Didn’t they have the lion’s share of the market back then?

Posted at 23:03 by Sadly, No!

Because there’s nothing we like more than kicking a dead lion, we bring you David Frum:

For example, one of the great concerns that America felt in the late 1970s … it wasn’t just that government was failing in the late 1970s. All of the institutions in American life were failing. The car companies were failing. [...] Today, 2008, almost all the institutions of American life work brilliantly. [...] You take delivery of your new car — it works.

Let’s see: GM is on its way to become the second largest carmaker in the world, Ford doesn’t even want to predict its market share for 2008, and Chrysler is on its third (?) “turnaround” in the last 10 years.

Ford’s share of domestic sales of its U.S. brands slid 1.6 percentage points to 14.8 percent as Toyota rose to second in the U.S., and GM dropped 0.8 point to 23.5 percent, according to Autodata. [...] The combined monthly U.S. market share for Chrysler, Ford and General Motors (GM) domestic nameplates is estimated to be 50.7 percent in January 2008, down from 51.8 percent in January 2007 and down from 51.9 percent in December 2007. [...] Cerberus Capital Management, Chrysler’s new owner, doesn’t publish financial data, but Daimler did and the company losses may have exceeded $1.6 billion in 2007. (1, 2, 3)

Or is Toyota considered one of American life’s institutions?

Now that Toyota has plants in West Virginia, Alabama, Indiana, California, and Kentucky, I guess they are one of American life’s institutions. At least on a par with German-owned Chrysler. (Q: How do you say “Daimler-Chrysler” in German? A: The “Chrysler” part is silent.)

Too bad that they’re stretching out the payment period longer and longer so that people can still afford to buy these cars.

If by ‘brilliantly’ he means that ‘all the institutions of american life’ have all gone supernova, I’ll buy it.

But, as Cher said in regard to marriage, ‘Who wants to live in an institution?’

And just how much does it help the economy when the only car most of us can afford is not so much domestic or imported as ‘used’. Nobody anywhere is building ‘used’ cars, but it’s the only brand I can afford.

I read a recent account of the military industrial complex that neatly pointed out that while the US was investing its technical expertise in military fields in the ’50s and ’60s, Japan was quietly beginning to exceed the US in the quality manufacture of automobiles and electrical goods.

This is why today the US is expert in building stealth fighters no one needs, but Japan beats domestic manufacture when it comes to reliable, economical and safe autos.

Indeed! Our military is able to respond to any threat anywhere at a moment’s notice, able to bring the full weight of our superior firepower to any crisis!

Our public education system is surely #1 in the world? (I haven’t checked, but David Frum is a big supporter of the U.S. Public Education system, isn’t he?)

The U.S. infrastructure is well-funded, with the sturdiest roads, water systems, and bridges! From levvy to damn, from overpass to city streets, it all works brilliantly!

Every American can enjoy top quality health care with equal access and billing whether you’re a regular Joe or a Rockafeller!

Certainly, no one can dispute the legacy of product safety from our government, keeping us safe in the meat and produce we eat, the cars we drive, the toys we buy for our children!

Yes, from the doctor’s office to the schoolyard to the grocery store, and all the driving in between, the instutitions of American life are precisely where you’d expect them to be after 12 years of Republican governance! Why, even the American dream of owning your own home is healthy and thriving!

And that’s to say nothing of our proud American traditions of democracy, liberty, privacy, integrety, and decency. The names of heroic Americans proudly working in government to protect and butress those institutions ring out, from Sen. Duke Cunningham to Alberto Gonzales. Men like these have crafted policies and customs that truly work brilliantly to reflect American values!

And most institutions involved in Wingnut welfare seem to be doing just fine, but I am reluctant to apply the word ‘brilliant’.

Chrysler is no longer owned by Daimler. It was sold to Cerebus Capitol Management.

Toyota may make reliable cars, but they, too have given Americans exactly what we want: giant gas-hogging sedans and trucks. Few of the Toyotas I see anymore (except for the insanely expensive Prius) get more than 20 m.p.g. on the highway, and if you think American manufacturers are the only ones leaning on the EPA, then you’ve got another thing coming.

