Although Andrew Sullivan likes to act poor and rant about Noam Chomsky’s speaking fees, turns out he doesn’t do so poorly himself. According to a Doug Giles interview with Mike Adam (there’s a dream team circle jerk if we ever heard of one:)
We had Andrew Sullivan come out to the university [University of North Carolina at Wilmington] and speak for $10,000 in favor of gay marriage.

What a threesome. Yuck. I wonder if Giles is now ready to admit his gayness.
When we listened to this back in October, we noted that “Mike gives us 30 minutes or so of his usual spiel about how liberals keep picking on conservatives. For instance, he complains about how UNCW never books conservative speakers, but then book their first one: Andrew Sullivan (“they book a Republican and it’s a GAY Republican — they always slap you in the face”).
Yes, gay Republicans DO always slap you in the face, but only if you are being naughty.
To clarify my earlier comment, Doug and Mike were talking about Sully the last time I listened to “Clash Radio,” which was back in October (although the show I listened to was taped in September). It seems that they STILL aren’t over Sullivan getting paid to speak at UNCW — because Mike would presumably do it for free, except that as a professor he does get paid. Of course, Doug charges for his speeches too (but he offers a discount to manly groups, like the Armed Forces and NRA groups). So, I guess they’re just mad that Sullivan gets to be openly gay, while they have to stay in the closet.
A little jealousy here maybe ? 10K is nothing. Sure, us everyday Joes don’t go out and get a 10K pop for a one night stand, but this is different. How much money do you WANT Andrew to make ? He has the blog, he writes a fewbies for TIME, TNR, etc. and then, he does his speaking engagements mostly in the fall. I can’t say for sure, but I don’t think it is a year-round continuous thing for him to make speeches. I would think that his health concerns prohibit much more. Give the guy a break.

Like Mike Adams, I hate how invited speakers don’t agree with me in every respect. I crave constant reassurance and reinforcement, and manufacture it when it’s lacking. The only good use of my university’s money would be to institute a FlipYrWhig Lecture Series, with guests including FlipYrWhig and a staged reading of an email sent from FlipYrWhig’s wife’s email account in support of FlipYrWhig.

We don’t have any pricise figure wishes as far as Andrew’s speaking fees are concerned. If he can get $100K per speech, we say go for it. If we charged $10K per though, we’d find better things to do than complain about other people’s, nor would we need to run a second fundraiser 6 months after saying we wouldn’t run one for a year, giving inflated bandwidth costs as a justification.
