We’re Doomed
Folks, Scott Brown’s victory has sent a clear message that not one single American voter supports a progressive agenda. Let’s face it — it’s over. The Dems are not going to be able to salvage a single thing out of this.
As if they ever were.
We might as well quit trying. Look, Roy thinks he’s joking with this headline over at the Village Voice:
Scott Brown Wins Mass. Race, Giving GOP 41-59 Majority in the Senate
LOL etc., but guess what. It’s not a joke. It’s true. The Republicans own us. We may still technically have the presidency, large majorities in both houses of Congress and more governors, but really, the endgame in this particular political drama is all but written in stone.
And the message for any sane person is: Give up. Stop thinking it will ever get better. It will only get worse forever and ever and ever.
Let’s use a sports analogy. Those totally suck, but things are so hopeless that it’s pointless to try to create some wittier, more insightful way of analyzing the situation.
Anyway, imagine you are a football team that is up by three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. That’s the Dems in January of last year. Now imagine that the opposing team cuts your lead to let’s say 10 points* with about four minutes to play and they have the ball. That’s us right now.
As any fan of football knows, this is the point in the game where you pull your starters and just give up, because the team with the ball is going to score anyway and why bother even trying? And after they score again to cut your lead to just three, they’ll just get the ball back and score a field goal and then it’ll be overtime and you’re just going to lose the coin toss for possession and then you’ll lose the game. And your first-round draft pick next year is going to be the one who breaks his leg or gets busted for drugs, so that’s not worth looking forward to either.
So it’s useless to try to do anything about it. And the same is true of life and definitely of politics. Some people are saying we should call our representatives and keep the pressure on for health care reform or whatever, but that’s just stupid.
If anything, we should be calling our representative to tell them that we’re probably not going to vote at all next time regardless of what they do, but if we vote it will probably be for them because they’ve got name recognition and in a few months we’re going to forget what this phone call was about anyway.
That would be both honest and polite and also true. Then again, why bother calling them at all? It’s not going to have any effect on what happens either way. If anything, it’ll probably make things worse.
*In this example, the other team scored three field goals and a safety.
Brad adds: I actually laughed my ass off when I read this email to Marshall today:
The worst is that I can’t help but feel like the main emotion people in the caucus are feeling is relief at this turn of events. Now they have a ready excuse for not getting anything done.
My sports analogy: “OK, Team Blue, our first-down play didn’t go anywhere and I have no confidence in our ability to do anything on 2nd and 3rd, so… let’s punt! Go team!”
And just remember D, it’s down the tracks, not cross and double back.
Yep, it’s me. I’ve been gone for a very long time, and I’d pretty much given up this site as a bad habit, but I just had to come back and drink your sweet, sweet tears.
Ah, how delicious they are!
Liberals, did you not watch Fox News last night? They had a panel of Mass voters, and when asked why they voted for Brown, all of those who did so – ALL OF THEM – said it had to do with the health care bill being jammed down our throats.
Greta Van Sustren had a wonderful piece where she tracked support for Brown against all the revelations of shady dealings in the Senate. The Louisiana bribe was revealed, and Brown went up. The Nebraska bribe was revealed, and again Brown went up. The union bribe came out, and Brown went over the top.
Ah, well, you liberals won’t learn from this. It’s been a delightful day, reading and listening to your suffering. Keep it up!
Look, I know this is going to reset your paranoia about all the posters you think are me. As usual, you are outsmarting yourselves, and I really feel bad about stirring the pot again – it will take months to settle down. But I can’t help it today!
Oh, and where is Teh Funny?
And that goes for all the rest of you too. Yeah, let’s all just give up because some nutjob in Massachusetts became Senator. Or Representative. Whatever the fuck he was, I wasn’t really paying attention. Bring on the razors.
Holy God, we ARE doomed! SPORTS ANALOGIES, NOOOOOOOOOO!
This analogy would work if you had players on your side who were too lazy to go out and actually play the game.
Oh, Fox News said that, did they? Well, I am utterly surprised. Anything from Rasmussen? Oh, or commentary from the New York Post? Say, what’s the latest word from WorldNetDaily?
Conservative mouthpiece says conservative shit! What’re the FUCKING ODDS.
This analogy would work if you had players on your side who were too lazy to go out and actually play the game.
I believe that’s who he’s talking to with regard to giving the fuck up.
Well, I called my senator today to say I would like to see the Senate change its rules.
From the START of the game. Is what I meant.
Liberals are always jamming something down my throat.
I have guns and drugs right? Everything’s cool.
I want Stickum! Bring it back!
Corisone shots for Broder! Woo-hoo fuck yeah GO VILLAGERS!
Also, I’d rather pretend I’m an airplane. I get to wave my arms out and make flight noises as I run around. It’s a lot more fun than pretending to be a football team.
Liberals, did you not watch Fox News last night?
…
They had a panel of Mass voters, and when asked why they voted for Brown, all of those who did so – ALL OF THEM – said it had to do with the health care bill being jammed down our throats.
Because Fox News has NEVER had problems with erroneous sampling or intentionally misleading its viewers. Remember that tea party reporter who got the crowd energized just so she could get a picture of an energized crowd? Ah, good times, man, good times.
PS Shitty health care that you can’t afford is the third rail of American politics.
Given I thought the third rail was the defense budget, we’ve got a lot of third rails in American politics.
Okay, imagine you’re a giant blob of reeking protoplasm expanding your mass by consuming all organic matter.
Just thinking out loud.
anyone taking odds on the Fox Massachusetts voters being shill picked up off the streets? And/or Not voting at all.
Speaking of which, where is our trolly from? Not Mass, I will bet. Maybe he will move there, though, what with the pickup-drivin senator and gay marriage and all.
This post may be ironic, I’m not sure, but either way it’s actually quite true. The Republicans will always win. Evil people prosper over the likes of you and me, always. Not because Scott Brown won. Hell, it doesn’t matter what the makeup of either house is. They’re getting what they want now and they’re fully nine seats down. Because over much of the past two decades they’ve made all their opposition into either carbon copies of themselves or pussies who won’t fight back because, against all reason, they think that this will “maximise their voter base”.
Yes, they’re not in power, but how are they not getting everything they want anyway? Health care is fucked forever, and I mean forever, America will never have a fair system this side of the Apocalypse. Gitmo’s still open. Afghanistan got its own surge. The only thing they haven’t managed is a brand new war, and we’ll have one of those in Yemen by the end of the year. Even when they lose, they win. They always win. American civilisation will never change until it finally collapses altogether, and the coyote just isn’t looking down.
Liberals, did you not watch Fox News last night?
Imagine you’re a liberal. You probably got laid last night.
Jack, aren’t you dead?
S McG: why would you imagine you’re Jonah?
Football? How the hell do you play football when one team doesn’t like to be touched?
Is it any wonder I’m depressed?
Liberals, did you not watch Fox News last night? They had a
panelcarefully handpicked sample of Mass voters, and when asked why they voted for Brown, all of those who did so – ALL OF THEM – saidit had to do with the health care bill being jammed down our throats.the prepared Fox talking point.Fixed for great justice.
Anyway, imagine you are a football team
Wait, I have to be everybody? I weigh 110 lbs! How am I winning? Obviously God loves me best therefore I am guaranteed to win so I can ignore any actual strategy, gameplay, or whatnot. THE END.
