re too far from my window for me to throw apple cores at them with any accuracy.
And when Joe Sixpack and Grammy Peoria finally realize who it is that’s fucking them up the ass, forget the hippie-punching and get out on the same streets, the movement will have undeniable and unignorable broad support. ‘Til then, the media is going to run with “Ew. Doesn’t that patchouli stink?” as their stock reportage, largely to keep Joe and Grams from signing on.
Suits for Wall Street.
(Shoes for the dead.)
Drumming hippies are really goddamned irritating.
Not half as irritating as a hippie with a banjo.

I was a burn-out.

“You guys seriously need to strike off on your own & rule the world. Conservatives have all of the money looks & talent in America right now. So why work amongst pigs in hollywood anymore? ”
Even at 2 in the morning Pookie Bouffant is beating people to the punch. I was JUST about to share that awesome quote…now I feel useless, impotent. Like my life has no meaning.
You guys seriously need to strike off on your own & rule the world.
Every now and then, I hear a conservative regular voter make a desperate plea to his Galtian heroes to do something like that.
Strangely, somehow, their Galtian heroes have never indulged them. Maybe someday they’ll start wondering why…
At least I beat someone, unless you typed that just to make me feel better.
Vocational school?
I guess that’s why I’ve never been employed at soldering anything (I had two years of vocational electronics) and why all my neighbors (master painter, tilesetter, roofer, and I don’t know what the grouchy contractor guy does, but…) are either closing their businesses or mostly working at home instead of at jobs?
lol
The free market has godlike powers to determine and reward quality. For some mysterious reason, these powers do not work when it comes to conservative pop culture artifacts, which require charitable donations. Surely this is proof, if proof is needed, that the many-taloned hand of Satan holds Hollywood in it’s grip. What other explanation could there be?
Okay, Steve Jobs put that apostrophe there, not me.
Then you’d be working the the fullest of your abilities. & what’s more, we the people would shower you with affection [Groupies, yay!], & massive amounts of wealth.
How very Randian.
Okay, Steve Jobs put that apostrophe there, not me.
SSSSHHHHH!
Nobody is supposed to know he’s a zombie yet.
I may be willing to support the Randians against the Leftist scourge, but calling them “conservative” would be inaccurate and possibly a lie.
Troodat. Conservatism has been an important part of the political landscap at every time and place in history. There is always a percentage of any polity which naturally resists change, and sees its role as one of counterbalancing the reckless impulse to remake society in fundamental ways. Conservatives wish to conserve what they regard as valuable societal norms and institutions in the face of what they see as radical and destructive change. You may not agree with them, but it can be argued that they serve as a valuable check on rampant upheaval in society.
Modern so-called “conservatives” are not interested in conserving venerable institutions and traditions; they are all about preserving their own unearned wealth, power and prestige at the expense of virtually everyone and everything else. The should be called ‘preservatives”. Like formaldehyde, they seek to maintain the appearance of vitality, concealing the reality of their own lack of animation or relevance in the living world.
Or maybe we should just call them “preserves”: They should be sealed in jars and smeared on toast.
Note to self: Think very carefully about accepting any invitations to brunch at Steerpike’s house.
these films were steps in the right direction that deserved our money.
I seem to recall Ayn writing paeans to charity. Or maybe it was peons for charity? I forget. Anyhoo, people didn’t support Howard Roark, failed architect, because they thought his buildings were awful crap but “steps in the right direction,” they thought he was a genius. He still failed, though, so they’ll have that to look forward to when they stop sucking.
God bless Gary Sinise, Patricia Heaton, Jon Voight, Angie Harmon and the other stars who have come out, gotten involved and led from the front. They are an inspiration, but fortunately for them, they had established resumés to help them weather the natural blacklisting faced by entertainment-industry conservatives.
gary sinise? jon voight? i would think that they would have enough money and power to like, um…make the conservative movies that the conservatives are so pining for?
i also think i know why they don’t…cuz, conservative movies suck…that and having to work with dbags like kevin williams and his crappy abilities…
Hollywood as a whole is a socialist institution
Has anyone told Sony and the other giant corporations that own the movie studios?
He still failed, though, so they’ll have that to look forward to when they stop sucking.
herein lies the problem…they can’t look forward…
To be fair, it’s also unlikely they’ll stop sucking, but we’re trying to give them some hope here. Because we’re nice that way.
The should be called ‘preservatives”.
Hilarious. I have been saying that for YEARS.
.
Yeah, I love that “Hollywood is socialist” line, when you consider that studios don’t do squat unless they think they can make a buck off it. They pay people big money to do demographic analysis and to figure out what will sell tickets. Capitalism at its best.
Good lord, she looks scarier than Arnold Alkon!
