Contribute to the Erick Erickson Full-Length Mirror Fund
Torkel Torkelson the Red wields his atgeir against Alan Grayson but only manages to impale himself on it:
Alan Grayson is the corpulent congressman from Florida.
Yes, that’s right. Erick just called someone else corpulent. The only reason for this apparent total lack of self-awareness is either that Erick has no full-length mirror at home or he thinks that corpulent is an erudite term for Jewish.
This post would be worthy of note if only for Erickson calling someone else fat, but it deserves a place in the Red State hall of fame for yet another reason:
Today comes word of an even more damning story. A gay couple down in Florida was facing foreclosure. ACORN and Alan Grayson rallied to their cause.
Cheyenne Bowers and his partner David Paxton thought they had gained a valuable ally.
They were in a fight to save their home. He thought a pledge from an eager incoming freshman congressman to help them out through numerous programs might do the trick.
“Expansion of existing federal programs like the FHA loans and the VA loans be more readily available at better terms than we’ve seen up to this point,” said Grayson in December 2008.
The non-profit ACORN along with Grayson invited the media into Bowers and Paxton’s home to talk about fighting the foreclosure crisis, particularly fighting Bowers and Paxton’s foreclosure nightmare.
When the cameras went away, so did Alan Grayson. The foreclosure went through. The couple, in seriously bad health, were put out on the street.
Leaving aside the absurdity of Erickson’s new-found sympathy for a gay couple, which is somewhat akin to Michael Vicks joining the ASPCA and getting all weepy about sled dogs in the Iditarod, the most ridiculous thing here is that the rest of the article that Erick cites completely contradicts his characterization of the incident.
Grayson says he referred Bowers and Paxton to housing counselors, found him an attorney and attempted to get him disability benefits.
But despite all the programs and promises from politicians, it all came down to Household Financial who simply would not budge. …
But at the end of the day Bowers and his partner Paxton were high risk. They had no income. They were disabled, both facing life-threatening illnesses. Bowers needed a liver transplant … .
In the end, no one could force the lender to stop the foreclosure process.
“I’m not some sort of super hero, I don’t have magical powers. I can’t keep people in their homes if they’re not paying their mortgages indefinitely,” Grayson said. …
The couple’s home went up for auction last Thursday, but they had no buyers so that bought them some more time. They are currently still in their home.
So let’s see. Grayson didn’t exactly leave with the cameras. The couple is still in their home. Erickson is too lazy to finish reading a 500-word article or, even more likely, he’s just a disingenuous hack who hoped that no one else would click through his link. But above all Erickson needs, among other things, a full-length mirror installed in his double-wide in Macon. Maybe we should set up a PayPal fund to get him one.

I would be very, very interested in learning whether or not Household Financial actually holds the paper for that mortgage. Because if they don’t, they cannot foreclose, thanks to several recent court rulings.

Exactly, which I’d willing to bet is why Erik the Fat didn’t get the entire article finished before he wrote; he just couldn’t blow the chance. Like so many other opportunities in wingnut land — they come and then they go so fast when the light of truth and/or comprehension hits them.

Erickson: Update, a reader has brought to my attention that technically the homeless gay couple in question isn’t actually homeless. But that just proves my point, that I actually had the thought that Grayson and his homo bum loving heart would leave when the cameras did.

Dudes not much of a blogger if he can’t even be arsed to RTFA.
His own link points out the villain pretty plainly – big business.
Ironically, the company that’s got them dangling on the cliff of living in a home that’s up for sale probably could care less if that particular household is same-sex or not … so even if EE’s pro-same-sex opportunistic horseshit wasn’t being advanced opportunistically (& ignorantly) it would still fall flat.
Big business favors the use of a buzzword like “equality” as a PR banner under which they can (among other things) chum down a range of wages with a stockholder-unfriendly high-end to a single cheaper & more easily managed lowest-common-denominator.

Slightly OT but it seems Grayson either really doesn’t care about politics or he understands the muddled middle of America really deeply.
Note that Grayson’s district has elected GOoPers in the past (previously, e.g., by Ric “Cheeseburger” Keller, which brings this all full circle back to corpulance). And Grayson is not saying “oh noes, I must be centrist to keep my seat”. Assuming Hagar the Horrible is right, AG’s saying “I’ll make a splash by, um, standing out and making a splash — perhaps that will keep me noticed and popular?”
So Mary, Joe … there may not be a Santa Claus, but moving to the center is not the way to court so-called centrist voters — so-called centrist voters are not really centrist, they just don’t care about ideology and want to elect candidates who “get ‘er done”. The GOP monopolized that brand (which is why centrists would so often fall for GOoPers … not because centrists were all that conservative — if you actually poll them for their positions on issues, they are pretty liberal) until their batshit crazy started showing and it was obvious that they were as incampatent as my spelling (or more so).
Now what Dems need to do to maintain our majority is not to “move to the center” because that’s where the American people are but to “get ‘er done” — people need health care, etc. — nu? pass a bill that will make health care more accessible. Harry Reid has finally figured this out. Grayson rode into office realizing this.
But even amongst the liberal base, some liberals still think that appealing to the (anti-ideological) center means moving toward the center ideologically when what it should mean is making sure government works (at all levels — smoothly and efficiently) so people can trust government to work at things like running a public option or even being a single payer for health care. This point isn’t Tom Friedman. It’s practically Michael Moore. But he’s fat, so I guess we can ignore him. Also.

