Leave Joe Paterno’s Victories Alone!

I see no evidence that there is a personal reason Dennis Prager keeps defending child molesters.

Dennis Prager, National Threw(-Up In My Mouth):
Sandusky Abused Children, NCAA Abuses History

Wow.

National Review and Dennis Prager are such a perfect combination of assholes and dickwad that I can’t believe no one thought about thrusting them together before now.

And Prager wastes no time for his douchebag overlords giving us a post that is fucked up beyond repair from the very title.

Yeah, sorry Dennis, but unless “history” is capable of pointing out on the doll where the mean old NCAA touched it, that false equivalence serves no other purpose than to try and downplay the horror of child rape.

But then as a regular defender of the Catholic Church, he already knew that.

Shorter (or the last port before Jungle):

  • Hey, I know Joe Paterno deliberately ignored one of the worst child rape rings in college history in order to protect his “legacy”, but destroying that legacy or acknowledging the existence of non-white, non-straight people in history is the real unconscionable crime.

Now, someone not familiar with the concept of IT’S ALWAYS PROJECTION might find it rather odd that someone who claims that their main objection to homosexuals is protecting the children would be so blase about so many acts of child molestation and rape.

Similarly, someone might question why someone who claims to be Jewish would spend so much of their time trying to erase all Christian wrongdoings when they weren’t busy screaming at the Jews about how they are going to Hell for being such historic untermenschen.

In fact, some might even find it bizarre that someone with such a lax attitude towards the truth and historic precedent can pretend to be a staunch defender of history without bursting into flames.

But “luckily” for us, we’ve been there and bought the t-shirt so we are able to “appreciate” this steaming pile of hogswallop on a whole ‘nother level.

One of the NCAA’s punishments of Penn State was the vacating of all its football team’s wins from 1998 through 2011. It was in 1998 that Penn State coach Joe Paterno and university officials became aware of the accusation that assistant coach Jerry Sandusky had showered with a young boy.

Oh was that all? Why, at that point, the horrific continued abuse stretching across 15 years and painfully ignored by the school to protect the reputation of the moralless scumbag who hired him becomes almost meaningless.

Like a bad dream invented by leftists to punish successful conservative icons for understanding that as long as the kids are sacrificed to the “good of the institution”, that rights all wrongs.

Hell, it becomes something morally righteous. Obviously Sandusky was just following the holy parenting advice of James Dobson when some unruly moral relativists decided to make a giant deal of it.

I mean it’s not like Sandusky did anything wrong, like be a homosexual or support women’s rights or some other unquestionably evil thing.

As a result, Penn State’s 112 wins are no longer wins, and Joe Paterno is no longer the coach with the most wins in college-football history. Instead of 409 victories, his record shows 298.

Before explaining why this decision is morally wrong,

Morally wrong.

You’re about to explain how this decision is morally wrong…

Yeah, no. Even people who felt the decision was harsh understand it is made from a damn righteous moral position. Penn State and its megalomaniacal coach made all of their decisions in service to their rugby with pads program.

And their decisions were monstrous, actively burying investigation, covering up incidents, ignoring complaints and warnings all because they viewed meaningless stats like “most winningest coach” trumped not only things like the school’s academic programs, but also basic human morality.

It’s the exact sort of thinking that had the Catholic Church going all in as child molestation defenders out of fear that doing the same actions that schools and children’s groups used to root out abusers would “weaken their moral authority”.

It would have been criminal for the NCAA not to have meted out the strictest punishment possible including erasing those precious “titles” as a direct warning to other colleges who might forget their first priority as a school athletics program.

But really, what does all that compare to the fact that Joe Paterno had a really long career as coach and won a bunch of meaningless games? I mean, I relentlessly watch young men straining against each other until I can’t sit comfortably, but I’ve never been invited to a Penn State locker room. So why won’t the mean NCAA think of my needs?!?

I should note that I consider what Jerry Sandusky did to be an indescribable evil. I recognize that Joe Paterno and the university officials enabled this evil to continue. And I do not take issue with the other NCAA punishments of Penn State.

Apparently a paragraph and a half into his whining breathless rant about how mean the NCAA was being to his erection and mindless worship of “sports heroes” regardless of their off-field actions, he suddenly realized that it might possibly look bad openly defending the man who has recently come to represent everything wrong with modern collegiate sports.

And so we get this.

Really, if this hadn’t just come off a paragraph trying to minimize years of child rape into one single instance of “showering with a young boy”, it would still seem like disingenuous ass-covering.

If I had recently suffered a blow to my head, taken a kilo of mescaline, suffered a schizophrenic attack, and been mind-wiped by a cult, I still wouldn’t be able to see this act of desperation as an earnest acknowledgment of what happened.

Dennis Prager can’t even fake humanity.

But it is worrisome that there has been virtually no outcry against the terrible wrong committed by the NCAA’s rewriting of history.

Well, maybe that’s because most people are able to genuinely acknowledge the years of buried child molestation and don’t view it as a minor distraction deserving a brief hand wave and nothing more.

It comes with said people having squishy human body parts unlike the scaly interiors your band of reptilian aliens possess.

It’s the same body parts that regards abuses against actual breathing living people as more important than fictional abuses against pure abstractions. You know, the same thing that causes people to cock their heads sideways when you try and argue that actual living gay people need to continue being oppressed to protect mere words from having to suffer the indignity of having to grow the fuck up.

Unless Joe Paterno and Penn State won those 112 games illegally or immorally, they are wins.

Except they were “won” illegally AND immorally. To protect their winning program and avoid having to lose their former assistant coach and the impact that might have on program enrollment, status, and player motivation, they committed the CRIME of criminal conspiracy in aid of child molestation.

Hell, if it turned out Joe Paterno and Penn State really were unwitting dupes who knew nothing of Sandusky’s one man terror campaign, those wins probably still should have been voided because of the impact Sandusky had.

But once it turned out that Paterno was feeding kids to Sandusky just to protect his run for “most winningest coach”, you’re damn straight it needed to be stripped and burned.

The only problem is that Paterno didn’t live long enough to see his “precious legacy” shredded before his weeping eyes.

No amount of wrongdoing by anyone at Penn State allows anyone to change history. This is another example of how the road to hell is paved with good intentions — in this case, punishing Penn State and teaching everyone how terrible covering up child abuse is.

I fear for any children Dennis Prager may have or come into contact with.

Not because “ooh, he’s defending child molesters, he must be one”, but because he lacks any ability to acknowledge how it could be a crime.

To Prager, child molestation might as well be an unfortunate cough. He literally can’t understand why everyone is picking on this poor molester and the people who protected him.

Oh sure, he recognizes that he should be against it in the abstract, but his protests are inherently hollow because they carry no recognition. Half a second after going “oh yeah, child molestation is bad, isn’t it” he’s right back at whining that actually addressing it is Hitler Times 15.