There’s nothing sadder then watching romantics and idealists being exposed to the harsh facts of American politics. It’s always the same song and dance “This is the worst thing ever! I’m quitting, boo hoo hoo, where are my sackcloth and ashes, I need them to rend!”.
I mean, cripes, I thought I was depressed about the state of American politics, but every damn electoral cycle it’s some thing or the other that proves we’re on the final walk to the chair.
tigrismus: Well, if there’s anything I’ve learned from sports movies, the plucky underdog with a heart of gold and comedic side-players always wins out over the harsh, regimented and brutalistic team that doesn’t play by the rules and is usually headed by a right-wing actor.
Of course, those are movies, but D. didn’t specify which reality we had to pretend our football team belonged in.
OOh. Now do it as a croquet match.
Things are totally awful for Democrats now that we have one more Senator in the Senate than we did a year ago. This is proof that we need to step back, stop scaring Americans with our big reforms, and work more with Republicans who will never, ever, ever, ever, ever vote for anything that’s not 100% a Republican-generated piece of legislation.
For us under Obama to have undergone the humiliating failure of having added another Senator to our roster since a year ago basically is the end of liberal politics and Real America has spoke out for Sarah Palin.
Not without the donkey and the flubber.
And your first-round draft pick next year is going to be the one who breaks his leg or gets busted for drugs, so that’s not worth looking forward to either.
In the Democrats’ case, the first round draft pick drives under the influence with the starting and second-string quarterbacks in the car, and crashes into a bridge abutment.
the plucky underdog with a heart of gold and comedic side-players always wins out
I don’t believe this takes the zombies into account.
That’s a different genre of sports movie.
Teabaggers might be dumb fucking assholes, but you can’t argue with their methods. Being loud and clear about what you want seems to be working better than presenting ideas in a cogent, intelligent manner. Politicians just seem to respond to the loudmouthed boneheads out there and ignore the rest. Maybe we need to buy a news channel like theirs. That way when a few lefties say something crazy or hint at committing violence, we will have a channel who will call them “concerned citizens” instead of the ignorant malcontents they truly are.
I would HOPE the zombies are on my side: I’M FUCKING PLUCKY AS HELL AND HAVE A HEART OF GOLD GODDAMMIT.
And your first-round draft pick next year is going to be the one who breaks his leg or gets busted for drugs, so that’s not worth looking forward to either.
Scott “my daughters are on the meat market” Brown is SO going to be this guy, too.
Word up. Still on the motherfuckin’ boat with Ezra and Meggers but just wanted to say I’m motherfucking glad you cuntmuffins finally understand your fuckin’ role in the new administration. Your analogy is a thing of fucking beauty–any shitbird pinko faggot liberal to the left of Nixon has about as much to do with calling the plays as some asswipe cheering his lungs out from the stands has in an NFL game. All you assholes are really supposed to do is buy the tickets, wear our fucking ass-ugly merchandise, and root root root for the hometeam. You got something else to say? Too fuckin’ bad. Fuck you.
“There’s nothing sadder then watching romantics and idealists being exposed to the harsh facts of American politics. It’s always the same song and dance ‘This is the worst thing ever! I’m quitting, boo hoo hoo, where are my sackcloth and ashes, I need them to rend!’.”
Yeppers. Welcome to the Democratic Party In Action. Every four years the Fresh Voice is lauded because it is…well, *Fresh.* Gangs of young idealists swarm to it, insanely unrealistic beliefs are constructed around it (“Vote for Fresh Voice and we’ll all live forever!”), quickly followed by the OMG, THE SCALES HAVE FALLEN FROM MY EYES moment as innocence, wonderful, pure, sweet innocence is betrayed by, like, real life an’ stuff.
Every. Four. Years. Like clockwork. We don’t know who Fresh Voice will be in 2012, but he will be there, wrapped in claims–no, absolute certainties–that He Will Turn Things Around, that A New Age Has Dawned, that We Will All Live Forever…
Rinse, wash, repeat.
P.S. Wasn’t there a time, back when the Earth’s crust was still warm and dinosaurs majestically roamed the land, when Democrats used to elect people for pragmatic reasons as opposed to fantasies about their candidates’ abilities to provide magical unicorns? I mean, I’m pretty sure LBJ didn’t score very highly with the magical unicorn crowd…
I got that not-so-fresh feeling from Kerry and Gore and Clinton and Mondale and Carter.
. Being loud and clear about what you want seems to be working better
However, analysis of their quotes and signage and speeches seems to indicate that they are just being loud.
Admittedly, that seems to be effective when running against Democrats like Coakley.
’M FUCKING PLUCKY AS HELL AND HAVE A HEART OF GOLD GODDAMMIT
and a mouth like a sailor.
when Democrats used to elect people for pragmatic reasons as opposed to fantasies about their candidates’ abilities to provide magical unicorns
i doubt it
and remember, some of the most progressive and effective presidents, teddy, truman and lbj, acceded to the office through much accidentalness and without ponies
as for me personally, everything is pretty much as i expected it would be when i voted for him so meh
“There’s nothing sadder then watching romantics
Yeah, I hated “What I Like About You” too….
that way when a few lefties say something crazy or hint at committing violence, we will have a channel who will call them “concerned citizens” instead of the ignorant malcontents they truly are.
In what universe would that happen? This isn’t a right versus left struggle after all. This has become a struggle between the ruling class and the ruled -and we’re losing. To use an analogy, if this were a croquet match, the Ruling Class would be aiming for the last hoop while we searched back by the baulk for both our mallet (which they would be renting to us), and our ball (which they would have hidden in a privet hedge at the far side of the neighbors garden).
News organizations serve their purpose, which is to make money at any cost. The minute that a channel went further than Rachel Maddow’s intellectual kveching or Keith Olbermann’s easily-discounted grandstanding, it would stop serving the interests of the wealthy, and you’d see the programming change pretty quick.
God this Massachusetts thing has me on edge. I need a Xanex.
The early Fucking Plucky cartoons were the best, before Shitty Sidekick came along.
as for me personally, everything is pretty much as i expected it would be when i voted for him so meh
zombie dittoes.
Being loud and clear about
and stupid. don’t forget the stupid part
How is this a stunning defeat for liberals, but whatshisface-didn’tliveinthedistrict losing in Hadn’telectedaDemocratsinceMagnaCarta-NY was not a repudiation of the tea party fuckwits?
Could I pretend to be a train, and the Repugs have put a straw man on tracks in front of me and called it “America”. Even tho I know quite well it is a straw-man, just straw, I’d better stop with a mighty screeching and squealing of brakes, and maybe even derail myself.
Chooo Chooo!
“The authentic”: Manure! Manure for sale! Git yer steamin’ hot manure right here!”
Blaarrrrt! “Thank you sir, please come again!”
How is this a stunning defeat for liberals, but whatshisface-didn’tliveinthedistrict losing in Hadn’telectedaDemocratsinceMagnaCarta-NY was not a repudiation of the tea party fuckwits?
Because shut up, that’s why.
Yeah. But in the summer of ’92, Clinton/Gore seemed not to have passed their best-by date yet. Of course, I was much younger then and I’m sure this is central to someone’s point.
“as for me personally, everything is pretty much as i expected it would be when i voted for him so meh”
I like to think that I’m too old to fall for the Unicorns & Ponies bit but I was truly hoping that, with control of the Executive and both houses of Congress, the Democrats would, y’know, GROW A FUCKING SPINE and move through some of the agenda they, y’know, ran on.
