RNC asks Steele to replace Mehlman

November 10, 2006Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, whose party just lost both chambers of Congress, will leave his position in January, and the post as party chief has been offered to Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele.
“It is true,” Mr. Mehlman told The Washington Times when asked about reports last night that he would resign. “It’s something I decided over the summer. No one told me I needed to. In fact, folks wanted me to stay.”
Mr. Mehlman said he “told the White House over the summer it was my decision” to leave the RNC post, “win, lose or draw.”
Uh-huh, assuredly, yes. That’s totally it. Right. Yeah, truly, uh-huh. Wow.
Not to say that this has anything to do with it, but the biggest closet in Washington just got a little pinchy. If Mr. Mehlman is retiring to spend more time with Scott McClellan’s family, as it were, that’s one fewer potential scandal hanging over the cynically gay-baiting Republican Party, which…
But that’s importunate. Perhaps it’s simply time for a bold nude erection.
This, on the other hand, is interesting. Watch how Karl Rove’s fabled whackadoodle mojo seems to be waning:
Other Republican Party officials said some Republican National Committee (RNC) members, including state party chairmen, have mounted a move to have Mr. Steele succeed Mr. Mehlman.
But they said that President Bush’s political adviser Karl Rove, who is Mr. Mehlman’s mentor, would rather see Mr. Steele serve in the president’s Cabinet, perhaps as secretary of Housing and Urban Development. These officials said no one has actually offered Mr. Steele either the RNC post or a Cabinet post.
We’ll see who wins this one. (Steele reverse, bitchuzz!11)

Steele ran such an upright, strong, and successful GOTV campaign that he is a natural to continue Karl Rove’s Weak, Opaque Myopia.

Michael Steele as HUD Secretary is an interesting concept, though. He could find homes for all those homeless people who passed out pamphlets that said “Vote for Democrats” and had Steele’s picture on them.

Can I just take a moment to note that saying someone “outed Ken” is pretty much like suggesting Kerry “outed Mary Cheney”? You’d pretty much have to be one of Ken’s former or current male lovers for this to be in any way significant.

I really can’t believe the Republicans could be stupid enough to put this guy in charge. I mean, there was a time, not too long ago, when I thought that at a minimum these guys had good judgment when it came to how to win elections.
Bussing in homeless people to pass out fliers in the black community claiming you’re a Democrat… and now he’s in charge of the party? Good luck with that outreach program, friends.

It reminds me of what David Rakoff said about his coming out. Everyone reacted with about as much surprise as if he had revealed that he was a dark-haired white guy. Come on, Ken! It won’t hurt a bit, really.
