My Last Post On the Damn Wingnut Brouhaha Over The Mosque

J-Dough Loadberg & hotdog sammich

I had sworn that I was going to write nothing further on the triumphalist Ground Zero Mega-Mosque, basketball court, culinary institute, bomb-making factory and Christian interrogation and torture center slated to be built four inches away from where the base of the North Tower of the World Trade Center once stood. Then I stumbled across Jonah’s latest word jumble and hog-call transcription in the Los Angeles Times.

Jonah’s column was apparently written by an iPhone app that can take the “blacks are the real racists” meme, create suitable variations for disfavored groups of choice and then string all the resulting sentences together until they reach the 750 words required for an op-ed.

Here’s a thought: The 70% of Americans who oppose what amounts to an Islamic Niketown two blocks from ground zero are the real victims of a climate of hate.

Well, calling it a “thought” is perhaps a bit of an exaggeration. Brain fart, too, seems generous.

[A]nd anti-Muslim backlash is mostly a myth. … Regardless, 2001 was the zenith or, looked at through the prism of our national shame, the nadir of the much-discussed anti-Muslim backlash in the United States. The following year, the number of anti-Islamic hate-crime incidents (overwhelmingly, nonviolent vandalism and nasty words) dropped to 155. In 2003, there were 149 such incidents. And the number has hovered around the mid-100s or lower ever since.

Because, you see, only violence and vandalism counts. Koran-burning, mosque protests, calls for banning all mosque construction, and claims that Islam is a religion of violence are just, you know, a little bit of joshing and teasing all meant as good clean fun and nothing more. Certainly not “Islamophobia.”

In 2001, there were twice as many anti-Jewish incidents as there were anti-Muslim, again according to the FBI. In 2002 and pretty much every year since, anti-Jewish incidents have outstripped anti-Muslim ones by at least 6 to 1.

Since Jews outnumber Muslims by about 3 to 1, which Jonah somehow neglects to mention, I’m not quite clear that these figures mean anything, particularly given the relatively small number of incidents involved for both groups. And these figures don’t mean anything at all if there are, and there likely are, any differences between the willingness of the two groups to report hate crimes.

But here’s the inevitable spin we’ve been waiting for since the first sentence of Goldberg’s column

But if you watch TV or movies or read, say, the op-ed page of the New York Times — never mind left-wing blogs — you’ll hear much more open bigotry toward evangelical Christians (in blogspeak, the “Taliban wing of the Republican Party”) than you will toward Muslims.

As a result there has been a groundswell in a campaign to end the building of megachurches in the United States. And the New York Times has been calling for evangelicals to be subject to broader screening at airports. Many evangelicals are so intimidated by this open bigotry against them that they are afraid to go shopping or leave their homes. Just yesterday, a taxicab passenger asked the driver if he was Christian, and when the driver said that he was, the passenger stabbed him. CNN reports that Christians at the anti-Mosque demonstration in New York were severely beaten by a mob of Muslims.

And what wingnut meditation on prejudice and intolerance would be complete without the complaint that liberals are intolerant of intolerance?

And now, thanks to the “ground zero mosque” story, we are again discussing America’s Islamophobia, which, according to Time magazine, is just another chapter in America’s history of intolerance. When, pray tell, will Time magazine devote an issue to its, and this administration’s, intolerance of the American people?

Of course, the inevitable question here is when, pray tell, will Jonah devote a column to his intolerance of intolerance of intolerance?

The inevitable question here is when, pray tell, will Jonah devote a column to his intolerance of intolerance of intolerance?
No. The inevitable question is, how can someone who has such a well documented misunderstanding of the world around him, not drowned in a mud puddle or strangled himself while tying his shoes?

The 70% of Americans who oppose what amounts to an Islamic Niketown two blocks from ground zero are the real victims of a climate of hate.

Wait, they’ll be selling sweatshop shoes?!! I CHANGE MY VOTE!

Seriously, though, yet another moronic claim that massive self-inflicted butthurt makes one a victim. Oh boohoo, I said bigoted shit and people called me a bigot, will this horrible persecution never cease?

