Oh, please, Devil’s Advocate, enlighten us as to what would be sad about the death of Fred Phelps, a man who’s spent the last 15 years of his life dragging his nasty brood around to intrude of the grief of families by behaving like a heartless douchebag? Some people become a nuisance by vandalizing their neighbors’ property for kicks. This guy got off on vandalizing people internally. How many hundreds of people had to put up with his crap over the years? How many parents, coping with the loss of a child (which, having seen what my mother went through when one of my brothers committed suicide, FUCKING HURTS LIKE NOTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE) had to walk by a bunch of assholes waving signs around saying their kid’s in Hell? And for no reason other than sating his sorry-ass ego (like a lot of religeous cult leaders, he loves himself more than his God.) ‘Cause they sure weren’t trying to win converts to their fucked-up religeon. What could be a less effective enlistment tactic?
Maybe you’re holding out some hope of redemption for him. Unfortunately, I have zero confidence in his capacity to seek any.

Nah, I would. I find it depressing as hell to know there’s folks like Fred Phelps in this world, so full of hate and anger and rage, and whatever pain’s causing has led him to completely warp the minds of his children and grandchildren. Think about growing up with that much hate in you. You know these aren’t happy people. You know there’s so little joy in their lives. I mean, I had it relatively rough growing up, but I knew there was love in the world and there could be love in my heart. The Phelpes don’t know or have that, and were they to get hurt or die in one of their hate-filled little displays, they’d never learn they don’t have to live their lives that way.

That makes me sad. For what it’s worth, I feel the same way about Ace of Spades or one of those guys, though I freely admit I think the entire lot of them are complete and total douchebags of the highest order. It depresses me to know they don’t have to be that way but, because of the hate, they’ll probably never change.

Why bother bother with rote memorization of meaningless and banal Biblical passages when little Billy and Missy can learn how to make pipe bombs to be flung at godless hippies in the name of Jesus, America, and King George W.?

Here in Philly people went bonkers when the F Troop of jihadists, the infamous Dix Six, were busted a few weeks ago. And these morons had yet to even purchase their weapons or make any bombs.

The press coverage so far over Uhl has been remarkably restrained. Isn’t that curious?

The symbolic value of a dead Phelps, based purely on its value to a lunatic reactionary martyr cause, would make me sad.

A dead Phelps, by itself, would make me less sad.

It’s very similar to how David Koresh or Jim Jones’ deaths make me sad. Not because they especially warrant the Sad Face by themselves, but because their value as batshit iconography is too much to stand.

Personally, I suspect Phelps was just protesting Falwell’s funeral to wrench the withered black soul from the corpse and use it in his dark necromantic arts in order to continue extending his unnatural life and dark brood, but that’s me.
