More Shocking Foley E-Mails Revealed
As I’m sure you all know by now, Florida Republican Congressman Mark Foley has resigned in disgrace after the press got ahold of several sexually suggestive e-mails he’d sent to a 16-year-old page. While this development is shocking in its own right, sources close to Sadly, No! have sent us a series of even more shocking e-mail exchanges. Apparently, Foley was also in frequent contact with a 12-year-old Netvocates employee and Sadly, No! troll named Gary Ruppert. We will reprint these e-mails for you here.

Actually, I agree with you. I don’t think the evidence is that Foley is a pedophile, if we are being exact in our terminology, but an ephebophile, someone attracted to post-pubescent teens. Which, I guess, is the lesser of two evils, but still unquestionably creepy: first, there is the whole power issue–Foley is considerably older and a congressman, which means he can weild a lot more power, or make the kid thing he has more power, than the 16 year old. Already the issue of consent is raised, because of both the age and power differences. If the guy wasn’t guilty of hitting on a kid, he’d be guilty of sexual harrassment. In this case, he might be both. Pederasty might have been OK in ancient Greece, but so was raping your wife and owning slaves.
Ahem.
Secondly, there’s just something really creepy about a significantly older person being attracted to someone who is barely old enough to drive. I say that with a fiance who is eight years older than me–and even then, age difference is sometimes a little weird (he was in high school in the 80s; I was watching the Thundercats). Again, it’s either a power play, or the person is so emotionally stunted that they can’t be around people their own age. At which point, the person needs a shrink.
Having said that, even if the kid is technically legal in some states (leaving aside the whole stupid differences between when a girl is legal, when a boy is legal, and when a homosexual boy is legal, which is complicated in itself) doesn’t mean Foley should have EVER have been head of a commitee overseeing child sexual abuse, or ANY TYPE OF SEXUAL ABUSE. I mean, WTF? Foxes! Henhouses! What the hell is wrong with these people?!?

#1: The Republican Leadership did not know of the IMs until this Friday. And when they found out, they told Foley to resign.
#2: The E-mails have been known to the press for almost a year. Yet they refused to do anything. The Republican Leadership investigated this matter and found that there wasn’t enough evidence to do anything.
#3: The Adam Walsh Law does not apply ex post facto to communications from 2003.

#1: The Republican Leadership knew about the e-mails AND that the page and his parents had complained, which is enough to order an investigation. Or a cover-up, it seems. Apparently it was well enough known that “[o]ne former page [told] ABC News that his class[2001-2002] was warned about Foley by people involved in the program.”
#2: Hastert knew, then didn’t know; Boehner told him, then didn’t tell him. They never fully investigated, they hushed it up, purposefully kept it from the only Democratic member of the committee, protected the guilty party, then lied when they got caught. Some people might think that shameful; not our Gary!
#3: The point is what he did would be a felony under a law HE got passed, which is a little bizarre, even you must admit.

But the one thing that people still refuse to acknowledge as the greatest threat to the US happens to be China. And just a word of advice from someone who’s been around the block a lot: Generally, when people are messing around in conversational speech (like, oh, I don’t know, on a satire site), correcting their grammar or rhetorical structure just gets you branded as an asshole. Wait until you walk into a party and people start complaining that they have to start using “whom” now because you’re around. It’s the best way to lose that party girl reputation, trust me.

I suspect that his closeted homosexuality lays a very big role in what he did. He is embarrased of what he wants, and he knows openly living it would destroy his reputation with his constituency. So he targets the young, impressionable, and, most importantly, intimidatable (Kaye can’t TOUCH that comma usage, baby!) children he has contact with. He’s probably not a pedophile, except by the standards of his own legislation, but he does want absolute dominance and the appearance of devastating retribution over his victims.
Were he not closeted and self-loathing, he may have long ago found his way among his peers, and have been as repulsed by the idea of seducing young boys as we are right now.
However, given the circumstances and repetitive nature of his crimes, only one punishment would seem to fit – baliff, whack his pee-pee.

Its not a question of sympathy. Its a question of pathology.They don’t deserve sympathy, since they made their choices and chose evil with their eyes wide open.
Being able to understand why they chose that way is important to understanding the entire story, and may be part of preventing it from happening again.
For instance, I think it strikes a major blow against the idea that outing closeted politicians is wrong. People with that much power shouldn’t also have deep secrets they are afraid of having revealed, because they will almost certainly be willing to abuse that power to protect those secrets.