Watching my liberal friends defend the cult of Islam as a religion is hysterically absurd, and has forced me to end civil relationships with several co-workers.

I am sure those co-workers are heartbroken they’ll stop getting emails linking to “We’ve Got To Stop The Mosque At Ground Zero.” or other great wingnut hits with the obligatory pics of the President with a bone through his nose.

Is that a sammich or a hotdog?

It’s a hotdog sammich!

Watching my liberal friends defend the cult of Islam as a religion

Wait. Cults aren’t religious? If you’re trying to argue that something isn’t a religion, calling it a cult is probably the wrong way to go.

Also, aren’t these the same motherfuckers that are always complaining that evolution is a religion?

But if you…read, say, the op-ed page of the New York Times…you’ll hear much more open bigotry toward evangelical Christians…than you will toward Muslims.

Then Jonah should petition to have Brooks’s dumb ass fired.

Racist terrorists are the real victims.

No, wait………….

Disgruntled Lurker

It’s a hotdog sammich!

Nooooooooooo. Hotdogs cannot be sammiches.

This is very important.

Do I need to draw venn diagrams?

Dammit…..uhhhh………..

Victims of hotdogs……………..

I’m not afraid of your crazy undersea diagrams.

I mean, that’s the guy that wrote that book about the Nautilus, right?

Nooooooooooo. Hotdogs cannot be sammiches.

Okay, maybe hotdogs can’t be sammiches, but there are such things as sammiches containing hotdogs.

disgruntled, gods yes, more venn diagrams.

Did you just photoshop that Venn diagram?

TruculentandUnreliable

Do I need to draw venn diagrams?

Will circles in the diagram be made with round hotdogs?

Okay. If all terrorists are hotdogs, but only some sammiches are racists………

Shit. Now I’m confused, paranoid and hungry.

Time to join the Tea Party!!

TruculentandUnreliable

That hotdog sammich doesn’t look kosher.

What if, instead of a sammich with a hotdog in it, Loadpants had a hotdog with a sammich in it? sounds like something he would eat, doesn’t it?

TruculentandUnreliable

No, I’m not high.

I imagine that if they ever finish rebuilding the WTC, a giant modern office complex is going to include at least one Muslim prayer room. Just wait for the hissy-fit when the anti-community center two blocks away folks find out about that.

“N.Y. filmmaker charged with stabbing cab driver for being Muslim”

you’ll hear much more open bigotry toward evangelical Christians (in blogspeak, the “Taliban wing of the Republican Party”) than you will toward Muslims.

For all the talk about impending sharia law in the U.S., it’s not the Muslims who are trying to teach “alternatives” to evolution in the public schools.

TruculentandUnreliable

Okay, so I’ve actually read the post now. (Sorry, Tintin. Just wanted to talk about hotdogs).

Anyway, does this sentence: “Regardless, 2001 was the zenith or, looked at through the prism of our national shame, the nadir of the much-discussed anti-Muslim backlash in the United States” make anyone else’s brain bleed out their ears in chunks? Or have I just had too many sweet tea vodka and Diet Dr. Peppers?

Watching my liberal friends defend the cult of Islam as a religion

Is this the new angle? The First Amendment guarantees freedom of “religion”, but doesn’t say anything about “cults”, so we can burn the mosques down with a clear conscience?

I think if I were a Muslim American, I’d be renewing my passport with a quickness and looking for somewhere else to live. These people are frightening.

From what fucking planet has he been receiving transmissions?

“feminist AynRandian” blogger and human-rights activist Pamela Geller

Only “Randian” and “blogger” mean anything close to what you think they mean.

I do love the “Here’s a thought” start.

It was generous of him to let us know because how would we have determined it otherwise?

Opinions differ on whether or not it was a thought.

Big Bad Bald Bastard

70% of Americans don’t believe it was a thought.

In Goptopia the bigger your white picket fence the more valuable you are to the community.

There were some electrical impulses firing in his noggin. Probably.

