I have found the Holy Grail….

Yes, the Swingers’ ‘Counting the Beat’ video. Oh yes.

Laugh it up, you Aussie and New Zealand guys, but I’ve been looking for this since it was played like once on MTV at 5AM, the year it came out.

It’s actually kind of disappointing, all considered. Here’s some more stuff:

Newtown Neurotics – ‘Living With Unemployment’

The Five Stairsteps – ‘Ooh Child’

The Vejtables – ‘I Still Love You’

Ohhhh no. Cast your jaundiced eye on VH1 Classic (if you have it) – they are running the entire first day of MTV as I type. There’s more than enough eye-bleeding videos on there for me, thanks. (If I could just figure out who these ‘April Wine’ guys are, and why they made so many videos, I would feel better.)

Nice gets Gavin. I wondered what Shrek was doing before he got into that acting gig. He was vocals and harp master for the Vejtables.

And for all of you still suffering from the Looney Toon thread I have the antidote:

Is this stuff “official” irritating videos, or are they safe for people who have had their very sanity nerves frayed by the recent madness?

Disappointing? We have NEVER been the same since you sent us that wanktastic tune. And nobody even cared.

Wank meaning we thing the song is about wanking, and gloriously so.

OMG i wish I had a dish now! That VH1 thing sounds like treasure.

April Wine is only the second most fantastic band from Canadia, is all!

Actually, Shrek’s “performance” seems limited to air harp on that clip. Being paid to play un-plugged electric guitars and lip synch to one’s own post-British invasion single is not a very challenging gig. Yet somehow none of them — with the exception of drummer and lead singer Jan Errico — seem entirely willing to participate in the lip synching part of the job. Maybe they thought shaking their Beatle haircuts was more important…

That harp player from the Vejtables has no neck. And the girl singer/drummer’s hair is so lacquered it doesn’t even move when she swings her head. The Beatles dos are fabu, though.

I hope this does not mean that the truce in the YouTube Wars is inoperative.

Thank you, Sir Retardo!

Clearly, the girl singer/drummer is a bobble head doll which is why her hair doesn’t move.

Dude, if you were a senior in high school in 1980 and lived within broadcast reach of CHOM-FM in Montreal, you knew exactly who April Wine were.

They were the openers for Loverboy at the Forum, of course.

RAWWWWWWK.

Following, of course, Chilliwack. Or is it Saga?

Yeah, that’s a good version, the bass could use a touch of fuzz to get that Wetton sound though. Nice to see the guitarist use the correct Black Beauty Les Paul. But what’s up with their name being pixalated out on their backdrop?

April Wine had the great song “If you see Kay.”

I thought it was another band’s banner that they were playing in front of…

Yeah, sure, “Red” is easy.

Let’s see the little fuckers try to do “Starless.”

That Five Stairsteps clip was macked out!

Well, you non-Aussies have at least been spared seeing this iconic new wave track used as backing music for a K-Mart ad.

[…] In retrospect, it’s sort of a Saints, echt-AC/DC, Radio Birdman thing. Nice! Also in retrospect, these Antipodean guys were all about 1) The downmarket vintage guitar, and 2) The ’30s-cut suit, and doing little ironico-masculine pantomimes in them (viz. Split Enz and all subsidiary entities). […]
