As They Listen For An Echo, I Hear Only A Roar
K-Lo (who, if Gavin’s still up, would do to have an exploded cigar photoshopped into that photo of hers*) says:
Not About Individuals [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
One thing seems clear: Santorum, Steele, seemingly Talent … angry Santorum haters aside, in many ways this wasn’t about individuals — certainly not in these instances. This was a throw-the-bums (re “Republican) -out election — even if the guy I am voting for is not a bum.
Umm, not quite. Neither is this near-sweep neatly explained, as George Will among others tonight attempted, as a mere cyclical phenomenon. Nor is it explained by an “anti-corruption” wave, at least in the typical sense: William Jefferson and Bob Menendez both appear to have won their races. People aren’t giving a shit about chickenfeed corruption; rather, they are radically addressing the systemic corruption that is Bush-at-war.
No, what this election is about is telling George Bush, “Fuck you and everything you stand for, you rotten fuck-up.”
This is the beginning of the end of Bushism. The near-end of “rollback” as an ideology. The end of blowing up countries for the sheer thrill of it. Republicans weep tonight not for their actual losses but because they know they’ll not have a blank check again for perhaps a generation; and while they can take pride in the fact that they’ve destroyed 800 years of common law and made the entire world hate our fucking guts, many of them will regret it that they weren’t able to torture all Muslims just as many others among them will bemoan their failure to destroy social security. They did a hell of a lot of damage, but they’ll always believe that they were cheated out of doing more.
So, gloat over them. Laugh at their weeping. Try to resist, however, lapping up the sweet sorrow of their salty tears — delicious, no doubt, but poison. Anyway, we don’t exist to allow them to be a ‘loyal opposition”; instead, it’s our solemn duty to send them the way of the dodo. Some of them know what’s coming:
My guess is that any high ranking official at DOD who was around in 2003 is going to be spending most of the time getting ready for hearings, investigations, maybe worse. The more recent appointees at the top four or so levels may avoid the worst of it, though they too will be kept busy. But those on hand for the Iraq invasion are going to be facing non-stop Congressional interrogations. I suppose we’ll see an exodus from the Building shortly.
Let’s hope so.
Bonus Crackpot Watch: Larry Kudlow assumes the new Congress will be stupid enough to give reactionaries exactly what they want. Later on, his sore loser-ness comes out, predicts world financial meltdown because, you know, everyone in Asia likes Bush’s hawkishness which will be checked by the evil new Congress waaaaaaaah waaaah WATB.
*For her role as idiotic Santorum enthusiast, of course. And yes, double entendre intended.
Subpoenas. Righteous Subpoenas, served on those rightwingtards who have wronged us.
How’s that sound?
Major props to Howard Dean. This wouldn’t have been possible without Dean’s 50-state strategy. He is a great man and a great asset for the Democratic Party.
How does that feel, Repugs? Howard Dean kicked Karl Rove’s ASS.
What JK47 said with a Sam Seder-style closet-door creak on the side.
Hee hee- now I know what you were talking about, A.
Trolls? Where are you? Gary? Dustbin of history?
Shit.
Burns keeps creeping closer to Tester.
And Tweety said there’s a 90% chance of dems getting the senate, which makes me feel queasy.
Nancy Pelosi seems to be some kind of large sad limpid vagina.
“Mr President, we will now rethink Iraq” or some such happy statement.
No, “Mr President, you are going to prison.”
Democrats are wienies. The neocons will be back.
You know, as someone pointed out, taking back the senate isn’t nessicarily going to stop the rubber stamping et al, but DAMN will it be a sweet symbolic victory.
I’m talking, almost-but-not-quite the same level as coming back from a 0-3 run and beating the Yankees to go on to win the World Series, sweet.
I used The Google to look on The Internets, and what has happened? Disloyal demofacists have voted out our leader’s supporters! The terrorists have won! Now we maybe won’t get our wars with Iran and Syria, and we won’t get to nuke Mexico or wherever it is that Cezar Chavez guy is from. Boo hoo hoo, I cry bitter wingnutty tears!

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of thier women!
They shoulda bombed Iran when they had the chance.
Didja guys see where Lieberman got 71% of the Republican vote?

Really, I have no clue why he even bothered to try for the Democratic ticket, when it’s pretty clear where is base and loyalties lie.
Thank you California for getting rid of Pombo! I say this on behalf of all our public lands (yeah I know who am I to talk…) but this is one race I REALLY wanted the repubs to lose. The only damper on my total happiness is that my former home state of MN looks like they are re-electing that bastard Pawlenty as governor- he makes Jesse Ventura look good.
ecostudent –
CA says, “You’re welcome!”.
The McNerney victory is a victory for the entire country, and that’s no overstatement. This would not have been possible without the tireless boots-on-the-ground efforts of the grassroots/netroots organizers such as Democracy for America.
What JK47 said about Howard Dean’s 50-State strategy and Rove!
What Auguste said about “with a Sam Seder-style closet-door creak on the side.”!