I don’t think “climate of hate” means what Jo-nuts thinks it means. While it is true that the attitude toward the anti-park-51 demonstrators could be described as “disapproving” or “disgusted”, calling bigots what they are doesn’t qualify as “hate.”

There were some electrical impulses firing in his noggin.

Well, yeah, during that time he was licking the 9-volt battery there probably were.

There’s a good interview here:

On a spring day six years ago, Mohamed Ghorab was the Islamic leader of a small mosque, in a hardscrabble neighbourhood of Philadelphia.

Next thing he knew, he was deported. His congregants were arrested without charge.

His mosque collapsed.

Turns out there are thousands like him across the United States, who’s biggest mistake seems to be that they’re Muslim.

In covering that story, it seemed to Stephan Salisbury of the Philadelphia Inquirer that ever since September 11, 2001 the American justice and immigration system has been perverted.

And he’s written a book about it, called Mohamed’s Ghosts: an American Story of Love and Fear in the Homeland.

Others too. A very worthwhile weekly listen.

There were some electrical impulses firing in his noggin. Probably.

Hmm, doubtful. Too many resistors not enough capacitors.

Conversely, nowhere is there more open, honest and intentional intolerance — in words and deeds — than from certain prominent Muslim leaders around the world. And yet, Americans are the bigots.

3000 of one, a few hundred thousand of the other.

Hotdogs cannot be sammiches.

fuck this

For all the talk about impending sharia law in the U.S., it’s not the Muslims who are trying to teach “alternatives” to evolution in the public schools.

They never get it through their heads that if Muslim theocrats had even the slightest bearing on the way this country’s governed, liberals would be opposing them just as fervently. Same for Scientology, the Raelians, Falun Gong or any other kind of theology. They don’t; only the Christian Right has that kind of power, so only they warrant our attention.

Naturally they prefer to see it as a personal attack on them because they’re Christian. The idea that it’s not all about them is just too hard on the ego to process.

I think if I were a Muslim American, I’d be renewing my passport with a quickness and looking for somewhere else to live. These people are frightening.

Where else is there?

Western Europe? They’re even more racist than we are and their governments are more prone to showing it. The Middle East? That’s what a lot of them ran away from in the first place. Japan? That’s a laugh. As many problems as we have, a Muslim immigrant still isn’t likely to find a better deal anywhere I can think of than what they get here.

(Maybe Canada, or some Latin American countries? I wouldn’t know about those).

Big Bad Bald Bastard

The idea that it’s not all about them is just too hard on the ego to process.

Well, they’re narcissistic enough to believe that they are at the center of the entire space/time continuum.

Oh, well then I suppose he renounces bigotry and embraces equality now…

Wait for it…

Sadly, No!

He often wondered why gay voters never formed common cause with Republican opponents of Islamic jihad, which he called “the greatest anti-gay force in the world right now.”

I can answer that for ya Kenny boy. It’s cuz they aren’t stupid.

Oh, and survival instincts tend to make one focus on the enemy at the gates, rather than one that is halfway around the world.

American Christian Right

Islamic jihad, which he called “the greatest anti-gay force in the world right now.”

We take strong exception to this statement, and would like to state for the record that the judges are biased.

Sadly, No!

Heh, indeed … it says all you need to know about this guy that he says he has “regrets” but as of yet no meaningful apology is forthcoming.

Yeah, Ken, it sure is a puzzler that Queer Nation, Code Pink & ActUp didn’t fundraise to help your #1 Man-Whore keep his Pennsylvania Avenue streetcorner. As mysteries go it’s right up there with Sasquatch, the Loch Ness Monster & Justin Bieber’s popularity. Who doesn’t want to help out the people who always demonize & oppress them?

Out of the closet … & he brought the stoopid along with him.

I dunno if you can call the “Lock up the ladies and give ’em to the rich guys four at a time” religion anti-gay in practice. You wind up with a lotta guys with a lotta free time.

Have you seen this charming piece?

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu…

So, when do these people come out and say that they really feel that a much better use of the ex-Burlington Coat building would be showers and ovens? Still catering to the Muslim community, of course.

