10 million Lenin fans can’t be wrong
A reader draws our attention to this gem from Mark Steyn Maclean’s writer, Susan Mohammad:
We’re used to warnings about European demographic collapse from Maclean’s magazine. But who knew the entire population of one northern European country (plus several million extra invented nationals) had succumbed already? Apparently not even Mark Steyn, who covers that beat when he’s not writing about movies, music, comics, and “free speech” or, Mark Steyn. In May 2009, a Maclean’s report claimed that “10 million Finns died under Lenin, almost half due to starvation” – remarkable, given Finland’s 5 million current inhabitants numbered only about 3 million during the lifetime of Lenin. And he didn’t even get to rule the small country.
Bonus points: The blog linked to above contains a few more gems by Steyn.
Well, that only shows how EEVUL Lenin was: he killed MORE Finns than even existed!!!1!
(Lenin founded history’s first totalitarian regime. His government killed large numbers of innocent humans. Yet wingnuts manage, somehow, to exaggerate even this level of cruelty, thus rendering accurate descriptions of it suspect. Way to go, guys.)
Thanks again, Canada, for this intellectual giant.
In addition to Anne Murray, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion. Also.
Is already real, sun-risey morning somewhere?
Off to bed after decadent late-night revelries unexperienced since the ’70s. OK, it was a disco-karaoke party. Carry on, hirsute cowboys.
Feh. If you only knew how many Finns HUSSEIN OBAMA killed!!
But you won’t read THAT in yer liberal medias.
Lenin had a secret project to create Finn clones just so he could kill them.
Remember, every sperm is sacred. Killing sperm is murder. When an adult male Finn dies all his sperm die too. I wouldn’t call it starvation though. Anyway, I believe when you take this into account the numbers are a very conservative estimate. You’ve got watch out for that sperm, Steyn
The fact is, you liberals are looking for every minor clerical error to disprove the threat from muslims and the global communist eleite. Your facts are not true, mine are. That blog is a lie and was just started now to make Mark Steyn look bad. You liers are wrong about everything, especially Hopey Changey who will get USA invaded by the muslims.
the fact is, Cap and Trade will cost trillions of dollars, millions of jobs, will take freedom away and will be absolutely no good for anyone. So why do the liberals shove it down our throats, like homosexuality? To fasilitate the global communist eleite takeover of freedom.
Go away Parody Gary, you’re not funny any more.
“Go away Parody Gary, you’re not funny any more.”
Crazy how when I read this kind of thing, I no longer can tell when it’s meant in earnest and when it’s just a parody.
He meant “fins”, as in sharks. Lenin was a big fan of that Chinese soup.
Fact is, it was Stalin who initiated the Winter War, and he even faked the whole reasoning behind that, much like a recently forgotten, and much loved (by panty-wetting “patriot” teabaggers), Republican
ShitheadPresident, in terms of Iraq.Remember that there is a philosophy among rightists and liberal hawks and uber-anti-communist types that holds that if there were mass killings or avoidable deaths under leftists or Communists, it’s not only okay but morally required to inflate the numbers as largely as possible.
So, if most historians gathered around some number of deaths directly attributable to Mao’s “Great Leap Forward” policies, say, 16 million people, and as high as 40 million people, then you should definitely claim that 100 million people were killed because any lower number would be a slap in the face as you threw the victims under the bus in order to spit on their graves.
Lenin also waged a ruthless campaign against fact checkers. Not just content to kill the ones in his own time, he built a time machine and killed future fact checkers. So really Beer Steyn is another victim of this socialist beast.
Was it over when Lenin bombed Pearl Harbor?
Well, you all may laugh, but most of the world’s 8 billion people recognize the threat, because the 30 billion people living on this globe understand that all 300 billion of them can’t be wrong.
That blog is a lie and was just started now to make Mark Steyn look bad.
comedy hour Mark doesn’t need anyone else to look bad….
The really delightful thing is that actually it was Lenin who signed off on the Soviet Decree ratifying Finnish Independence in 1917, as part of the “self-determination of all Russian peoples” (Finland had been a Grand Duchy under the czars). This was of course a fiendishly clever Bolshevik ruse, just so that he could not be claimed to have killed ten million of “his own people”, and he deliberately misspelt self-determination in the final document so that it read “multiple-extermination”. Since the silly Finns, all excited that they were about to join the family of sovereign nations, didn’t read the small print, they deserved everything they got.
As, frankly, do Maclean’s, who by all accounts are very quick to upbraid others for small wrongs… Mites and motes, it seemeth to me.
However… in this case it was not your Mr. Stain, but another master wordsmith named Susan Mohammad, who appears since then to have been consigned to the travel pages, where presumably she will be in a position to advise people to visit Finland, a delightful pine and lakes republic with nobody in it.
