Hagee and the American fundamentalist community believes that Israel needs to be kept alive and kicking at all costs so that the Apocalypse can happen. For Israel, this means an unconditional and virtually unlimited source of support in the most powerful country in the world; and all they have to do for the fundies in exchange is sit around, keep on living and wait patiently for an event that they know is never going to happen.

It’s a great deal. I’m no fan of Israel (or Lieberman), but even I have to laugh at how easily they lead the Christian Right around by the nose.

At least differentiate Israel the country from ‘Israel’ the American policy issue.

For greater clarity, the former may be called ‘Israel’, the latter ‘Schmisrael’.

Just what is it exactly that allows nations full of historically good and kind and compassionate people to select as their leadership increasingly ugly, violent and hateful thugs?

It’s the triumph of the Mafia model for loyalty. How do you build a political machine? People are normally very unreliable, they don’t do what you tell them and if the going gets tough they rat you out. Sending your heavy over with a baseball bat to talk sense doesn’t work well in the long run. So how to build an organization that can weather sustained attacks?

I mean, wouldn’t it be nice to have someone who will do whatever you tell him to do and would never in a million years betray the organization? For this you need two things. You need someone with a really illegal kink though murder works too. A pedophile would be ideal but use your imagination. There are plenty of other paraphilias to work with. Of course you’ll need documentation, photos are good, video is better. You can hold this over someone’s head for while but you aren’t really guaranteed his/her utter fealty. To really complete the deal you need to provide your made man with the objects of his desire. This creates a mutually beneficial relationship, you do whatever the fuck we tell you to and we keep you supplied in little boys or whatever it is you’re into. If there are problems we got your back. This isn’t a fantasy, it seems to be how a lot of powerful organizations function. From the Mafia to Scientology to the Skull and Bones society. In the middle ages the Catholic Church used the confessional to gather information and then used that power for it’s own agenda. In the US The Family is highly active politically and is also structured along these lines. Ex members report considerable child sexual abuse within the organization.

Joe Lieberman may well be too. This would explain why the Clintons among others rushed to help him secure his win against Ned Lamont. That may seem incendiary but it took me five min to find that accusation in Wiki. Do you really think the GOP doesn’t know or would hesitate to use it? Oh, and the same Wiki article mentions that Norm Coleman co-chaired the National Prayer Breakfast in 2006, organized by the The Fellowship, one of the names the Family goes by. Norm is known in the trans community in Minn as being a “fan”. He also suddenly and mysteriously switched parties years ago, right around the time it came out he had a transwoman working for him. They had an affair. How do I know? She told me.

Joe Lieberman is a lost soul. I see no reason to ask him to renounce Hagee as he, Lieberman, is in the process of destroying himself. The voters of Connecticut made a bad mistake two years ago. They won’t do it again in four years.

As a Jewish American, I was initially proud when Gore chose Lieberman as his running mate. The more I heard from Lieberman during the 2000 campaign, the more I regretted his being on the ticket with Gore. His buddying up to Bush and McCain over the Iraqi war, I thought, was the last straw. Now he wants to affect what is seen on You Tube violating the First Amendment (and he does have First Amendment rights to support Hagee), and finally this stuff with Hagee. I just can’t wait until the Democrats take real control of the Senate this fall so they can say bye-bye to Lieberman.

In fact, it would be “good” even if Hagee and Cie. stirred up open Antisemitism in the US, as that might get more American Jews to move to Israel – right now it is kind of hard to defend the notion that Israel is safer for Jews than the US.

The only thing Hagee believes is that the vitriolic insanity is filling his bank account. I’m not sure what LIEberman’s angle is, unless he’s getting a kickback or speaking fee at th event.

He is an american senator representing the people of Connecticut.

And yet, in complete disdain and disinterest, the only constituency he represents is Israel. Now, sure, Israel is a friendly nation, but americans are elected to national political office to work on behalf of those who elected them. And if instead they work only in support of a foreign government, indeed, to the DETRIMENT of the american citizens who sent them to office, they are committing an act of treason and should be prosecuted…

2) MalkinMania has gripped this place lately, so you guys may have missed Super Star Parker’s Friday column, in which she straight up defended Hagee and blamed the left blogosphere for parsing his comment (that’s an intentional singular…she only admitted that he had one statement in question). Star is a hideous, hideous bigot, but this one really went beyond the call of wingnut duty.