In Goptopia the bigger your white picket fence the more valuable you are to the community.

fixxred

Geez, Ken, I dunno why the queers don’t dig the party that has such an anti-gay culture that it took *you* 43 years to come out of the fucking closet, even to yourself. I’d feel sorry for him if he wasn’t such a stooge.

And, quick question for Jonah. Is he counting as anti-Christian bias crime or anti-Muslim bias crime when some GAWD and COUNTRY teabagger mistakes a swarthy Christian type for a Muslim and bashes him? Because I don’t think you should get what are essentially double victim points because your side are fucking stupid.

what are essentially double victim points

Like Green Stamps?

Because I don’t think you should get what are essentially double victim points because your side are fucking stupid.

Leave it to a fucking conservative asshole to come out of the closet, take a swing at the ebol mooslims and try to use the event to pick off a few of the dumber gay patriots to join him in the exploitation of homophobia.

I’m straight, so I don’t get to be judgmental about how and when gay men come out. But the fact that he came out just after his posse of gheyhaterz was relegated to clearing brush full time and keeping cardiologists up to their ears in work didn’t go unnoticed. Since he pulled the “watch out for those crazy muslims” shit, I’m gonna go ahead and call him an opportunistic asshole ratfucker.

I’m gonna go ahead and call him an opportunistic asshole ratfucker.

I don’t think you needed to wait ’till now to do that.

I don’t think you needed to wait ’till now to do that.

Probably not. I’m a sucker for a redemption story. Prodigal sons and whatnot. This one is beyond saving, I’m afraid. I had a big ol’ pile of forgiveness right here with his name on it, too. Such a waste.

pick off a few of the dumber gay patriots to join him in the exploitation of homophobia.

Ha. “Join me, and we shall rule the galaxy together as father and son”. Or top and bottom as it were.

This is like the money quote for me …

“There are a lot of Republicans who are gay, there are a lot of Republicans who support government sanction of gay marriage, a lot of Republicans who support abortion on demand, a lot of Republicans who support cap-and-trade provisions. They’re not single-issue voters.” Gillespie acknowledged that the party had been inhospitable to gays in the past, and said that he hopes Mehlman’s decision to come out leads the party to be “more respectful and civil in our discourse” when it comes to gays.

This is a pretty hilarious election gambit, “Hey liberals and minorities, try the Republican Party, we aren’t all fucking insane!” But then you switch on the news and it’s all bigots all the time, punctuated by wide-stance hypocrites and other such scandals.

Like Green Stamps?

In high school, which I dimly remember through a haze of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, we had a concept called Angst Points which we’d apply to all the school drama queens who preferred to suffer publicly rather than self-medicate. Those people, it always seemed to the stoners with whom I hung out, spent their lives in pursuit of Angst Points, acquired by blowing one’s minor crises *waaaay* the fuck out of proportion, and hopefully pre-empting the players around you who, if they had fewer points, had to STFU about themselves and pay attention to you.

We never really figured out what you won, but occasionally someone would approach us looking for sex, drugs, or booze for a pitiful friend. We tended to laugh as much as possible before slipping back into our hazes. (It’s possible the actual prize was having those other assholes having to pay attention to you, but having been on the receiving end of that, I never saw that as a plus.)

The same dynamic appears to be going on here. But apparently if Jonah can claim the most victim points for Christians, Pam Atlas has to pay attention to K-Lo. Maybe he wants to watch or something.

As to passing judgment on how gay men come out of the closet, that’s where the near-pity comes in. I can’t help thinking that if he’d been surrounded by people who wouldn’t have freaked right the fuck out, Ken could have come to terms with himself sooner, and had a chance at being a happy, well-adjusted person for at least some of those forty three years. As much as any of us gets.