Guess I’m just gullible that way.
I’m certainly going to call all of my Congress-persons and the Office of the President and let them know I want them to fucking do something. It may not achieve anything but it will at least make me feel better.
And seriously, how is this all that odd for Mass? This guy’s like Romney Jr.,i.e. yet another empty suit pretty boy of the sort we’ve shown a willingness to vote for time and again, for some reason.
I’m not sure I ever really had that moment where the scales fell from my eyes. I suppose it could come from being born during the Reagan administration, and therefore never having begun with hope at all, but even when in elementary school, and we were having a mock-election between Bush/Clinton/Perot, I selected Clinton because a) my parents were going to vote for him, b) Republicans were already awful by my public-primary school level of logic and analysis, and c) Perot was a crazy Texan midget.
So by age 9, I was already making my choices based on party-affiliation and the least-awful candidate. Things have not changed greatly by the 21st century when I was legally allowed to vote.
I hoped that Obama would at least stop the kidnapping and torture, and maybe even prosecute the treasonous actions of Cheney. Or at least make them public.
With all disrespect to the satiric intent of this site, and the shortersthat keep me coming back for less every day, and with all due acks to the clear-eyed realists among us (I kill unicorns on site):
Barring the Second Coming of Christ with Beelzebub on His Sidecar, no effective national political organisation would ever in a million years have lost this byelection.
The prosecution rests.
barack voted for telecom immunity before the election, so you had to know right there that he would be at least as conservative as any harvard law review president
and the wingnuts scream forever, so you can expect blazing bullshit as far as the eye can see with any non republican president
and multinational corporations own the nuts of all politicians, including each of the 535 members of congress individually and in perpetuity world without end amen
so this has got to be bad for ponies as a rule
I hoped he’d be the first black President. I was largely successful in meeting my hopes.
If the Democrats had any balls, which we know they don’t, they’d put the health care plan up for a vote and if the Republicans tried to stall it, threaten to add the “public option” back in and go nuclear on filibuster. Better still, don’t even bother putting the current piece of crap up for a vote and just redo it with a public option. As I mentioned above, though, the Democrats have no balls and Obama’s absurd and rather delusional belief that he is going to work with Republicans means that nothing will be accomplished and Obama is a likely one-termer. After he said he’s putting more troops in Afghanistan, it’s really hard for me to care.
Ever think maybe we have this coming? Americans have become (or perhaps always have been) such utter scumbags that we deserve to be ruled by Republicans.
Let’s go drop some more bombs on some brown people – that always makes us feel better, right?
i say put the public option back in and wait out the filibuster
i’ve got popcorn
I think ya just wear sackcloth and ashes….maybe rend the garments first, then put on the sackcloth and ashes. It’s a bitch to rend sackcloth. Trust me on this.
insanely unrealistic beliefs are constructed around it
I didn’t think ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, closing Gitmo and stopping the torture were insanely unrealistic at the time.
Seems a little, well, insane, that this is how things have turned out.
And I’m sure the same could be said for those who figured ending the wars iin Vietnam and Korea, putting a stop to all the CIA Eastern Bloc torture camps, which as you can probably guess would also invovle stopping torture, as well as putting a stop to our support of right-wing death squads in third-world nations all seemed insanely unrealistic at the time…
But surely we accomplished some of those… eventually. Right?
I mean, it only took us a couple of centuries to say “our bad” to the American Indians, and “sorry about that putting you in camps” to the Japanese-Americans only took us half that! So clearly if Obama hasn’t pulled off the hat trick of closing the books on all the recent awful shit America has done within a year, he’s a complete failure and I’m not being absolutely unrealistic.
To put it another way, it took George Bush at least five years to really and truly fuck our country up. Obama warrants at least more than 20% of that time frame to try and fix some of it.
Obama doesn’t have to fix the country, his job is to LEAD others, us, in fixing things.
And we’re awfully fucking lazy. So one year wasn’t going to do it.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100121/ap_on_bi_ge/us_health_care_overhaul
YOU WANKERS!!!
WHO THE HELL spends a half a year offering compromise after compromise after compromise to the GOP while getting absolutely nothing for it in return, agrees to sacrifice everything about their position that makes it a liberal position, and then conclude that even the illiberal bill needs to be auctioned off?
I don’t get it. You’ve had thirty years to observe the conservative movement in action. They want, we give, and then they’re happy. They want more, we give more, and then they’re happy. They want it all, we give it all and then they’re happy.
Jesus tap-dancing Christ on a cracker, even France and Britain got the message after selling off Austria, then Czechoslovakia, then Poland that they were being played for suckers and had better get off their butts and do something or they’d wake up singing the Horst Wessel Lied. How long is it going to take before we hit Poland? Are we going to have to compromise all the way to a Presidential impeachment or a Social Security demolition plan before we finally find our spine again? And when in name of God’s balls are we finally going to get it through our heads that we should have stopped talking at Austria, not Poland?
his job is to LEAD others
you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him ignore the pressure from big business lobbyists
Okay, imagine you’re a giant blob of reeking protoplasm expanding your mass by consuming all organic matter.
TETSUO!
It would be nice to see the Democrats fight for anything at any point.
I’ve been thinking for some time that Obama is just a coward. He’s got no heart, in the way boxers talk about it. Whatever the comparisons with Clinton, he drew the line at the 1995 budget fight, and faced down Gingrich at the highest stakes imaginable. Right now I see no sign of Obama being capable of such a thing.
Funny story, I still think to this day that he’s yelling CANADA.
illiberal bill
you know, the senate/house bills as they now stand would make it illegal for insurance companies to deny people insurance because of pre-existing conditions, or to drop somebody from coverage, by 2014 at the latest
that would be a fundamental restriction on the ability of insurance companies to fuck with people, and a Very Good Thing
i’m fucking tired of people pissing on obama because he didn’t get more
I’M FUCKING PLUCKY
Who’s Plucky? Is he/she/it a regular here?
Well, Clinton sacrificed universal health care too. I can only hope that when the other side goes on the offensive, Obama will at last find his own balls and spine and put them to use instead of handing them over to the GOP for incineration.
Ironic that the Repubs may not have been wrong about Democratic politicians being chickens after all. It doesn’t translate to weakness in foreign policy (because the conservatives are strong enough to bully him away from that), but in domestic policy, it does seem to translate into a never-ending series of Munich conferences.
Want to know how this ends? Read DMZ.
The voices on the radio tell me this was a referendum on Health Care Reform and the game is now over. The 110,000 more voters Brown had of the 2.2 million voters decided what the rest of us can have. It’s out of our hands, what can we do?
I can’t wait for tomorrow’s fresh sluice of opinionation to wash over us. It’s gonna be good and foetid. All that pre-digested celebratory corporate foie gras will be poured in to the media hopper and spread nationwide, gently covering the discourse with the viscous slime of right-thinking corporatists. Pus colored swill awaits us all!
“i’m fucking tired of people pissing on obama because he didn’t get more”
Compared to what the House bill was, the Senate version is clearly far less liberal. But at least it’s something, and I’d gotten used to the idea, but am now losing my mind at the notion that he’s going to start auctioning that one off as well.
Pus colored swill awaits us all!
