Serious question

Other than Hank Kissinger and (maybe) Mother Teresa, have conservatives ever liked any Nobel Peace Prize Laureate?

Maybe Lech Walesa.
Also, nitpick: laureate. Also.
Mother Theresa?
There was that guy who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in Medicine…
And possibly Teddy Roosevelt, depending on how they’re feeling about him at the moment.
Whoops, my fault for poor redenigs kompreehensings.
Muhammad Yunis, the guy who created micro-lending in India.
Elie Wiesel, probably
Sakharov, for sure
A serious question requires a Sirius answer and the Sirius answer is Sadly, No!
Did Esquivel win for lounge music?
UNICEF?
Well, maybe if the Nobel Peace Prize committee would start to realize how much more better for peace it is to have the right people starting and maybe finishing some wars, you wouldn’t be giving all these awards to hippies and communists and outside agitators.
They liked Menachem Begin, didn’t they? Sharing it with History’s Greatest Monster probably tainted it a little bit, though.
Retrospectively and depending on context, probably George Marshall.
But isn’t peace the opposite of war? How could they be for such a wimpy prize? Certainly Republican Jesus wouldn’t like it.
J– Marshall? The guy whom McCarthy accused of being a communist? No effin’ way! They hated George Marshall.
Republicans like Teddy Roosevelt as long as people don’t remember that he was in favor of regulating big business.

That’s no way to refer to Itzahk Rabin!
My contention is that, deep down, these people don’t like anybody. Including their own sorry butts.
Many of the recent winners have been non-white, so I’m gonna go with “no”.
Hell no. They hate peace and liberals and all them there Skandihoovians is socialmalists.
It’s great that he won and all, but has he really done all that much to promote peace on earth? I mean, besides being neither Bush nor McCain, or any of the bellicose retards that pass as politicians in the US?
Did I answer my own question?
They always sort of liked Soviet and other anti-communist dissidents like Sakharov, Walesa, or the Dalhi Lama. Marshall not so much, between McCarthy and the semi-commie Plan (which is what he got his prize for) he has a stink to him. Begin they like but he got it for agreeing not to kill certain Arabs, the wimp.
Some most conservatives are probably OK with groups like the ICRC, UNRRA, Doctors without Borders, and UNICEF but the loudmouths hate just cus they’re all girly and shit.
So anti-commie- Mostly OK (with the caveat that many are weridos-Scientists, labor leaders, mystics)
Generalized humanitarian- Vaguely OK
Non-repentant war makers looking for a break (Kissinger, Begin)- Mostly OK
Otherwise they hate any peace prize winner until they die, after which they may choose to appropriate them (MLK, Jane Addams, TR, etc.)
Egad, look at the headshot for this Nobel Peace Prize winner: Fridtjof Nansen, 1922. I can’t tell if he’s Ming The Merciless’s archrival or a friend of Rob Halford’s. Probably both.
It wasn’t very nice of the Nobel committee to cause hundreds of thousands of new high blood pressure cases amoung the American wingnuts in the middle of a health care reform crisis.
Phleabo,
He stood in the mouth of the enemy and reassured him that America stands ready to move the world forward, got Israel and Palestinian leaders to sit down in the same room and talk, he’s dismantling the nuclear arsenal pointed at Russia’s heart, and he’s opened top level dialogue with Iran by enlisting China and Russia’s help, all in eight months.
WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU WANT HIM TO DO???????
(yes, it’s a cut and paste job…)
El Cid: “Well, maybe if the Nobel Peace Prize committee would start to realize how much more better for peace it is to have the right people starting and maybe finishing some wars, you wouldn’t be giving all these awards to hippies and communists and outside agitators.”
This. I couldn’t have stated it so succinctly. Bravo!
I think they’re generally offended at the idea that some academics in Sweden get to pass judgment with such a big megaphone.
I mean, I don’t think Kissenger getting the Nobel was something anyone on the right really appreciated, except as a tool to rub it in the faces of those damn dirty hippies.
Conservatives like the early work of De Klerk and David Trimble. Before they sold out and got all peace-y.
Nansen was cool, a polar explorer who helped Amundsen with his exploits. Nansen’s memoir “In Northern Mists” is rather good.
Nansen’s memoir “In Northern Mists” is rather good.
“In Northern Mists,” with that hairstyle… Fridtjof Nansen is metal, dude.
As left wing as I am I think Obama getting the “Peace Prize” is a tad problematic. The head of the National Security State who is already dragging his heals on Iraq, doubling down on Afghanistan (don’t let his disagreements with McChrystal fool you – he’s gonna expand the war), and continuing the use of rendition/torture.
He ain’t a DFH people. He’s the CiC and damned willing to use the power of our armed forces to expand American hegemony. And whatever that is it isn’t striving for peace.
Huh, I knew of Nansen’s polar exploits but his career as a politician, biologist oceanographer, and humanitarian sounds a lot more important to me. No wonder they gave him the Peace Prize.
What about Teddy Roosevelt?
And they like to re-appropriate icons like MLK, once they are safely dead.
WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU WANT HIM TO DO???????
Get me some motherfucking iced tea. Lazy uppity boy still ain’t brung it in yet.
Herr WIlly Brandt, perhaps.
FARK headline sums up the Wingnut strategy pretty well, methinks:
They just forgot the eleventy-billion exclamation marks and the little Naked-Gun style roof light.
Rabin and Peres?
Did Esquivel win for lounge music?
He got the Nobel Laid Back prize, similar to the Peace prize but it comes with a little cocktail onion.
Well sure. I assume he’s got some black metal band with his fellow Norwegianers with an unreadable name and a buncha incomprehensible Norwegian song titles.
You can’t see his neck tats in that photo, too.
Pam channels her inner Jean-Paul Sartre:

