Vote ye bastards!

Today in our crazy Belgian time, it is Tuesday November 6th, which means for those of us stuck in the Dadaist States of America, that it’s election day.

Which means, for the love of Bob, if you haven’t already voted early, you need to get the fuck out and vote. I know, you don’t need me telling you this and frankly, you’re probably wondering where the funny is. Well, I’ve got a treat for you, but you need to wander through a few more paragraphs of this bullshit first, because fuck you, that’s why.*

I know Obama is a sorely disappointing moderate and that you probably live in a state not called Ohio or Florida. But frankly, that doesn’t really matter. The GOP nominated The Smiler, openly stated they didn’t believe in democracy, have straight up brought back Jim Crow era disenfranchisement, and I fully expect a wingnut Secretary of State to be caught just straight up editing vote totals in Microsoft Excel before Tuesday is through.

Because they simply don’t give a fuck about pretense. They want to blow it all up and are hoping that raw money, media ownership, and the still lingering racism of that tiny core of bitter white men is enough to buy them a few more years to rob the last remaining shreds of this country before they retire to Europe to start tearing that continent apart.

In short, shit matters. And we not only need to ensure that the dog-torturing Transmetropolitan villain is sent back to his hair-buffing factory in Utah, but that we run up the popular vote. We need to ensure that we have as many Democrats as possible to disappoint us in slightly more sane ways than the nihilists in charge of the GOP lunatic asylum.

And beyond that, if you haven’t already, you need to research all the local and state bullshit before heading out tomorrow. So you can snipe the various wingnut welfare schemes and backdoor attempts to fuck you over and you can find those few glorious good candidates or props you can feel good about supporting until you see them bloodied and beaten by the NIMBY crowd.

Because, as is going to be more and more clear in the coming years, the wingnuts have realized they are running out of time on the Southern Strategy, on holding back decades of progress, on mattering as anything other than KKK re-enactment guilds. And they are declaring war on the notion of democracy, on the notion that we simple freaks should even count in “their” America, and on even continuing the pretense that the Civil War ever really ended.

And I can’t think of a more delicious way to punch that shit back in their face than to take this election where they have given themselves infinite money, full complete control over the airwaves, open disenfranchisement of minorities, open electoral fraud, straight-up terrorist intimidation of valid voters, etc… and just simply overrun them with votes to the point where they couldn’t possibly hope to steal it.

And as a bonus, it gives you an excuse to leave early or show up late to work! Both, if you’re a smooth talker!

I am Cerberus and I approve this message.

What?

Sigh. All right.

So, as has been much enjoyed here on the site, wingnuts have taken to claiming that polls are a liberal lie like global warming or the roundness of the globe. Now the reasons for this are myriad: cognitive dissonance, earnest belief that reality has a liberal bias, cognitive dissonance, a setup for four years of whining that ACORN and New Black Panthers stole the election so impeach the president, cognitive dissonance, an inability to do anything but work the refs, cognitive dissonance, attempt to provide wiggle room for open election night fraud, cognitive dissonance, and of course, cognitive dissonance.

And of the various wingnut poll-denialists, none as been quite as “Bookmark it Liberals” as the lovely folks at Unskewed Polls, who on October 25th helpfully provided a handy picture for psychologists to use as shorthand for delusional schizophrenia:

Yeah, that’s Oregon and New Mexico turning red in pure embarrassment for the poor deluded Troofie wannabe who runs the Geocities wannabe site that’s become a darling to all the octogenarians who want to pretend that they’re even remotely a majority anymore.

Well, in a shock to end all shocks, it turns out that despite years of evidence to the contrary, wingnuts are, in fact, capable of embarrassment and shame.

I know, I’m just as surprised as you are.

But still, here’s the same deluded loser, refreshing his “final” map on October 28:

That’d be the graphical equivalent of a teenager clutching their diary to their chest and slowly walking away as tears begin to overflow their eyes.

I’d feel bad if they weren’t democracy hating, racist, sexist, homophobic sociopaths who would rather see my country destroyed than allow life to get slightly better for the people most fucked over.

So yeah, let’s give them something to “bookmark”, shall we?

Here’s a word of advice on local elections from my father the lawyer: Always vote against judges any time they come up for election. Barring a scandal of some sort, they always win, but a lot of negative votes will give them something to ponder.

