It’s become so unobserved that most people still have to go to work, and IIRC it’s been years since the day was construed by yokels as an excuse to display anti-Japanese behavior, much to everyone’s chagrin and embarassment.
Some years ago, one of our governors had the bright idea of superimposing a simultaneous trip-out-on-able local holiday with the inspiring and mellifluous name of Governor’s Bay Day. State parks are free that day. So, in lieu of marathons (too much effort), we sit cheek-to-jowl on the beach and get sand in our Del’s and hot wieners.
Hot wieners are not to be confused with tube steaks of any stripe. Those who grasp the rich meaning and tradition behind “Original New York System” will understand.

Also, the Giants have a really good defensive infield, Durham and the loss of J.T. aside. Did you see that double play Durham-Vizquel-Feliz last night? When we first got Vizquel last year, Cleveland fans told me that we were going to love him. They were right.