Words to be chiseled in granite. Or on the frogbelly-white bodies of Karl Rove, Ken Mehlman, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Dubya, Jeb…
rofl lmfao @ gop.
heh in-fuckin-deedy.
So far, this is my favorite hangover.
Dear Congressional Republicans,
EAT IT, COBAGZ!!!!!!!1!1!11!1!!ONE!
Sincerely,
America
A little perspective from Free Republic.
/crackle!
Teh General sympathises with the Little Green Fascists.
When do the forced gay marriages with mandatory abortions begin?
William Jefferson and Bob Menendez both appear to have won their races.
Jefferson did not — he needed 50% to win outright, and he got nothing like it. He’s going to a runoff election. And, I haven’t been following it closely, but the charges against Menendez don’t seem to me to amount to much. Swap in Mollohan, though, and the point holds.
Thanks for the good work, Tommy!
Hey – did Jean Schmidt win?
This is going to be fun, painting her as the face of the GOP.
Bwah-ha-ha! Floridians have elected a closet-case faggot as governor! Stoopid Floridians! Oh, and a note to all you Florida male “escorts” out there: teh gravy train has arrived!1!
Yes, Jefferson’s in a runoff with another Democrat. He might be ousted or not, either way the Dems don’t lose a seat
And, damn, I thought I was the frist to give Gary a yoo-hoo in the thread above. Still… oh, Gaaaaaaaarrrrrryyyyy!! C’mon and spin for us, baby!!!11!
C’mon and spin for us, baby!!!11!
Sit and spin is more like it.
“Fuck you and everything you stand for, you rotten fuck-up.
Beautiful, just beautiful.
My take on it is,
This is the beginning of the … end of blowing up countries for the sheer thrill of it.
You are wildly optimistic if you think a Democrat win has somehow altered America’s warrior, might-makes-right culture. Oh, how I wish it were so …
Although Ms. Lopez must be devastated, looking on the bright side, perhaps Democrats will legalize bigamy and she can marry Santorum.
Didja guys see where Lieberman got 71% of the Republican vote?
Nobody seems to have focused on the fact that the Republican party threw its own guy under the bus to “beat Lamont.” What the hell kind of party message is that — it’s more important to keep the other guys out than to keep our guys in? If I’m that Republican candidate, I am seriously thinking of switching teams right now.
I cannot be wholly happy, as Ah-nold has a mandate to continue to fuck up my beloved California.
However, it’s clobberin’ time. Here in San Fran, we’re gonna hold Pelosi’s feet to the fire to force the impeachment issue. Don’t come home without writs in your hand, Miss Nancy.
Maybe Steele and Talent weren’t rejections based on personality(seeing as both were reasonably close) but its hard to see how Santorum could be anything but, relatively scandal free incumbent loses by nearly 20 points in a state that is only mildly oppositional to his party, if that’s not a rejection of Santorum (its not like Casey is this magnetic Obama/Clinton-esque personality either) I don’t know what would be.

Careful Tulkinghorn,
You used the following terms in the same sentence:
“face” “painting” “Jean Schmidt”
It could have gotten ugly.
“They did a hell of a lot of damage, but they’ll always believe that they were cheated out of doing more.”
As Reagan Republicans felt cheated by a Clinton victory.
After party week, it is time to get _deadly_ serious about bringing the case to the people for prosecuting these people to the full extent possible for their war crimes. Or they will be back with an even more furious vengeance.
It could be impeachment and trials for war crimes and other high crimes against the constitution. But I think South Africa has shown the 21st century world a new option out of the dialectical clash of black and white. As it surfaces in so many ways, it is clear that we never lanced the poison of Vietnam from national conscieousness. What better way to finally clear the soul of America than to hold Truth and Reconciliation conferences around the country where full disclosure and confession of the acts which led us into our current debacles are offered for amnesty? Where full disclosure of the facts wash away the poison of Rush Limbaugh and his imitators so that we can crawl back to a “reality based” community.
The Democrats have a lot to do to repair America internationally and domestically. And the Congress is still highly divided. Will cooperation work within the time frame of what Colbert’s ego mused will be “Jeb in ’08”? Or has the time come to patriotically lead or die? To show some principles instead of listening to polls and lobbyists?