Do not fuck with Finland.
OMG! IT’S THE FINNAL SOLUTION!
This sort of truthiness-on-crank is par for the curse for Maclean’s – the same “journalistic” toerag that so often gave (/gives?) regular print space to the protofascist bloviations of the creature whose epithelial cells were probably put into the vat that belched forth such wonders as Palin & Bachmann Teabag Overdrive: the redoubtable Barbara Amiel.
One thing’s for damn sure – Sir Conrad Black’s taste in women conclusively refutes his constant boasts of social superiority.
Steyn is such a piece of shit:
Not every day you hear the Charter of Rights and Freedoms called “comically worthless.” Wonder what Steyn thinks of the Bill of Rights?
I knew Macleans had taken a right turn once they had Kenneth Whyte, the former National Post fuckwad brought in, but shit I didn’t think it was this bad. From Canada’s answer to Time to the National Review North.
Sure Lenin may have single-handedly killed 10 million Finns, but lets see him try that sort of nonsense at a Tea Party protest which usually number in the ArglblarglRarrr-illions.
Steyn might have been thinking of the long-running political oppression of the Ukraine by the Soviet government. But that was after Lenin’s time.
Steyn wasn’t thinking of anything – it was another journalist. But yes, it was probably Ukraine that was in the back of her rather limited mind. Still… “If you write it, they will believe it'”, eh?
Not every day you hear the Charter of Rights and Freedoms called “comically worthless.” Wonder what Steyn thinks of the Bill of Rights?
The Charter has flaws, most notably the “Notwithstanding” clause that allows parliament to set it aside if it wants to.
However, that isn’t Steyn’s problem. His problem is that he thinks it is a gross miscarriage of justice anytime a despicable racist is fired, disciplined or even upbraided for being a despicable racist. It should not be difficult to determine the root cause of this position in his case.

exactly… my wife subscribes to ti, and I occasionally flick through. Five years ago,it was a kind of a homespun Canadian Newsweek. Irritating, on occasion, but enough OKish stuff to be readable. Last couple of years, its taken a real rightwing slant, replacing OK columnists with Canadain richtards, with the usual drop in writing standards.
Its not all the way the NR, but its not far off….
THE FINNAL SOLUTION!
*chuckle*
Wow, Jean Sibelius managed to complete his Sixth and Seventh Symphonies, along with his symphonic poem “Tapiola”, *after* being rubbed out by Lenin. Don’t fuck with the Finns, indeed.
Actually, the post is a bit vague as to YellowSteyn’s connection to the imaginary Finnish atrocity. Other than noting that the level of incompetence required to print his literary skidmarks also allows for other clearly contrafactual drivel, I’m not sure I get it.
Also, I thought most high-schoolers knew the difference between Lenin and Stalin.
Mmmmmmm. Tapioca.
Oh, utterly OT, and since I’m always the last to see this sort of shit, most of you have probably seen it, but I about had kittens reading this.
Man, math is just not this guy’s friend.
It takes a nation of more millions than the nation to hold us back.
The farticle in question is here. It does not have Mr. Unsightly Stain’s name above it.
http://www2.macleans.ca/2009/05/21/finns-still-haunted-by-lenin%E2%80%99s-ghost/
It has, however, been picked up belatedly by the NewFinns (those greatgrandchildren of pre-revolutionary emigrés who pluckily sought to repopulate the region later by marrying their cousins – thereby explaining in part their propensity for playing the accordion and carrying firearms to school), and they are NOT best pleased…

Anyone might think they are inviting people to post on the Maclean’s site.
It is clear from context that 10 is meant to be binary notation, e.g. 2 of your earth millions. There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary notation, and libtards.
Well, you know how Steyn will reply.
I am old enough to remember when one of the big pants-wettings of the Right was the threat of the “Finlandization” of Western Europe.
Which would be, apparently, having the USSR so afraid of them that they feel no need of hosting American nuclear bombs.
How do you know the article is by “Susan Mohammad”?
Macleans! You know, like Time, but for Canadians.
It MUST be said, without fail, and I was turning blue — what with the breathless antici… … …pation.
Right, carry on fucking up.
