My brain figured that since the Concorde was a supersonic plane, and very much a descendant of the Avro Vulcan, that the Vulcan was supersonic, too.

Not wishing to be pointedly snarklicious, but Concorde was only a descendant in regards to the Vulcan in that they both had wings. Otherwise there is little relation between them.

Hey, the Vulcan was less of a total loss than the XB-70. The Vulcans were kept for over 30 years, and actually USED. Once. To drop ONE bomb on the Falklands. With no less than 11 other planes used to refuel in en route.

Muy bad. I had been trying to make the point that the only industry in America worth a damn in terms of quality is the weapons business. And as a consequence the rest of the world is passing it by in every other department. Especially autos.

Interestingly, the British experience is the American in miniature. Thatcher invested heavily in the military sector in the 80s to make us a huge weapons exporter. The result is that the Chinese now own our car industry (they literally moved it, tools, bricks and all to China!) and our civil aviation business has diminished to a miniscule stake in Airbus.
