Sad, Joe. Really, Really Sad.
It’s official, folks. Joe Lieberman is now a bigger loon than Sam Brownback. Check out their debate this morning on the Senate resoultion condemning Bush’s troop surge:
LIEBERMAN: I fear that while this resolution is non-binding and, therefore, will not affect the implementation of the plan, it will do two things that can be harmful, which is that it will discourage our troops, who we’re asking to carry out this new plan, and it will encourage the enemy, because as General Petraeus said to our committee, war is a test of wills, and you don’t want your enemy to be given any hope.

BROWNBACK: I don’t — I don’t see this enemy as needing any more emboldening or getting it from any resolution. They’re emboldened now. I was there two weeks ago in Iraq. I was in Baghdad. I was in northern Iraq. This is a very aggressive situation. You have sectarian violence of Sunni and Shia. I was in the Kurdish area. They were talking about we have to get the Sunni and Shia together. I talked with the head of the Kurdish group. He said he wouldn’t vote for more troops because you have to first force the Sunni and Shia to sit down and talk about a political accommodation and that’s not happening.
I can’t tell if this little exchange has given me newfound respect for Mr. Brownback, or if it has simply flushed my opinion of Mr. Loserman further down the toilet.

Since my hatred of Joe really can’t get any worse (that’d put him into George W. Bush/George Steinbrenner territory… I don’t hate no one more than those two), I guess this means I have more respect for Mr. Brownback than I did yesterday. Also, I’ve heard he’s done some nice work on the Darfur crisis, so that’s a feather in his cap as well.

I wish the republican party would choose an animal other than the elephant to be associated with. Firstly, George Bush has put endangered animals at risk (and his VP favours shooting wingless birds in canned hunts), and second, the elephant is one of the most magnificent mammals on the planet, embodying the best, and only rarely the worst, of human qualities. It saddens me to see the elephant in the photo above being used to mock scum like Lieberman.

My take on this, without seeing more of the debate, is simply that Brownback, christopathic though he might be, is uninterested in merely regurgitating the blast-fax talking points from the White House. He’s actually looking at some sort of evidence (gasp!) and . . . wait for it . . . thinking about what it all might mean. Doesn’t make him any less of a scary theocrat — but it might make him ethically superior to Lieberman, that cheap trollop.

I don’t have sufficient processing speed on this rig to find out one way or the other, but there’s some question as to whether Brownback was responding directly to Lieberman, or just shooting down the “emboldening” nonsense in general. Not that it affects your basic thesis.

Before the latest election his fax machine was loaded with a giant roll of thermal paper.
I think that it’s that his IQ is nearer 100 and he’s seen the writing on the wall before the rest of the herd. I don’t see any ethics, just pure political calculation. It just happens that Brownback and Lieberman are gambling on a different outcome, and I’ll have to give the odds to Sammy on this one.

To be fair, Lesley, Brad is using the elephant dung implied in the photo to mock Holy Joe (the elephant, if I understand the metaphor, is the GOP). While elephant dung is, arguably, one of the most magnificent mammal poops in the world (you can make paper out of it and you can use it to
piss off Rudy Giuliani and Bernard Goldberg), I’m quite comfortable comparing Joementum with this.

Yeah, Sam Brownback “Mountain” is insane. But not as insane as Joe Lieberman.
Does that mean I’d vote for Hillary over Sam? No. But I might vote for Sam over Joe.
Of course, in that latter scenario, I think suicide might be the only palatable option.

I know you didn’t. It was more of a “crazy madman yelling at the world” moment, rather than “crazy madman yelling at you specifically”.
And I agree. I’d much rather deal with folks to are honest about their wingnuttiness, than those who try and hide it in terms of moderation. Easier to debate, and much less whining about being “misunderstood”.

Brownback is running for preznident on the Repub ticket, and all the positions from center-right to farther-right-than-Genghis-Khan have been staked out by other Repubs. Standing up against Teh Surge gives him a little novelty value, at least. Holey Joe, on the other hand, is not going to be running for office for another five years… unless, of course, he can triangulate far enough to the right that St. McCain or one of the other Repub primarians taps him for the VP role. (And after all the good Joe did in that slot for Gore’s campaign, any Repub would have to be insane or desperate to do that, but Joe prays every night to the Political God of Insane Desperation, so… )