(Semi-OT — I’m playing “Bioshock” for the first time, and I can’t stop loving the festival of Commonwealth accents. The only Yank is the asshole who built the place. And Atlas — Ozzie with crappy Irish accent, or vicey versy? I’m a little underwhelmed, so I amuse myself with questions like “Is this a Roaring Twenties theme park set in the Sixties? What’s with the bald corpses in evening dress with their suspenders and stockings showing? If bathyspheres are public transport, isn’t the whole place pressurized at one atmosphere? Since everything else is stolen from SS2, isn’t Atlas either a machine or the asshat Ayn Rand stand-in? What dickless wonder decided to play the ‘total darkness punctuated by retina-searing shafts of light’ card during the design phase?” Fifteen bucks was too much by half. I’m on the fourth level and already running out of smutty Big Daddy and Little Sister jokes; professional feminists are truly the hardest working organisms in show business.)
So now the man who helped cause the world financial crisis (Chris Dodd) realizes how bad the environment is for the Democrat Party and retires, along with Byron Dorgan. More and more senior Democrats are retiring in the House, too, putting more and more of Congress up for grabs. And with the economy still sinking (85,000 jobs lost last month, 10% unemployment) those seats are going to go RED.
By the way, Nevada is now in the bag for us after Reid’s racist comments.
Fuck, I knew I should have paid attention in History class! I didn’t know I was dead!
Do not fuck with Finland.
Any country that can get frickin’ Nazis to fight alongside with Jews is not a country with which one should fuck.
Full disclosure … one of my uncles lives in Finland. From what he’s told me of his life there, I have a theory as to how Lenin could kill so many Finns. Evidently, the Finns view Leningrad/St. Petersburg in the same way that Californians view Tijuana — a place to go, get fucked up, take back some cheap liquor, etc., and then return. How many Finns have kicked the bucket due to overdoing it in Leningrad? Well, how many Californian frat boys have had issues related to Tijuana?
And we’re already poised to pick up Teddy Kennedy’s Senate seat.
The Democrat is now BEHIND one point in the latest poll!
Man, we’re going to pick up TED KENNEDY’S seat! That must really piss you off. We’re gonna do it, too, watch!
Another poll…Coakley only ahead by 1.
You must be getting nervous, libs.

Would Gary favor a homosexual Cap and Trade system whereby he can trade gay sex options for valuable tax credits?
Mark “The Shite” Steyn or
Mark “The Human” Steyn
I’ve always been partial to Mark “The Cum Shot” Steyn. Because it’s more vulgar.
Steyn’s beard does not make for comfortable seating.
I don’t know about population, but in area the Finnish speaking part of the USSR was many times the size of Finland. I was a map freak long ago, and I enjoyed looking at the linguistic map of Europe. I also don’t know what it looks like today.
Randy’s right about lots of Finns living in Karelia and other areas of the Soviet northwest, but I don’t think that any reputable source ever claimed 10 million Finns were killed in the whole Soviet era, let alone during Lenin’s rule. Even Norman Davies, who completely loses his shit when it comes to the Soviets, reports “only” 5 million total killed between 1918 and 1922 including Civil War deaths.
Nope Steyn is completely insane.
Now you know how they managed to beat the Russians and the Germans in the same war. Zombies. And ghosts. The ghosts move through the forests to stop the head and tail of the column, then the Z-squad moves in.
Randy and histrogeek: Not “lots” as such (the areas were very sparsely populated, except for birch trees), and in any case parts of the region you are referring to were actually part of Finland, both in the Grand Duchy prior to the Russian Revolution and in the period up to the ceding of territory after the Winter War*. After the second go-around in 1941-44, almost the entire Finnish population of what had been Finnish Karelia left and were relocated in locations around the country. This amounted to 400,000 refugees or displaced persons. There is no way in hell you could make even a fraction of the numbers being claimed by the Maclean’s writer. Shit happens when you are writing to a deadline, but most people have the decency to acknowledge it. This magazine seems sadly lacking in that department.
*The whole point of that conflict – if you believe the Kremlin side of things – was to secure a “better” border, offering more protection for Leningrad/St.Petersburg by moving the frontier further north on the Karelian Isthmus.
As for the Finno-Ugric speakers outside of Finland nowadays, you might check out the map here.

Vlad,
I mis-spoke. I meant lots of Finns as in a decent fraction of the overall Finnish population globally. And did mention that the total number of victims of Lenin’s rule as estimated by a reputable, albeit extremely anti-Soviet, historian was only half what Susan Mohammed was mentioned as the number of Finns killed by Lenin. There was no way there could have been 10 million Finns killed even if you combined every Finn killed by the Soviets from 1917 to 1991.
I suspect that possibly she meant Ukrainians killed by Stalin. The number is still high but not outside reputable sources and the starvation bit fits. The biggest famine of the Leninist period was in the Volga not Karelia. Of course that makes two large mistakes (wrong place, wrong leader) so the author was still an utter tool if she never made a correction.
Guys, talking about Finn’s? check out about latvian . what was going during during winter in 1932/1933 under successor of Lenin.