I doubt it. That sounds like hospital food, and most of us soon won’t be able to bribe the concierges to let us into the hosptials.
i’m fucking tired of people pissing on obama because he didn’t get more
Right, well if he actually shows some fight and puts something on the line to keep what he already got, and get it enacted, I’ll be impressed. The noises I’m hearing are about going back to the well of good will that is the Republican senate caucus and seeing what it will take to get 1 of them on board.
Quoth the Preznit:
“Here’s one thing I know and I just want to make sure that this is off the table. The Senate certainly shouldn’t try to jam anything through until Scott Brown is seated,” Obama said. “People in Massachusetts spoke. He’s got to be part of that process.”
Fuck you, Barack. Ya fuckin coward.
thanks for being onboard voltaire. and fuck everybody else with a fucking rusty goddamn chainsaw. we’re runnin’ this shit now and all you haters can just piss off. the progressive agenda has fuck all to do with the democratic party, by the way, you pissants.
For us under Obama to have undergone the humiliating failure of having added another Senator to our roster since a year ago basically is the end of liberal politics and Real America has spoke out for Sarah Palin.
According to YOUR Senate President, with 41 votes, the Republicans now run the place; as confirmed today by the Backwards Triangulator in Chief when he was polishing President Snowe’s boots … again.
Yeah, it might even be admirable that the Democratic party were such great respecters of the democratic process in delaying until Brown is seated if they had shown any kind of fight over the absurd and preposterous campaign by Norm Coleman and the NRSC to keep Franken out of the Senate as long as possible.
Consistency being the hobgoblin of people who can tell the difference between principle and political Stockholm syndrome.
As a Gen Xer, I’d like to personally thank the Baby Boomers and Grey Panthers for promising us a nation we could work hard and succeed in, while simultaneously fucking the whole thing up so hard with their self-centered bullshit that we’re left with the smouldering ashes of a once-less-mediocre democracy and a nickel in our 401Ks.
Rot in hell, all of ya.
the Baby Boomers and Grey Panthers
And what with the plastic surgery, you can’t even make a decent stew out of them.
thanks for being onboard voltaire
i’m going to get out my magic fairy powder and give obama a magic vote wand that will make it possible for him to just talk to all the 535 senators and congressmen and talk to them, and then get on teevee and make some speeches, and SHAZZAM! – he will be able to get restrictions passed on the insurance industry that teddy roosevelt, fdr, truman, kennedy, and lbj were never able to get close to
it’s just that simple – see?
If you believed any of the shit you were promised by America’s Con Men, no matter what generation, don’t blame them, suckah.
If you believed any of the shit you were promised by America’s Con Men, no matter what generation, don’t blame them, suckah.
You mean I can’t make money sawing Manhattan in two?
i’m going to get out my magic fairy powder…
Look, I hate to kick a man when he’s down… No actually I don’t – that’s the best time to kick someone.
Magical fairy dust, magic vote wand, convincing extra votes – THAT’S BEEN THE FUCKING PROBLEM SINCE AUGUST. You don’t like folks badmouthing the Big O, it ain’t his fault that Lieberdork is a fucking traitor. WELL THEN WHAT THE FUCK WAS THE LAST FIVE MONTHS ABOUT??!?!
One “Anonymous” comments:
Cockburn also sez:
Yeah, so, like, a little perspective here, maybe.
We are all doomed, however. No questioning that.
COCKBURN!
You missed a few details in your football analogy.
You left out then fact that half of our team has been bought off by gamblers to throw the game. You also neglected to point out that most of the other side’s points were made because our head coach thought that playing hard and whupping ass would be mean, so he allowed the other team to score those points in the interest of fairness. You also forgot that our team agreed that we’d have to win by at least 20 points or it wouldn’t count.
Shit, I’m not saying to give up. Never give up. But lets not pretend that we can still win this in any meaningful sense. Our team set out to lose, and it has succeeded.
Anyways, first step in dealing with grief is to find someone worse off than you are and point and laugh until it feels better. On that note, wasn’t there some sort of National Day of Strike scheduled for today?
“The worst is that I can’t help but feel like the main emotion people in the caucus are feeling is relief at this turn of events. Now they have a ready excuse for not getting anything done.”
Bingo. Now they can get back to sucking up to corporate lobbyists without having to risk antagonizing them.
National Day of Strike
Brought to us by people previously obsessed with balls. You think they’d take a swing once in a while.
The analogy stinks. We not on the fields; we’re in the stands. The Senate is the home team. They keep running over tackle and getting stuffed. We’ve been screaming at them for three and a half quarters to DO SOMETHING ELSE
FYWP for publishing when I WASN’T DONE YET.
The worst is that I can’t help but feel like the main emotion people in the caucus are feeling is relief at this turn of events. Now they have a ready excuse for not getting anything done.
That seems to be a fair assessment.
Voltaire:
i’m going to get out my magic fairy powder and give obama a magic vote wand that will make it possible for him to just talk to all the 535 senators and congressmen and talk to them, […]
This is too neat a dodge. No, Obama doesn’t have constitutional authority to order members of congress to do anything, but he does wield a number of significant sticks that can be used to influence their decisions:
1) He’s leader of the Democratic party. He can make funding happen, or not happen. The reason you never hear shit from Kaine is that he takes orders from Obama.
2) Big party donors will generally take cues from Obama. “Don’t give anything to lieberman or I’ll ignore all your requests and ensure no one you’ve ever met is ever hired for a federal job” is pretty effective in shutting wallets.
3) He has the biggest microphone in the world. He can ask for, and get, time on all major networks in prime fucking time to blather about whatever. No member of Congress could ever compete with him on this.
4) He’s still personally quite popular and if he stages a pile of rallies in someone’s home state, people will come to see and listen.
5) He has what is possibly history’s biggest email list of activists and OFA who could be mobilized for any number of reasons beyond “please give money” which is all he’s used the list for so far.
It’s possible he could use all of these and still lose, as Bush did when barnstorming for SS privitization in 2005, but Obama has tried none of it, so he doesn’t get a pass from me as the helpless victim of mean old congress.
…to DO SOMETHING ELSE but the coaching staff is sticking with the same futile game plan.
I’m willing to keep yelling, and even to try yelling louder, but to hope for a different result seems forlorn.
And besides, we’re not up 21 points. We’re an NFL team that’s losing by three points to a bunch of neighborhood kids with short attention spans.
Seriously, after the Dems just lost a special election, I have to write them again to remind them of my genius advice to enact something popular? And hope they don’t ignore me and everyone else like me for just this once?
Fine. Fucking fine. But I reserve the inalienable right to bitch about having to do it, and the right to tell anyone who gives me grief about it to shut the fuck up.
HA HA! You leftists don’t know what to do! Your pain makes me hungry! I feed on your misery and we are even more energized to take back USA for Palin in 2012 if not before we will IMPEACH THE USURPER. No more poverty pimping, funding the unfit, class war and hate for free enterprise and God. The heartland is back in charge and you can SUCK IT!
Ok kids, I haven’t read all the comments because, frankly, I’m quite turned off by the “oh boo-hoo you aren’t going to get your PONIES” bullshit.
Look, the Brown victory means nothing. At least it would in a sane country where huge majorities make the rules. As I said on one of the previous threads, who would buy from a salesman whose pitch is, “We can’t deliver even under the most optimal conditions, buy from us!!!”