He may not be a molester himself but he sure as fuck identifies with them more than he does the rest of us.

But really, we’re only halfway through this post, how’s Denny going to stop himself from ranting about how a couple of kids is a small sacrifice for a really kickass Rugby with Pads team?

n our generation, we have seen truth not merely reduced as a value; it has been more or less removed from the list of virtues. History is increasingly what politically correct people want it to be.

I smell a key change coming up.

In California, the country’s largest purchaser of school texts, elementary- and high-school students, by law, must learn about the contributions to California and America of women, African Americans, Mexican Americans, entrepreneurs, Asian Americans, European Americans, American Indians, and labor. This year the California legislature passed another law — the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful Education Act — which mandates teaching the contributions of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people.

Silly California, when will you learn that women, blacks, latin@s, asians, native americans, people who work, and the queers is just something that bitter liberals invented in the 1960s in order to pretend that judeo-christian capitalism had a downside?

Next you’re going to tell me that there is such a thing as a “Constitution” and it doesn’t actually consist of the lines “Read the Bible”, “Everyone’s allowed infinite guns without regulation”, and “Conservatives get to win at everything, so there” printed over and over again.

Also I saw that hidden little elbow jab in there, Denny. Yeah, I don’t think all the hysteria in the world about California is really going to distract everyone from the fact that Texas, the “other” big textbook purchaser, has been trying to openly rewrite history to make it “more conservative”. But nice attempt anyways.

Also, I think you haven’t quite gotten used to your move from Townhall, yet. You don’t actually need to break into a bout of unrestrained racist dog-whistles every third paragraph to retain your reader’s attentions. Every fifth paragraph will suffice for the “intellectual” sort of reader who makes the National Review their home.

That American history is dominated by the contributions of white Anglo-Saxon Protestant males is irrelevant to all those who see history as a feel-good exercise, not the relating of what actually occurred.

Ha, I bet you thought when I said that all those minorities were inventions by 60s hippies, I was making a comedic exaggeration.

Nope, that’s pretty much his actual argument during this “moral relativist”-related tangent tantrum.

Because the rewritten history of his youth erased any mention of the actions of anyone who wasn’t a WASP straight male, then WASP straight males must not have been a part of history.

Now whether or not Prager is smart enough to realize he argued that minorities didn’t exist in his defense of racist education is something up for debate. But still, even if you were to argue that say China’s development of explosive technology centuries ahead of Europe or the role of the poor in the French Revolution were meaningless compared to memorizing orders of succession in European kings, you’d be hard-pressed to argue they weren’t “part of history”.

Well, unless of course you were, like Prager, trying to erase their contributions and existences so as to justify continued oppression and erasure of non-white, non-male experiences.

Did I mention before how perfect a fit Prager is for the National Review? Cause, it’s really uncanny.

As the 325,000-member California Teachers Association, which has contributed so mightily to the decline of education in California, stated in support of the LGBT bill: “We believe that school curriculum materials should adequately portray the diversity of our society.”

It is a rather impressive demonstration of the principle of “team loyalty” that the declaration of those underpaid, overstressed public servants known as teachers as “public enemy number one” has caused barely a flicker among the 27%.

Of course teachers are evil and responsible for everything wrong with kids today. If they weren’t then Rush and the National Review wouldn’t say they were.

I swear. The 27% would burn their own houses down if Fox News told them to.

In other words, according to California’s teachers, the purpose of education is not to teach truth, it is to “adequately portray the diversity of our society.”

Cause acknowledging reallity is totally antithetical to the truth.

Well, not the “truth” so much as the Truth! The Capital letter Truth that doesn’t have to pretend to give a shit about minor little things like being, you know, true.

You’ve probably seen the Truth if you’ve ever had more than a 15 minute conversation with a Fundamentalist. Compared to its raw truthiness, things like “facts”, “reality”, or “basic common sense” are distracting fruit flies from Satan come to shake one’s righteous conviction in The Truth.

The Truth is responsible for a lot of the crazy we skewer here on Sadly, No!

In defending the new California law, Dean Vogel, president of the California Teachers Association, said, “There is no room for discrimination of any kind in our classrooms, our communities or our state.”

But, by definition, history does discriminate.

Not… really…

Historians can discriminate. Do discriminate. Have regularly decided that the sociopolitical circumstances that make events happen pale in comparison to memorizing the reign dates of political leaders. Have feared that acknowledging the actions of women, minorities, non-white cultures, or the poor might enflame said groups and “brainwash” said groups into immoral actions against them. Have resisted acknowledging atrocities where doing so might conflict with existing prejudice.

Cause see, history itself isn’t really a “do discriminate” or “don’t discriminate” sort of thing. That would require some level of humanity.

History instead is merely a compendium of records. At its most abstract and in terms of its goal, it’s the record of everything that has ever happened in human accomplishment, from the actions of great generals in decisive battles to the actions of a single peasant farmer. At its most human it is merely the tool that is created, a book of decisions by historians who decide by their culture what “matters” and what “can be forgotten”.

Now, to Prager, all that matters is what the historians who taught him thought. To him, feminists, racial historians, and queer historians aren’t trying to expand the record of history at its most human to more resemble history in the abstract, they are attacking the only history that matters.

That said history was a heinous rewrite on reality matters none. All that matters is that it was what he learned and to undo it would be to acknowledge that said groups have existed throughout time and weren’t just a recent invention by agitated hippies.

And yes, I realize this is all a long way to go to say “IT’S ALWAYS PROJECTION” and Prager is pissed that his attempts to rewrite history in his group’s favor are being countered by “opponent” groups.

A history of classical music will discriminate in favor of Austrians and Germans. A history of jazz will discriminate in favor of blacks. And a history of the founding of America will discriminate in favor of WASP males. Otherwise they are not histories.

I’m honestly torn here.

On one hand, I want to go on an epic rant pointing out that Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Dave Brubeck may beg to differ on classical music and jazz history being wholly Austro-Germanic or African-American in focus. Especially as I could note that actual historians who aren’t racist apologists throwing a fit at the mention of perceived Untouchables actually are rather open to noting how other cultures impacted the growth of what we consider classical music. Not to mention that jazz historians are often quick to note the connection of African-American jazz with Jewish history and mythology and the way early jazz musicians viewed their struggle as African-Americans as parallel to that of the Jews. And that’s before we even get into the whole “founding of America” being entirely the action of WASP males shit and the way it willfully ignores the impact the slavery debate had on how our nation began.

On the other hand, I feel the gaping need to counter the whole “Great Person primacy” bullshit that is at the center of this tangent. History is certainly taught in terms of “Great People”, i.e. a handful of names and dates that are seen as the only things that matter. But that approach completely ignores that history isn’t about a handful of people, but rather the way things happened, changed, moved. It’s a record of our social evolution and reducing it to the “Cliff Notes” version erases a lot of the meaning of history. Reduces complex sociopolitical events and warnings into “Robespierre didn’t like Louis XVI and had him beheaded”.