Yes. It’s a matter of Comparative Religion 101: whilst Christianity has an otherworldly orientation and is concerned about the soul, Jewish morality is focused on the detailed minutiae of living in this world and is concerned about the body.
Hence “corpulent”.

First up, it’s always a lie to mean, super-far-right playing a parody of a concerned soft-leftie notable by how their “moderate” stance is based on bizarre super-far-right ideas of governance or social politics.
Second, even when earnest, it just states that the see centrism and being between two poles as more critical to their identity than an honest consistent ideology. Thus as democrats continue to be centrist to center-right and republicans go bat-shit, they invariably move to the right and start scouring the left for something, anything to let them play an equivalence game so that they can avoid being an actual democrat and thus not wonderfully “impartially” centrist.
Third, seriously, is there really anything more annoying than someone who will willingly and proudly declare themselves a centrist? It’s like a giant tag for assholism. It ranks right up there with someone who thinks that bipartisanship is a good unto itself. See cable pundits.

And they agree with her, especially the lesbians. They all just understand that health care to poor groups often in artistic ventures as many lesbians work or in non-profits like many feminist activists work is just too much too fast for centrism. Also her lesbian friends agree that they shouldn’t get married because that isn’t centrist and proper and besides, Obama was mean once to gays so they’re all voting for republicans.
In point of fact even tho most of my Lesbian friends ARE artists of some kind or another they’ve also mostly had to actually grow up very fast. Something most far leftists NEVER seem to do. They recognize what issues are important and take moderate stances on those and don’t want to go psycho suicide slut at the drop of the hat the way far left social liberals do.

The place with the REALLY socialized medicine, of a quality so mind-blowingly stupendous that every single American who has gone has whimpered to leave and lose it. I’m in Denmark right now, the huge difference of government-provided free healthcare for anyone in the student class blows one’s mind and is a welcome and beautiful treat.
It is fundamentally impossible for someone to live there and rant about the incredibly moderate reforms in the Senate. I know it’s obvious she’s lying out her ass, but I just wanted to highlight the most egregious example.

That sounds like a pretty fair description of Grayson. Just because someone may be heavy themselves doesn’t mean they’re not allowed to accurately describe someone else as also being heavy. Grow up and move out of your mom’s basement.

- Pryor was one of 12 Senate Democrats who voted to adopt S.3930, the Military Commissions Act of 2006[5], which restricts from an entire class of people the writ of Habeas Corpus [6], admits as legal evidence information obtained by coercion or torture [7], and provides for an effective amnesty to government officials who might otherwise face criminal charges for having authorized torture or abuse of prisoners prior to the bill’s passage
- Pryor is affiliated with a political organization called the Family and has stated that through the Family he had learned that the separation of church and state was a sort of secular exaggeration and that “Jesus did not come to bring peace. Jesus came to take over.”
Nice mainstream Dem, there.

2) Recruit all straight youngsters to our debauched lifestyle
3) Destroy all healthy heterosexual marriages
4) Replace all school counselors in grades K-12 with agents of Colombian and Jamaican drug cartels
5) Establish planetary chain of “homo breeding gulags” where over -medicated imprisoned straight women are turned into artificially impregnated baby factories to produce prepubescent love slaves for our devotedly pederastic gay leadership
6) Bulldoze all houses of worship
7) Secure total control of the INTERNET and all mass media for the exclusive use of child pornographers.

OK, busted again. I’ll be glad to grab any number of quotes from the presidential campaign in which Obama expressed his support for health care reform, including a public option:
“”The time has come for universal health care in America [...] I am absolutely determined that by the end of the first term of the next president, we should have universal health care in this country.”
But you voted for him anyway. Were you not paying attention then, or do you typically vote for candidates who promise to implement policies with which you disagree?