I mean I think the underwater city is cool and all, but I’d really prefer to live on relatively dry land. I’m not asking for sugar plums dancing around, or everything to be made out of chocolate, or anything like that. But if they can churn out a new universe while sitting on the can, so to speak, can’t they churn one out that is slightly less crapulous?

Maybe this can be covered in the new book; Conservative Communism, from Masterpiece Theatre to Kate O’Beirne’s Sandpaper Snatch.

My favorite military aircraft is the XB-70. The reason why is because it’s the epitome of the huge waste of the American MIC. Basically, it’s the world’s only supersonic bomber.

It was supposed to deliver nuclear bombs as fast as possible… except that nuclear ballistic missiles had been well developed by that time, which travel at many times the speed of sound (even the “clunky” Nazi V-2s could reach speeds of Mach 4.5). And while the XB-70 could travel at Mach 2.2-3.0, it had six very loud engines and the front intake had a radar cross section of the frikkin broad side of a barn. In other words, it was terribly obsolete several years before it even rolled out of the hangar.

Only two were produced: one of them crashed, and the other one has been tucked away at the USAF museum in Dayton, OH.

Speaking of American automakers, there’s nothing I like better than to have some wingnut deliver to me, in person, the shibboleth about how “the unions put themselves out of business by making crappy cars!”

That conversation goes something like this: nutter says the offending phrase I’ve related above, I respond with “oh, really, so when you were driving down the road, pieces of the car were falling off?” Nutter looks surprised and says, “uh, no, they just broke down all the time – they were pieces of crap!” “That they were,” I concur, “and you think the guys on the assembly line were responsible for designing them poorly and specifying cheap parts?” “Uh…no,” nutter replies, with a puzzled look. “Well,” I continue, “you ARE aware, aren’t you, that the engineers who designed the cars and the bean-counters who spec’d cheap parts to bump up the profit margin aren’t members of the autoworkers union, aren’t you?” Nutter now looks completely flummoxed and continues to splutter about how the unions were “building shitty cars.” Again, I agree, yes, they did “build shitty cars” but that’s what they were being paid to build. The line workers couldn’t re-design or source other parts, so unless the car was literally “falling apart” because the union worker on the line didn’t properly assemble it, whatever was wrong with it basically didn’t have dick to do with the union guy on the line, did it? It was the CEO types that decided “let’s build shitty cars” and gave the directive for cheap designs and cheap parts, wasn’t it?

It’s right about at this point when their heads explode.

Aren’t you going to kill us, Gary?

Anyway, I found this while search for my favorite bad 70s car:

Without a doubt, the Matador Coupe’s 1974 launch was laced with uncertainty on the economic front. This involved problems that had all the auto producers in dismay. Most significant were the gasoline shortages that lasted from January to March. This caused a boom in small car sales as larger sized cars sat in storage lots. Massive layoffs and plant closings followed, meaning disastrous second and third quarter financial reports. Interestingly, the bottom also fell out of the imported auto market in 1974, as their sales performance closely paralleled the domestic auto models. In other words, both domestics and imports were seriously affected by energy shortages, rising inflation, and the deepening economic recession. The 1974-75 downturn caused by the sudden quintupling of energy prices provoked greater interest in more economical vehicles. During 1975 consumers shifted their buying preferences to a decided preference toward imported cars. No longer did the sales performance of imports roughly parallel the domestics as in prior years. The imports were not only stingier in fuel use, but now also became more fashionable. This new consumer preference caused the imported auto market share to boom. Imports jumped over eighteen percent of the total U.S. sales in 1975.

How far past the next election will Frum stick by a sentence like this?

Just as far as all those pious Republicans did with their concern for the rule of law, which died the second GWBush was sworn in.

Toyota may make reliable cars, but they, too have given Americans exactly what we want: giant gas-hogging sedans and trucks.

This may be changing: the Honda Fit, the Toyota Echo, Scion et al. And the Big Three in Detroit make, to be honest, pretty decent cars for the non-US market. It’s just that Ford, for instance, can’t bring the European Focus and expect it to sell in the US market.