Which is exactly the bag of shit the Democrats are trying to sell. “Oh, poor pitiful us, even when we outnumber them 59 – 41, we can’t get anything done!” Really? Then you need to go out of fucking business, because you have nothing to offer.
What’s galling about the Brown victory is that it IS such a minor setback, or would be, IF THE DEMOCRATS WEREN’T HELL BENT ON MAKING IT A ROUT – against themselves. Fuck these pussies.
And for those who are suggesting openly or hinting that anyone who says “I’m not voting for a bunch of pussies who won’t get anything done even when they control the field (see, I worked in your sports analogy)” are purity trolls, whiny crybabies, etc, FUCK YOU TOO. Instead of your sanctimonious I-told-you-sos, try explaining why anyone should ever vote for a fucking Democrat again if they throw in the towel on this. What is the point? So they can get nice pension benefits instead of the crazy men? Fuck that noise. If they can’t get their shit together, every one of these worthless sacks of shit needs to be run out of office. And don’t give me that “but…but…but then the CRAZY REPUBLICANS will turn the country into a smoking crater!!!” Yeah, well, who’s the magic pony believer now? They’re going to do that anyway; the most the Democrats will commit to is halting the slide whenever they serve their occasional conservatorship role – they don’t make fucking attempt ONE to reverse the situation. Delaying the smoking crater isn’t a very compelling reason to support them either, because all the way to the bottom it’s sucking harder and harder all the way. Enjoy the time you have – don’t waste the few minutes that would be required to ever vote for one of these feckless fuckers again.
America has a history of accepting change only when it has to. Reconstruction was a failure, so civil rights had to wait 100 years. We’ve only known about global warming for 30 years, so don’t expect any action on that soon. Mayor Bloomy actually got some shit done by banning smoking in restaurants and mandating that residents in city hospitals learn how to do shmashmortions. We’ll have to wait for the Republic to collapse before any mainstream politician suggests we go to single-payer healthcare or full federal scholarships for students who get accepted to 4-year undergraduate programs (I mean, the Czech Republic is one of only 17 countries to do so….golly).
C-3PO is correct.
Another unicorn chaser? The comment thread on the edroso Village Voice post.
Also Mr. Edroso, I notice that there is a mispeelnig in the title of your column. It should read Running Scared.
My friend and I had a saying back in college: Always Surrender! Even when winning, surrender immediately — politely hand the other team the ball. Run it in for them if possible. That way, the punishment may not be as bad for you after you (inevitably) lose.
I think this pretty much sums up everyone’s feelings, right? I’m glad you’ve all finally come around to our way of thinking.
haha?
I respect your opinion and understand what it’s based on, Jennifer.
But for me and a lot of other liberal voters, it comes down to this; if the smoking crater thingy’s going to happen anyway, we at least want to make sure that we’ve thrown something against the coming storm, no matter how puny it may be. We’re not politicians, we don’t work with politicians, we’re not pundits, we’re not donors; we’re just citizens. Our vote is all we’ve got.
Chris – and your vote accomplishes what, exactly?
wasn’t there some sort of National Day of Strike scheduled for today?
I think my butt may have become grafted to the sofa, that’s got to count for something.
Ask me again the next time someone tries to strangle Medicare or privatize Social Security – it was the Democrats who stopped that in 2004. They’re not in any state to move the country forward, but if they can keep it from moving back, that’s good enough for me. It’s certainly good enough for my grandmother who needs that welfare state, however anemic, to go on living.
I follow foreign policy pretty closely, so here’s another example; in Iraq, starting in 2007, the U.S. military’s profile was switched for the first time from “killing hajjis” to “protecting civilians,” Donald Rumsfeld’s “against all enemies” mantra was replaced with Robert Gates’ “don’t make more enemies than you can afford,” and we extended live-and-let-live offers for the first time to ordinary Iraqi guerrillas who’d been fighting us for years, which was the crucial thing in winding the war down. Why did all that happen and why Iraq noticeably less bloody now than it was four years ago?
Because we elected a Democratic Congress in 2006. Now they, themselves, did jack shit with regards to Iraq. But their election scared Bush just enough that he thought “shit, the people are pissed – maybe I should try to salvage this while I still can,” which led to him ousting Rumsfeld, replacing him with a professional, and the improvements that have happened since then. The current situation in Iraq is far worse than if we’d never invaded; but it’s also far better than if we’d had an all-Republican government re-confirmed in 2006 and 2008.
As small as the contributions of my vote may be, they’re enough for me.
And will Blue Cross pay? I THINK NOT.
I saw some idiot fucking imbecile woman from Mass saying, “I voted for Scott Brown because “we need to take many years to reform health care… to get it right…” God help me, I’m headed to Canada, fuck this place…let it go down with the Thousand Year Reich…later folks…
…
P.S. Palin for President!!!!!!!!
Besides a few enclaves in and around the western part of Boston and everything west of the Quabbin the state a shithole full of angry white jocks, the “I got mine and fuck you crowd”.
Being a Fifth Generation Masshole, I can attest this drivel is dribble.
The antipathy to the Kennedys in Mass. is real and is very complex. Some of it is just angry white jocks who say “I’ve got mine, so fuck you.” Some of it is blatant and underlying racism, cuz Ted championed poor people in Mass, ie. darkies. Some of it is the concept of it being “Ted Kennedy’s Senate Seat” and all his relatives’ as if it were a Duchy of Saxony, which the Boston Globe has always helped push by trying to turn them into Royalty to sell color supplements. Some of it is just typical Yankee stubbornness about not wanting to be told who you “will” vote for. And some is that the Democratically-controlled Mass. Legislature is one of the most profoundly corrupt and backward festering masses of patronage on the Planet, thus making a vote for a Republican a protest vote against the whole rotten, entrenched system.
But angry white jocks does account for at least a third of it.
Anybody here remember the last time something like Brown happened? Y’know — the guy before Senator Franken of Minnesota?
That one was named Norm Coleman and nobody thought he had a snowball’s chance in hell of winning what used to be Paul Wellstone’s safe, liberal Democratic seat.
Until the Powers That Be decided it’d be just peachy to tap Mondale as the replacement, and then acted as if his election was all but a done deal. The guy best and last remembered not as a former VP but as the repeat loser, first of the 2nd Carter term and then of his own abysmal 1984 bid against Reagan.
Anyway, the DNC has repeatedly and consistently mis-read the mood of the voters — who will, quite often, vote to throw the perceived bums out. Even if it’s not exactly a wise choice.
And for those who are suggesting openly or hinting that anyone who says “I’m not voting for a bunch of pussies who won’t get anything done even when they control the field (see, I worked in your sports analogy)” are purity trolls, whiny crybabies, etc, FUCK YOU TOO. Instead of your sanctimonious I-told-you-sos, try explaining why anyone should ever vote for a fucking Democrat again if they throw in the towel on this.
haven’t i seen you say pretty much exactly this to people in the past? doesn’t matter, much, i guess, though. always nice to see more people onboard with getting offboard.
Becca, yes, I’m from Minn and I do remember. Mondale was the most gawdawfulest boring speaker in the history of the universe. Of course, to be fair, they didn’t have a great deal of time what with Wellstone
being murdered by the CIAdying suddenly like that. When they had him on radio here on MPR he could put you to sleep in 3 secs flat. They’re not in any state to move the country forward, but if they can keep it from moving back, that’s good enough for me. It’s certainly good enough for my grandmother who needs that welfare state, however anemic, to go on living.
