Good point; it’s sorta between ‘occupied’ and ‘have a strong military/strategic presence’, but from the POV of the Iranians I’m guessing it falls closer to the ‘occupied’ side of things.

It’s a little-known fact that, once you’ve seen bits of Polish airmen hanging from trees, having talks not go the way you want them to is nothing to complain about.

Ah yes, that will be the Britain which sent its navy to the other side of the world to defend a few sheep in the Falklands, the France that sent paratroopers to Cote d’Ivoire to defend a handful of citizens and the Germany that fucking launched two world wars.

VD Hanson is doing more projection than a 24-theater megaultrasuperplex here. We’ve been trying our darndest to provoke them into doing something to give us an excuse to bomb the bejeesus out of them for the last two or three years now.

VDH is suggesting that since Iran appears to want the bombing, we can’t give it to ‘em.

On the other hand, if they don’t want it but we force it on them, then it’s an exciting and alluring option.

For today, Victor Davis Hanson has invented the ‘I-Know-You-Are-But-What-Am-I Doctrine’. Equally as useful on the kindergarten playground as it is at the highest levels of foreign policy. As a bonus, it goes hand-in-hand with the ‘Am-So!’ theory of tax policy recently put forth by Rudy Giuliani.

This should coincide nicely with President Bush’s “No, YOU Shut Up!” domestic policy initiative, Tony Snow’s “Moron Says What?” press conference strategy, and the Project for a New American Century’s “Who Asked You?” democratization initiatives.