I grew up queer, and knew it early. I’m not gonna say everyone was happy with that (my mother still refuses to acknowledge it’s anything other than something I do to piss her off), but I did have at least one role model teaching me The Ways of Leo the Lop (“Normal is what you are!”), and didn’t spend forty fucking years fooling myself about it and desperately, miserably trying to be something I’m not. I’d wish the same for everyone, but it seems to me that you’re a lot more likely to end up trying to force your ears into unnatural positions if you spend all your time around people who actively hate who you may be.

This all assumes Ken is telling the truth about actually coming to terms with himself, and not being horribly, horribly disingenuous and just cynically deciding he doesn’t need to lie anymore to keep his job. But, you know, I’m a bleeding heart liberal, I think there’s at least a chance of that. So less judgment on Ken than on his peer group that actively makes people miserable for stupid reasons.

Well, yeah, but I expected his “coming out” story to for him to be arrested for indecent exposure in a truckstop bathroom.

I thought it was well-known that Ken Mehlman was gay. Maybe it was one of those things that everybody except the person themselves knew.

Is there anyone outside of a few RNC donors surprised by Mehlman’s coming out?

Surprised by his sexuality? Nope.
Surprised by possibly the first honest thing he’s spoken in his entire adult life? More.

I thought it was well-known that Ken Mehlman was gay.

See my linky above. Larry “Finger on the Pulse” King seemed shocked, shocked I tell you.

The fact is, liberals are the number one oopressors of gays right now because of there furvent support for Islam Above All.

Tintin, Since you didn’t mention it in your post, I thought you should know that a Muslim was the victim of a hate crime.

First, I owe someone here an apology.

In the blow up over the Cordoba Center, someone claimed that there would be an increase in violence towards Muslims. I poo-pooed it, claiming that NYC was bigger than that.

I was wrong. My city let me down.

Second, why is Fudgie suddenly campaigning for political correctness?

In the blow up over the Cordoba Center, someone claimed that there would be an increase in violence towards Muslims. I poo-pooed it, claiming that NYC was bigger than that.

I was wrong. My city let me down.

Well, I can’t speak for Chris, but I’ll accept your apology.

But I didn’t hear you the first time…what were you, again?

Tintin, Since you didn’t mention it in your post, I thought you should know that a Muslim was the victim of a hate crime.

Huh? I thought Tintin did stellar work listing or referring to the hate crimes of the past ten years…

Perhaps he needs to use the blink tag.

Well, I can’t speak for Chris, but I’ll accept your apology.

Apology accepted, Captain Needa.

(Living in Washington, DC, I’m the last person on earth who gets to blame other people for having a few nutbags in their city).

Yeah, man, this is an interesting place. Mixture of liberals and die-hard Palinites. Out in my neck of the woods, there’s a Palin sticker for every two Obama ones.

Um, yeah. Try putting one of those centers here in Western Idaho. You think your city let you down? What’s the population there? 8 million? There are 300,000 in this “metro” area. We would own your asses in petulance, psychosis and violence. I though NY was largely above that too, but every city has a wingnut faction.

We have a small mosque here. There’s a little grocery store next to it that I’ve never been in, but I’ll bet they have tasty stuff.

Rose flavouring is nice to find.

It is very nice. My friend’s mother would put it in orange juice, which may sound weird, but was really delicious.

We do have a multi-ethnic market run by (I think) Iraqi immigrants, and they carry it there, too.

I live literally across the street from a synagogue. Every Saturday morning, a police car sits in the parking lot (with the officer in it or wandering around outside the temple) through the duration of the services.

You weren’t being naive, Actor. I really thought (and still believe) that of all the places in this nation, NYC is among the safest for non-white/protestant/straight people.

Btw: the “anonymous” above, was me.

And really, you probably aren’t completely wrong, as the motivation for the stabbing may not be the “mosque.”

Completely…I’m sorry, what does that word mean?

I heard Enright’s story before I knew he was the stabby fellow, so I knew he was editing a documentary on Afghanistan and the army there. When I learned he was the stabby fellow, I naturally assumed he was suffering from PTSD.

Stupid liberal that I am, ascribing good things to a hoodlum…

TruculentandUnreliable

Completely…I’m sorry, what does that word mean?

Totally; utterly.