But that doesn’t win elections. So you lose. It’s not about you.
But that doesn’t win elections. So you lose. It’s not about you.
prick. you’re also fucking boring as hell, both here and at all the other sites where you compulsively spam the comments with long, painfully obvious diatribes, in which you often feel compelled to double and triple post and answer yourself if nobody else will engage you.
It appeared that everyone in the corporate media decided that due to teabagger Brown’s win that health care reform is D.O.A. In fact, they seemed beside themselves with glee. Finally, all the ass-kissing they have been doing for months has paid off. With their eyes glazed over they exclaim, “See daddy we told you we could sucker Americans into going against reform that is in their interest. We are as powerful as we claim to be. Now, how about a raise, pretty please. You are the best owners we ever had and we are not just saying that, because, privately, we pray to you. He who controls the money knows everything worthwhile. And we will always be your humble servants, because we love the taste of ass.”
Unlike you, anon, I’ve run for elected office several times, and actually had to go out and knock on a few thousand doors and meet voters, and listen to them and persuade them to vote for me, based upon what I pledge to do for them. I know it’s a totally unfair system, since it prevents me from crawling up my ass and dying and sharing my stench with the world, but that is the way a democracy works. You actually have to listen to other people and consider their perspective and viewpoints. And one lesson you learn doing this is that “keeping things from getting any worse” is not a message that gets people to go out and vote. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Anon — Pledging that you can’t make it get better but won’t let it get worse with 15 percent unemployment is not a good campaign theme. Also.
Imagine you are a five-pound sack of wax nipples. These are novelty items for a bachelor party. You’re eight minutes late, and you’re holding the roll to pay the stripper, who is supposed to arrive in fifteen minutes. But the reason you’re late is an eland escaped from the zoo and got hit by a semi on the freeway, so you take surface streets and end up in a bad neighborhood. Some guy tells you to take the parkway west and you’ll get where you’re going in about another twenty minutes.
I think that rather sums up the situation we’re in.
And yeah, I am whining because I didn’t get my pony, I got fucked up the ass by a giant mutant lobster with fifty radioactive dicks.
What Jennifer said.
Oh, and by the way, can you make the next sports analogy baseball, us Eurotrash struggle with American Football and its odd little intracies. hell, i enjoy it, but I cant follow a damn thing thats going on.
Jennifer is the queen of my dreams.
Lester,
now thats what i call a good analogy……
Imagine you are the bearded guy from Abba and you are a special judge for the Eurovision Song Contest. Now imagine that you and everyone you love has full access to government-paid health care plus your favorite club just won the the Swedish premier league.
Conclusion: You are still a shittier musician than BB King in the final stages of diabetes.
Yes, the “Free Armies” beat the US Army in the field, because they love America more. Jesus on a toaster, this is like the “radical” wet dreams of the damn tea baggers, which I’m sure you noticed, are having problems keeping the tea bagging movement from fracturing under the weight of it’s own greed and stupidity. And failing.
And the guy who drew that – great visuals, but no fucking clue about how hot JP4 burns, and the stupidity of standing on a burning chopper to kill the crew.
OK. Rant complete.
Now, my vote is for Jennifer. As TBOGG said, we don’t live here
I can’t believe the really stupid people still have this much power. Where did it all go so wrong?????????
When will the Democrats learn that negotiating/compromising with Republicans is like trying to make a deal with the likes of Ted Bundy. No, you stick a knife in his eye the minute you have the opportunity, and run.
Speaking of stupid:
Jennifer:
Yeah, I’m pretty much finished with talking you folks off the ledge every time the Democrats prove they’re American politicians. You don’t want to vote anymore, fiiiiine.
You just sit there, relax, take a load off. Heck, if you really must feed the politics bug, go stump for a third-party candidate, maybe even vote for them when the time comes.
Then you come back here when that third-party has accomplished a goddamn thing equivalent to what you’re asking the Democrats to pull off. Seriously, you can come right back here and shake your booty at all us clear-eyed realists that thought the Democrats could at least accomplish something so long as we keep voting for them.
I’ll even take a handicap. Let’s see… we do have a President and a Congress which has Democratic majorities in name at least, so…
If you can get a third-party to get a state to consider one portion of a health care reform platform and implement it in… oh, let’s say, ten years. Then you win, and the Democrats really are just spineless jerks.
And some is that the Democratically-controlled Mass. Legislature is one of the most profoundly corrupt and backward festering masses of patronage on the Planet, thus making a vote for a Republican a protest vote against the whole rotten, entrenched system.
Yup. How many state election nights have I found that not one of my candidates won? And that includes Republicans. (Not all Mass. GOP are libertarians/birfers/YECs.) You can’t be honest and sane and win an election. You have to be at least slightly dirty (see: Mike Capuano) or the Southie Boyz will shiv you on Election Night (see Scott Harshbarger).
What’s really sad is that the protest vote will make itself heard in major elections but just ignore the other races. The Machine swept the election where Romney became governor, other than the governor’s race. (He won because in the course of a debate, the Green Party candidate inadvertently revealed the Democratic candidate, Shannon O’Brien, who had previously looked like a decent pick, to be nothing more than a pathetic machine hack. She was rejected emphatically.) So basically nobody good got elected. (To be fair, Romney wasn’t COMPLETE crap, as in he put in more than a
Palinpassing effort for a year or two, though we did have to deal with his learning curve as he kept threatening to cut programs and projects that were ultimately going to save the state money… oops.)Heh, funny story: right after 9/11 the head of Massport (=Logan Airport) got sacked for the security breeches there and it turned out she was a completely unqualified GOP hack patronage hire who barely deigned to show up for work but mysteriously was paid way more than her predecessor. Well, Mike Dukakis was at a public transit meeting where he’d been invited to speak and he told a self-deprecating story about how when HE had been governor, he’d tried to slot some campaign guy into a job over at Logan and the conversation went like this: “Massport does not do patronage hires!” Click!
I guess old Mike D was wondering how it was HE couldn’t get the time of day, whereas Weld and Cellucci could place any old bozo right at the top!

Wow. I’m impressed. You have summarized the whole catalogue of pronouncements from Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, et alia with verve and panache. And I really, really, love the final flourish–breathtaking. Way to spread the love.
You really must make your Sunday School teachers proud.
You liberals are hate-America fags!
Sorry, tea-bagging patriot, I can’t hear you with all those ball-sacks in yer mouth; polite people do not speak whilst eating.
Imagine you are the bearded guy from Abba and you are a special judge for the Eurovision Song Contest.
Somebody once said that listening to Abba is like getting hit over the head with a piece of Ikea furniture.
You appreciate the craftsmanship, but it still hurts like hell.

bookmark it libs…..
on a lighter note, this is just fucken hilarious; John Nolte ties himself in more retorical knots than an Amsterdam S&M mistress:
http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/jjmnolte/2010/01/05/camerons-avatar-shows-hollywood-how-to-trash-america-and-make-a-profit-doing-so/
What’s Na’Vi for “Why does John Nolte hate success and the free market?”
Also, I don’t know if there’s such a thing as a Stupid Gold Card, but if not it needs to be invented for anyone who calls “Inglourious Basterds” “conservative”.
Pledging that you can’t make it get better but won’t let it get worse with 15 percent unemployment is not a good campaign theme
seemed to work for Scott Brown.
And the hits keep coming, kiddos.
