Powerline: The Yeek That Never Stops
Marvel once again as John approves of a Bush speech, then jumps up and down with steam shooting out his ears:
Bush Takes His Case to the People
I was not able to watch President Bush’s speech tonight, but have read it. It was, I think, a great speech. Once again, the President, instead of retreating in the face of his enemies, has upped the ante and taken his case to the people. President Bush laid out the case for engagement in Iraq in a way that most will find compelling. And he postured the surge as an opportunity for pro-war and anti-war factions to unite:
Brilliantly, Bush is ‘posturing’ pro-war and anti-war people to unite behind his plan to keep having a war. What are his cowardly, sneering enemies thinking after this master stroke? Something deranged, as always — but always more deranged than last time, since everything in America is always simultaneously getting hugely better and horribly worse:
One more thing about the Rasmussen poll: thirty-seven percent of respondents have a favorable opinion of General Petraeus, while eighteen percent expressed an unfavorable view. Think about that for a moment: how in the world could anyone have an unfavorable view of David Petraeus? Whatever one thinks of Iraq, the man has devoted his life to serving his country. He is a brilliant soldier as well as a brave one. The eighteen percent that disapprove of Petraeus must define the portion of the country that has gone stark, raving mad. One might say that they have progressed beyond Bush Derangement Syndrome to a Generalized Derangement Syndrome.
Dude, at least we aren’t masturbating during blogger conference calls:
John McCain was “feeling it” during his blogger phone conference today.
This has been today’s Powerline moment.

Could disapproving of General Petraeus possibly have something to do with, say, his performance? Or his decision to schmooze right-wing radio hosts in the middle of a highly controversial campaign that he was supposed to be commanding and observing with utmost impartiality and independence?
Is it the fact that after returning from his ‘mission’, he gave a presentation written by the White House that he was supposed to be independent of? And perhaps the fact that he followed that up by giving a PowerPoint presentation on the war to one of the most infamous Bush stenographers on a channel noted for its hyperactive Bushite partisanship — laughably referred to as an “interview”?
No. It must be loony moonbat derangement. Of course.

Hey, me and the rest of the guys at the office liked it, and I don’t see why we wouldn’t be a statistically scaled representation of the rest of the country.
“Think about that for a moment: how in the world could anyone have an unfavorable view of David Petraeus?”
We have a problem with his job performance, not him. Why these two seem to be intertwined to Powerline, we’ll never know.
Though, I’m certain that a good half hour’s google search could yield any number of reasons to not like the man on a personal level.

Apparently it helps to have worked with, or under, the man, since it was his co-workers who first used the “Betray-us” moniker. Of course, cheating on one’s peers and shitting on one’s subordinates is the current Oval Office definition of ‘management values’, so it’s no wonder the Wingnut Welfare lampreys had the orange-dusted fingers on their copy&paste macro button even before His Chimpness had skulked away from the podium.

And just so you know even more, folks here are intelligent and informed, so we actually know about Peak Oil and the ramifications thereof. Some of us, lordy lordy, even read topical sites on a semi-regular basis. But here on Sadly, No!, folks like to settle in and have some political snarking, okay? And who made it so fucking hellish, Gary? Your fucking hero, George W. Total Fuckhead Bush, that’s who. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people would still be alive.
And you are disappointed when he tells you the truth instead of what you want to her.
Fucking Petraeus wouldn’t know the truth if it stuck its tongue up his arse and wiggled it. He’s a lying sack of shit who bends over for anyone in charge. His own senior says that about him, so you can’t blame that on Teh Scary Libruls.

There’s one sure-fire method to gauge American’s support for Bush’s strategic blunder in Iraq – reactivate the Selective Service System. Let’s see how much support there is for continuing the fight when everyone’s balls are on the line. Odds are that the GOP Chickenhawks would pull out of Iraq faster than closeted GOP politicians are abandoning our public bathrooms.

And, Gary, an alliance between communists, Islamo-Fascism and the American Left. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. So, when did the commies start supporting Islamofascism? Was it in the ’40s, when they supported Israel? Was it in the 1950s and 1960s, when they supported secular socialist rebels in Arab countries against Islamic nationalists? Or in the ’70s and ’80s, when it fought a protracted war against Islamic fundamentalists in Afghanistan? Or was it the start of the 1990s when they came down hard against Muslims in Chechnya? Maybe it’s today, when they treat Muslims in China like second-class citizens.
Meanwhile, of course, the western democracies have NEVER done anything to promote hardcore Islamic fundamentalism, not the Americans in Afghanistan or the British in Egypt or anything of the kind.

Bryan McN, I’d be all for some serious gloomin-n-doomin over the oil thing. I read Clusterfuck Nation every monday, and I find myself looking over the back lawn wondering how defensible it is if those guys from Mad Max start trying to steal my precious fuel. And I’m here to tell you, these fucking suburban enclaves are are simply not designed to withstand massive social upheaval and chaos. We’re wide fucking open. Nothing that a wise investment in armaments won’t help, but still, this fucking landscaping and cheap styrofoam walls don’t make it easy.
We are well and truly fuxx0r3d with the oil thing, given the economics of the situation. That’s really why we’re in Iraq: to buy us a few more years sucking on the oil pipe (and allowing Big Oil to thicken up a layer of subcutaneous profit to shield them from the extreme chill of our coming winter of discontent. Or something.)
I’m pretty sure Megor McCheese has a solution though.

Gary –
Dunno if you were asleep, head up ass or what during the 80s, but…
Communism knew it would fail in a military struggle with us, so it cultivated other methods, subversive alliances, fanning the flames of MOslim discontent, feeding hate America worldwide.
Back in the 80s, St. Ronnie of Dementia was the one who gave aid&comfort to the Muslims. What? you say, this cannot be.
Dude. Afghanistan. The moral equivalent of the Founding Fathers. Freedom Fighters. We gave them weapons and training back then so they could expel the Russians (and as I’m in Moscow right now, working with several veterans of Afghanistan, I can tell you that they were not very pleased with our little adventure in selling Stinger missiles and tons of explosives and ammunition to the Afghans).
One of the biggest success stories of the CIA training? Guy by the name of Bin Laden.
Yeah, that bin Laden.
So the idea that the Soviets were training the mujahideen to kill Americans is pretty much totally fucked, you idiot. It was the other way around.
And then, as so very many stupid-ass ideas by naive and arrogant conservative Republicans do, it turned around and bit us in the ass on 9/11. The invasion of Iraq is going to do so, only on a much, much larger scale, over a longer period of time. Get used to a much lower standard of living, dingbat. The money done gone away, spilled on the sands of Iraq, and it’s not going to be around to spend on education so America’s kids can remain competitive. Or to fix the infrastructure (BTW – making a cellphone call here in Moscow? Easy. I get 5 bars on the Razr, even when I’m a mile underground on the Moscow Metro. Meanwhile, back in LA, I can’t go thru the La Cienaga pass without dropping a call.)
And I just realized that this is going to have no real impact on you whatsoever, reason does not penetrate the Stupid Zone of Denial that you have erected. Which, I guess, makes me the real idiot here.

Yes, the President did make much ado about a short period of moderate progress in Iraq, but as McCain said, “The Democrats refuse to acknowledge any progress at all…” There has been a little progress attributable, at least in part to the surge. Why is it so difficult for Democrats to admit it? Me thinks it’s pride.
And why is it so difficult for people who are against the war to go out of their way to offer statements of support to the military. Reject the mission if you must, but please don’t reject the military. I don’t think it’s time for them to come…
