I’m a huge Humphrey Bogart fan and I try to catch as many of his movies that I haven’t seen when TCM runs ‘em. They recently showed All Through the Night a bit of fluff with him playing a Noo Yawk gangster who foilds a Nazi spy ring (Peter Lorre is his usual great self, too). At one point, he mis-pronounces Dachau and pleads ignorance about what’s going on in Europe. After being exposed to the evils of Nazism, he denounces someone for not fighting for what they believed in. It’s a classic bit of “Isolationism bad, intervention good” that permeates Hollywood movies of the early 40′s.