I’d add that these days we’re also held responsible for right-wing acts of political violence, because whenever a right-winger does something ugly, he is instantly tagged as a liberal infiltrator.

True, and the maddest thing of them all. I noticed the same thing when PJTV put out an alert “watch out for people carrying overtly racist signs, they may be liberal infiltrators.” And then there’s George Bush, surely the greatest liberal infiltrator of them all.

And then there’s George Bush, surely the greatest liberal infiltrator of them all.

Clearly, stabby fellow is a liberal infiltrator. He probably had the entire thing staged. The Muslim “cab driver” is actually a stunt double for Alfred Molina.

How many ways can this be answered “no”?

But apparently if Jonah can claim the most victim points for Christians, Pam Atlas has to pay attention to K-Lo. Maybe he wants to watch or something.

*gag*

So less judgment on Ken than on his peer group that actively makes people miserable for stupid reasons.

Amen.

Is there anyone outside of a few RNC donors surprised by Mehlman’s coming out?

I guess my gaydar’s broke. I never even thought about his sexual orientation or marital status, I just thought he was another reactionary asshole with a megaphone.

Actually, I’m glad he came out and I hope it helps move us away from the “victimize the homos” crazyness of the last few years decades centuries. It’s time to fucking move on and let people live.

Not gonna read the whole thread so forgive me if I’m repeating someones comment.

Ken M. has always been and continues to be a lying sack of santorum. He did not recently come to terms or whatever bullshit he’s spurting out his well fucked ass. Those of us who have been keeping tabs on such things know that has been “out” for many years. Just not to the general public. This was no David Brock moment – no sympathy deserved or earned v

When I heard about this story today, my first reaction was “Hans Moleman? How progressive of Matt Groening to out a character on The Simpsons!”

Wait…what???????

I just thought he was another reactionary asshole with a megaphone.

Well, there was that gay orgy on Meet The Press when Mehlman teabagged Russert. Maybe you missed that.

Russert was asking for it. Look at the way he dressed!

I guess my gaydar’s broke. I never even thought about his sexual orientation or marital status, I just thought he was another reactionary asshole with a megaphone.

Is it broken? I would tend to think you’re more like me, meaning you don’t really give a crap what a guy’s orientation is until he gets caught in the act airport bathroom stall and insists that the’s not gay, or actively works to continue or expand oppression of gays and then gets caught with a rentboy. I thought he was another reactionary hater, but it turns out he’s even worse. Another gay patriot type. The worst kind of person. The ultimate nihilist. A guy who knife his own mother to get a vote for his gang of scumbag neocons.

I find that people who worry too much about sexual orientation have issues that are screaming to be dealt with. Just the opinion of a friendly breeder.

Or, at the very least, someone who has had thoughts and/or fantasies about other men…I think that makes some men just as militant, as if by being a homophobe, they’ll prevent themselves from “turning” gay.

Actually, I wouldn’t even care about the first part of this unless the second part of this is included. It’s not that a Republican is gay, it’s that he or she supports a regime committed to not just the repression of gay rights, but actively works to repress homosexuality, period.

Show me an active and earnest member of the Republican party who is openly gay AND has taken a public stance against his party’s bigotry, and I’ll show you a sparkle unicorn.

Some teatards will say: “See, the Republicans, under Bush, were not really conservative at all.”

Republican operatives like Rove will say: “See, we really are the inclusive, Big Tent Party”, while patting Mehlman and Steele on the head.

I did not know that Eugene Delgaudio was a secretary for a Cub Scout troop.

By the way, his bio lists him as a graduate of York College in NYC.

York is a college of the CUNY system. It’s, um, basically remedial high school with an Associates Degree curriculum that somehow can award Bachelor degrees.

The real irony is he probably spent more time with gays than he realizes, and in particular, gay Latinos, blacks and perhaps even a few gay Muslims.

And that’s just the Young Republican club!

Actually, I wouldn’t even care about the first part of this unless the second part of this is included.

