I'm with overgoverned........if you go to a show and enjoy it, well that's that. Surely the people make the atmosphere, but who are you really there to see???? and if ann coulter enjoys the same music whether it be in her own home or at a show who are we to say she's feigning it.
i hate coulter and her nazi ass as much as everyone but let's not lose sight of the goal here!!!

As a gunowner, hunter, pothead, conservative I agree with Ann that freedom is what it`s all about.I was disheartened when the surviving band members supported the new fascist dictator.Jerry never cared for politicians and neither do I.

FOLKS!

I thought deadheads were a tolerant bunch who just wanted to make music and spread love. If Anne Coulter wants to be a part of that organization then I think it should be respected, not rejected out of hand. Maybe she'll learn something! I think what most of you are afraid of is maybe she'll teach something. . . . .Can't have that, can we . . .

As a long-time Deadhead, I'm appalled that Coulter (who still hasn't released her medical records proving she's not a man) claims to be one of us. On the surface, one only has to profess an affinity for the music, but I doubt little Miss Hitler Youth had real clue. Al Franken, whom I 've met, is far more a "real" Deadhead than Coulter could ever be. Now, the Dead themselves were pretty apolitical most of the time, and while there were and are plenty of conservative Deadheads, I can't see any of them--at least the one's I know--claiming kinship with Coulter.

As same era deadhead said, both the "trustafarians" and the tourhead moochers all showed up about the same time in the mid- to late-80s, long after the band's best years. I know that the Dead are considered tragically unhip, but their music from the late 60s and early 70s, which was when I first found them, was raw, energetic, and in many ways revolutionary. Coulter and her ilk were mainly there for the party and the circus-like atmosphere that nearly ruined Dead shows in the later years; their approach was more like "isn't it amusing to see all the quaint hippies". She may have caught sight of the reality--thinking the shows "awesome" (actually only a small percentage of those late-era shows were "awesome" though many were good)--but she clearly didn't get it.

Coulter is a wine-drinking Deadhead wannabe who has no understanding about the Dead...or anything else for that matter.

Uh, fiji is a fraternity. traditionally, only members of a frat do the costume thing. Little surgery there, ann? Interested to see that there is a coulter listed as an esteemed almumni back in the teens. Was he/she a fiji legacy?

As to the dead. the shows were great until rich drunks who should have been at jimmy buffet, and the white dreadlock losers really made shows too irritating and too smelly to enjoy. This combined pack of morons ruined the last show i saw -- except for meeting my future spouse-- by tearing down a wall at the venue. The concert parking lot was filled with the kind of drunken losers the Ms.? coulter seems to have been.

Sign me as Still bitter for losing those 10th row center tickets and that cute 22 yearold i was going camping with, due to the drunken sots that destroied the venue.

we called em "trustafarians..." real easy to tour with your parents money, real easy to "go sailing" and then head to a show. not so easy to work a 9 to 5 job, save up, sacrifice a bit (strange concept in our country) in order to catch a few cherished shows. and every 'scene' is merely a microcosm of the culture in which it operates to some degree; you will inevitably have your small percentage of gate crashing, too much terrible beer drinking, talkers on the cell phone during "stella blue," FREEBIRD shouting assholes and wankers. I mean, that fella ann coulter is sadly confused if she thinks that good rubs off on you just by hanging around good, or that godly rubs off just by calling yourself christian.

and a.j is right: have I seen that guy coulter on stage with the dead? sadly, no.

"Apart from Al Gore, Al Franken is the most un-Deadhead like person I know of who purports to be a Deadhead."

yeah...so, franken actually spent time with the dead. he and his old comedy partner (tom davis?) were actually featured in sketches on "dead ahead" which was a video of some of the dead's 1980 run at radio city music hall. i mean, he may not SEEM like a deadhead to ann, but anyone who is in a movie with garcia seems to count. (yeah, go ahead and make fun of me. i'm a big dead fan.)

“There was so much viciousness - killed cats, punctured tires, threats, investigations and slander against those of us favoring impeachment.

I wasn't aware that Bill Frist (and his toned, hairy biceps) was working for Clinton's team.

And, pray tell, how does one "slander" Ann Coulter?

As someone for whom both the Clash and the Dead are/were immensely important, I have to say that:

"(egalitarian, DIY, righteous anger, anti-authoritarian)"

describes plenty about both bands.

The people in the crowd have their own reasons for being there.

After having the music and culture that represent the cornerstone of my belief system (egalitarian, DIY, righteous anger, anti-authoritarian) become appropriated by the NRO crowd because one line of one song is "drop your bombs between the minarets, down the casbah way" -- all I can say to my peace-loving Deadhead bretherns is HA-HA!

So this does seem to lend credence to the theory that Ann Coulter doesn't really believe the shit she spews, she just does it for money and ratings. Which, somehow, makes her even more reprehensible.

Yeah, I remember plenty of obnoxious broads like Adam's-Apple Annie when I used to go to Dead shows. The type who would show up drunk off their damned fool asses with no real clue as to why they were there, other than because that was where the party was or because that was where they'd followed some guy they wanted to fuck. In other words, exactly the kind of people you DON'T want to be tripping next to. The kind who automatically make you edge sideways
until their flapping-ass yaps are out of earshot.

I definitely had a short fuse when it came to scammy little stenchballs sidling up to me and begging me to "kick down a splash, brah?" of my beer ("Did you actually just beg me for my BACKWASH, you shit-smeared dumbfuck??") but I'd have taken their nonsense at a Dead show any day over having to deal with drunken, braying, gucci-fuck yuppies like Coulter. When I hear that soul-rotted twat blathering on about the "family vibe" at Dead shows, trying to somehow justify her own hatemongering, or to give herself some sort of "street cred" amongst decent human beings, all I can think is that there just isn't a circle of Hell that is torturously miserable by HALF for the likes of her.

There were plenty of lame-asses on Dead tour, I realize, but CRIKEY!!

Alan Keyes was encouraged to mosh during an episode of The Awful Truth. You can see it on DVD. It's all kind of freaky, but not more so than his politics, including his theory that gay people shouldn't be allowed to adopt because their children, not knowing who their biological parents are, will be naturally drawn to each other and commit incest. (Doesn't it seem like this should rule out adoptions by straight parents, as well?)

Y'know, I've spent a good part of my life off and on in Marin County, particularly Fairfax and West Marin. As a result of that and my tendency to hang with the filthy commie hippies I have had regular, if occasional contact with the members of the Dead, Airplane and Journey at local watering holes, various parties and of course, at the beach. I have had long conversations with most of the Band members and I can tell you without fear of contradiction that the very thought of Ann Coulter being a fan would be nothing less than appalling to them...

In 1983, I moved my seventeen-year-old punk ass out of my mother's house and into a shared place in North Oakland that was a big stopoff point for Deadheads. Most of my then-roommates were Deadheads; as they moved away, I managed to replace 'em with my punk friends. Deadheads still stopped by, expecting us to put them up, feed them, and provide bathroom facilities for them, and to passively tolerate their endless insulting diatribes about our musical taste.

In short, much of my experience with Deadheads was of judgmental mooches who felt that I owed them something and who were perfectly comfortable offending thier hosts with their inablilty to accept differences. Thus, I am unsurprised that Ann Coulter is a Deadhead.

You reckon if she’d a smoked pot instead drinking that elitist Chardonnay back in college she might not be such a hateful ol’ harridan today?

Oh, I suspect that she voted in the wrong precinct to make sure her regular dealers didn't knock on her door for back money.
