The Best Film of 2005

I just got done watching R. Kelly’s hip-hopera Trapped in the Closet. Mother of God. It’s by far the best movie of 2005, and the best film I’ve seen since the Turkish Star Wars.

Would you give it an 11?

I’ve watched it several times and it’s just as funny as the first time. It brings tears to my eyes. I wonder what R Kelly thinks of it?

My own personal yardstick by which I measure all bad movie is the vastly-underrated Highlander 2. In your opinion, how does Mr. Kelly’s opus stack up to that masterpiece?

Rex: While I have to agree that Highlander 2 was possibly the worst movie ever made (hands-down the worst sequal), I’m not sure *how* it could be considered underrated. I rememver being at a drive-in several years ago when a trailer for Highlander 3 was shown. My wife turned to me and said “What are they going to call it? ‘Highlander 3: The Apology’?”

Funny, my friends and I called it the same thing when we saw it in theatres. 🙂

I have a friend who to this day refuses to acknowledge that Highlander 2 was ever made. He’ll discuss the merits and flaws of 1, 3 and Endgame, but bring up 2 and he’ll pretend you’re talking a foreign language.

Oh my god, Highlander 2: The Quickening was one of the best bad movies of the modern era. I remember fondly driving an hour in the rain to see it in the one theater in eastern Massachusetts (Quincy maybe?) that was showing it just after it opened. I remember thinking “WTF?!?!” (or its pre-Intarweb equivalent) when Planet Zeist was first mentioned. I remember yelling “If it’s called ‘The Quickening,’ why is it so damn slow?” I remember when the sound went out during a gun battle, and everyone in the theater started makinmg “Bam! Bam! Ratatatatatat!” noises.

Ah, memories….

For those not familiar with the wonder that is “Trapped in the Closet” one should read the Cliff Notes version that somethingawful so thoughtfully provides.

I actually purchased the directors cut of H2, hoping against hope that something … important? worthwhile? plot-like? – had been left out of the theatrical release. Was it? Sadly, No! Just more of the same ….

Ah, yes, Highlander movies: There should have been only one.

I saw the R Kelly thing on VH1 with a coiffed “vee-jay” providing a frame between each part, discussing the “layers” and the “subtext” and interviewing R Kelly about his “vision”.

Seen as a parody of an English lit class, it was quite funny. Seen as a serious review of a modern pop work or “art” it was…sad.

I saw the same VH1 segment, and if I remember correctly they cut it into four three episode segments to aid in digestion. Laugh out loud funny stuff.
And R Kelly’s cameo in the South Park episode on Scientology was spot on.

The DVD has a running director’s commentary. And since R. Kelly, playing the “narrator” in the song, is describing the events unfolding, the DVD commentary has R. Kelly commenting on the narrator commenting on the events. It’s enough to make you gouge your eyes out. And yes, I own it…I am so sad.

Have you seen the website where someone used The Sims 2 to make videos?
