You’re unfairly maligning Mirengoff to some extent. Realism is the name of a specific academic theory of international relations that goes a bit beyond “the tendency to view or represent things as they really are.” Mirengoff is not saying that the basis of a sound foreign policy is to ignore reality. Rather, he’s making a reasonably legitimate objection to using realism to to guide US policy towards Iran.
I happen to think Mirengoff’s approach is wrong, but its certainly not off-the-wall batshit insane not-even-wrong.

Pfft. I’m fairly well acquainted with the jargon of a few different fields, but “realism” is an incredibly crappy choice of term for that concept.
Regardless, I stand by the über-strawman thing, where Mirengoff is simply ascribing absurd beliefs to Obama, then attacking them. I mean, he’s clearly explained his reasons for his cautious statements on Iran, and they have zilch to do with perceiving its government as a rational actor. Arguably the opposite.
