Now that Toyota has plants in West Virginia, Alabama, Indiana, California, and Kentucky, I guess they are one of American life’s institutions. At least on a par with German-owned Chrysler. (Q: How do you say “Daimler-Chrysler” in German? A: The “Chrysler” part is silent.)

I read a recent account of the military industrial complex that neatly pointed out that while the US was investing its technical expertise in military fields in the ’50s and ’60s, Japan was quietly beginning to exceed the US in the quality manufacture of automobiles and electrical goods.
This is why today the US is expert in building stealth fighters no one needs, but Japan beats domestic manufacture when it comes to reliable, economical and safe autos.

Toyota may make reliable cars, but they, too have given Americans exactly what we want: giant gas-hogging sedans and trucks. My favorite military aircraft is the XB-70. The reason why is because it’s the epitome of the huge waste of the American MIC. Basically, it’s the world’s only supersonic bomber.
It was supposed to deliver nuclear bombs as fast as possible… except that nuclear ballistic missiles had been well developed by that time, which travel at many times the speed of sound (even the “clunky” Nazi V-2s could reach speeds of Mach 4.5). And while the XB-70 could travel at Mach 2.2-3.0, it had six very loud engines and the front intake had a radar cross section of the frikkin broad side of a barn. In other words, it was terribly obsolete several years before it even rolled out of the hangar.
Only two were produced: one of them crashed, and the other one has been tucked away at the USAF museum in Dayton, OH.

The line workers couldn’t re-design or source other parts, so unless the car was literally “falling apart” because the union worker on the line didn’t properly assemble it, whatever was wrong with it basically didn’t have dick to do with the union guy on the line, did it? It was the CEO types that decided “let’s build shitty cars” and gave the directive for cheap designs and cheap parts, wasn’t it?
