The Patriots ain’t what they used to be, but they should still kick the crap outta the hapless Jets. Rawk on.

I dunno. The Jets are looking better than they have. This is the first time they’ve trailed by only three points in a long time.
I’m pissed that the Giants managed a win. They and the Colts are my two most hated teams, now that the Pats aren’t very good.
nice ‘turnover.’ Hopefully the Jets can score now.
Maybe the cheater Pats can use their snowplow to steal another win. The Raiders got screwed too.
I’m still pissed about that Raiders/Pats game. Not that it takes much to piss off a Raiders fan.
O Jesus, whine, whine, whine…
ok fine, Jets stink. At least the Mets are going to be good this year.
Also, as long as we are whining, when are you guys bringing back the old black background? Is that still in the offing? I’ve kind of gotten used to the new look, but I still preferred S,N! classic.

Why do the Mets always sign a bunch of guys over the age of 33 to long-term contracts for too much money, or trade for guys way past their prime who already have huge contracts? I’m thinkin’ Mo Vaughn, Robbie Alomar, Tom Glavine, Billy Wagner, Carlos Delgado, Jeromy Burnitz… the list is astonishing. I swear to God that team will never learn.
Mets management in the past have seemed to be more name conscious than production conscious, but Mo Vaughan is really the only one that’s fair on that list. (I mean in terms of past his prime and having a huge contract.) I was against that trade at the time, because it looked like they had the makings of a good team without him. For the other guys, I guess it’s something in the water.
Alomar was easily the best 2B in baseball at the time, and I still haven’t seen a good explanation for his mystifying decline. I give the Mets a pass on him because no one in baseball could have expected that. He’s still not even 40. They didn’t give up much to get him, and he was only owed like 16 million over two years.
Burnitz has had two pretty good seasons since leaving the Mets.
Glavine has pitched better than his record (which has been hurt by a total lack of bullpen support since he came to New York), and reinvented himself in the second half last year. His 2005 stats was comparable to most of his years with the Braves. (except in W-L.) Besides, if he hadn’t signed with the Mets, the short list of teams he would have landed with includes the Red Sox.
As for Wagner and Delgado, the jury is out on whether they are past their primes or not. Delgado was in the top 10 in the NL in HR, 2B, OBP, RBI, and Slugging percentage last year, and is only 33. (the same as Manny Ramirez.)
Floyd and Beltran were both signed in their prime, and even though Pedro is getting over the hill, that signing was not only huge for the team, but also probably drew an extra million fans.
This, combined with trades that sent salary out, and money they got back from the Marlins in the Delgado trade, plus the fact that they still have a lot of young players means that they have extra money to spend this year.
Also, with all the money they are spending, they are still only third in payroll in the majors.
As a Mets fan, I’ve been conditioned not to let expectations get too far, but based on last year and the improvements made this year, cautious optimism is giving way to confidence that they will improve on last year. They seem to have a team identity as opposed to being a collection of mercenaries. The fact that their two biggest off-season acquisitions came from division rivals is also encouraging.
I guess the point is they have learned. You’ll see.
(All apologies for the baseball nerdiness…)

Signing a 34 year old closer to a 4 year deal? Uhm, ok.
How’s that Kazmir trade working out for ya?
And to the sobbing Raiders fans: good God, you guys make Little Lord Fauntleroy look like Chuck Norris. Wipe the tears off your cheeks and stand up straight. How many years has it been? God, I thought Raiders fans were supposed to be tough.

Baseball?! It’s friggin December! NFL is coming down to crunch time! ACC Basketball is about to storm the nation! Enough with the baseball!
Oh yeah, Vick, son of Mary and Joseph, got ruled yesterday! Go Panthers!

I know. They’re worse than pre-2004 Sox fans.
Yeah, well the Pats owner did a little cryin’ too when Putin made off with one of his rings. Good thing McNabb played like shit last year so he could get another one, sniff.
I know. They’re worse than pre-2004 Sox fans.
And almost as bad as post-2005 Sox fans.
BTW- how does it feel to support an NFL team that is in a division that’s actually worse than the NFC North?
Yosef — where’s the seahawks fan you’re addressing?
Baseball gives me gas. ftttt…
If you want to be a Patriots fan you better have the five layers of Visa protection. Shit gets pretty deep up in there.
Yeah Yosef,
Admittedly, it’s a terrible moral struggle rooting for the Pats now that they play in a bad division. I feel owned. small. puny.
I mean, sure, they might not have the glorious playoff history of the Panthers (I mean the Pats barely WON their Super Bowl against them) and their cheerleaders are rarely involved with girl2girl action when traveling on the road, but they’re honorable enough. Maybe they’ll just decline participating in the playoffs because of their shitty division.
(Brad, don’t totally give up yet, they only gave up two field goals in the second half against the Chiefs and 3 points against the hapless Jets, which wouldn’t seem like that big a deal until you consider they had been getting torched by the equally hapless Dolphins and Saints before KC…)
Well we lost…yeaaa here comes that first round draft pick.
It’s down to either us or the texans…J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! I can see fireman fred now 🙂
Tom – I didn’t even think of that. Reggie Bush would look pretty good in Green and White, although knowing then they will probably pick someone else.
shite. That should be ‘knowing them.’
n.o.t.l.f.- Keep on living in the past. That’s all the Pats will have (unless you watch esPATSn where they still think they’re the best team in football.
And that cheerleader thing is a source of pride down here.

Yeah, so are teeth. Big deal.