Anyone who wants to live on the T&U sustainable farm/compound is welcome. It’s hard work, but it’s honest.
WordPress can suck my dick.
I’m launching my annual campaign to be taken with a group (I’ll pay my way) to live-blog CPAC. I have LOTS of experience running through crowds with a heavy ass Beta on my shoulder from working at TV stations and can keep up with anyone in a crowd.
Plus, you guys know that the sight of me with a camera aimed at her would make Pammycakes shit her overpriced pants (with some spillage onto Spencer) (gross, I know but it cracked me up) (no pun intended) (OK, end of parenthetical comments). You KNOW it’d make her freak out and lose it, and she and Spencer aren’t much bigger than my scrawny ole’ self, Kristol isn’t either I don’t think, Pantload just thinks he is because of the beard, and Steyn will NEVER see me coming.
Please???? Pretty Please?? Also, see my plea at Loonwatch.
Thank You,

Boodley-boo.
Holy sweet mustard-based FUCK, Glenn Blecch is on a stupid wave today.
Not only claiming The Beatle’s “Revolution” is PROOF, PROOF I SAY that Obama is a COOM-YEW-NIST (’cause it mentions people “carrying pictures of Chairman Mao”, y’see!) but comapring George Bernard Shaw to Hitler and himself as a valiant Nazi hunter willing to bring “progressives” (his new code word for anyone left of Ronald Reagan) to justice “for their crimes”.
Yeeeeesh. TEH STUPID IT BURNS US
Oh, and did anyone catch how classy Limbaugh was yesterday? What with playing “Celebration” and all.
*sigh* Remeber the “revolution” they had in 1994? Boy that was some revolution. Yeppers. “revolution”.
Majorities not all they’re cracked up to be. Last Senate Majority larger than the current one? 1979-1981.
Republicans used to run shit like gangsters and Nancy told you so: Republicans “like to talk about bipartisanship,” said Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). “But when the opportunity came to pass a truly bipartisan bill — one that would have passed both the House and Senate overwhelmingly and would have made the American people safer — they failed to do it.”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/21/AR2010012101724.html?hpid=topnews
I really think I’m going to be sick.
I really think I’m going to be sick.
As I said, anyone who wants to work on the compound is welcome. You’ll have to milk goats and shave alpacas, but it could be worse.
Thanks for the link, Stryx. Hard to believe there was a time when Democrats had 76 seats and Republicans had only 16. Not so hard to believe that that was the age when the most shit got done.
As for the other link, watch; the Republicans will stonewall and render the government ungovernable for the next year (possibly the next three years if they don’t get a majority back), and the voters will somehow blame Obama for not being bipartisan enough. Oh, the happy times that are ahead…
DKW FTW.
“anyone who wants to work on the compound is welcome. You’ll have to milk goats and shave alpacas, but it could be worse.”
Thanks for the offer but I’m afraid you won’t be able to run and hide from the coming tshitnami. Now that the hounds of corporate money have been loosed upon the political class, no part of the country will be safe from strip mining, oil drilling or toxic waste dumping. If you’re lucky, your little plot will simply be paved over and you’ll be able to make money if you corporate-farm your goats and alpacas.
Also, I recommend finding high ground for your farm. A good chunk of the coasts will be underwater.
Fuck.
progressives” (his new code word for anyone left of Ronald Reagan)
Fuck “framing”. Everyone to the left of Ronald Reagan should reallty stop inventing new names for themselves and just call themselves liberal if that’s what they are, or socialist, communist, whatever.
Also, remind the cobags that the founding fathers weren’t conservatives. They started a revolution for fuck’s sake.
You’ll have to milk goats and shave alpacas
I’m really hoping those are both euphemisms.
but it could be worse.
Is teabagging republicans part of the work?
“In Massachusetts, Barack Obama’s unicorn of hope and [change] died under the weight of Ted Kennedy’s ego. The left gets angry when it is pointed out, but it is an objective fact.
“Objective fact” apparently has a more mutable definition than I thought.
And some is that the Democratically-controlled Mass. Legislature is one of the most profoundly corrupt and backward festering masses of patronage on the Planet, thus making a vote for a Republican a protest vote against the whole rotten, entrenched system.
Primary turn-out is largely party faithful, so party hacks and long-timers are rewarded in the primary just for being long-time hacks, but the rest of the electorate hates this so the very thing that is an advantage in the primary is a disadvantage in the general.
I’m really hoping those are both euphemisms.
I don’t know. I’ve heard hand-milking is quite a meditative (if crampy and slightly stinky) experience.
Is teabagging republicans part of the work?
Wait, does that fall into the “worse” or “better” category.
Oh, and I’ve checked out what the best places should be to have a farm when climate change hits hard. The problem is, nobody knows for sure. I do know I don’t want to be in the Midwest–my grandparents lived through the Dustbowl and I’d really rather not experience the second one.
Oh, look, that dessicated cunt Pelosi wraps it all up for us by saying they don’t have the votes in the House to pass even the Senate bill.
And you know, she claims it’s because the House members are sticking to their guns on a more liberal bill.
Realistically, it’s because 99.999% of elected Dems are fucking cowardly sacks of animated dog shit. Fuck you all, you get no money or votes from the Left anymore. Flip to the GOP and get it over with, you festering anal sores.
the best places should be to have a farm when climate change hits hard
Mrs. __B’s relatives are talking about buying land near Lake Baikal.
What sparkletits said.
So, the supreme court says corporations really are people and what’s more, they flood the media with as much political filth as they want to. And, as already pointed out, pelosi has taken the high road and said that HCR is dead and all someone else’s fault.
Anyone else *not* think, as I said yesterday, we’re fucked?
I’m done with this shit for awhile. I’m cleaning out the bookmarks and doing something trivial. Fuck Obama. Fuck all the Democrats. Fuck the worthless Supreme Court. Fuck all the greed ridden, corporate scumbags for whom 95% of the wealth isn’t enough. Fuck them all.
As a skeptic, I try to rely on evidence for my conclusions as much as I can. And time and time again, when the whiny turds suffer any kind of setback, the evidence shows that they fold, completely and utterly and without reservation. Expecting anything more is folly.
Sure, sidecar reconciliation (pass the Senate Bill and reconciliate the public plan at the same time) sounds nice, and I wish that it would happen. But I also know that it’s just a wish, and has no basis in reality. It’s one of those things that can’t ever happen, like the Second Coming or magic unicorns for everyone, no matter how much you might want it to.
Mrs. __B’s relatives are talking about buying land near Lake Baikal.
Beautiful! I hear it will be quite warm this time of year!
I’m just trying to find somewhere above the malaria line.
“progressives” (his new code word for anyone left of Ronald Reagan)”
Ronald Reagan the imaginary God that Republicans have turned him into since his resignation, Alzheimer’s and death, you mean.
The real Ronald Reagan is about a mile to the left of where the current party is, and did every one of the things that conservatives now claim “prove” that Bush was really a liberal (including amnesty for illegal immigrants, raising taxes, and increasing the deficit). And this is not me pining for the days of that bastard. I’m just commenting on how incredibly far to the right the conservative movement has gone in just twenty years.
Ya know, at this point, I welcome these secessionist neonazis trying to bring American progressives to ‘justice’ for our ‘crimes’.
The last Civil War, we made the mistake of trying to bring the Southern right wing mouth breathing cavemen back because Lincoln felt they were ‘still americans’. Well, they’re not, they’re protozoans.