Cause see, Jazz isn’t “African-American” because a lot of black artists performed it. It’s African-American because of its African roots. It’s African-American because of the Bebop revolution and how it took back jazz from the white musicians who watered it down and co-opted it to make it safe for white audiences. It’s African-American because of its connection to 50s and 60s counter-culture and the political relationship it shared with the Civil Rights movement. It’s African-American because of the way it allowed black artists to break into the mainstream without having to co-opt their identities as black musicians. It’s a long story of a genre of music that black musicians were able to prevent being re-co-opted for one of the longest periods of any “black music”, lasting from Bebop to when “Smooth Jazz” yanked it once again out of African-American hands and back into the hands of “safe” white musicians.

Ignoring that history and making it all about “Charlie Parker and Miles Davis” allows shit like this where people argue that because the history books talk about George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, they were the only assholes who mattered.

But hey, weren’t we talking about Paterno and child molestation before we started ranting about how if history books mention Harvey Milk, it personally poisons history’s dog?

Whatever evil Joe Paterno and Penn State officials failed to stop, the 112 wins are wins.

Failed to stop? Complicit in? Same difference.

Where will the NCAA draw its line?

If we say it is okay to null victories gained while engaging in criminal conspiracy, what’s to stop us from deciding to assassinate poor-performing coaches or having a team bus blown up for unprofessional conduct?

It’s a slippery slope!

Just like everything Dennis Prager stands on.

Maybe Dennis would find those slopes less slippery if he didn’t insist on masturbating on them before trying to climb them.

What other wrongs that have nothing to do with victories on the playing field will the NCAA address by nullifying the hard-fought wins of innocent student athletes?

Innocent student athletes molested by Sandusky and ignored by Paterno. Truly they are the greatest victims… of the NCAA.

Cause see actually trying to protect student-athletes from cynical programs who are more than willing to sacrifice them personally in service to meaningless stats is way more evil than infringing on those All-Holy stat sheets. I mean, they’ll have probably have to add a footnote. Maybe even an asterisk! An asterisk!

What possible namby-pamby victim-oriented liberal pussy culture could possibly think that a few erased childhoods and permanent psychological scarrings could EVER, E-V-E-R counter the violent world-destroying Apocalypse that is the aster…

I hardly can say it, the A-word is just so…

Really the NCAA should be ashamed of itself!

The lesson the NCAA is teaching young people — that history and truth don’t matter if enough powerful people don’t want them to matter — can be as injurious to society as the cover-up was to the victims of Sandusky.

When Dennis Prager finally sheds his fake human skin and begins consuming Earthlings by the hundreds and everyone goes “who could have known”, I’m just going to cough awkwardly and point meaningfully at this paragraph.

And not only to society. To individuals as well.

Thanks to the NCAA’s history rewrite, all those completely innocent Penn State football players who played their hearts out to win those 112 games played for naught. False NCAA history will record that they never won a game.

Okay, you know what?

One paragraph about how the students are really the most hurt group of the NCAA’s delayed response against the horrific destruction of kids to protect a fucking American Football program?!?

Reprehensible and horrific, but not overly remarkable for wingnuts.

Two paragraphs? I start reporting it to the FBI in the hopes that someone’ll rescue his fifth victim in time.

FOUR straight paragraphs?!?

At this point, one of Sandusky’s victims should have burst in halfway through wielding a rusty chainsaw.

I know Dennis Prager was worried he wouldn’t be able to Mark Steyn it up enough, but he is officially trying WAY too fucking hard.

And what about the impact on former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, who is now listed as the winningest coach in American college-football history?

He, unlike you, has class.

Until the NCAA’s revision of history, he had the rather impressive title of second winningest coach in American college-football history. Now, he will be dogged by a permanent, though unwritten, asterisk next to his name.

Oh noes, not teh dreaded ASTERISK!!!

Why his wife will divorce him and his kids will refuse to call home now that he has been upgraded in his accomplishments due to the wrong doings of another.

For someone trying to pretend that “sports fandom” is the sole reason you are driven to reflexively defend child molesters and their protectors, you sure do seem to have an impressive ignorance about how sports statistics and culture work.

No one got pissed at Babe Ruth because of Roger Maris’s asterisk.

If, as the NCAA report charges, Penn State’s silence spoke volumes about Penn State’s culture, what does America’s silence in the face of the NCAA’s falsification of history say about ours?

We, unlike Penn State, the Catholic Church, and people who think it’s their team duties to support both no matter what, think child molestation and the cultures that protect it is somewhat worse and more deserving of punishment than…

Than what exactly? Having to add a few asterisks to some record books? Treating the protection of child molesters in defense of a fucking Rugby with Pads program as something slightly worse than using some steroids? That the NCAA doing something to try and prevent the deification of coaches and football programs to the point that the school forgets its duties to its students and its charges is a GOOD thing?

That maybe if there were more real consequences like this to things these sociopaths care about, then we’ll see less Penn States and Catholic Churches going forward?

That maybe if we listened to those “Political Correctness” bitches and all their blather about history maybe we could have seen the direct parallel between unchecked power and the abuse of the innocent and wouldn’t assume absolute purity of large unshakable institutions simply because they are large entrenched institutions?!?

But then, I guess we’re not self-hating Jews enough to see the real crime in the whole Sandusky fallout.

Sniff-

Asterisks*, how could they be so cruel?!?

‘Shorter’ concept created by Daniel Davies and perfected by Elton Beard. Mos Eisley wishes it could be as much a hive of scum and villainy as the National Review. We are aware of all Internet traditions.™

I think a legitimate alternative to vacating the wins would be to (1) prohibit Penn State from ever again fielding an intercollegiate team in any sport while (2) changing all records after 1998 to include the appropriate variation on the phrase “in a program and at a school run by unindicted conspirators to child rape”. So a reference to Paterno taking a dump would read: Joe Paterno, unindicted conspirator to child rape, took a dump. A reference to the football team would read: The Penn State football team, in a program and at a school run by unindicted conspirators to child rape…

And so on. But they could still proudly refer to their wins, achieved in a program and at a school run by unindicted conspirators to child rape.

Also, FRIST!

Sandusky Abused Children, NCAA Abuses History

Prager saw the NCAA with that history in the shower, and he’s not gonna let anybody cover that sort of stuff up, eh? What. An. Asshole.

And actually, I think not counting the wins where he might have been in prison instead of coaching sounds pretty fair.

this is sheermindbogglingwingnuttiness at its finest…i’m not sure i’m going to be able to fisk any mangoes from this baby…i already feel like throwing up…

Nice to know that the National Review is suddenly against re-writing history.

They’ve re-written enough history to make Stalin blush.

