I strongly recommend picking up this month’s issue of Harper’s to read Kevin Baker’s extraordinary essay called “Stabbed in the Back! The past and future of a right-wing myth.” If you want to understand the intellectual well that’s currently being tapped by people like Jeff Goldstein, then this piece is essential reading.
I agree, it’s an excellent piece. Dolschtosslegende, indeed.
If you include a link to one of the many times Goldstein has made the argument, there’s a pretty good chance he’ll come over here huffing and puffing and accusing you of fucking his dog.
Oh, he doesn’t come over here. See, the last time he did, we fucked his dog.
Also the short piece entitled “Within Rigid Limits” is spectacular. Kevin Baker’s last article for Harper’s is also an absolute must read for those trying to understand the current political climate.
And don’t miss the Art Spiegelman piece on those Danish cartoons. (And check out the foetid LGF “No, no, we’re the only ones who are brave enough to talk about them!” response to it while you’re at it.)
Baker’s written an absolute stunner of an article. Absolutely required reading.
Hmm… Chazmo demonstrates a distinct lack of reading comprehension skills:
And a Reuters report contains another idiotic quote:
To Spiegelman, worldwide riots, violence, dozens of people killed, embassies burned, threats of beheading and terrorism, calls for the abolition of Western free speech … these are all nothing compared to the horrors of Abu Ghraib.
Now I read Spiegelman’s quote as saying that the cartoons were not (or ought not to have been) nearly as insulting as Abu Ghraib. But Chazmo seems to think he is comparing the reaction to the cartoons to Abu Ghraib.
And how many of the LGF faithful readership called him on this error? Zero. Of course, they may have been too busy chapping Spiegelman and Maus to notice.
I am offended by your use of “come over here”. You aren’t that stunningly attractive Gavin. I am sure that Jeff G. can resist your charms.
**(notice how I fall back on the old “I am offended” when I have nothing to contribute.)
To Spiegelman, worldwide riots, violence, dozens of people killed, embassies burned, threats of beheading and terrorism, calls for the abolition of Western free speech … these are all nothing compared to the horrors of Abu Ghraib.
I’m so glad to hear that the LGF crowd is in favor of Western free speech, are horrified by warrantless surveillance of Americans, and are joining us in demanding that Reichsmarshall Gonzales renounce the notion of jailing journalists.
Right, guys???
(crickets chirping)
Also, the most stunning piece I’ve ever read in Harper’s: “On Simple Human Decency” by new editor Ben Metcalf, wherein he asks if he is allowed to write that he wishes to str*ngle B*sh.
I’ll have to run out and get Harper’s, then. The one time I made the mistake of commenting on Jeff “Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead” Goldstein’s blog, I got fragged. I’ve been called stupid in my life, but “blindingly stupid” was a first for Mrs. B…
I also was completely dazzled by this issue of Harper’s. It’s so unfortunate that you can’t access the aarticle on the net. It would have so much power out there.
Oh, he doesn’t come over here. See, the last time he did, we fucked his dog.
And neither well nor gently, I hasten to add.
It’s a cheap subscription, and they publish the articles on the web about 2 months later. LGF and company might have to strain their reading muscles.
Personally, I have fucked Jeff’s dog. Once was enough. I was drunk, the dog was in heat, it was dark. Not something I would ordinarily do twice, unless I was, like, goaded into it on a dare.
Of all the subscriptions I hold, it’s the one I’m least likely to let go of. $20/year very well spent. And hiring Paul Ford to do the website? Genius.
Which month’s issue?
The most recent one I’ve received is May, and I don’t see any article by Kevin Baker. April doesn’t have anything either.
Is it in the June issue? Is that out yet?
Are you people from the future, or am I just imagining this blog. 😉
yes, i got it the other day.