Then, reverting to fantasy:
What about Aung San Suu Kyi?
Given that Fridtjof Nansen was a polar explorer and subsisted for years off of seal and polar bear meat, I believe he is harder core that any metal band in existence.
Seriously, if Fridtjof Nansen gets a little hungry in the afternoon, what does he do? He kills a freaking polar bear. The largest land predator on earth and the only one that will regularly hunt humans for food.
Breakfast: kill polar bear.
lunch: kill polar bear
dinner: kill seal (for variety)
midnight snack: kill polar bear
What whiny ass punk bitch death metal band can compare to that?
Peace has a liberal bias.
As “secretlysomeoneelse” notes Pam sez:
Which is true, but isn’t it odd of her to think that?
I heard they were a fan of 1972’s prizewinner:
1972 – The prize money was allocated to the main fund
They hated George Marshall.
As I said, retrospectively and within certain contexts.
Egad, look at the headshot for this Nobel Peace Prize winner: Fridtjof Nansen, 1922. I can’t tell if he’s Ming The Merciless’s archrival or a friend of Rob Halford’s. Probably both.
What a wonderful face!
There was that guy who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in Medicine…
He was the one who diagnosed Terri Schaivo as a Mensa using videotapes of her head convulsing and eyes blinking. They loved him.
Wingnuts were also outraged when Bush didn’t get the Nobel Peace Prize for invading Iraq for dubious reasons based on faked intelligence, too.
I’m expecting Jack Black and Tim Schafer to share the 2010 Peace Prize for Brütal Legend. Maybe some conservatives can support that.
Wikipedia on Nansen is full of goodness. “Hard core” is way too weak a term for him.
In 1893, Nansen sailed to the Arctic in the Fram […] which was deliberately allowed to drift north through the sea ice, a journey that took more than three years.
… Including a year of sledging across the ice-cap when he and a mate abandoned the ship and got slightly lost.
77south’s list of his exploits omits “neurologist; pioneer (along with Ramón y Cajal) of the neuron theory”.
But OMFSM Nansen helped Socialists so no love for him:
I think it would be way cool Internet irony if this comment thread inspired a revival of interest in Fridtjof Nansen.
I think I will go direct some more attention this way….
Penn Gillette really likes Norman Borlaug.
