If you're wondering why actor212 didn't leave a link to that statement by Obama it's not just because he's lazy and has bad internet manners, it's because Obama never said that. nobody–you can point & laugh, but in Kansas in 96, Nader wasn’t allowed on the ballot. And he needed a percentage of votes nationwide to get federal funding (that added up to anything meaningful). Clinton was going to win, Kansas was going to go to my dear Baccalaureate speaker Bobdole. My vote mattered in the sense that it added to Nader’s funding, but otherwise? Not much. My local vote mattered, and I used it well. And Kansas was hardly the only state in that position.

Not tracking. You voted for him in 1996….but did you vote for him in 2000?

Growing up in Topeka, I remember seeing Phelps on public access TV. He would be at every city council meeting, in running shorts and a windbreaker and wrist bands, complaining about this or that specific inanity while the council just rolled their eyes. Then he took to the streets, making such an ass of himself and his family that it had the effect of pushing the ambivalent Midwesterners firmly to the gay rights side of the street.

Funny how that works.

owl–unfortunately for people around me (though I’m quite happy with it), that’s kind of my whole life. Sticking to things regardless.

Phelps calls himself a lot of things. Hey, he was just a peaceful protester in way-too-tight-biker-shorts the day it was either him or me rolling down the hill at KU. Locally he’s a bad joke. Somehow he became a bad joke with a website.

Now that things are critical, I’m Obama all the way. I agree with what you said intensely. I want the most outside I can get. Maybe I just listened to too much Patti Smith as a kid. (No racial pun intended). Owl, I agree 100%. We can’t keep doing this to ourselves.

I wanted to vote for Nader in 2000. Back then I still had respect for him, for his past as a consumer advocate, and from what I knew about him his positions were a lot closer to mine than Gore’s. (And Good Dog, Holy Joe for a running mate? Hard to swallow.) But in the end I voted for Gore - I was in a swing state, Iowa, and the state did indeed go for Gore, as it had for Clinton in the previous two elections. Good-hearted & practical is always a good combo.
