Bomb Plot Thwarted at Falwell’s Funeral
Student Arrested With Homemade Bombs, Three Other Suspects Sought

Even in death, the Rev. Jerry Falwell rouses the most volatile of emotions.

Authorities arrested a Liberty University student for having several homemade bombs in his car.

The student, 19-year-old Mark D. Uhl of Amissville, Va., reportedly told authorities that he was making the bombs to stop protesters from disrupting the funeral service.

The devices were made of a combination of gasoline and detergent, a law enforcement official told ABC News’ Pierre Thomas. They were “slow burn,” according to the official, and would not have been very destructive.

“There were indications that there were others involved in the manufacturing of these devices and we are still investigating these individuals with the assistance of ATF, Virginia State Police and FBI. At this time it is not believed that these devices were going to be used to interrupt the funeral services at Liberty University,” the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

Three other suspects are being sought, one of whom is a soldier from Fort Benning, Ga., and another is a high school student. No information was available on the third suspect.

The victims would most likely have been Fred Phelps’s crew, who were planning to disrupt the funeral (.pdf) with their famous God-hates-X iconography, accusing Falwell of being soft on fags and thus writhing in Hell, or some variation of that basic line.

Honestly, in contemplating Fred Phelps getting blown up by a right-wing terrorist while waving anti-gay placards at Jerry Falwell’s funeral, ‘a tragedy averted’ is not the phrase that comes most readily to mind.

On the plus side, not even Debbie Schlussel is likely to shriek, this time, that the alleged bomber is a stealth-Muslim exhibiting ’sudden jihadi syndrome.’

Then again, she’s surprised us before.

Update:
Yup, the bombs were intended for Phelps’s people. (Our site clock is on German time, by the way, which keeps us from ever getting credit for anything.) And okay, tell me if I’m just some crazy person here, but it’s starting to seem almost as though the WingNet is less than excited by these right-wing terrorism stories. Conservative commentary on the Falwell napalm plot currently rounds to zero.

What’s with these people? This story has everything! Boom, Hollywood script. Cash money.

FADE IN EXT. MEDIUM SHOT FUNERAL OF JERRY FALWELL:

Phelps: “God Hates…”

NAPALM EXPLOSION, FUNERAL IN FLAMES, FALWELL’S CORPSE FALLS BURNING FROM CASKET

Onlooker: “Aieee! Everyone’s on fire!”

FADE OUT.

Is that not movie magic?

    More bias by the press.
    WHAT ABOUT ECO-TERRORISM, DAMMIT?
It’s only bad for white people to be violent when they threaten our nation’s sacred accumulated capital, like SUV dealerships.
This is just dedication to a cause mixed with harmless pranks.

On the other hand, what are the odds a Liberty U student would be able to successfully build…. anything?
My guess is said bombs were huge bags of bang-snaps and/or smoke bombs.
Or do they sell fireworks in that state? Probably. So bottlerockets with the tail snapped off.

All Christian terrorists, no matter how well-connected to national networks (e.g. Eric Rudolph), are acting independently and do not represent Christianity. All Muslim terrorists, even if acting entirely on their own, are members of Al Qaeda and just another example of how the religion of the moon-god is a death cult.

A couple of tidbits on Uhl. From the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star (7/7/06):

Liberty High School recognized the following students at a special ceremony.

    […]

    Mark Uhl, Liberty University Scholarship.

And from the Fauquier Times-Democrat (11/1/05):

Every summer, Liberty High School’s Army JROTC Battalion send cadets to one or more JROTC summer camps. These camps are one week long and focus on enhancing the leadership ability of the cadets who attend. Liberty sent cadets to two camps this summer, one at Fort A.P. Hill (June 18-25) and another at Fort Eustis (Aug. 5-12).

The cadets going to the A.P. Hill camp were … and Mark Uhl.

    […]

The cadets attending the Eustis camp were … Mark Uhl …

    […]

Cadets who successfully complete these camps receive promotions and individual awards upon their return to Liberty when the new school year begins. These cadets use their newfound leadership potential to help the battalion in the years to come.

