Clueless is as Andrew does

Homer Simpson:

It’s so easy to miss Canada, tucked all the way down there.

Andrew Sullivan:

MARRIAGE IN CANADA: Another province, the Yukon, grants gays the right to civil marriage. [Emphasis added.]

Is Andy jealous because W hasn’t proposed to him?

Even when Andy’s right he’s wrong, the Yukon is not a province, it?s a territory.

Well details, like reality, often escapes Andy?s attention.

And I see that’s why you highlighted it.

    Me clever.

To be fair for Andy’s sake (oh god this is going to leave a bad taste in my mouth), even the Globe and Mail this very morning described the Yukon as the fourth _province_ to sanction gay marriage. So he may have just been paraphrasing an otherwise reputable source. Right, wrong, it’s kind of a silly issue to be so nitpicky about. Personally (and as a syrup-blooded Canadian citizen) I think they should all be called provinces.

To be fair to our vicious attack, the opening sentence of the source Andrew linked to (CBC) is:

The Yukon has become the fourth jurisdiction in the country to legalize gay marriages.

Why can’t you Canadarians just call ‘em States, like God intended? No wonder you let the queers get married: you’re all heathens. Must be those long, dark winters that mess with your heads.

Ugh, I cannot believe that I am about to say something in the defense of the Creature From The Blog Lagoon… but isn’t this about on the same level as referring to Pennsylvania and Massachusetts as “States”?

referring to Pennsylvania and Massachusetts as “States”?

It’s closer to the level of calling Washington, DC a state.

No. While they call themselves Commonwealths, they are two of the Several States from the Federal POV. This is more like calling Puerto Rico a State…

I wish we would just add the provinces (and territories) to US and be done with it.

In general, it would help the blue state count and help balance off the South.

“sanction” is one of those funny words in English…

it actually has two completely opposite meanings.

It can mean ‘to grant authoritative permission or approval’.

It can also mean, ‘a penalty for noncompliance’.
