Of course, Bill Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994, at the age of 32. That, combined with Helms’ long life, is about as good a proof as any that if there is a supernatural Creator of All Things, he or she hates us.

Apparently, Helms was suffering with dementia in his final years. I hope he had African-American carers who gently reminded him who he was with a cheery ‘time for your mashed banana, Mr Cracker Asshole.’

Do fascists have respect for decency in authority? I’d have thought they assumed authority conferred decency, completely detached from any facts about how a person in authority actually behaved.

The proof’s in the pudding there, and in general decent authorities tend to last longer in any but the most surreally horrible climate (like, say, North Carolina) than horrifyingly venal ones.
