Magazine – The Light Pours Out Of Me (4:40)

The Raspberries – Go All The Way (6:39) [Added because an odd continuity suggests itself.]

McGeoch was born in Greenock, Inverclyde, but moved to Manchester when he was a teenager. It was whilst living in Manchester that McGeoch became interested in the growing punk scene and learned how to play guitar. The first guitar riff he learned to play was apparently “Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream.

That’s funny. My first riffs were Sunshine of your Love and The Light Pours Out of Me.

God, that song takes me back. I remember blasting it out of my freshman dorm window one fine spring day. It’s still prominent on my iPod, along with a bunch of other Magazine tunes. (I am angry, I am ill and I’m as ugly as sin. My irritability keeps me alive and kicking.)

Say, does anybody know if Howard Devoto’s post-Magazine/pre-Luxuria solo album ever made it to CD? I can’t find it anywhere.

To continue my misuse of this forum for my own psychotherapy, The Raspberries “Go All The Way” was on the radio when I was at my most insane. With a headfull of bad medicine and a fear of sleep, of people, of everything around me and an utter unwillingness to admit I might need a little help, it was these big guitar lines that would cause that part of the back of my brain to short out, and hilarity would ensue. Well, if your definition of hilarity is people getting hurt and shit getting broken, and me either leaving town in the dead of night on my scoot with the headlight off, or being driven to the county line in a marked cruiser, beaten soundly with sap gloves and told never to come back.

Either way, it was a fun time for everyone!

    Dan S:
Yes it did make it to cd- in the UK. There are two available on Amazon.com right now. Rumor had it that a new reissue in the US was planned.

Hey Dan Someone, that’s my favorite Magazine tune, but the money lyric for me is:

I used to make phantoms I could later chase
Images of all that could be desired
Then I tired of counting all of these blessings
And then I just got tired

    Cool vid. Thanks Gavin.

Love the Magazine, although in terms of favorite lyrics it’s hard to forget “I will drug you and fuck you/under permafrost.”