You were hoping for enlightening crap?

bbkf-

Believe me, you don’t want a taste of that particular mango puree. Every tiger in the comments over there is enthusiastically tonguing Prager’s ballsack in their eagerness to show how they’ve hated the NCAA as a band of evil lefties longer than anyone.

I’m pretty sure the right-wing has gotten so evil that they just assume every evil bastard that trundles along is “from their team” from the get-go.

You know what else might happen to those poor students at Penn State? They might start to understand that an institution can be corrupt and harmful and that all a person has to do to keep it vile is not to say anything.

I always wondered what I would say if someone ever told me he had been the victim of rape as a child, and now, thanks to Dennis, I know. I’ll say, “You have to be as brave as Bobby Bowden with his unwritten asterisk.”

Awsome as per usual, Cerberus!

(psst… Louis XVI rather than Napoleon)

sugarpie-

Goddamnit, I always do that. Fixed now.

Shorter Prager : “Surely nobody could have foreseen that pedos would ever fly PENISes into American kids!”

A study of online apologia for failed ideas will be prejudiced in favour of citations from nroonline.com.

Every tiger in the comments over there is enthusiastically tonguing Prager’s ballsack

really? that makes me sad…i was really hoping to read some serious tongue lashing…but sadly, the sick fucks over there are even sicker fucks than we thought…

It’s the fucking Olympics! I don’t give a shit!

A history of classical music will discriminate in favor of Austrians and Germans

Someone is not clear on the concept of “discriminate”.
When, for instance, an advertisement for an academic position states that successful applicants will have to be intelligent, it is not discriminating against Prager.

A history of classical music will discriminate in favor of Austrians and Germans

Only a pedant would point out that there was no such thing as Germany during the classical-music period, and no Germans — only Prussians and Bavarians and Austrians and what-have-you.

Prager is laying the groundwork, here, for the next pedo-gate scandal to hit his church.
Heh Heh “Rugby with pads”, Cerberus is an agent of provocativity.

okay, we all knew i would go mango hunting…there’s a brad nelson over there who has to be the most tedious man in the world…and he’s a dumbass…he spends most of his comments scolding others for false equivalancies and then comes up with this:

Here’s a relevant article. The NCAA should consider sanctions against liberalism for it had far more to do with the crimes that occurred than a football team did.

It could, for instance, officially declare that the “Progressive” presidencies of both (in order to be bipartisan) Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt never happened.

he then links to ‘american stinker’…

Yeah, it’s not like progressives started repudiating Wilson in 1916.

Oh, wait…

but, for sheer wingnutty ranting, the prize goes to tammie lee:

Lets take abortion

Ask yourselves this
What should the NCAA do about abortion?
Its killed 55 million, the greatest mass murder in history.

Most colleges promote it and pay for it.
And the NCAA has known this, for 40 years.

Now lets say you ran the NCAA.
What would you do?

Prager: I don’t discriminate against gays, women, minorities, kids, poor people, unemployed, homeless, etc., they discriminate against ME. So There.

If all those aborted fetuses were around they could have both given Penn State a great passing game AND satisfied Sandusky’s criminal urges. It’s a WIN-WIN!

If all those aborted fetuses were around they could have both given Penn State a great passing game AND satisfied Sandusky’s criminal urges. It’s a WIN-WIN!

sir, your knack for putting a good spin on things is unrivaled…perhaps if your current pursuit doesn’t work out, you might consider a marketing position for a certain college football program?

Now lets say you ran the NCAA.
What would you do?

I can’t be absolutely sure but I think hookers and blow will be involved.

The NCAA should consider sanctions against liberalism for it had far more to do with the crimes that occurred than a football team did.

Wha.. wait, what?

Somehow sociopath doesn’t quite cut it when talking about Prager. Anyone know if there’s time still to add to the new DSM?

I first started listening to Conservative talk radio in the sixties, when it was just emerging as an outgrowth of religious broadcasting. Because of my work in film production, I’ve had the opportunity to spend time in a lot of cities in the United States, and I think I may fairly say that I have had the opportunity to listen to most of the top national and regional Conservative broadcasters over that time.

In all my listening, I have never heard a more intellectually dishonest person than Dennis Prager. There is no one, not even Rush (who was probably driven to drugs by self-loathing at what he had become) who can lie over and over again, without a sign that he feels the slightest remorse, like Prager. This is a truly evil man.

The NCAA should consider sanctions against liberalism for it had far more to do with the crimes that occurred than a football team did.

Liberalism: Turning priests into pedophiles since [insert date here]!!

But once it turned out that Paterno was feeding kids to Sandusky just to protect his run for “most winningest coach”, you’re damn straight it needed to be stripped and burned.

To be fair, JoePa wasn’t actively participating in the child rape, rather it’s a sin of omission not commission. Not to say his cowardice wasn’t despicable, just that there’s no need to be hyperbolic.

I’m glad criminal charges are being considered against Spanier and co. (I think…) and would have felt deep satisfaction seeing JoePa in the dock. The NCAA sanctions should be the least of anyone’s worries.

I swear. The 27% would burn their own houses down if Fox News told them to.

I was reading a Wisconsin-local blog today about the drought conditions, how it is impacting crops (yeah. There won’t be any. crops) and the first three comments there were about how global warming is a hoax, and libruls suck, and won’t it be nice to have warmer temperatures all the time in a a watershed that requires snowmelt to replenish the water table?

So yeah, you don’t have to wonder anymore, because they will.

Prager’s outlook sort of feels like the way Corey Robin describes Scalia’s: a kindergarten Nietzsche drooling over powerful men becoming the Winningest (and others the Losingest) on the unequal field of the Sport.

Any old conservative would call Jerry Sandusky a fag and have done with it: hands washed of blood, hands seemingly clean. A Scalia-style fascist will slip into shrieking fantods about equalizers equalizin’ the unequal, blah blah Harrison Bergeron blah blah Ayn Rand blah blah blah. Why let a rape victim’s fee-fees get in the way of basking in the glory of our football men making other football men acknowledge their masculine superiority? Isn’t this America???

If all those aborted fetuses were around they could have both given Penn State a great passing game

I disagree. They’re pretty hard to catch.

The 27% would burn their own houses down if Fox News told them to.

Or if some liberal type told them not to.

Over on another blog I read, someone suggested that what we really need is for President Obama to declare Oct. 27, on behalf of nutritionists and environmentalists, National Do Not Ingest Drano Day.

The resultant decimation would guarantee his second term and almost certainly improve the writing level of sites like NRO.

I can’t be absolutely sure but I think hookers and blow will be involved.

When are they NOT?