Seriously, research the local shit. People leaving that off is how we get people in charge of schools who think Jesus rode dinosaurs and people on city councils who think the biggest problem facing the city is that the homeless population isn’t harassed enough. Not to mention the various wingnut giveaways waiting to drain the state budgets and ensure the states have to gut unions and schools to “make the tough choices”.

And if you have a lazy liberal buddy who “isn’t sure” they want to vote this year, drag them out of the house, possibly at gunpoint (or since we’re effete liberals, butter knife point).

If you have a conservative buddy, Cask of Amontillado the fucker.

    Substance-

That’s some good shit, right there.

    My favorite mango:

Romney is going to win, big time. Why? I can tell you in three syllables and a few numbers. The syllables are: Ben-gha-zi.

We so too can make Iran-Contra strike twice just by wishing hard enough. Sure, yeah, Reagan stole that election by conspiring with two foreign powers to prolong a major international incident and this is nothing like this, but uh… um… er… WAAAAAHHHH!

    Second Favorite:

Who is going to win the presidency? I don’t know. Furthermore, nobody else does either. Everyone is biased; everyone has an agenda. Even those who imagine themselves to be neutral.

No one can know anything! Like, what if America is just a simulation of a dream happening inside a dead God? You don’t know! Ha, my skimming of my friend’s Philosophy 101 notes will surely win me this day!

We have a (state) constitutional amendment on the ballot to allow the Chief Justice to appoint judges over 70 (mandatory retirement) as “Emeritus” judges for 3 months. Since they already do this dance in other branches, I know how it works:
    1) Hire retiree for 3 month “temporary” job. Since the retiree already has bennies, and they’re in a different column on the books, it looks as though they’re saving money. Also not hiring someone who needs the bennies. And the job.
    2) At about the 85 day mark, the “temp” quits, and takes a week or so off.
    3) Hire the retiree …
This has gone on for years for some people. I’m voting agin it. Also agin the one designating no less than 0.5% of tax money going to nonprofits for very general purposes. One source describes it as “walking around money.” Since needed services are being cut or reduced due to lack of funds, I don’t see why we should reduce available funds further.

Loadpants has a hate-on for Nate Silver.

    Some Mangos.

To listen to many of Silver’s defenders, questioning his methodology is akin to rejecting evolution or the laws of thermodynamics, as if only his model is sanctified by the god, Reason.

I wonder: What kind of scholarship do we have to look forward to when, in the words of Krugman, “facts really do have a well-known liberal bias” and a difference of opinion over poll-weighting foretells the end of science?

Yes, poll-weighting is the only difference of opinion Republicans have regarding science.

But I like to think that people are different, more open to reason, and that the soul — particularly when multiplied into the complexity of a society — is not so easily number-crunched. Obviously this is a romantic view out of step with the times. Edmund Burke, the founder of modern conservatism, lamented long ago that the “age of chivalry is gone,” replaced by “that of sophisters, economists and calculators.”

Oh, Jonah is such a romantic. You mean sciency-types are hurting his manly feelings. Why won’t you stop oppressing him with your cold, hard numbers and let the poetry that burns deep within his soul flow forth?

Not my country, not my dog in the fight (except indirectly), but I’m not sure Cerberus’s argument really justifies an Obama vote if you live somewhere safe-blue. By which I mean something like the Unskewed fruitloops’ Blue 179 levels of safe-blue.

A stronger turnout for Jill Stein as an actual real progressive is surely far more important than settling arguments from ignorant Rethugs (who were totally happy with the EC/popular vote split in 2000, let us not forget)?

An Obama EC win is of course far more important than either, and anyone who votes third-party in a swing state wants a kicking.

    Shorter Michael Gerson:

We pundits do TOO matter and if we say it’s too close to call and no one can say otherwise, then NO ONE can say otherwise! Cause our 100% failure method of going with our guts is so too superior to having an actual track record of success if we say so. Also, policy (as an abstract) suddenly matters when we want to distract from how bad we are at even just covering politics as a horse-race.

I mean seriously, he actually blames Nate Silver for useless pundits like himself talking more about horse-race bullshit than real issues like poverty.

It is not going to happen, liberals. Your echo chamber is reverberating now with your shouts of victory before you’ve won a single state. I almost feel badly for you, because when McCain wins, your astonishment will be overwhelming. I say “almost” because your ideology is nasty, anti-free speech, and absolutist, and every decent person will sigh in relief when it goes down to defeat once more.

