I probably can’t make you all get what a special experience it is to hang here. I get the Danish Kiwi POV, the Aussie Cat POV, the Boston, Miami, Minneapolis POV.

Honestly? I’m a sad little provincial existence. I did my world traveling young, and people tried to kill me. Sorry, I lost interest.

But here’s this amazing opportunity to meet people from pretty much everywhere. And those of you who are not americans? The fact that you care enough about what the fucking shining city on the hill used to be about makes me smile, and makes me care even more.

Oh yes. Now the brown-tinged Norwegian stuff is Linie. Its point of difference is that they seal it up in barrels and load the barrels into various nooks and crannies of the container-ship Tampa, which sails down to various Southern Hemisphere ports and then back again; the idea is that the double exposure to the heat of an equatorial crossing makes the liquor all smooth and mellow. You may think that “mellow akvavit” is an oxymoron, but that opinion does not deserve to be dignified by a response.

Incidentally, this is the same freighter Tampa that picked up 438 Afghani refugees from a sinking ferry in the Indian Ocean, back in 2001. This won a UN Nansen Award for the captain and crew… it also got the ship boarded by ~~pirates~~ Australian SAS troops because the Aussie government of the time was afraid of Afghan cooties. But I digress. Anyway, you can drink Linie and tell yourself that you are merely paying homage to a noble humanitarian act.

For reasons of personal ancestry, I normally drink the Danish Aalborg stuff. They make a Tafel Akvavit for ~~breakfast~~ ordinary drinking and a Jubileum for special occasions. To tell the truth I prefer the Linie, but personal tastes must take second place to heritage.

Tragically, the company that had the license to import Aalborg products into NZ has stopped! They reckoned there was not enough of a market. So right now I’m drinking Bommerlunder, which is actually a German akvavit… though it’s made in Flensburg, which is practically Danish anyway. Indeed, if you’re travelling in that part of Germany, a lot of the cars proudly show the Danish flag on their bumper-stickers, along with the words Sydslesvig, on account of many families still not coming to terms with the Prussian annexation back in 1848. The irredentists have their own flag and their political party is guaranteed a seat in the German Bundestag.
But I digress. What I meant to say is that Bommerlunder just doesn’t taste quite right… I reckon they put fennel in it (blargh) as well as Cumin.