Jesus, no mention of Vidal yet? A crazy old national treasure dies and you’d think ESPN had an ugly left-wing stepchild.

it’s a sin of omission not commission.
Some would say that “actively quashing an investigation” counts as commission…

Some would say that “actively quashing an investigation” counts as commission…

It’s a sin of commission, the omission of a commission.

yeah, but those people are not as FUCKING INSANE as Dennis Prager….

on the basic topic, I always kind of felt that teh college should just shut down the football program. You know, because a college is kind of orineted toward actual collegiate pursuits and THAT WHEN A WHOLE SEGMENT OF ITS EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE IMPLICATED IN THE RAPE OF CHILDREN, that perhaps a bit of shame might kick in.

But I guess not.

Related: perhaps we should consider just stopping the pretense that college athletics are anything more than an uncompensated farm club for professional sports, and let’s just shut them all down as corrupt money laundering operations that exploit students that are prohibited from negotiating. and if we do that, maybe it’s time to stop pretending that college athletics are anything more than an uncompensated farm club, and that they have no place in an actual establishment oriented toward education of young people?

But I guess not.

College boosterism = athletic boosterism = national boosterism, or “patriotism”. It’s a mutually reinforcing ideology that works by substituting out emotional terms interchangeably, and if you threaten one part you do imperceptible but real and felt damage to other parts.

If you allow people to concede their college’s Winningest team doesn’t matter as much as child rape, you’re tugging on a string of a web that allows them to see being Proud of America as more important than blowing up children.

I mean, I don’t mean to sound like a strident old European but it is what it is.

Short version: the same social forces that protected John Yoo are protecting Graham Spanier, and Graham Spanier probably makes more people more money.

This fucked-up country would be in much better shape if a couple of Gores besides Lesley had hit the #1 position in their respective races.

Dimly remembered and paraphrased Vidal quote from a mid-1980 talk show appearance:

“I don’t believe we’re under such a dark cloud that he [Reagan] could actually be elected.”

Mourning in America. Wake me when the purple mountain majesties deign to clue the amber waves of grain into the fact that the formerly-fruited plain was salted by Bain and their ilk.

I’m with the undead on this. Why have an athletics thing at colleges anyway? But (sigh) I hear what you are saying there, Alec.

Here, in the Third World, colleges are for learning stuff only. Sure, we have inter-varsity rugby games and such, but strictly for laffs, played by students who do that sports stuff in their spare time.

Suezboo-

In Europe, professional teams have “youth teams” made up of kids they are considering sizing up. There’s plenty of problems with this, not least of all, how many kids have their lives fucked around with on at a damn early age at the behest of the big teams.

However, such costs of training these kids are on the clubs and their youth teams. Sometimes the government helps subsidize, but such subsidies are specifically sports subsidies. They aren’t drained from the financial obligations of public institutions. Kids may decide to go to school while playing for these youth teams. Colleges may even field their own teams made up of students from the student body, but it’s viewed as untoward to turn such students into professional athletes that are scouted as such.

I’m not sure it’s the best solution, but it would remove a lot of the scummier aspects of college football and basketball and probably the scummier aspects of high school basketball and football as well. What’s more, it allows students whose only goal is a hope of achieving professional sports aspirations a way to focus just on that without having to take “for dummies” courses that insult the institutions they are a part of.

Hell, we have much the same thing here in the States… for baseball. You can play college ball but it’s not the same meat market as college basketball and football are and a lot of that is because they have a farm league that isn’t based entirely on the student body.

“I don’t believe we’re under such a dark cloud that he [Reagan] could actually be elected.”

In confidence, while skeet shooting with him and JFK, Gore Vidal once politely but firmly instructed Tennesee Williams he shouldn’t cruse the next President. (The senator, told of Tennessee Williams’s opinion on his ass, took it as a good omen.)

Here, in the Third World, colleges are for learning stuff only. Sure, we have inter-varsity rugby games and such, but strictly for laffs, played by students who do that sports stuff in their spare time.

College athletics sort of grew up with college generally: what was once a sort of incubator and career training for the ruling class and its carefully selected trusties (and hence catering professionally to their hobbies, among them sports – training for imperialism or w/e) was democratized substantially by the New Deal and the GI bill. So we have sports in college now because in the 1920s they were two great aristocratic tastes that went aristocratically together, and the linkage is what Gould calls a spandrel: middle-class kids from middle-class parents going through motions originally intended for upper-class kids from upper- and middle-class parents.

America having copyright on the last century and all, most places have basically done like the US has done in democratizing what were formerly socially stratified higher education options (in many places much more so than us). The rest of the world’s spandrels are bound to be different, like France’s weird uniform fetish and Germany’s weird military frats.

Cerb is absolutely right about college baseball. That’s probably in part because it was already an old and disreputable spectator sport when the affluent society and radio/TV sports came around at roughly the same historical time. Proper college boys wouldn’t have lowered themselves to it except as a lark.

This fucked-up country would be in much better shape if a couple of Gores besides Lesley had hit the #1 position in their respective races.

Was reading Partly Cloudy Patriot recently (strongly recommend) and two things jump out: one, that Vowell shares a similar strain of Americanism without sharing the things that make (made – Jesus, there’s an idea, now, Gore Vidal in the past tense) Vidal his most sublime and his most intolerable.

Two, that being a book written in 2001-2002, it was really hard to read the stuff about Al Gore. We should have made him President! We fuckin’ did! What in the Christ is that shit??

Paterno destroyed his own legacy…simple as that.

Remember “personal responsibility” and “consequences for actions”…not to mention punishment for crimes serving as a social tool disincentive to others.

Paterno made his own bed. He gambled that being found out was less of a risk than cleaning house, and he lost. boo fucking hoo. Let’s forget about what this says about the “legend’s” humanity, compassion, or even common sense; he showed very, very poor judgement of the kind that one wonders if he could even tie his own shoes off the football field.

Legend my ass.

That football attracts some seriously damaged men to its ranks and the sorry state of history education in USA seem like two VERY different topics. Other than both being largely about the glorification of the warlike animus, I mean.

One of the great things I have discovered about history through the years is that there are so many of them. My favorite topic is the history of the progressive movements of the American Midwest. But even with a little niche to examine, one quickly discovers that a little corner leads to bigger room. So fighting over whose history is correct or most important is pretty silly because ALL of them are linked.

thanks for verbalizing this…that is what was niggling around in my brain since reading prager’s piece of shit…

It turns out Gore Vidal had a nephew named Burr Steers. You can’t make this stuff up.

that history and truth don’t matter if enough powerful people don’t want them to matter
That is the motto of the current Republican party

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Tuesday that it’s a “shame” former Vice President Dick Cheney considers her vice presidential selection a misfire, but she might be joining Cheney in skipping the Republican National Convention.

“Well, seeing as how Dick — excuse me, Vice President Cheney — never misfires, then evidently, he’s quite convinced that what he had evidently read about me by the lamestream media — having been written what I believe is a false narrative over the last four years — evidently, Dick Cheney believes that stuff, and that’s a shame,” Palin said on Fox News’s “On The Record with Greta Van Susteren.”