Stryx, I had the pleasure of driving a near rusted out 70’s vintage AMC Hornet Sportwagon back in the early 80s.

As bad as that car was, it still looks good compared to the concept of “President Bush”.

Everything H.L. Mencken said about the American people is now mere understatement.

We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

You know, I’m not a right-winger, I’m not deliberately malicious, I take no pleasure in attacking or hurting people; but I’m not a pacifist either, there are things worth fighting for. After eight years of Bush we have just cause to be angry, to be aggressive, to repudiate the policies this administration has adopted. Further, I think a lot of Democrats and people farther to the Left agree with this assessment. There are times to get mad and speak up, speak out and this is one of them. The passive – almost whiny – tone of the Democratic response isn’t a selling point.

Alas, it seems that she has passed out cold, nose wedged between the G and H keys, wine-colored spittle trickling over the space bar.

And by “M” I mean “A” as in Althouse. Fuck, I quit.

Hey, its all over now and really no one else was posting anything at all (except Liberal Masochist who was doing the same), so where’s the harm?

Anyway, sorry if I was being annoying.

in America we’ve allowed ourselves to become just and only consumers. That’s our culture now. If it’s good for the economy Right Now then who cares what it’ll do in 25 years? That’s our government- Economy. That’s our civilization- Economy. That’s our God- Economy. This outlook was created by companies like General Motors. Now their being hoisted by their own petard. The movement got bigger than even them. In this roaring insanity of growth above all and irregardless of consequences, in this spirit of getting not just rich, but wringing as many billions as you can from everything, no stone left unturned if there might be an extra penny under it, you can bet there will continue to be casualties.

LFL, I for one appreciated yer liveblogging up-to-the-minutes. Don’t mind the curmudgeons (though I respect all of their poinbts-of-view, esp. Mikey’s).

My brain figured that since the Concorde was a supersonic plane, and very much a descendant of the Avro Vulcan, that the Vulcan was supersonic, too.

Not wishing to be pointedly snarklicious, but Concorde was only a descendant in regards to the Vulcan in that they both had wings. Otherwise there is little relation between them.

Hey, the Vulcan was less of a total loss than the XB-70. The Vulcans were kept for over 30 years, and actually USED. Once. To drop ONE bomb on the Falklands. With no less than 11 other planes used to refuel in en route.

Yes, thats how bloody-minded Thatcher is.

Though for those of us Britons following the war at the time, it was a masterpiece of propaganda.

That said, Thatcher is satan herself.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the way to murder a thread.

Muy bad. I had been trying to make the point that the only industry in America worth a damn in terms of quality is the weapons business. And as a consequence the rest of the world is passing it by in every other department. Especially autos.

Interestingly, the British experience is the American in miniature. Thatcher invested heavily in the military sector in the 80s to make us a huge weapons exporter. The result is that the Chinese now own our car industry (they literally moved it, tools, bricks and all to China!) and our civil aviation business has diminished to a miniscule stake in Airbus.

Concorde used a later version of the Olympus engine, and they tested it on a Vulcan. But that’s about it, yeah.

And they didn’t even shut down the runway. Put one bomb on target – one! out of forty-two! – and the Argies filled in the crater and flew out of Stanley throughout the war.

    Typical bloody useless crabs.

Well I never! If you can’t appreciate the combination of exquisite engineering, inspired cleverness, and pure insanity that is the Arcane Superbomber, well, I…I have nothing more to say to you!

Were we still talkin’ about Japanese toilets or supersonic bombers? I’m just saying that Arcane Superbomber is a badass name for a toilet.

It’s not so much about appreciating the Arcane Superbomber, but since this is gawd’s most-favored nation, we should be using Divine Superbomber

The fact is, liberals have no interest in working hard or bettering their situation like we do here in the heartland.

It’s true. We get by on our good looks, hot bodies, and trust funds.

Personally, I burned up my trust fund GETTING my good looks and hot body. I’m always the best looking person in the food stamp office/abortion clinic.
