I’ve torn two Bush ’04 stickers off my jalopy that relatives had thoughtfully affixed to it.

A friend of mine, a blue populist Clinton-type was telling me the other day that he told a RR uncle of his that he was voting for Kerry. The uncle tore the bag of popcorn out of his hand that they had been sharing: “If you’re gonna vote for that commie then you can’t have any more of my popcorn”. Yes, the uncle is born again and believes in the rapture and all that; they’re both farmers except the uncle really believes that Jesus blesses his crops. Friend asked, what about Iraq. Answer, “freedom isn’t free.”

So anyway, it all drove me insane long ago.

Half of the electorate has, quite simply, stopped even pretending to be more than the sum of their ignorance and bigotry. They’ve also bid adeiu to even a nodding acquaintence with consistent logic and critical thinking.

I had a minor nervous breakdown some time back. I mention this only because it was a fascinating chance to see one’s mind from an unusual angle: how tenuous the grip on sanity is, and how easy it can be to let go. Not in a dramatic, hallucinatory way; but in the subtle fashion of letting your wishes (and fears) determine objective reality. Once you decide something is true that YOU KNOW IS NOT TRUE, you’re down that slippery slope at an ever-increasing speed.

Say this about red-state people: they’re very authoritarian-minded, and therefore they look to their trusted authorities to tell them what to believe. Their trusted authorities, esp. the religious ones, not only gave them permission to “let go” but commanded it as God’s Will. They’ve decided truth is what they want it to be.

I’m very glad to be living in a blue state, but wonder if the contagion will reach even here if, all the gods forbid, Bush wins in November.

All my relatives stayed. They love it there. They’re all now right-wing/Rush-is-Right Rethugs. Didn’t used to be. It’s something in the water — no, I’m serious! Once the toxin level in your blood gets too high, you know, you lose brain function, don’t you? And New Orleans has one serous pollution problem, as does most of southern Louisiana…

Or it could be that brain virus I’ve been speculating about over in Pete’s comments.

Just stay really drunk at all times. Thats how i was in New orleans. I went for Mardi Gras and the whole week is just a blur. i bet the elections wouldn’t seem so bad if you were fucked up.
