douche-bag (n.) – see Whelan, Ed

ABOVE: M. Edward Whelan III

Cornerite and legal blowhard Ed Whelan outs Obsidian Wings blogger publius. Here’s the rejoinder, enjoyable but unfortunate in its necessity.

h/t: Righteous Bubba

Tintin adds: Picture (above) and a link to Tbogg who points out the irony of Whelan claiming that he outed publius because publius couldn’t write quality posts, a skill that Whelan himself has yet to perfect. And Steve Benen has this to say about Whelan’s ass-holery.

    M. Edward Whelan III is the President of the Ethics and Public Policy Center. He directs EPPC’s program on The Constitution, the Courts, and the Culture. His areas of expertise include constitutional law and the judicial confirmation process. As a contributor to National Review Online’s Bench Memos blog on judicial nominations and constitutional law, he was a leading commentator on the nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.

Mr. Whelan, a lawyer and a former law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, has served in positions of responsibility in all three branches of the federal government. From just before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, until joining EPPC in 2004, Mr. Whelan was the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel in the U.S. Department of Justice. In that capacity, he advised the White House Counsel’s Office, the Attorney General and other senior DOJ officials, and Departments and agencies throughout the executive branch on difficult and sensitive legal questions.

So Spiny Norman is correct — he is Frank Burns!

    *

Actually his behavior reminds me a bit of a coworker who will start to do something completely uncollegial. Then when you call him on it (indirectly) and say “if anybody were to do [uncollegial thing Y which coworker X is about to do], that would be horribly uncollegial” (note that this quote nowhere says that X was going to do Y), he’ll say “I never said I was going to do [Y], how dare you be so unethical to accuse me of such”.

Suffice it to say that X has already been sued by former female employees for creating a hostile workplace. Our employer is using the same sort of defense Madeline Kahn (playing Pat Nixon) gave of Dick “he’s not anti-semitic, he hates all minorities” Nixon: X is not sexist, he’s mean toward everyone!

That a writer at a site like NRO would stoop to outing an anonymous liberal blogger is, hopefully, far more a discredit to Whelan and NRO, than it is trouble for said blogger. Were it up to me, Whelan would be gone as an NRO blogger. I think it somewhat revealing when so called professionals start looking like the children out here, as opposed to the more traditional amateur bloggers. It’s likely one reason why many started blogging and reading blogs back before so many alleged professionals decided they had to catch the wave.