Exactly. I just kind of feel sad for someone who stays closeted but doesn’t do anything to hurt anyone else (at least, people outside his or her immediate family). I know a lot of people would disagree with me and I definitely think their viewpoint is legitimate, especially since I don’t have much skin in the game , but I can’t really feel too angry at someone who is obviously struggling. Unless they take that out on others. Then they can bite me.

Y’know, being a DFH and all, I can understand how a guy might have some confusion in his life, caught between his religion, say, and his orientation. I can even see taking 43 years to work it out and conjure up the bravery to admit who he really is.

If he would just STFU and work out his issues in private, I’d totally accept that, even if he was to remain silent about his party’s refusal to accept people like him. When he actively promotes that party and that position, then I have a problem. It’s more than “supporting” the regime, it’s actively pushing that regime’s agenda forward that blows my mind.

I’m not so tolerant. As a Northeasterner, I’m friendly with plenty of Republicans and even some Conservatives, whom I’ve learned to respect. Most of these men (because almost universally, they are) are aghast at the scene their party has created. Some, like Amo Houghton and Christie Whitman, have formed organizations to try and take the party back to a more centrist position. Most of my friends are part or contribute to those organizations.

I get on their cases, too 🙂 Just not as harshly, but then I’m lobbying to try to get them to jump ship. Yes, they are vocal, but in the noise, those voices get lost. I try to encourage them to speak out more. I think in a world where squeaky wheels really do get greased, it pays to screech until your voice is rusted.

Almost totally OT but an indicator of how oblivious I am:

Back in the day, I lived in the SF Bay area for several years just after college. My girlfriend at the time and I would make regular trips up to The City because *awesome*. She’d always laugh at me because I’d never see the dudes checking me out as we walked down the street. I don’t think I ever noticed, even after she pointed it out.

That was many years and 25 pounds ago but there was a time when I was hawt. I cling to that.

TruculentandUnreliable

Especially for T&U:

I’ve seen that. That doesn’t necessarily mean that all the homophobic dudes are *gay*, but they obviously do have repressed thoughts and urges that totally freak them out. They could be bi, or even straight, but so terrified of any vague feelings of femininity or attraction to other men that those just get magnified.

Then again, my own sexuality is, um, fluid, so I have no fucking idea what goes on in straight or gay people’s heads.

Exactly. Which is why I think the whole guilting kids into abstinence thing is bullshit, among other guilt-inducing shit regarding stuff we really have no control over.

Look, everybody has thoughts they’d rather not have. But they’re just *thoughts*. This is why the idea of a mind-reading God who will punish you for thinking about wanting your neighbor’s TV is so abhorrent to me, and, I think, psychologically damaging.

So I’ve heard or read somewhere that this may be true of most women, where their main orientation may shift over time. I know this isn’t what you’re describing, T&U, but I think it’s fascinating nonetheless. Sexuality is a weird and wonderful thing.

I got dragged all over Seattle by a couple of gay men to all the gay bars. Obviously everyone knew the second I walked through the door that I wasn’t gay, and they teased me and gave me a little bit of shit, but I was a good sport about it, and I’ll admit that I was a bit flattered by the attention. I had the time of my life that night. Fear is such a sissy-assed emotion.

Question to ponder: Why does this phenomenon affect so many more women than men? Biological or cultural?

(I’m not answering because I don’t have the slightest bit of a clue)

You’re not?

*pout*

Well that depends on who’s offering, I suppose…

Why does this phenomenon affect so many more women than men? Biological or cultural?

You sure it does? My instinct is to say “cultural” but it may be more of a factor of exposure than sexuality. I think back to all the circle jerks teen boys get involved with, I’m not sure fluid sexuality can’t be ascribed to that.

TruculentandUnreliable

I really do think it’s mostly cultural. I mean, I think some people are more fluid than others, and I’m sure there are people who are 100% straight and 100% gay, but even the understanding of “orientation” (and gender, for that matter) is different across times and cultures, so I do think a large part of it is cultural.

Truism: scratch a homophobe, find a homo.

Depends on where you scratch ’em, I suppose.