“In confidence, while skeet shooting with him and JFK, Gore Vidal once politely but firmly instructed Tennesee Williams he shouldn’t cruse the next President. (The senator, told of Tennessee Williams’s opinion on his ass, took it as a good omen.)”–alec

On first reading I thought you meant Reagan, and imagined an alternate universe was disqualified for the presidency by having slept with Tennessee Williams. A happier place, that universe.

Switching gears: kudos to Cerberus for the whole “jazz isn’t African-American because lots of blacks perform it” section. One hates the conservative movement in part because it’s based on (and relentlessly pushes) reductionist views of “complex sociopolitical events.” The effect is crippling, individually and nationally …

What an absurd situation when earnest and learned historians are accused of heinous leftism just for acknowledging the best-known facts and framings in all their complexity. Kids from conservative, non-intellectual, and sheltered families go off to school and have their minds perhaps painfully blown — whose fault is this? The professor of U.S. history, or the kid’s parents, etc.? Not that having your mind blown at school is bad — but I guess my colors are showing.

Can I get in on the reparations lawsuit that History will be filing against the NCAA?

Here’s a relevant article. The NCAA should consider sanctions against liberalism for it had far more to do with the crimes that occurred than a football team did.

College football coaching staffs being notorious for their liberalism.

Most colleges promote [abortion] and pay for it.
And the NCAA has known this, for 40 years.

Any college teams caught forcing abortions on children should also lose wins, OK?

evidently, he’s quite convinced that what he had evidently read about me by the lamestream media — having been written what I believe is a false narrative over the last four years — evidently, Dick Cheney believes that stuff, and that’s a shame

Hey, somebody evidently learned a new word! Don’t wear it out too soon, hon, keep it looking shiny and new by using it wisely!

Considering that Cheney insists that all televisions in his presence be tuned to Fox News, Sister Sarah evidently is the one with the problem.

Sarah is obviously not a good conservative. Everybody knows that when Dick Cheney guns you down, wether actually or metaphorically, you must then apologize to Chaney.

Sarah is obviously not a good conservative.

What is she good at?

Any old conservative would call Jerry Sandusky a fag and have done with it

Cf. the Catholic conservatives who blame priest pederasty on “the homosexual culture.”

Everybody knows that when Dick Cheney guns you down, wether actually or metaphorically, you must then apologize to Chaney.

He’s just putting the word out that she’s officially no longer relevant to the GOP’s plans. The political equivalent of a movie villain offing some accomplice who believed they had equal standing in the Grand Scheme.

she might be joining Cheney in skipping the Republican National Convention.

My Spidey-Sense says that this was decided for her, not by her. Could be wrong, but don’t be surprised if there’s a story out in December or January about in-fighting between her and the GOP establishment (read: Cheney).

I don’t usually see the usefulness of vacating wins, but someone should tell Praeger that no one’s going into the record books to flip the scores around. And no one will be trying to cover up the fact that Penn State’s new official losses didn’t actually occur on the field. It’s more of an asterisk thing, as in “we found out later that they were cheating (or doing other bad things).”

Well, seeing as how Dick — excuse me, Vice President Cheney — never misfires

did she just make a joke?! i mean a joke that actually was you know…clever?
Palin said the real mistake would’ve been if she had opted not to run.

“I could have decided, you know, I don’t want to be bloodied up,” Palin said. “I don’t want my family to go through what we will have to go through in order to put ourselves forward in the name of service to this country. But I did it. It would have been a mistake to have hunkered down, just lived that luxurious, if you will, comfortable lifestyle in Alaska.”

i could have decided that…but you know, my megalomania just wouldn’t allow that…’ and didn’t sister sara continually harp on the fact that she doesn’t live a ‘luxurious’ lifestyle? she shops at thrift stores? and the jet? that was just simply a transportation no-brainer?

Dennis, there’s some lovely filth down ‘ere!

I’m not so sure of that, bbkf. I’ve seen Prager on television. In fact, he had his own syndicated show on about the same time Limbaugh was on television. As others have noted, the likes of Cantor and Prager are doing yeoman’s work to dispel the notion that Juze iz smart!

Thanks, Cerb, for the mention of the bestest musical sub-genre in history; bebop. However it is truly a musician’s music and is fairly inaccessible to most of the public. As an elitist music snob I approve of this condition.

Paterno retroactively forfeits those games. That is all.

I find Denny’s ongoing infatuation with the “the contributions of white Anglo-Saxon Protestant males” curious, especially from some one who claims to be a practicing Jew. If I were a historian in 1860, it would be difficult not to argue that there was a vast preponderance of white Anglo-Saxon Protestant male contributions to society. But an honest historian would also point out that, for example, Catholic Irish and Jews were relegated to ghettos and openly discriminated against, and that African Human Beings were bought and sold as chattel. This is apparently just a push for Denny.

Under those circumstances, yes, contributions would be dominated by white Anglo-Saxon Protestant males, and we should what, recognize some inherent racial superiority?

I won’t even go into the silly false equivalency of NCAA stats and history text books.

But I have come to expect moral and intellectually laziness from Prager, who is my favorite wingnut. This is a man who has been divorced twice and married three times, all the while decrying the erosion of the sanctity of marriage because of the gays.

I won’t even go into the silly false equivalency of NCAA stats and history text books.

Yeah. NCAA stats matter! AMERICA FUCK YEAH!

If I were a historian in 1860, it would be difficult not to argue that there was a vast preponderance of white Anglo-Saxon Protestant male contributions to society.

I think in the grand scheme of things WASP-M contributions have been pretty paltry. Sure, Shakespeare’s great, and Newton was no slouch, but compared to democracy? Writing? Civilization? BEANS.

Hey you got your dIckead in my asshole! No you got your asshole in my dickwad!

*Just woke up, ain’t read thread, standard disclaimer goes here.

People like Pragget think that these conditions demonstrate the superiority of the WASP-M. The fact that he’s a jew just means he’s a superstitious weirdo like all the other religious people. Contradictions in your values for right wingers are WIN because conservatism is an entire ethos based on dumbassedness and allegiance to things and people and ideals that don’t exist outside of the schizophrenic delusions of fatass radio mouths.

Well, seeing as how Dick — excuse me, Vice President Cheney — never misfires

Well I guess he can be put on trial for an attempted murder then.

He’s just putting the word out that she’s officially no longer relevant to the GOP’s plans.

Which is funny because nothing could be further from the truth. The entire GOP is owned by the likes of Palin and Gingrich and anyone else who is looking to Somalia for advice on how to run a country.

@Golem Heart. I walk around whistling bop tunes frequently just to see if someone will recognize and comment on it. I would at least expect someone to say “Please stop that”. Nope. But when some finally says “Hey, are you whistling “Au Privave”? I think I’ll have found an instant friend.