The Democrat Party is in deep trouble in both Virginia and New Jersey. Big government liberals in Washington have alienated swing voters with big spending, higher taxes, a nationalized auto and banking industry, and suffocating regulations.
Troll is right in one sense — pace what some of you have had to say, the Democrats are in big trouble in NJ (that Christie is loosing and blew a 15 point lead doesn’t mean the Dems are safe in NJ — it just means that the GOP is in deeper trouble than are the Dems).
OTOH, I dunno about the political dynamics in VA, but having lived in NJ (and currently working here), I can say that Trollie is 100% wrong about why the Dems are in trouble in NJ. The majority of NJ voters live in the I-95 corridor which is one of the most deeply left-wing parts of the country, and either don’t give a rat’s ass about “teh evil socialist big gummint in DC” or they actively support it.
The reason why NJ Dems are in trouble is because NJ Dems are doing a heckuva job (as in “you did a heckuva job, Brownie”) in running NJ itself (and even some of the folks NJ sends to Congress are involved with NJ political machines and hence part of the problem).
I know the so-called liberal media will spin any GOP victories in NJ (e.g. in 2010) as “even the liberal I-95 corridor rejects the leftism of Obama, Reid, Pelosi and CO”, but just because even the liberal media says it (and they are oh-so-pro-liberal and giving our spin … not!) doesn’t make it true.
If the GOP does (Hashem forbid) get its act together and start winning elections, even Congress-critter/Senate elections, in NJ — that doesn’t mean NJ voters are fed up with big gummint socialism (well, certainly the voters out in the Red NJ boonies are and long have been) but rather that they are fed up with corrupt machine politics and the NJ Democratic party.
The (NJ) Dems are alienating “swing voters” alright. But not because of their ideology and voting records in Washington but because of their behavior in NJ itself.

So McC MAYBE gets in, promptly fucks things up, and gets tossed out again. Either way, unless you live in Virginny, it’s not much concern, and if the Republican Party is seeing it as a silver bullet for their woes, more power to ‘em. Part of the fun of watching them circling the toilet.

While we are all trying to figure out how to get people what they need, standing up for personal injustices that we have felt or has been felt by close friends, they are chasing desperately a need to win something, anything to plug themselves back in the game and the quick rushes they provide.
Essentially, we have one party that is a coalition of people who want to do various things to help real people and another party of drug addicts and sports fans.
Intirguing.

DAS, substitute “liberal” with “conservative” in your analysis, and “USA” for “NJ” and THAT is what really happened in 2008. America is a center-right country, we didn’t vote for Socialism, we just voted against Bush (who didn’t govern as a conservative). – Change Troll
So Bush lost because he didn’t govern as a conservative? I guess conservatism never fails it only is failed, eh?
As to your larger point, it begs the question of whether America is a center-right country, but let’s assume it is (and let us note Cerebus @ October 28, 2009 at 15:30 above who works out the implications of what it means to be “center-x”). Does this mean that Americans are ideologically most supportive of candidates just right of center on the political spectrum and that the most successful candidates (barring backlash voting) are those who are closest to this ideological sweet spot?
Hells no! Most Americans have a distrust of ideology (and even of examining ideological assumptions). Most Americans are center-x because, not wanting to think about ideology too hard, they fall into the trap (c.f. again Cerebus’ remarks) of “both sides are partially right and both sides are partially wrong, therefore the truth is somewhere in the middle”. Since they don’t care about ideology, they want people in office simply who get things done and first do no harm.
The GOP was in part so successful for almost 30 years because they were the party of “we aren’t ideological Euro-weenies but we just wanna kill Commies/Terrorists/whomever — and that’s doin’ something” — i.e. the GOP spoke the language of “get ‘er done”. They also were constantly critiquing government mis-actions, so people trusted them to not make those mistakes (if you don’t do anything, you don’t do wrong things).
But eventually it has become obvious that the GOP does a lot of harm, is ideological and nucking futs besides. So were 2006 and 2008 anti-GOP backlash? As S. Palin would say, “you betcha”. But does that mean that if the Dems govern as socialists this will alienate “center-right” America? No — even if you assume America is “center-right”, what would alienate the “center-right” is not socialism but SNAFUs.
And perhaps I am ideologically biased here, but it seems to me that if the Dems actually go out and get health care reform done right (i.e. introduce some of teh evil socialism into the mix), etc., they’ll have more luck with so-called center right America than if the Dems continually try to “compromise” and the compromises that result make matters worse for most Americans.
The American people want to see results, not sausage making. And since teh evil socialist Dems are the ones whose policy ideas will produce results, no matter how supposedly “center-right” the American people are, they will stick with us moonbats. OTOH, since all the “moderate Dems” wanna produce is more horse-trading (with said traded horses being ground into sausage), if the moderate Dems have their way, then the American people will reject the Dems in favor of the GOP (assuming the GOP can manage not to be nucking futs for the length of an election season, which seems to be a challenge — c.f. Christie blowing a 15 point or whatever lead!).