Here is how it will go down next week. First, the results from Virginia and North Carolina will come in, and they’ll be declared for McCain. You’ll be disappointed, but “no big deal, change can’t come overnight” will be your comment. Florida will go red, and a little nervousness will creep in. The usual suspects will fall into the usual categories. As the night drags on, Ohio, Colorado, and (much to your horror) Pennsylvania will be too close to call.

My advice at this point to you will be to go to bed. You will wake up to a McCain presidency and the Great Liberal Freakout will be on.

[L]ittle did I dream that I should have lived to see such disasters fallen upon her in a nation of gallant men, in a nation of men of honor, and of cavaliers. I thought ten thousand swords must have leaped from their scabbards to avenge even a look that threatened her with insult.

How can I be in America if it’s Tuesday. If it’s Tuesday, it must be Belgium, isn’t that right?

BTW — how much ya wanna bet that Dem wins in NY and NJ will be chalked up to massive voter fraud in the wake of the storm. But if voter turnout amongst people who actually have to work for a living is so low that the GOP wins, the effects of the super-storm will only be noted as a snide aside by a reporter or two and thus be dismissed as “well that’s what the liberal media wants you to think because they don’t know how conservative real ‘Murkins are”.

Full disclosure: my (half) sister-in-law is named Sandy and she was supposed to be in Jamaica when the storm hit there. Which led to lots of jokes around the DAS house-hold about “Hurricane Sandy devastating Jamaica”. Suffice it to say that my wife and her half-sister don’t get along very well.

Completely off-topic — any of you Sadlys know a good place to get help with an XO laptop? My daughter’s XO has decided to insist on logging into any available mesh network and thus to NOT allow itself to log into an AP network. I tried the fix I found to create a file called lbs_mesh in the appropriate directory, but the machine won’t let me write to said directory, even if I am logged in as root and even if I change permissions that should allow me to write in said directory. And the other so-called fix I found just prevented me from seeing ANY network.

The same kind you have now, in which one group looks at real data and the other makes shit up for money, Mr Buy My Book of History Pulled Out of my Ass. And seriously, for Goldbrick to moan about either scholarship or civility after publishing his “the other side are Nazis because VEGGIES!” doesn’t just take the cake, it’s also got the cake stand and the table tucked under its arms while making a break for it.

No but srsly folks. Is there an explanation for the total collapse of the GOP Senate efforts? A year ago it was totes looming large. Dem caucus was defending 23 seats versus 10 on the Repub side. Congressional job approval at the time was hovering at record lows, with Harry Reid garnering the lowest approval ratings of any of the party leaders. Like even lower than Bright Orange Boehner.

But now – a Democratic Senate is assumed – heck even some of the PJMedia Romney landslide folks accept it. 538′s forecast has better odds for a filibusterproof Dem caucus than for a Republican majority. What happened? And how can we ensure that it happens again?

When I fed the ballot into the slot, however, it was rejected. My lines were TOO DARK. They made me fill out a new ballot. Now I’m just creeped out.

How is it not reassuring? For Ohio to even count first Romney has to take Florida, North Carolina and Virginia. Florida really is a toss-up, but Barry is ahead in the polls in Virginia. 538 puts it a t 73% and NC is 3/4 the other way. Barry’s odds of taking at least one of these is around 4:5. There’s an 80% chance that no one will care how close the ballot is in Ohio.

In that final 1/5 of the time, Obama still wins without Ohio if he gets Colorado, Nevada and New Hampshire. All states he is leading the polls in.

And even after all of that, keep in mind that he’s leading in Ohio too.

When I was in grad school at Rutgers, the Green party decided to put a serious effort into running a candidate for mayor of New Brunswick. Of course, J & J and the Democratic political machine did everything they could to keep college students from voting, so the Green candidate had no chance of even making a good showing. And supposing the Green candidate won? Well, what kind of splash is a headline of “college town elects Green party mayor” gonna make?

