Is The Air Getting A Little Hot In Here?
The penalty for public displays of affection
By Michelle Malkin · April 16, 2007 11:13 AMLast week, Pakistan’s Minister of Tourism got in trouble for hugging a “foreign man” (her skydiving coach). She faces fatwas and calls for her dismissal.
Guess Richard Gere must have missed those stories, because now he’s in hot water for his PDAs with Indian actress Shilpa Shetty.
Actor Richard Gere has sparked protests in India after kissing Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty at an Aids awareness rally in New Delhi.
Demonstrators in Mumbai (Bombay) set light to effigies of the Hollywood star, while protesters in other cities shouted “death to Shilpa Shetty”.
The protesters said Gere insulted Indian culture by kissing the hand and face of the Bollywood actress.
Next time, do your homework, Dick. Over there, your lips could cost you your head.

Above: Tonight, hundreds of pale, mulleted Malkin devotees will set light
to effigies of Bryan Preston

Dear god in heaven, can she get any stupider!
Shilpa Shetty is not a Muslim, she even attended a school called St. Anthony Girls’ High School.
I know they are all Brown and hail from the East Michelle, but for goodness sake think before you post woman.

Richard Gere would be worth being, um, pillaried for. I miss the days when any Richard Gere movie would mean a peek at Richard’s gear…
The Malkin thing is just Teh Jealous.
That being said, I hate it that women are oppressed in that manner. It’s fucking horrible. But let’s peer into the past… remember when the heavy hand of the Soviet Union made it impossible for the Taliban to treat Afghan women like property? Remember when Afghan women could be doctors, could go about without a male retainer, and in general enjoyed other freedoms we take for granted here? Remember how, under Sadam, Iraqi women could do the same? And then, Michelle Malkin’s favorite peeps did their best to help the Taliban and their good buddy Osama to overthrow the Russians. Then we overthrew Sadam. So, Michelle, how’s that Afghani & Iraqi Female Freedom project going? Not so good these days, huh?
“Oh, look!” Michelle cried. “Shiny object in Pakistan!”

These morons can’t tell a Hindu from a Sikh from a Muslim, let alone a Shiite from a Sunni. Hell, isn’t it true that Shrubya didn’t even know Shiites and Sunnis were sects? The neocons are all idiots. That’s the crux of the matter. When you get right down to where the ursine evacuates in teh forest, we’re facing a possible nightmare future because these people are dumb.
Ain’t that grand?

That picture of Malkin and Preston is disgusting, Gavin. Did it make you feel like a big man when you were photoshopping it? You were gonna get that mean nasty Michelle Malkin and give her what she deserves? Huh, Gavin?
She has children, Gavin. How would you feel if someone did that to your mother? What did Malkin say that made you so angry? What did she say that wasn’t true? What did Malkin ever do to you? Or is this just another expression of your deep-rooted misogyny?
Are you trying to say that we should deliberately insult people when we go to other countries, because like we are Americans and are allowed to do whatever we want wherever we go? Is that the purpose of this post? Fuck Indians and fuck everyone who isn’t Richard Gere because they are all just ignorant dirty little brown people who deserve to have their traditions shit upon because they aren’t white and American? Or are you blaming it on that slut Shilpa? Are you saying that Shilpa is a slut by photoshopping that picture of Malkin to make her look like one to? Or what does Michelle Malkin have to do with this? Is it just because she isn’t white either? Or is it just because she is a woman?

“You are like the Florida electorate who stood by when massive mob of Republican staffers stopped the recount.”
Or.
“You are like the Kampuchean proles who handed out eyeglasses as the killing fields were as yet only killing spots.”
Or:
“You are like the BaHutu who turned up the radio and handed out machetes and put little decorative cockroaches in their windows when the Interahamwe marched the streets.”
Other people are being funny here, it’s the least you could do.

Michelle is right that the fatwas and the effigies are stupid. Unfortunately she could have mentioned (or bothered to find out) that the fatwa was issued from an illegal mosque that is currently being protested by tens of thousands of Pakistanis at this moment. As far as the Gere incident, well, that’s just embarrassing.

Of course, this is a good opportunity to point out just how goddamn offensive it is to those of us who are not religious when religious extremists get to dictate public mores.
I betcha those guys aren’t down with gay marriage or abortion, either. Nice company you have there, religious nuts.
Scott said,

For a society that has been deeply damaged by colonialism can one think of a more offensive image of a white guy grabbing a daughter of India and forcing himself upon her? It is so symbolic. It is right in line with the image of the white colonist forcing himself upon a country and just taking whatever he wants.
Richard Gere should pay the ultimate price for this.
What bothers me however is those who would blame Shilpa Shetty for this.
Too often women victims of rape in India are blamed for what happened like they wanted the rape to happen or it was their fault the rape happened even when the truth might be that the rapists brutalized them and they couldn’t stop the rape from happening.
While of course Richard Gere didn’t actually rape Shilpa Shetty, I still see this whole “Blame the Woman Victim” dynamic in place. From what I saw from the video Shilpa Shetty did nothing to cause Richard Gere to act the way he did, and was in fact as shocked as everyone else was that he would act in such a disgraceful manner.
We need to defend this daughter of India, not blame her for this white man’s assault upon her.

Whoooooaaaa. “Richard Gere should pay the ultimate price…” whaaaaaat??? You are really saying that he should die, be killed, for kissing a woman on the face? Jazuz, seeing a rape in this picture is stretching it a bit. Assault? Rape?
Just a hunch here, but I suspect, Scott, that you have issues that really need to be dealt with. Good thing your not near me. What an amazing conclusion. Kill him. No wonder we are the stupidist country that ever existed, with people like “scott” pushing the issues. And he is a saint compared to what we have in washington. I’m heading for the hills. Shaking the dust off my feet as it were for you religious types. Stupid is as stupid does. Scott, you dude, or dudess, whatever, are really stupid on a human level. unfuckingbelievable.