Of course, that can be a problem for us. If you have one side in it to win (in part because they don’t believe that government can actually do anything constructive, so winning is the main goal for them) while the other side actually is interested in governing (because they believe some good might come of it), the side that’s playing to win will, everything else being equal, win more often than not.
Fortunately, perhaps in 2006 the American people woke up to what is going on?

The general disconnect happens when you assume that state/local politics directly reflect national politics, as if the country were a giant Risk board where each state could be Red or Blue and nothing in between. Even if, say, Christie is elected in NJ, there’s nothing short of a major hurricane that would make the state vote for a Republican senator in 2014 or a Republican presidential candidate in 2012, because New Jersey Republicans are still basically Blue Dogs compared to the national caucus.

The usual suspects will fall into the usual categories. As the night drags on, Ohio, Colorado, and (much to your horror) Pennsylvania will be too close to call.
My advice at this point to you will be to go to bed. You will wake up to a McCain presidency and the Great Liberal Freakout will be on.

The Republicans will basically take the governorship and keep the other 2 top slots (Lt Gov and AG), retake the Senate and maybe add a seat or two in the house. A good year for the Republicans, but not exactly a disaster of earth-shaking proportions for the Democrats given that this is a pretty red state overall.
Of course I’m old enough to have been active in campaigns in 1982 when the Democrats did pretty well in the mid-terms and I kept hearing that Reagan was in trouble in 1984. And after 1994 I kept hearing from republican coworkers how Clinton was doomed in 1996.

And then once sworn in MAY even enact some laws that MAY get voted on.

That laughter still continues in some quarters to this day … a perfectly rational activity when one is confronted by a clown.

Yep. Case in point for both of these: California. We’ve got a Republican Governator (who sometimes acts like a R, sometimes like a D, but usually just like an Ahole). He got elected because his predecessor was seen as being ineffective in dealing with budget issues and the electricity mess back then. He got re-elected by … basically, pretending to have Democratic opinions during the election. But he’s about it as far as Republicans in statewide office go. Large Dem majorities in the Assembly and State Senate (although the minority Republicans in the Senate are able to use the state constitution’s requirement of 2/3 majority to pass a budget as an effective veto). Two Dem U.S. Senators. Gobs of Dem house members. Obama won the state so handily that the campaign was shipping us volunteers to other states for GOTV efforts, since CA was a lock.
The R primary for the Governator’s replacement seems to be pitting Fail vs. Epic Fail, so I look forward to this anomaly being corrected about a year from now.

Maybe people liked the movie, but couldn’t resist rating it Ø.

Tw00fie as a Riot Grrrl was, perhaps, the most amusing EPIC FAIL! of all time.

And yet, there really are people like that, who spend a few years slumming in the underground so they can name-drop, but never listen to the lyrics because only nerds care about that stuff.
CRG is almost believable, but knowing that Troofy has enough knowledge of rock trivia to have played The Fool for several months (notice how The Fool never came back after Troofy slipped and used the wrong nym on one of these threads), it’s got to be him.

In the meantime, here’s more Daily Dash
I do not trust that roguish expression.

What I love are the rightards getting all excited about a local race in Virginia. “Oh, yeah, hippies, the GOP is BACK! Look how well we’re doing in Virginia!!!eleven!
And normal people scratch their heads and say “Yeah, Virginia. Stronghold of the Solid South for a generation.” Sure, Obama the Magic Unity Pony ™ won there, but it’s still the South, for Chrissake.”
I mean, rly? Virginia? You’re getting all excited about a local Virginia race? What’s next, Orrin Hatch getting reelected in Utah?

Also I know how to hack your site, I took classes on computer programming and internet science recently. Just wait.

You could have kept Republican Joe “Droopy” Lieberman home, thanks very much.

You can take classes in “internet science” to learn how to hack other people’s websites? How come my local community college doesn’t offer this? It’s not fair!

These classes inspired an upcoming movie, titled The Men Who Stare at Goatse.

I tremble before your exaggerated hacker skillz, and clutch the case of my Dell at night, whimpering in fear.
Give me a fucking break, Troofus. If you weren’t already hacking your high-school database to change your grades at age 16 you aren’t going to learn how from the fucking Video Professor. I have an MCSE and 14 years of IT experience — I know how to secure a website, or a computer, but I never had the hooligan urge to learn how to crack one.
And if you succeed, I hope you get fucking arrested and jailed. You do realize that it’s not 1987 anymore, and the law takes hacking seriously, don’t you?

Spoken like someone who could use a good reach-around.