9 parts gasoline (higher octane is better, you can get avgas at the local muni airport) to one part ivory liquid, shaken, not stirred, is the well known formula for homemade napalm. Perhaps everybody’s stuck on the belief that in order to be effective bombs need to go bang. In a large gathering, like, say, a funeral, napalm dispersal will cause more, grievous casualties than low velocity explosions, even with lots of shrapnel. It sounds to me like they had a specific plan, and quite possibly the right weapons for the job…

    just sayin…

It’s not unusual for Troopers to sit on the boarder to NoCal, WV, and Maryland around that time of year and others to catch people bringing illegal fireworks into the state.

Police Say Falwell Protesters May Have Been Targets of Bombs

Campbell Co., VA – At about 11:30 Tuesday morning protestors from Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church began to line the streets with signs. Police kept them in a gated area across the street from the Church.

    […]

Campbell County Deputies say 19-year-old Mark Uhl, made five bombs at his home in Fauquier County, put them in his car’s trunk and drove them down to Lynchburg. The sheriff says Monday night, a relative borrowed his car, saw the bombs and called police, and that’s when they arrested Uhl. They believe it was the protestors he had an issue with, but they’re still not clear of his intentions.

Sheriff Terry Gaddy, Campbell County – “The way it’s being described is more of a napalm bomb, like what was used in Vietnam. This is a product that sticks and burns at a high rate so again, you know you might have to talk to someone in EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] to find out exactly what they would do but very dangerous.”

Three other people are being questioned about the bombs. Uhl is charged with manufacturing an explosive device, a felony in the state of Virginia.

So for that reason alone its a good thing this little plot was foiled. We don’t need his little band of lunatics waving “FRED WAS MARTYRED BY TEH FAGGOTZ!” signs at every funeral for the next 10 years.

And yet, I also have to agree that I get a tiny smile of amusement at anyone saying Falwel went to hell for being too soft on gays.

This Christian guy died, and a whole bunch of other Christians were going to mourn him, but these other Christians didn’t like that Christian guy, because he wasn’t Christian enough for their Christian beliefs, and he didn’t hate the Christian enemy, the fags, enough. So in order to stop those Christians from being an annoyance at the funeral for this Christian, this other Christian decided he was going to make some bombs and blow up the Christians. In the name of Christ.

In other news, Islam is SO not the religion of peace. That title is reserved for the Amish. And they will fuck up ANYONE who tries to take it away from them, bitches…

A dead Phelps, by itself, would make me less sad.

It’s very similar to how David Koresh or Jim Jones’ deaths make me sad. Not because they especially warrant the Sad Face by themselves, but because their value as batshit iconography is too much to stand.

Personally, I suspect Phelps was just protesting Falwell’s funeral to wrench the withered black soul from the corpse and use it in his dark necromantic arts in order to continue extending his unnatural life and dark brood, but that’s me.

Nah, I would. I find it depressing as hell to know there’s folks like Fred Phelps in this world, so full of hate and anger and rage, and whatever pain’s causing has led him to completely warp the minds of his children and grandchildren. Think about growing up with that much hate in you. You know these aren’t happy people. You know there’s so little joy in their lives. I mean, I had it relatively rough growing up, but I knew there was love in the world and there could be love in my heart. The Phelpes don’t know or have that, and were they to get hurt or die in one of their hate-filled little displays, they’d never learn they don’t have to live their lives that way.

That makes me sad. For what it’s worth, I feel the same way about Ace of Spades or one of those guys, though I freely admit I think the entire lot of them are complete and total douchebags of the highest order. It depresses me to know they don’t have to be that way but, because of the hate, they’ll probably never change.

Some people become a nuisance by vandalizing their neighbors’ property for kicks. This guy got off on vandalizing people internally. How many hundreds of people had to put up with his crap over the years? How many parents, coping with the loss of a child (which, having seen what my mother went through when one of my brothers committed suicide, FUCKING HURTS LIKE NOTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE) had to walk by a bunch of assholes waving signs around saying their kid’s in Hell? And for no reason other than sating his sorry-ass ego (like a lot of religeous cult leaders, he loves himself more than his God.) ‘Cause they sure weren’t trying to win converts to their fucked-up religeon. What could be a less effective enlistment tactic?
Maybe you’re holding out some hope of redemption for him. Unfortunately, I have zero confidence in his capacity to seek any.