Has no one bothered to point out that the NCAA is not rewriting history. No one at NCAA (or anywhere else sane people are talking about it) is saying those games were never played, nor are they claiming that the Nittany Lions were not victorious. The wins are being vacated from Joe Paterno’s and Penn State’s NCAA records. The NCAA doesn’t even write history books you st00pid hateful dumbfuck Prager.

The NCAA doesn’t even write history books

I’m sad they don’t. And the ebook versions should be produced by NFL Films for extra portentousness and gravitasiosity.

Yeah, sorry Dennis, but unless “history” is capable of pointing out on the doll where the mean old NCAA touched it, that false equivalence serves no other purpose than to try and downplay the horror of child rape.

Wow, National Review is fucking that Sandusky false equivalence chicken to a fare-thee-well lately. It was only last month that they featured an article maligning a Penn State climate researcher as the “Jerry Sandusky” of climate science.

They seem to be obsessed with Jerry Sandusky, perhaps jealous.

Well played, Cerb, well played!

For a bunch that is supposedly all about “individual achievement” they sure are big on claiming superiority just for being members of the White Anglo-Saxon males club.

That American history is dominated by the contributions of white Anglo-Saxon Protestant males is irrelevant to all those who see history as a feel-good exercise, not the relating of what actually occurred.

“Only a pedant would point out that there was no such thing as Germany during the classical-music period, and no Germans — only Prussians and Bavarians and Austrians and what-have-you.”

Of course Germany existed, in the same way that Scandinavia exists. Not as a nation-state, but as a group of smaller states that share a linguistic and cultural history. The concept of “German” and “Germany” goes back to the middle ages, and can be readily seen in works like the Schedel’sche Weltchronik of the 1490’s.

“A history of classical music will discriminate in favor of Austrians and Germans Jews” — Dennis Prager Richard Wagner

As you all know (if my URL didn’t give you a clue), I am about as much of a Wagner fan as a Jew could be, but still … why is Prager essentially channeling Wagner to make his point here? Prager claims to be Jewish. Nu? And I’m sure Wagner would happily point out that “I’m pretty sure my real dad was Ludwig Geyer and ya know, people say that Geyer was Jewish”. Or Wagner would have said that if he spoke colloquial 20th/21st century American English.

I’m still trying to grok how one of our self-appointed scolds for increased popular morality is excusing the likes of Paterno. I mean, it’s one thing when such scolds are all “people need to be more moral and stop talking rudely and stop having teh sechs except for one-man-married-to-one-woman-missionary-position-procreative-sex” and then completely ignore immorality in our society of the sort that the Prophets and Jesus cared a lot more about than teh sechs. At least in that case you could chalk the one-sidedness of the moral scolding up to differences in priorities, definitions and proposed solutions as to how to make society more just. But here, Prager is saying that sexual immorality should not have severe consequences? Since when does he believe that?

I guess as far as he is concerned (and for that matter as far as too many people are concerned), while “teh ghey are immoral because of Leviticus, that’s why”, precisely the sort of behavior that Leviticus is concerned about is allowed?

You know, in the most literal and historical sense of the word, this is what “perversion” means, ain’t it? Isn’t Dennis Prager being a PERVERT here?

Of course Germany existed, in the same way that Scandinavia exists. Not as a nation-state, but as a group of smaller states that share a linguistic and cultural history.

AH, but he has ruled out that interpretation by separately specifying “Austria”.

Why not? Not everyone knows as much about jazz as you do, or in fact the first thing about it (you could be making up “bebop” and I wouldn’t know different) and it’s always good to learn.

A shonda for the goyim.

Why this isn’t the automatic shorter for whenever any practicioner of Neoconservative Judaism (idiosyncracies: considering anything haraam a mitzvah; worshipping Jesus, who is Christ; combovers) opens their awful mouth?

Shorter Hesiod: “GET OUT OF MY AGORA!!!”

I’m sure eventually we’ll work out the Lascaux pictograms were in fact a crude, proto-linguistic way of communicating “in my day, we pulled ourselves up by our sandals and hunted our own horseflesh, and by thundering Hodei, we liked it!”

It’s purely tribal, Paterno was an outspoken and open-pocketed Republican.

By thundering Hodei (it’s growing on me), I hadn’t imagined it could be so flagrant. Here I was hoping it was mostly a matter of petty, spiteful boosterism; can it really be that they’re willing to justify anything if it’s a member of their horrible little tribe doing it?

(And they have the stones to bitch about people making stupid comments about Roman Polanski?)

My irony meter burned out when I got to the part where Dennis Prager complained about the lesson “that history and truth don’t matter if enough powerful people don’t want them to matter.” Prager seems totally unaware that he’s dissing one of the fundamental tenets of the modern conservative movement.

IAP (It’s always projection)

People like Prager are a reminder that the NCAA likely didn’t go FAR ENOUGH in dealing with Penn State – perhaps if they’d booted them *entirely* out of football and salted the earth then the “OMG FUTBAL IS LIFE” crowd would finally snap out of it.

I’ve been known to play bebop fairly competently, but writing about jazz isn’t my mode.

I dance about architecture.

I am not a fan of the NCAA generally. They make serious billions on the back of unpaid athletes. While the ‘student athlete’ ideal isn’t bad as ideals go, the student part of the equation for far too many of division I schools is a terrible joke.

I feel the same way about the Olympics too. What is the point of watching the greatest athletes in the world who are rich enough to train full time on their own dime? Even the best go home unpaid with a gold medal that they would have to pawn to realize any income from. Big sports will find other ways to remunerate big name athletes, but you’ll never see a whitewater canoe-er on the cover of a Wheaties box.

If the Olympics took all the money they made to sponsor athletic programs worldwide, so any Belgian or Indonesian or Indian kid with a dream and a little talent and a lot of dedication could go on to represent their country in synchronized whitewater gymnastic dressage, that would be one thing, but I see a lot of really dedicated independently wealthy people competing against other really dedicated independently wealthy people. Some countries like China of course do have robust national Olympic programs that turn out athletes by the bucket-load, but of course that comes out of their own pockets, and other countries with nearly as many talented athletes with big dreams have to go begging for lack of training dollars.

Helmut Monotreme

That whole comment was a giant change of subject. I got there by fuming about how Joe Paterno got his millions (and the NCAA gets its billions) on the back of unpaid athletes. And of course Joe Paterno had gone on record many times for opposing, in the strongest terms, the idea that college athletes should be paid as some sort of moral issue.

Helmut, the gold medals are only about 5% gold. So there’s not much money in selling it.

Helmut Monotreme

I should have expected that the IOC would be that cheap.

Call me a crabby old fart, but I liked it better when Olympians were true amateurs. I already know LeBron James can dunk.

I liked it better when the javelin throw included pitching and catching.

And of course Joe Paterno had gone on record many times for opposing, in the strongest terms, the idea that college athletes should be paid as some sort of moral issue

They all do that. They do NOT want to share the money. The idea of paying them bugs me too. Why should athletes get paid when students in actual academic disciplines are piling up debt?

plus they have great hours…and they get to take all summer off!