You sure it does? My instinct is to say “cultural” but it may be more of a factor of exposure than sexuality. I think back to all the circle jerks teen boys get involved with, I’m not sure fluid sexuality can’t be ascribed to that.

I’m totally not sure it does. This is strictly an anecdotally based observation, biased toward my own sexuality. You may be right.

TruculentandUnreliable

IYou sure it does? My instinct is to say “cultural” but it may be more of a factor of exposure than sexuality. I think back to all the circle jerks teen boys get involved with, I’m not sure fluid sexuality can’t be ascribed to that.

I think it’s more that it’s eroticized in women. I’ve also noticed that if you’re a woman who has sex with men and women, you’re probably going to be labeled as “straight” by a lot of people, whereas if you’re a man who has sex with men and women, a lot of people are just going to think you’re secretly gay. Apparently, the magical power of the ween has some sort of affect on orientation.

Furthermore, in other primates, sex is used as social bonding. I don’t see why it would be much different with us, especially since we’re perpetually horny creatures.

TruculentandUnreliable

Let me clarify the first comment: in other words, sexual fluidity is something that’s not really acknowledged/understood in general, but I think it’s more attributed to women because it’s teh hawt to straight dudes.

TruculentandUnreliable

Oh, also! Because of the Magical Peen, there is also, in some people’s minds, a bright line between experimenting and being Teh Ghey, which doesn’t exist as much for women. So men get put into categories, whereas women can get away with shaking up those categories a little more, I think.

Why does this phenomenon affect so many more women than men?

As more American men wind up in prison we may see more fluidity.

And THAT is why the IPU is invisible.

Erm… what about the rest of us?

If you’re male, it’s just assumed.

Why does this phenomenon affect so many more women than men? Biological or cultural?

My thoughts:

A) Women are generally more beautiful, to everyone.
B) Everyone starts life sucking on a tit. Everyone likes boobs.
C) Women are more likely to become afraid of men than men are of women, in spite of the outreach efforts of Lorena Bobbit
D) Female sex is more equal, whereas there is always an undertone of dominance in male penetration (when it isn’t completely overt)
E) Guys are more likely to get beat up coming onto a not interested guy than a woman is (self reinforcing)
F) A lot of people aren’t interested in anything going up their ass regardless of homosexual curiosity, and the perception is that male sex is more likely to go there.

Basically, their are a lot more things to get past for a bi-curious guy than for a bi-curious woman.

A) Women are generally more beautiful, to everyone.

There was a time when I may have agreed with this, but I find that the older I get the more appreciation I have for male beauty.

C) Women are more likely to become afraid of men than men are of women, in spite of the outreach efforts of Lorena Bobbit

HA! That’s fucking hilarious!

Those are great observations, especially the self-reinforcing (although likely exaggerated) fear of approach.

Yes–this all makes perfect sense.

Nor are they treacherous, cheating horndogs.
I mean, some of them are, but that’s not due to them being bi.

This stereotype about gay men is awfully tiresome. Even more so with bisexual men and women.

Another observation or conclusion from all of these thoughts: There are likely way more bisexual or gay men out there than we know. Closeting is socially mandated, so the perhaps the idea that sexual fluidity is more prevalent in women than men is not true at all.

There was a time when I may have agreed with this, but I find that the older I get the more appreciation I have for male beauty.

Question to ponder: Why does this phenomenon affect so many more women than men? Biological or cultural?

I suspect its cultural and based on this: women have historically been chattel provided for the use and amusement of men. Therefore their sexuality is unimportant. It doesn’t matter what they do or with whom, so long as it doesn’t result in their owner/spouse discovering, as it were, a cuckoo in the nest. Plus, straight men find the idea of women having sex with each other for their (the men’s) amusement teh hawt. Men’s sexuality was important because of patrimony – they carried on the family name, transferred the family property, and so forth. For a man to remain celibate or be actively homosexual threatened the entire family, especially if he was the oldest or only son. As long as a woman didn’t shame her family/husband with a child out of wedlock, who cared what she did?
