Device tells you if you’re boring
MIT Media Lab researchers are building a device to help autistic people determine if they’re boring or annoying the person they’re talking to. The “emotional social intelligence prosthetic device” is a camera that clips on eyeglasses and feeds images to a small computer that uses image recognition software to characterize emotions. If the listener doesn’t seem to be engaged, the device vibrates to alert the wearer.

AN ARMY OF DAVIDS: The Mark Steyn review. “It’s one of the most enjoyable reads I’ve had in a long time.”

Cool. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Aaaah, but does it measure wanking? If so, Glenn Reynolds would break it if he came within 50 yards of it.

50, huh? I wouldn’t have expected Insty could make that kind of distance.

In all seriousness, if that emotionometer device works anything like as well in real life as it did in the trial, it will be a massive, massive boon for higher functioning autistic people. Trying to interpret other people’s mental states and nonverbal cues is extremely hard and extremely distressing for many of them.

I don’t think you should make fun of the autistic. Polio sufferers, Thalidomide babies, the Lebanese, sure. But we’ve got to draw a line somewhere.

I thought the Ole Perfesser really liked Big Government, at least when it’s dressed in an elephant’s skin. Same thing with Big Media, as long as Murdoch or Moon own it.

Well, I’ll be damned. Maybe he’s working undercover, trying to bring down The Powers That Be by sucking them off so hard they crumple in exhaustion. I bet that’s it.

Of course, having a goofy-looking camera attached to a pair of glasses (“Howdy, five-eyes!”) presents its own shunning/mocking opportunities against the hapless autistic. Fix one problem, introduce two new ones. *sigh*

    Well, in my opinion….

Whoa! My “emotional social intelligence prosthetic device” just started vibrating.

That means that instead, it’s about time that I started relating to you my experiences reading conservative blogs.

Wowza! My ESIPD just vibrated so hard it fell off my glasses. I’d best pick pick up and reboot the danged device.

In short, my experience on the Internets reveals….

Aaagh! My eyes! The goggles do nothing!

Watch it, teh l4m3, or Andrew Sullivan is going to hold up your post as an example of the “extreme hatred and intolerance on the left against the differently-othered”.