A history of classical music will discriminate in favor of Austrians and Germans. A history of jazz will discriminate in favor of blacks. And a history of the founding of America will discriminate in favor of WASP males. Otherwise they are not histories.

I realized late last night that I was distracted by the channeling of Wagner here and missed the real take home: is Dennis Prager arguing that a history of sports will inevitably discriminate in favor of child rapists?

I can see the sickening, underlying context of what Prager is writing now:

From the days of the ancient Greeks, child rape has been an integral part of manly activities like sports. For the NCAA to cancel Penn States victories is to obfuscate the whole history of Western culture and to deny the centrality of critical elements of sporting tradition. Social conservatives like me cannot by definition abide by such brazen re-writing of history and undermining of traditional values

Now … please, excuse me while I get a bucketful of brain bleach.

Helmut Monotreme

Why should athletes get paid when students in actual academic disciplines are piling up debt?

They should be paid, because the university (or the IOC and the host city in the case of the Olympics) is making money hand over fist on the backs and blood of their labor. They are not totally uncompensated, but given the disparity of what they get as scholarship athletes compares to how much money they make the university in ticket sales and merchandise and broadcast rights, an injustice is being done. Only a meager handful of those athletes will ever go on to professional sports. They don’t train any less hard than professional athletes.

I also believe it is a large injustice that college costs as much as it does. College should be accessible to anyone willing to scrimp and save and work a part time job. It should be possible to graduate without debt from any state university by doing that. The way college education costs have spiraled out of control since the 70’s or 80’s says a lot of bad things about us as a nation. I for one would far prefer fewer prisons, fewer giveaways to oil companies, fewer foreign wars in exchange for a promise that anyone who wants a bachelor’s degree can have a chance to earn one without accumulating crippling debt.

The engineering washouts in business school?

The comp sci washouts – OMG you have to take so much MATH! I didn’t know comp sci was so HARD! – tend towards film and English. No money there so they’re safe but also likely to be predators.

It seems to be entirely lit with a smattering of dull orange Christmas lights.

Add technical schools and I agree totally.

Oh you college type eggheads have it real cushy. What with your “grants” and “tenure”.
Don’t you know real success is defined by how many innovative financial instruments you create? Derivative is not meant to be a math term, nerd.

Mitt Rmoney was praising the Poles for “rejecting big government.” college is free in Poland. They have universal health care. New parents get a $300 bonus from the government. Meanwhile in Texas they want to outlaw critical thinking in schools.

This country is so fucked. And it’s the REAL Americans that are doing the fucking.

Silicone is unnatural, but would go down alot smoother than silicon. Ahh.

Vampires are just zombies on a special diet. I dunno why people sexualize them. So cold and nasty.

I realize they’re imaginary but they don’t sparkle. Years ago somebody wrote a column for Dragon magazine on different cultures’ variant vampires. If I redid that column today, I would not even footnote the sparkly variant. The rest of the world contributed cool legends like zombies with backwards feet and heads that come off. Their hearts were in the right places. The fabulators hearts, I mean.

each time i watch a twins game on fsn, i become more and more convinced that roy smalley is dracula’s cousin…

Well, the strippers kind of enjoy it.

He’d better have a fine-looking penis. Smalley, I mean. Travolta can get by on his looks, and a mind freed from Thetans.

Freeing the Thetans.

Or does the Playgirl editorial policy make allowances for spectacular balls? I have never seen a copy.

Speaking of silicone, Something Awful’s “Weekend Web” feature once followed the adventures of a fellow who kept injecting his balls with silicone to make em bigger and bigger. He seemed to enjoy the resulting attention. Doctors warned him to stop, but he scoffed. IIRC, he came to regret it.

Try being born to a wealthy and influential family next time and stop complaining

Nope. Doesn’t work that way.

They were not easy years. […]

We were happy, studying hard. Neither one of us had a job, because Mitt had enough of an investment from stock that we could sell off a little at a time.

The stock came from Mitt’s father. When he took over American Motors, the stock was worth nothing. But he invested Mitt’s birthday money year to year — it wasn’t much, a few thousand, but he put it into American Motors because he believed in himself. Five years later, stock that had been $6 a share was $96 and Mitt cashed it so we could live and pay for education.

Mitt and I walked to class together, shared housekeeping, had a lot of pasta and tuna fish and learned hard lessons. […]

We were living on the edge, not entertaining. No, I did not work. Mitt thought it was important for me to stay home with the children, and I was delighted.

She doesn’t specify if it was a few thousand total, in which case the estimate in today’s dollars would be about 400 large or whther it was a few thousand per year in which case she’s totally making up the story about the tuna and shit.

PM, I will bet this Cuba Zombre that to the Rmoneys, “a few thousand” means more than $20,000 but maybe not quite $100,000.

And in those days you could finance your college education with the income from a summer job, which would amount to something less than $5K so fuck them.

Ten years later, I (mostly, had a little help) financed my own college education with $3K per summer plus part-time work during the school year. One of my brothers painted houses every year to get through both undergrad and graduate school, another went to fucking VietNam (Navy) to take advantage of the GI bill.

Again, fuck them. They’ve never really worried about where the money to eat would come from.

It’s true it’s mostly white guys who did the neat stuff throughout our short history. It makese sense when you realize they were the only ones ALLOWED to.

“How to make do with bagged fregola Sarda and frozen albacore steaks…” Hard lesson is hard.

I dunno, they’re Mormons from Middle America, not that there’s anything wrong with it, I don’t know if they’d recognize those ingredients if they were bludgeoned with them. They’re the sort of rich twits who probably make green Jell-o with Evian.

I’ve never made fregola Sarda, but, every once in a while I get ambitious enough to make trahanas.

It works pretty well with pesto.

I meant getting some semolina, and rolling out those little nubbins. It looks easier than rolling out fettucini, and that’s not too difficult.

I’ve never seen any real reason to make it from scratch. The Italians don’t consider fresh pasta to be necessarily better than dried pasta, just different.

I didn’t mean to start anything. Maybe I should have gone with the heartbreak of telling their horse it had to drop interpretive dance classes…

Back in 1976-1977 (approximately), the University of Minnesota basketball team won 24 games and lost 3. That was later changed by the NCAA to 0-27. By my recollection, one player made some long distance phone calls that were paid for by somebody. One player from New Hampshire continued to accept hospitality from some boosters to whom he was introduced as a freshman three years earlier. Two players from the Bahamas each sold the pair of season tickets which they had been given as team members for about $200 apiece. I’m not sure whether or not these violations deserved vacating all the team’s victories, but, if they were considered sufficient cause for such a punishment, I would think that enabling pederasty would deserve at least the same level of discipline.

Oh, Dennis….may you hear those “rhythmic slapping sounds” in your dreams for all of your days.