Anyway, imagine you are a football team that is up by three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. That’s the Dems in January of last year. Now imagine that the opposing team cuts your lead to let’s say 10 points* with about four minutes to play and they have the ball.
Now imagine you discover that two members of your team have close ties to the mob and they are being pressured to throw the game. Then you find out that three other teammates, during their regular half time bible chanting session, believe they received a message from God stating that, for the good of the country, your team must not win this game. Next, two more team members say they’ve been listening to the fans screaming from the stands and most of those fans want your team to loose, and they really don’t want to disappoint the fans. Finally, a couple more team mates admit that they’ve always secretly admired the opposing team and they’d really prefer to see them win anyway.
That’s us right now.
Next, two more team members say they’ve been listening to the fans screaming from the stands and most of those fans want your team to loose, and they really don’t want to disappoint the fans.
The whole thing was good, but I literally snorted at this.
“I’m done with this shit for awhile. I’m cleaning out the bookmarks and doing something trivial”
Pretty much yep. Food Network and favorite movies. Alternating.

You liberals are hate-America fags!
My, how clever. Did you think that one up on your own?
Not only claiming The Beatle’s “Revolution” is PROOF, PROOF I SAY that Obama is a COOM-YEW-NIST (’cause it mentions people “carrying pictures of Chairman Mao”, y’see!) but comapring George Bernard Shaw to Hitler and himself as a valiant Nazi hunter willing to bring “progressives” (his new code word for anyone left of Ronald Reagan) to justice “for their crimes”.
So…in an ironic turn of events, *progressives* are going to be rounded up and imprisoned in those FEMA camps? And Bernard Shaw = Hitler because..? They were both vegetarians? Are vegetarians going to be rounded up as well? Or just the ones that are playwrights? What if those vegetarian playwrights aren’t American and live in an entirely different country? Do we go all rendition on their asses? Will this apply to screenwriters as well? How about novelists that use a lot of dialogue?
And the Beatles might end up being very grateful to Glen Blech’s cherrypicking of “Revolution’s” lyrics: nothing spurs record sales like being singled out as social menace. When was it–1964? 1965?–that good, God-fearing folk were burning not only their albums but the Beatles themselves in effigy? Man, and people to this day think it’s the Rolling Stones who are really badass: how weaksauce is that?
It’s also tempting to point out the obvious rejoinder that the follow-up to “But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao” is “You’re not going to make it with anyone anyhow” (“Don’t you know it’s gonna be alright”), but I’m sure that *thiose* lines are just part of a clever plan to provide denialability, yes? “Oh sure, they SAID supporting Mao was a futile effort, but why would they have mentioned Mao AT ALL if they weren’t trying to indoctrinate us all? Huh? Answer me that, libs!”
Now with the help of several valium and a Steam account, I have video games to play instead of watching our elected “Democrat” leaders shit our nation down a hole.
Bioshock, here we come. Bitches.
Mmmmmmm, is that some Circular Firing Squad I smell? Why yes … yes, I do believe it is.
PROTIP: responding to “even with 59 seats, we just don’t have the numbers” by howling “why you dirty gutless fuckers, now we’re going to play our Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Of DOOOOOOOM card, saw through your electoral air-hose & stay home in November” may not be such a cunning plan after all.
Why do you think the far-right always aims to maximize voter apathy & to reduce turnout to the absolute minimum? Do you want to help them to win or to make them lose?
Less feely-feely, more thinky-thinky please.
I’m pretty sure that every “Fuck Obama” whine of the last few
monthsdays has been nothing but sweet sweet music to the pointed ears of the wingnut brigade, so since many of you nice folks seem so rapt in your newfound rediscovery of the wonders of Perpetual Butthurt, carry on. KEEP GIVING THEM HOPE THEY DON’T DESERVE – WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRNOG? Jesus, I can almost hear them giggling & maniacally fapping over all this boo-hoo emo shit from here. The nose knows – if you’re holding it when you vote, you’re holding yourself back.
But then, you’re apparently giving up on that whole icky “voting” thing anyway, so never mind.
So, just out of curiosity: when Commandante Palin suspends the USC & the Bill Of Rights, & then generously offers you the choice of having a tracking-chip-implant/pain-collar combo, or a one-way trip to Camp Ubetcha for some “Pacification & Re-Education,” which are you going to choose?
There’s a large wave of “No Incumbents” rage going around Yankeeland right now – so maybe you want to focus on using primaries to get more Graysons & fewer Bayhs in power, as well as to use all that TeaParty “throw teh bums out” sturm-und-dreck to YOUR ADVANTAGE … unless the above set of possible future “choices” sounds like a barrel of fun.
See ya, wouldn’t want to be ya. SRSLY.
*My* sports analogy:
“OK, team. Clearly, the closer we get to their end zone, the harder it is to move the ball. Now that we’re on their 20 yard line, our best bet is to drop back with all due haste to our own end zone for a safety. The advantages are; 1) they won’t be expecting it, 2) it will be harder to block or tackle us as we have a head start to our own end zone in that we remain on our own side of the scrimmage line, and 3) our fleet-footed and quick-thinking actions will result in an exciting score that will be sure to prompt a dramatic response from our boosters and will be much discussed in the sporting press, to say nothing of holding a prominent place in the highlight reels for all time. Not only can we be assured of its successful execution, but it’s a “safe” strategy. Why it’s even got “safety” in the name? What’s not to like?”

So what, we continue to give them money and votes to sell us out to corporate interests and break campaign promises?
Pff. Fuck that.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but today I got onto the horn to my senators and reminded them that they don’t represent the voters of Massachusetts (and now I know how to spell that state’s name too! Bonus!) plus I dropped an email to my congressman (who, bless him, came out with a statement today that the Sentate needs to drop the filibuster rule).
Finally, I dropped a line to the White House, urging THEM to get a frickin’ spine too.
If I’m gonna go down, I’m going down swinging*. I have kids who have to live somewhere. Before I tell ’em to gtfo and live in a sane country, I want to try to fix this one.
*sure, it feels pretty ineffective when I say it but it’s a starting point. And Jennifer, I respect your past efforts and your current frustration. All I can say is, think it over and work out what you’re gonna do (or not do) a little at a time.

Bonus!) plus I dropped an email to my congressman (who, bless him, came out with a statement today that the Sentate needs to drop the filibuster rule). I told all of them how disturbed I am that the election of a single Senator has apparently killed healthcare reform and that I wanted them to use all of their influence and power to push it through.

Sorry, ignore the first version of that comment.
Wow, I somehow missed Jennifer’s response way up towards the beginning of the article.
There’s not much to say, but as they tell the troops, thank you immensely for your service. I think I speak for everyone on SadlyNo on that one.
And good work to me, I just posted the above on the wrong page. FTR, J’s comment that I was referring to is at the top of the “Bill O Is In Charge Of Haitian Rescue Efforts?” page right after this one.
What Jennifer said. ‘Nuff said.
DAMN this pisses me off. WHY is it that the GOP has more power in the MINORITY than the Dems seem to have in the majority? We have a MAJORITY for Chrissakes, in BOTH HOUSES—-Hell, when the GOP had that, five or six years ago, the Democrats rolled over like whipped dogs. Now the tables are turned and the GOP is STILL in control?!
Can someone explain this to me??? I truly don’t get it!