If the Green party were serious about making a splash, they would have ran a candidate in next door Piscataway, which also has a large population of college and grad student types. But it lacked a single major corporate player to distort voting (it would have been a lot harder for the various actors who wanted to maintain the status quo to coordinate voter suppression efforts in Piscataway in the same way that a public/private partnership “development corporation” dominated by a single corporate interest could coordinate such efforts in New Brunswick). It also had a weakened (a key player in the machine had repudiated her previous — although a friend of mine who knows her said her stance was never so hardline as it seemed — hard-line “pro-growth” stance and became an independent), (relatively) unpopular (I even voted GOP in a local race or two because I agreed with the GOoPers more on local issues than the “pave over the township” machine that controlled the Dems) Democratic machine.

The Greens would have done well in Piscataway (a couple of elections later, a “reformist” candidate won the Democratic primary in next door Edison — even though the Edison machine had long ago cleaned up its act — simply because voters wanted to keep the machine on its toes and keep it from sliding back to its old ways: and the voters in Piscataway were in far higher dudgeon than those in Edison), and it would have been a major story “Greens do well in mayoral election in suburbia!” that would have built momentum for the Greens.

But somehow the Green party wasn’t thinking so strategically. In short, when I was in grad school I learned all I needed to know about the political sagacity and future of the Greens. When I (I get beaten by kids at chess) can do strategery better than someone … well, that means said person really sucks at strategery.

PA pollworkers are illegally demanding photo ID from nonwhite voters

    From Bughunter’s link:

According to the law, poll workers in Pennsylvania can ask voters for ID, but they are not required to show it in order to vote.

WTF? If they’re not required to show it, what’s the point of asking for it?

  177. bughunter said,

    November 6, 2012 at 22:57

WTF? If they’re not required to show it, what’s the point of asking for it?

PA GOP passed a law requiring that the ID be shown, but it was challenged in court, and the (State Supreme Court?) ruled that it was too soon before this election, so the effect of the law is postponed until the next general election. In the meantime, the judge ruled they can “ask” for ID, but not require it… so, guess who they are “asking”…

Of course, how can this selective “asking” not be effective intimidation?

I’ll tell you what, like 40K votes for Romney is what. You won’t be able to call Florida before the morning. We’re looking at recount territory for sure – unless Barry seals the deal without Florida. In this case, it’s like choosing between decent-enough-centrist and a dog-torturing sociopath* who has single-handedly destroyed more jobs than any previous presidential contender (and I include George Washington and his zero-tolerance policy on undocumented Hessian workers).

  363. Dragon-King Wangchuck said,

Okay, I think Florida is going to Barry too. Currently it is essentially tied – Barry has a small enough lead that the zero result from Santa Rosa should cover the difference and then some. BUT the big batch of precincts remaining to be tallied are in Miami-Dade. Something like a quarter to half a million votes still needs to come in.

So it looks like Barry is going to take Ohio AND Florida – which not only wins it, but puts him over 300 Electoral College votes.

I know what you mean. I vote in France, too, and when that election comes around, I’m almost confuzzled about who to vote for. In America, where I’ve lived for the last twelve years, the choice has literally become between Enlightenment values and the fucking Dark Ages, which is the politics I’m used to. France – uh, though some of Sarkozy’s stuff has had me worried, for now at least both major parties still abide by the Enlightenment values and the world we’ve built over the last two centuries.

John Edwards is right – there are Two Americas. The Blue one is bigger than the Red.

It doesn’t occur to these fuckers that their strategies contain the seed of their own destruction. The GOP has always ruled by creating a 50% + 1 majority and setting it at the throats of the other 49% (though rarely as blatantly as Romney did in that video). In the last fifty years, it’s been White Men vs everyone else; in the Gilded Age, it was Northern (or just non-Southern) WASPs versus Southern WASPs and urban immigrants. It works well for a time. Trouble is, the makeup of the country is constantly changing, and if you rule by aggressive division, well, the people you’ve been shitting and pissing on for all these years remember all of that once they become a majority, or otherwise get empowered.

(In contrast to Republican rule-through-division, Democrats only seem to succeed when there’s broad grassroots-based consensus in their favor – e.g. during the New Deal party system in the mid-20th century, and, I believe, the years between Andrew Jackson and the Civil War a century before that. To be fair, it’s hard to argue that our strategy is any more effective than theirs when it comes to keeping power over the long term. But I would argue ours isn’t as inherently self-destructive – we don’t deliberately go out and create our own enemies like they do).

  517. zombie rotten mcdonald said,

Maddow asked the reporter if they’ve been able to get someone from the Romney campaign to come out and explain why they think they still have a reason to contest Ohio.

Mitts giving a very gracious concession speech. The crowd is being civil too. I’m pleasantly surprised.

Meanwhile, on Facebook, the bitch who was encouraging everyone to vote earlier today, it’s the best “revenge” for all they’ve “suffered” for four years, is now whining that it’s not fair how they’re calling states so early when not all votes were counted.

The fundiegelical who yesterday was saying Romney would win because polls be damned, he just had a feeling, is now complaining about how us rubes just don’t understand that we’re on an unsustainable course and he’s very worried.

The peacetime-officer-turned-businessman, surprisingly and uncharacteristically, shuts the fuck up. For now. By far the better course for him. Ditto the Christie/Romney-worshipping 1%er. Though I expect to hear from them by tomorrow.

The cake goes to the Colorado sheriff’s deputy who says he’s sad that this election has driven us further apart (yeah. Blame the guy who wrote off 47% of the country before even being elected, and the bastards who cheered wildly when he did) and that he is “truly shocked” by the results (you wouldn’t be if you ever got the fuck out of that National Review echo chamber and listened to what professional pollsters, people who faithfully called the 2010 election for the Republicans, have been saying for months on end).

God help me and all, but I for one am delighted.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

OBS: Thanks for the compliment! (Or I hope it was a compliment.) No surprise: I voted for Stein, other Green candidate, or for Independents, or write-ins down-ticket.

Re: electing judges. I always vote for wimmin judges, and write in women to replace the men. (I use ACLU pro bono lawyers, just to make sure they meet all the legal requirements.) Women are woefully unrepresented on the bench (at all levels).

He did not blub like a gurl. OTOH, 1/2 the speech was counselling Obama to follow Romney policies (blah blah REACH ACROSS THE AISLE blah blah JERB CREATERS blah blah HONESTY) and it did not seem that he had fully grasped that the voters had *rejected* his policies.

Mixed messages there, accepting Republican framing in places (we don’t want a future in debt) but also mentioning global warming as a Real Thing.

Early voting results indicate he owes the traditional progressive coalition, so let’s hold his damn feet to the stovetop, fuck the ‘Grand Bargain’ bullshit. He’s not been terrible, surprisingly and pleasingly positive in many arenas, and I again have hope. But it’s up to us to tell him what we expect, and grade him on that.

Dickheads.

    from ZRM’s Oscar-nominated short subject:

M: DAMMIT I’m RICH! THIS CAN’T BE HAPPENING.

For weeks now, I’ve been imagining Mitt as Montana Max in “Prom-ise Her Anything”, struggling in the grip of Buster and Plucky and shouting “You can’t do this to me! I’m rich! I’m important! I’m a Republican!”

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government.

    Wikipedia sez (emphasis added):

The earliest known attribution of this quote was December 9, 1951, in what appears to be an op-ed piece in The Daily Oklahoman under the byline Elmer T. Peterson [2]. The quote has not been found in Tytler’s work. It has also been attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville.

So if you can’t brush, chew on that.

I just read a piece on Rove’s inability to accept Fox’s (Fox’s!) call for Obama, and his insistence that nonono, Ohio was going Romney. It occurs to me that he knew the fix was in when it, in fact, wasn’t, thanks to the increased attention Ohio was getting. We may have Husted to thank for not having to go through litigation and uncertainty. If he had been a little less blatant …

  583. philostopher said,

    November 7, 2012 at 21:38

VCarlson — as a long-time Ohio voter, I believe your analysis is correct, it’s what I realized this morning. Husted tripped over his feet so many times, he had multiple noses up his ass by the opening of polls yesterday. Not only that, but when Blackwell tried to do the same thing in 2004, he was more successful because the incumbent was of the same party and could cover his ass. At least Husted wasn’t stupid enough to be in charge of the Romney campaign in Ohio — Blackwell, the Secretary of State and the guy who presided over the 2004 election, was.

And yet Ohioans are stupid enough not to pass a ballot initiative to have a non-partisan committee placed in charge of elections. I wonder what’s rattling around in my neighbors’ heads sometimes …

But I have to say, if you click the link “Do you still think the polls were skewed” he quite forthrightly and graciously admits he was wrong and compliments Nate Silver for calling 50 out of 50 correct. So, maybe not a total poo-head after all. Good on him.
